UFC 74 UPDATE: SOBRAL VS. HEATH, HUERTA VS. CRANE

UFC 74 Update: More Bouts Confirmed
By FCF Staff

The Ultimate Fighting Championship confirmed two more bouts today for the promotion’s upcoming, UFC 74, August 25th card, which will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a light-heavyweight clash, former title contender Renato “Babalu” Sobral (27-8) will take on David Heath (9-1). Sobral will be hoping to end a two fight losing streak, after losing by TKO to former champion Chuck Liddell for a second time at UFC 62 last August, and then to Jason Lambert at UFC 68 in March. Prior to that, the Brazilian fighter won 10 bouts in a row, an impressive streak that included wins over such notable fighters as Mauricio Rua, Jeremy Horn and Trevor Prangley.

Heath is coming off his first professional career loss, as at UFC 70 in April, he was defeated by Lyoto Machida who won by Unanimous Decision. Heath has gone 2-1 so far competing in the UFC, with wins over Corey Walmsley at UFC 62, and Victor Valimaki at UFC Fight Night 8 last December.

Rising star Roger Huerta (18-1-1) will be back in the Octagon already, after stopping Douglas Evans at “”The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 Finale on June 23rd. Huerta has won all four of his UFC fights now, defeating Jason Dent, John Halverson, Leonard Garcia, and the aforementioned Evans.

His opponent will be UFC newcomer, Alberto Crane (8-0), who will be fighting for the first time in over two years. Crane is probably best remembered for his successes competing in King of the Cage, where he put together wins over Javier Vasquez and John Mahlow.

MANNY GAMBURYAN WANTS REMATCH
by Mitch Gobetz

Manny Gamburyan was in the biggest fight of his career against Nate Diaz back at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale. It appeared Manny was winning the fight and Diaz hadn't offered much of an offense. At the start of the second round, Gamburyan shot in for a take down. After the shot, he immediately tapped out. Gamburyan's shoulder had popped out and was dislocated. All of his dreams had been lost because of the injury, and the victory belonged to Nate Diaz.

Gamburyan spoke with MMAWeekly about his injury and his feelings about the fight. The first thing most fans were wondering about was his recovery. “My health is really good. My shoulder is getting better. The first few days were really painful, but now I'm healing.” After going through some tough fights in the house, and being a huge underdog, Manny was extremely dejected. “It was very disappointing,” Manny explained. “That's for sure. I worked very hard.”

After such a lackluster ending to a very hyped fight, a rematch seems imminent. There have been some rumors of Diaz not wanting a rematch though. Gamburyan was infuriated at the thought of not getting one. “I heard he said that he didn't want a rematch. You better give me a rematch, bro. It wasn't your fault. It wasn't my fault. I want a rematch as soon as possible.” Manny didn't believe that Diaz did anything to hurt him at all during the fight. “He didn't even damage me bro. He didn't do anything. He will be the last guy I would be scared of. I fought Sean Sherk when I was 18 years old. Why would I be scared to fight Nate Diaz?”

Gamburyan's shoulder injury was not a new one. He has had these problems quite a few times in the past. In fact, he even had it happen during the taping of The Ultimate Fighter. “This is not a new injury. I hurt my shoulder when I fought Joe Lauzon in the third round. It hurt really bad.”

The UFC must know that if a rematch were not to occur, there would always be speculation about who would have won the bout. Especially since Gamburyan clearly won the first round. “I was winning, of course. Everyone knew I was winning. Everybody wants to see this fight again. It wasn't supposed to end this way.”

Manny knows that he might not get an immediate rematch, and he is willing to go up against anybody that the UFC has in front of him. “If I have to fight a couple guys until I fight Diaz, I'll do it.” The severity of Manny's injury does not seem to be too long. According to Gamburyan, he's ready to fight right now. “As soon as possible. I swear to God. I might be hurting, but I want to fight right now.”

In speaking with MMAWeekly, it seemed like the only thing on Gamburyan's mind was redemption. He had a fire in his voice that would pump up any fan. “I will rematch him any day, any time, any place. I promise you guys that I will win. I know I'm gonna be back. Not only will I be back. I'm gonna finish business. I will heal.”

Nathan's Opponent

Nathan Diaz has signed to fight Junior Assuncao at UFC's fight night in Las Vegas. Assuncao is a 2 time UFC veteran, with his last fight being a win at UFC 70 in April. Diaz is coming off a 4 fight win streak and hopes to make a statement that he will be one of the UFC's top contenders in the 155lbs weight class.

Knocking out "The Iceman" less than two minutes into the first round of their fight at UFC 71 in May to capture the light heavyweight crown, Jackson stopped a streak of four consecutive title defenses by Liddell. The 29-year-old has been a rising star in mixed martial arts since his 2001 debut with the PRIDE Fighting organization (recently acquired by UFC ownership) he defeated many of the world's best fighters, including a previous victory over Liddell in 2003. Jackson will put his new UFC title on the line
against Henderson, the pound-for-pound superstar who holds two titles in PRIDE.

Henderson currently holds PRIDE's 205 pound and 185 pound title. He is the only the only fighter in MMA history to hold two titles in two weight classes concurrently in a major fight organization. He enters his fight with Jackson after a stunning knockout victory over Wanderlei Silva last February, which was compelling since Silva had beaten Jackson twice before. Having represented the United States in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling, Henderson will look to impose his wrestling ability during his bout with Jackson in an attempt to make history again, this time by becoming the first fighter ever to hold both the UFC and PRIDE titles.

Mirko "Cro Cop" returns to the Octagon™ following his first UFC loss to Brazil's Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 70 in Manchester, England. The fearsome kickboxer turned mixed martial artist was the 2006 PRIDE Open Weight Grand Prix Champion and was expected by many to defeat Gonzaga en route to a mega- fight with Randy Couture for the heavyweight title at UFC 74 in August. Instead, Gonzaga turned the tables on "Cro Cop" and caught him with a right leg kick to the head, sending him to the canvas in a stunning upset nine seconds before the end of the first round. "Cro Cop" now goes back to England in an attempt to defeat Kongo and start a new reign of terror in the heavyweight division.

Kongo, like Cro Cop, is a kickboxer turned mixed martial artist. Not much was known of the 6'4" 240-pound Parisian when he made his UFC 61 debut in July of 2006 against Gilbert Aldana. He had an impressive record and a stellar reputation as a kickboxer, but many wondered if he could compete in the MMA arena. He answered that question quickly
as he halted the rugged Aldana in the first round. Kongo then jumped back and scored another first round stoppage at UFC 62, this one over Christian Wellisch. At UFC 70, Kongo triumphed with a majority decision over popular Brazilian heavyweight Assuerio Silva, scoring his third win in the UFC.

In other undercard action, light heavyweights Michael Bisping and Matt Hamill will each be putting their undefeated records on the line in a match-up that most expected to see on "The Ultimate Fighter 3" before Hamill was forced to withdraw from the competition due to injury. Fighting out of Widnes, England, Bisping, winner of The Ultimate Fighter 3 in the light heavyweight division, comes into the bout off wins over Eric Schafer and Elvis Sinosic at UFC 66 and UFC 70 respectively.

"The Hammer" trains with Tito Ortiz and Team Punishment in Southern California, and most recently defeated Rex Holman at UFC 68. Hamill is a 2004 inductee in the Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame was the first U.S. wrestler to win gold medals in freestyle and Greco Roman competition in the 1997 World Games for the Deaf. The three-time NCAA National Champion attended the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester.

More details on the event to be announced shortly.

Spike TV Set to Wrestle UFC Deal

Spike TV is on the verge of pinning down a multiyear, multimillion-dollar renewal of its Ultimate Fighting Championship distribution deal, according to sources close to the network.

The new deal, which is expected to cost Spike in excess of $100 million, will allow the men’s-targeted network to keep its popular Ultimate Fighter reality series. The pact will also give Spike more live UFC events than the previous agreement, which expired at the end of last year.

Executives from Spike would not comment, and UFC executives could not be reached for comment at press time.

SWICK VS. GOULET AT UFC FIGHT NIGHT 11?

Following his loss to Yushin Okami at UFC 69 in Houston, Texas, Mike Swick decided to make the move from the middleweight division down to the welterweight division. Rumors have been swirling about a rematch with Chris Leben, but the situation took a bizarre turn when Jonathan Goulet started a thread in the MMAWeekly SoundOff Forum yesterday titled, "Wanna Fight."

In the thread Jonathan stated, "Wanted to fight Mike Swick to replace Leben at 170 for the UFC Fight Night in September, but he refused. Is he scared to go to sleep against me? I will beat his ass..."

When contacted by MMAWeekly, Swick responded, "I'm surprised to hear Goulet make a comment like that about me. It's completely disrespectful to come on here and blantley lie about something I never said. I have always had a lot of respect for his whole team, and it's so sad he is so desperate for a UFC fight that he has to make me look bad to get it. For the record, I never turned down Goulet. You talked to Joe Silva and know who I was asking for... Sometimes you get what you wish for, so..."

Sources close to the situation have informed MMAWeekly that the match is being put together and that both fighters have agreed to the fight.

THIAGO ALVES SET TO MAKE UFC RETURN

Thiago Alves, who is currently 4-2 in his UFC career, is set to return to the Octagon on September 19th at an Ultimate Fight Night event as confirmed by sources close to the fight.

Alves was a rising star in the UFC’s welterweight division until he tested positive for the banned substance Spironolactone following his last fight and win over Tony DeSouza at UFC 66 in December. Spironolactone is a diuretic that is used mainly to lose weight and can mask steroids. The NSAC banned substance causes a person’s kidneys to remove excess sodium and water from their body. The use of Spironolactone is considered a dangerous way for someone to lose excess weight and can cause dehydration.

After facing an eight-month suspension that was handed down from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Alves is sure to return and try to make waves in an already stacked welterweight division and his opponent is set to be Kuniyoshi Hironaka.

Hironaka has racked up a 1-1 record in the UFC with a loss to top ten welterweight Jon Fitch and a win most recently over Forrest Petz in April.

This fight will take place as part of the September 19th show, which is expected to be the lead-in for the newest season of the Ultimate Fighter, featuring coaches Matt Serra and Matt Hughes.

Tear at BTT

Rumors that Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira has left Brazilian Top Team have been confirmed. Nogueira now heads his own team and does his training at other gyms. A split between Murillo Bustamante and Mario Sperry has resulted in Sperry's ouster. Paulo Filho and others that made the core of the team have also left. BTT now is being controlled primarly by Murillo Bustamante and Bebeo Duarte.

Shogun has injured his knee and could be out of his upcoming UFC appearance. We should know more on the severity of the injury in the next few days and whether or not it will have any impact on his fight schedule.

UPDATE: Shogun cleared by doctor to fight, injury determined not serious after medical evaluation

Tuesday talking points: 8,622? 8,622!

UFC 73 attendance, gate, and purse information. Look at the figures - 8,622 paid. They did a little under 8,000 in Ireland. This may sound like piling on here, but I’ve been saying far and wide in media outlets that once UFC gets out of the casino zones, they struggle to cultivate big crowds without the casino power and Vegas-style advantages. It puts that tremendous Columbus crowd into perspective (meaning it reflects well on the Ohio folks). What does it indicate? As boxing promoter Bob Arum put it in a recent Yahoo Sports article, once you leave Las Vegas you have to start using some elbow grease to attract larger crowds.

Kiyoshi Tamura has been booked for HERO’s on July 16th at Yokohama Arena against Kin Tai Ei. K-1 matchmaker Sadaharu Tanigawa stated to the press on Tuesday that he would like to see Tamura vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama. Akiyama is tentatively scheduled to return in September. Tanigawa is also promising a big surprise at the Yokohama Arena event.

The arrest was made by members of the Seminole Indian Reservation police department and Sobral was released on $1,000 bond for the offense.

When reached for comment, members of both the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office and officers from the Seminole Indian Reservation police force confirmed the arrest and the misdemeanor charges stemming from an incident at the casino on Saturday night.

Babalu was last seen fighting in a losing effort to Jason Lambert at UFC 68 and is currently slated to take on David Heath as part of the UFC 74 card in Las Vegas on August 25th.

Further information was not released from the police department with details surrounding Babalu’s arrest but stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com as more develops on the story.

JARDINE CONFIRMS FIGHT WITH CHUCK LIDDELL

With all of the controversy and speculation surrounding the potential main event fight between former champ, Chuck Liddell and former Pride champion, Wanderlei Silva, the UFC finally put the fight to sleep after Silva requested to fight in November instead of the scheduled September 22nd date the organization had set for the main event of UFC 76. Now with Liddell expecting to fight in September the UFC found a new opponent and his name is Keith Jardine

Jardine confirmed the fight to MMAWeekly today saying he expects the deal to be done and the fight to be signed “any day.”

Jardine was considered one of the top contenders for the title in the light heavyweight division prior to his loss to Houston Alexander at UFC 71, the same card that saw Liddell lose his UFC light heavyweight title to new champ, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Jardine is still a top flight opponent for Liddell and with both fighters coming off losses, this is a must win for each.

This fight is slated to be the main event for a card that will also feature the debut of former Pride Grand Prix winner, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Jardine has to see this fight as the biggest opportunity of his career and a win over Liddell would surely erase the fight with Alexander out of many people’s minds.

For Chuck Liddell, this fight may not be as anticipated as the long awaited match with Wanderlei Silva would have been but he will need to be just as prepared for Jardine who loves to throw heavy leg kicks and is a solid stand-up fighter in his own right.

UFC 76 will take place on September 22nd, from Anaheim, California.

TREVOR PRANGLEY: NEWLY CROWNED CHAMP

At this past weekend’s BodogFight event in Trenton, New Jersey, MMA veteran Trevor Prangley fulfilled his longtime ambition to go from perennial title contender to actual title holder, when he dominated fellow vet Yuki Kondo to claim the promotion’s Middleweight Championship.

Some would say it’s been a long time coming for the South African native Prangley, who, despite an impressive 16-3 record, has seemingly flown under the radar of the MMA community more often than not.

After years of nomad-like movement through various organizations, Trevor has settled down with BodogFight and has found a home. In return he’s delivered for the promotion, often providing some of the most exciting action the young company has seen, with the prospects of continuing that trend in the coming year.

Shortly after teaching a class at his branch of the famed Lion’s Den Gym in his transplanted hometown of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, Prangley spoke with MMAWeekly about his win over Yuki Kondo, his new status as Champion, and being called out by the Number 2 Ranked Middleweight in the World.

MMAWeekly: First off, Trevor, tell us how you feel about your in-ring performance this past weekend.

Trevor Prangley: I felt like it was probably one of my best performances, ever. I was in great shape, went out with a gameplan to not give him a chance to get any of his rhythm going, and we managed to pull it off. There were a couple of areas where I maybe could have stayed more active on, but, aside from that I think I had a dominating performance.

MMAWeekly: Prior to the fight I know a lot of people saw the match-up as your physical strength versus Kondo’s finesse game. Is that how you saw it too?

Trevor Prangley: I was expecting that for sure, yeah. I was actually quite surprised that I was able to stand in there and strike with him on the feet as I did. I thought he was going to be a little bit more aggressive than he was. I did hit him pretty hard right off the bat – which is what we planned on doing – to put a little bit of fear into him to make him keep his distance a little bit, and it worked out that way.

MMAWeekly: You’ve made your championship aspirations no secret in interviews with us over the past couple years. How does it feel to have finally gotten that much-wanted opportunity finally and to have achieved that goal?

Trevor Prangley: Getting the opportunity was great. Obviously, I feel I deserved it, being one of their top 185’ers. I’ve come in and always given them exciting fights. So, they gave me the opportunity, and they gave me a legitimate opponent.

Yuki Kondo has been around forever and fought a lot of tough competition, so I was glad about that. I’ve said it before; I don’t want to fight a nobody for a title. I wanted to fight somebody who was well-known and legitimate, and I did. One of my goals in this sport has been reached – I have a title now, and now there’s the next goal – hanging on to it.

With Bodog I really feel like I’ve found a home. I get a long well with everybody there, Miguel [Iturrate] and even the guys higher up in Bodog. I get along well with everybody and fit in there. I’m happy to be there and be the first 185-pound title holder. With the Kondo and myself fight, we’re both pretty highly ranked fighters, and I think we brought a little bit more legitimacy to the organization, as well to myself with the title.

I want to be that guy that everybody’s headhunting for. I want to be the guy that people want to fight to make a name for themselves. It sounds good to me. You know my career – it’s had some ups and downs, but it’s definitely on the upswing [right now], and I intend to keep it that way.

MMAWeekly: Has any kind of plans for the remainder of your year been worked out yet?

Trevor Prangley: I’m going to definitely fight again this year, obviously. I’d like to fight twice if possible. Right now I’m going to take a break, but there’s some stuff in the pipeline. Matt Lindland just called me out a little bit, I think he wants to come back down to 185, so that’d be a good, tough fight. If I beat him, I’m definitely [going to become] ranked one of the top 185’ers in the world, because he’s ranked up there by many as the Number 1 or Number 2 guy.

MMAWeekly: Speaking of Matt’s challenge, were you expecting that at all or were you there saying to yourself, “What is this guy doing here?”

Trevor Prangley: Nah…I kind of figured he would [challenge me]. He’d been talking about it, we’ve been talking about it, I’ve know Matt well, we’re friends and so I’m not upset with him doing it. It’s good for the promotion to build the hype and I think it’d be a great fight.

MMAWeekly: You’ve even fought for Matt’s promotion, Sportfight, in the past.

Trevor Prangley: That’s right. [Laughs] Like I said, we’re really good friends, but it’s a business and sometimes friends have to fight at some point. He’s one of the top guys in the organization and I’m not going to rob Matt of an opportunity to hold the belt just because we’re friends, so we’ll see what happens.

I think they’re going to be pushing for it, and I’m ready to go. Whatever’s better for the promotion and whatever is better for my career is what I want to do. Beating Matt Lindland would be a huge jump in my career. I’m sure there’s still people out there that question me, so if I can put him away it’d be a huge feather in my cap.

He wants a belt, he’s been around a long time and he hasn’t had the opportunity to fight for one in a while. He wants one and he’s burning for it, so I’d never rob him of that opportunity.

MMAWeekly: Even though you have just gotten a title and are at the top of your game, you still have a chip on your shoulder?

Trevor Prangley: I do. I think every fighter’s got that, but I look at the guys in the Top 10 Rankings and I know for a fact I could beat those guys. I just feel like I should be ranked in the Top 10. Not many people want to fight me – for one, and for two – my loss to Jeremy Horn was kind of iffy; and [the last fight against] Chael Sonnen was just a bad performance, but I had beat him twice before. I believe I belong in the Top 10, and I’m not ranked there, and I want to get in there.

MMAWeekly: Getting away from the fight game for a second, what else is on the horizon for you?

Trevor Prangley: I really have been away for six weeks, I was helping Phil [Baroni] train for his fight [against Frank Shamrock], so I just got back home last night. My school’s doing great [The Lion’s Den – Coeur D’Alene] right now, and I think it’s one of the premier MMA schools in the Northwest. I’ve got a great partner in Derek Cleveland who runs everything when I’m away, he does a great job.

He also does the fight promoting too, I just show up and cruise around there. [Laughs] We’ve got an Ultimate Cage Fighting show coming up on July 19th over in Spokane, Washington at the Big Easy, and I hope the fans come and check it out. I really can’t complain where I’m at right now, in my career right now, I just feel blessed and that’s all I can say.

MMAWeekly: Good stuff Trevor, is there anything you want to say as we head out?

Trevor Prangley: I’d like to thank my sponsors: Toe-2-Toe, who’ve been with me over my last couple fights, they’re great, no questions asked, they’re just there; Renegade Fight Gear, he’s a great guy and he came out to my fight, so I wanted to thank him; Pain Inc.; Coeur D’Alene Auto; MMA Jacked, I just picked them up, they’re great too; and West Coast Fight Gear.

I want the fans to always keep their eyes out for me. I’ve become a fighter who finishes his fights. If you look at earlier my career, I was always afraid to take a loss – the UFC puts a lot of pressure on you, if you lose you might be out, back in the day – so I fought conservatively. I don’t fight like that anymore, I fight to finish.

If you look at Yuki Kondo’s career, not many guys have finished him like I did, and when you see that fight on the ION Network in August, you’ll see that. I’m a totally different fighter than I was in the UFC, so people should definitely watch. I’ve been around a long time, but my time is now, I’m 35-years-old and I feel the need to do it right now.

Like I’ve told people before, when I retire my record doesn’t have to be perfect, I want it to be a record that’s fought everybody and when people look at it, they remember the fights and say, “I remember that fight, it was great, those guys really threw down.” I want it to look something like Guy Mezger’s – it’s not perfect, but he’s fought everybody, a who’s who of fighters, and has never backed down from anyone.

Debut for the belt

Ready to his debut at World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), which will happen at August 5, the BTT black belt, Paulo Filho will face the Canadian Joe Doerksen, at middleweight title bout that. “A friend of mine, Sergio Perrone, send me two fights of him. He has a game with some weapons, he likes to submit. He likes to do the same as I do”, said Filho, analyzing his adversary. About the BTT break, Paulão prefer to be out of trouble. “At big dog’s fight, I do not get in”, said Paulão in an exclusive interview that you can see below:

You will face Joe Doerksen for the WEC middleweight belt. Do you his game?

A friend of mine, Sergio Perrone, send me two fights of him. He has a game with some weapons, he likes to submit, that’s what we can see for his record. He likes to do the same as I do.

How is your training routine for this bout?

Actually, now I am slowing down a little bit. I train hard expecting to fight in June, than in July… So I felt that my rhythm was decreasing. So this week I am going to rest a little bit to return next week with full force.

You said that Dana White was afraid to put you at UFC. Why?

People didn’t understand what I told. At UFC, the title holder is Anderson , that is a great friend of mine and I am not interest to face him. The objective is get money, but if Anderson unexpectedly loses his belt, I want to have the opportunity to fight for it.

Do you have any intention of fight at 93kg category?

I am very well at 83kg category, well adapted. Because of my height and my physical structure, I am stronger than opponents.

Dan Henderson vs. Quinton Jackson. Who will win?

I think Henderson . I prefer Henderson . He passed through a hard way, fighting against the bests of the category, and after he retired himself, he will be able to say: “I was a true MMA fighter”. I think this fight will have a lot of ground’n’pound, or goes to the judges. I don’t belive that anyone of then will submit or knock the other out.

And Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell?

Honestly, people can say that is something I have against Wanderlei, but this fights is terrible for him. Chuck is a fighter with tough structure, with 1,88m, and use the counterstrike. Wanderlei has an offensive game, very good to see, but that can permit Chuck the counterstrike. The fist punch of anyone will knock the other down, but is a terrible fight to Wanderlei.

With Mauricio Shogun and Wanderlei entering at UFC, and with Quinton, Henderson, Liddell. Who, in your opinion, is the favorite to take the belt?

Shogun is very young, a striker that is appearing now , but at UFC there are many others strikers that can complicate for him. If I was Shogun manager, I would let him at Pride a little bit more, to get experience and to get mature. He could become the stronger name of the category, but has to get more experience.

How are the things at BTT?

Actually, I know that Minotauro get out of the team. There is a long time that I don’t go there, because I am solving some personal problems, contract, visa… I long time that nobody there calls me and I don’t call nobody. At big dog’s fight, I do not get in.

Josuel Distak, one of your coaches, settle his contract with Black House Team. Do you pretend to go to there?

I do not have objective to go to Black House Team. First of all, because I arranged my contract with the Brazilian Top Team and where Black House academy is located (Recreio), is very far from here. I live at Niterói and Recreio is very far. I am very well installed here, with all structure, comfort and I have the aid of four great friends.

UFC LW DIVISION UNDER "SHARK" ATTACK

'The Muscle Shark' Sean Sherk defended his UFC lightweight title for the first time at UFC 73 with a unanimous decision win over Hermes Franca. The UFC lightweight champion spoke with MMAWeekly Radio about his first title defense, his conditioning and the impending match with 'The Prodigy' BJ Penn.

In the opening seconds of the fight round Hermes threw a knee as Sherk attempted a takedown and applied a guillotine choke on the champ that appeared on camera to be in deep, but according to Sherk, he was never in danger.

"The guillotine was tight, but all you can say about guillotines is it's the easiest move to put on someone, and it's also the easiest move to get out of. I'm pretty good at countering guillotines. I've been doing it for a long, long time, so I had everything in place that I needed to. I had my arm in. I was posting up on my head. He didn't have the right leverage on it, and I've also got a thick neck, and I'm real hard to choke. I was far from being choked out."

Franca landed a devastating knee in the beginning moments of round two that had Sherk momentarily stunned, but was unable to capitalize on it. Asked about Franca's knees, Sherk responded, "It didn't affect me. That first knee came through pretty good, but the rest of them didn't really land that solid. I actually think they did land solid, but I guess I was maybe a little more ready for it, so I was able to shoot right through it."

Despite the few knees and guillotine choke attempts, Franca wasn't able to mount much more of an offense, in fact, he found himself mounted on several occasions. Sherk was able to pass Hermes' guard at will and move from dominant position to more dominant position seemingly without effort. Sherk was even surprised at how easily he was able to handle the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt on the ground.

"I was surprised especially in his Jiu-Jitsu to be off the wall. I train with some phenomenal Jiu-Jitsu guys, and that's what I was expecting, to not be able to pass the guard. When I passed the guard right way in the fight I was a little surprised. I wasn't real sure. I thought maybe he might have been sandbagging a little bit. All and all it was good. I got to show a little versatility there. I got to show people that I'm a Jiu-Jitsu guy and a wrestler."

Following the fight Sherk was criticized by some for not finishing. Kenny Florian made reference to it in his in octagon post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. Stephan Bonnar commented about it on MMAWeekly Radio.

Addressing the critics, Sherk commented, "You can't make everybody happy. Ultimately I thought it was a good, technical battle, and I went out there to prove a point to all the 155 pounders in the world, and I think I did that. I think I proved a point that I'm going to be hard to beat. With work ethic and technique, I'm going to be hard to beat. Hermes is not an easy guy to finish. He's got twenty four fights under his belt, and I think he's been finished once, and he's fought the best of the best at 155. Finishing Hermes is not an easy task by any means."

Sherk continued, "I think I did get a little bit conservative in that fifth round. That last round I knew the fight was locked. The fight was mine to lose. If I do something stupid at this point and time, you know, you win four solid rounds, and now you're going to the fifth round and something bad happens. I didn't want that to happen, so I might have had a few opportunities in that last round if I were to open up a little bit more to finish the fight. All and all I thought it was a good performance."

Sherk's conditioning is second to none as was obvious to anyone who watched the Spike TV "All Access" leading up to the fight. No one in mixed martial arts uses conditioning as a weapon more effectively than Sean Sherk.

"I've always had crazy, crazy cardio conditioning stuff that I've always done. I've always done bleachers, sprints, and distance, swimming on top of the other extra training that I do. I got a new conditioning coach here about eight weeks ago. About two months before the fight we started doing out conditioning stuff. He just got me doing a whole bunch of new stuff, threw some new stuff in the works and it worked out real well."

Conditioning will most likely always be a factor in a Sean Sherk fight, and it definitely was against Hermes Franca. Sherk said, "I felt him fade somewhere between half way in round two I kind of started feeling him fade. Going into that last round I felt great. I mean I felt like I could have still went another four or five rounds. That's the whole point. I don't want to be right in the middle of a fight and think, oh s**t, I've got two more rounds to go. I'm screwed. I want to be able to fight just as hard in the fifth round as I do in the first. That's why I train as hard as I do, for that reason."

He added, "I think anyone is going to have a hard time going five rounds with me to be honest with you. I mean, cardio and conditioning, you can't fake that. Either you have it or you don't, and there's only one way to get great cardio, you've got to work for it. It takes a long time to get great cardio. You've got to make a lot of sacrifices in your personal life, and you've got to make a lot of sacrifices in the gym. If you're not willing to make those sacrifices than there's not faking your cardio. You're going to get tired. I'm willing to make those sacrifices."

After winning the UFC lightweight belt by defeating Kenny Florian at UFC 64, the newly crowned champ was sidelined to repair a nagging shoulder injury that put him out of action for eight months.

Questioned about the shoulder, Sherk answered, "It felt good. I'm only eight months post-op. It feels good. It's a little behind. I wouldn't say it's at 100%. I feel about 95%, but I've been fighting the last seven or eight years with a bad shoulder, so even if it's 95%, I've been fighting on an 80% shoulder for the last seven, eight years. It's better than it's ever been before."

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes once said, "You're not really a champion until you defend your belt," or something along those lines. The pressure to retain the title, especially the first time, can be enormous.

Sherk told MMAWeekly, "It felt good. There was a lot of pressure to defend that belt. I didn't want to be one of those champions that win the belt and lose it right away. I want to be a guy who wins the belt and hangs on to it so people will recognize me for a long period of time as the UFC champion. If you win the belt and lose it right away, people forget about you. I think the first title defense was important, and I got that title defense out of the way, and now I can move on and start thinking about whom my next opponent is."

UFC president Dana White announced at the UFC 73 post-fight press conference that the next opponent will most likely be BJ Penn. "That's what Dana White said. He said that BJ was next in line. I'm fine with that. It doesn't really matter. I'll fight whoever they put in front of me. That's what a champion is supposed to do, so I'll fight whoever they put in front of me. I think BJ is a tough guy, so it should be a great fight."

BODOGFIGHT REVIEW: ALVAREZ & LAROSA WIN

Saturday, July 14- Trenton, NJ: Former welterweight champ Eddie Alvarez was certainly the favorite walking into his fight with Matt Lee. He had the crowd in his pocket. Most didn’t give Lee a chance against his fast hands.

What he actually encountered in the ring with Lee was no walk in the park; Alvarez was taken the distance for the first time in his career. His aggressive style, one he admits can bring him trouble against good counter strikers, came into focus again. Only this time, Alvarez’s heart and cardio carried him through the engagement with flying colors.

Alvarez wasted little time in scoring a takedown in the opening seconds of the bout. Lee mostly clung for dear life, absorbing a couple of hard right hammerfists in the process. Back on their feet, Lee scored frequently with a straight left jab that broke up the waves of punches coming his way. Alvarez ultimately scored the better shots, popping up to fire off one-two combinations that rocked Lee several times. But by the end of the first, Alvarez knew he was in a fight.

Lee simply couldn’t keep Alvarez’s pace in the later rounds. He still scored with stubborn jabs, blooding Alvarez’s nose in the process, but his hands drifted southward frequently.

The two ended the fight baiting each other with outstretched arms, Alvarez eager to settle the unfinished business of avenging the loss of his coach, Stephen Haig. Alvarez rocked Lee several times, but Lee still stood till the final bell.

Though he was happy with the victory, Alvarez wasn’t surprised by Lee’s toughness. “He’s a veteran fighter and he knows how to fight people like me,” Alvarez said at the post fight presser. “I’m aggressive and I like to bring the fight to people and he did the right thing. It was a heart felt battle and my first three round fight which I’m very proud of.”

BodogFight crowned it’s first female champion, 135lb’er Tara LaRosa, who’s tenacity and skill on the ground overcame a trip to the brink of defeat. Opponent Kelly Kobold, brought in on short notice to replace the injured Laura D’Auguste, raked LaRosa over the coals for four non-stop rounds of action.

Kobold never let LaRosa take a breath. Powering through every submission attempt, she slammed several hard lefts into LaRosa’s skull in the second round. LaRosa controlled the submission game, but despite locking in a textbook armbar, couldn’t make Kobold tap before the bell.

When Kobold trotted out to meet LaRosa in the third, LaRosa’s eyes conveyed disbelief that her foe hadn’t given up. After a quick gut check, LaRosa stood and traded with Kobold before taking the fight to the mat. Despite having Kobold’s back several times, LaRosa couldn’t finish a choke before losing the position to a scramble.

LaRosa finally got her wish in the fourth, locking in her beloved armbar too tightly for Kobold to escape, prompting the tapout at 2:50 of the fourth. LaRosa collapsed to the canvas, crying tears of joy.

“This is the coolest shit that’s happened to me in the sport,” LaRosa said afterwards. “Thanks for giving the women a chance. I want to thank Calvin Ayre for giving us the stage to do this on.”

Trevor Prangley put a beating on the smaller Yuki Kondo, who seemed overmatched from the get go. Prangley quickly took Kondo down and pounded open a nasty cut over Kondo’s left eye. Upon a doctor’s check at the end of the second, the doc’s ruled the cut too severe, prompting a TKO victory and new BodogFight Middleweight belt for the native South African.

Shortly afterwards, Matt Lindland jumped into the ring to challenge Prangley for the middleweight belt. Apparently, the thought of fighting twice more at heavyweight didn’t seem so attractive for the top ranked 185’er.

“I feel great, it’s finally all come together,” Prangley said. “I appreciate the opportunity to fight a decent opponent too. I’ve always told the press I didn’t want a paper title. It was a great match-up and it just happened to go my way.”

In other action, Nick Agallar and James Binky Jones fought a technical three round battle for position on the ground that netted Agallar a Unanimous Decision.

The professional eccentric Dan Hawley was outwrestled by fellow newcomer Blair Tugman, who negated his constant armbar and triangle attempts with superior ground and pound. His Unanimous Decision brought the approving screams of the audience, which had quickly grown tired of his crazy man antics.

Brandon Lee Hinkle wrestled his way to a Unanimous Decision Victory over Roman Zentsov, who never got a chance to let his heavy hands go. It wasn’t popular with the crowd, but it got the job done.

Jorge Masdival took one step closer to establishing his name among the current who’s who of lightweights to notice, slapping vet Yves Edwards with a right high kick that flattened him at 2:59 of the second.

Chael Sonnen dominated Amar Suloev on the ground from start to finish, bringing the bout to a halt with punches from a crucifix he locked in the second.

Mark Burch and Yoshiki Takahashi settled their unfinished business too, but Burch had the last word. After wrapping Takahashi up in a clinch, he fired several knees to the undefended face of the Japanese vet, knocking him senseless at 3:45 of the first.

David Love took home a split decision victory with his aggressive countering of Eben Oroz’s Jeet Kun Do tactics.

FIGHT-BY-FIGHT: HEROS MIDDLEWEIGHT GP 2007

HEROS Middleweight GP 2007 Bout: Caol Uno vs. Katsuhiko Nagata

HEROS Middleweight GP 2006 runner-up Caol Uno takes on 2000 Olympic wrestling silver medalist Katsuhiko Nagata. Caol Uno has a 23-9-4 record in MMA and trains out of Wajyutsu Keisyukai Tokyo with Keita “K-Taro” Nakamura. Katsuhiko Nagata has a 3-1 record in MMA and trains out of the American Kickboxing Academy with Jon Fitch. Uno is coming off a fairly easy submission victory over Ali Ibrahim at HEROS 8. Nagata comes off a hard fought decision victory over Isaiah Hill at K-1 Dynamite!! USA.

Nagata has vastly improved his overall MMA skill set in the past couple of months since training at American Kickboxing Academy, but cane he overcome the experience and skill of Uno though? Uno is a former Shooto Welterweight Champion and is known in the United States for his stint in the UFC, so he has been around for a while. Nagata has excellent wrestling skills and has improved his striking but he has never been tested on the ground with a good grappler like Uno, which should be his undoing. Look for Uno to take this fight to the ground and catch Nagata late in the first round with a submission.

Prediction: Caol Uno by submission in the first round.

HEROS Middleweight GP 2007 Bout: Kazuyuki Miyata vs. Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro

HEROS veteran Kazuyuki Miyata faces off with former Shooto Welterweight Champion Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro. Kazuyuki Miyata has a 4-4 record in MMA and is a freelance fighter out of Japan. Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro has a 18-1 record in MMA and trains out of Nova Uniao with Thiago Tavares. Miyata recently submitted Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill with a modified guillotine choke at HEROS 8. Ribeiro also claimed a submission victory at HEROS 8, catching Ryuki Ueyama with an armbar.

Miyata has tons of potential as an MMA fighter but he was never given a real chance to develop as fighter since he was thrown to the wolves right off the bat. Ribeiro is considered to be one of the best lightweights in the world but has never been given a chance to fight in the big show until now. Miyata has shown flashes of brilliance in his fights but has also shown his greenness as fighter in some areas and that’s where Ribeiro will exploit Miyata to win the fight. Miyata will once again be over his head with Ribeiro as he will be outclassed on the ground but where he could have an advantage is on the feet. Either way, I see Ribeiro getting this fight to the ground and submitting Miyata.

Prediction: Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro by submission in the first round.

HEROS Middleweight GP 2007 Bout: Hideo Tokoro vs. Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill

ZST and HEROS star Hideo Tokoro takes on Canadian fighter Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill. Hideo Tokoro has an 18-11-1 record in MMA and trains out of Reversal in Japan. Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill has an 8-6 record in MMA and trains out of the Revolution Fight Team with Kalib Starnes. Tokoro impressively submitted Brad Pickett at K-1 Dynamite!! USA. Gill comes off a submission loss to Kazuyuki Miyata ay HEROS 8.

This is a rematch of a fight that happened last year at HEROS 5, where Tokoro was knocked out by Gill with a knee. Since that fight Tokoro has gone 4-1 in MMA, while Gill has gone 0-3 with all of his losses coming by the way of submission. Tokoro was caught by knee as he shot in for a takedown but I doubt that lightning will strike twice. Gill has been on a real slide as of late and it should continue here. Look for Tokoro to avenge his loss and submit Gill to advance to the next round.
Prediction: Hideo Tokoro by submission in the first round.

The rest of the card is rounded out by a variety of super fights.

In a lightweight bout, Chute Boxe prodigy Andre Dida faces off with Cage Force veteran Artur Oumakhanov, who steps in as a late replacement.

Pride veteran Kiyoshi Tamura makes his HEROS debut against K-1 veteran Taiei Kin.

Former Shooto Lightweight Champion Alexandre Franca Nogueira looks for his first win in HEROS as he takes on ZST veteran Shuichiro Katsumura.

Dutch striker Melvin Manhoef takes on undefeated Japanese personality Bernard Ackah. Manhoef is a late replacement for Korean Judoka Yoon Dong Sik.

Former Japanese wrestler Katsuyori Shibata takes on the debuting Ralek Gracie, who is the newest Gracie to try his hand in MMA.

SHOOTO CROWNS NEW LHW CHAMPION

Change and stagnation marked last night's festivities as both veteran and rookie entered the ring in the fourth installment of Shooto's 'Back To Our Roots' tour, this time held in the legendary Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

The night began with STG Yokohama rookie Junji quickly dispatching Takehisa Toyoshima in the first round. The excitement was followed by Hayato Sakurai student Tomonori Taniguchi stopping opponent Naohiro Mizuo in the first as well, granting himself a three-win streak. The undercard came to a close when Rumina Sato bred Keisuke Yamada won both rounds and then some in his bout with Kyotaro Nakao.

Yuki Shojou and Bantamweight contender Masatoshi Abe kicked off the feature card. After an early rush in the first, Abe found himself grasping Shojou for protection after being taken down off a knee strike by. Abe would escape the position and dish out some of his own before letting the round end with Shoujo back on his feet.

The second began with a whimper as Shoujo accidentally delivered a kick to the groin. After a brief interval for recovery, the battle began again as Abe would catch Shoujo in a guillotine after forcing a tackle. Both on their feet, Shoujo would escape the hold and trip Abe down, initiating some ground and pound. Abe would not be party to the onslaught, however, and attempted a heel hook which awarded him top position, only to fall into a guillotine. Though he escaped the attempt, Abe found himself unable to beat the pressure of a second attempt by Shoujo and succumbed to the tap out.

The now fallen-from-grace Takeya Mizugaki sought to prove he still had what it takes to climb the Shooto Featherweight ladder as he defended his place against rising star Masakazu Ueda. Ueda was largely ineffective in the first, finding himself on the wrong end of several strong blows from Mizugaki. Waiting for openings and opportunities to impress his wrestling ability upon Mizugaki, Ueda was largely ineffective throughout the first half.

Ueda would be come back strong in the second, as his earnestness eventually earned him Mizugaki's back and a rear naked choke attempt. The third finished with Ueda becoming ever more recalcitrant as he surprised a Mizugaki expecting takedowns with punches, scoring takedowns as well, exhausting the time limit. The judges ruled the bout a draw.

An over-matched Mark Duncan had little justification for the long flight to Japan as he was submitted by former Champion Takeshi Inoue. Turning his back to avoid Lion's ground and pound assault, Duncan succumbed to a rear naked choke. After the bout, Lion announced his intention to capture the Pacific Rim Lightweight title before attempting to regain the world title he lost to Akitoshi Tamura in May.

Shooto Pac Rim Welterweight Champion Takashi Nakakura also left the ring early, dispatching Jani Lax in the first round with a heel hook in a non-title bout.

Shooto World Bantamweight Champion Shinichi Kojima was on vacation from defending his strap after his epic battle with Yasuhiro Urushitani in March. Here Kojima participated in a non-title bout with up-and-comer Yasuhiro Akagi. Much of the first round was spent in Akagi's guard as he held Kojima's head in an unsecured guillotine. 'BJ' however received the better of the prior stand-up exchanges and finished the round with ground and pound after escaping Akagi's grasp.

In the second, Kojima went after Akagi in the stand-up, damaging him with straights and forcing Akagi to look for a takedown. Akagi stuffed Kojima into a corner with just that in mind but was forced away by Kojima, who scored his own takedown after a quick 1-2. Akagi unsuccessfully grasped for a guillotine and delayed Kojima's ground and pound enough to force a stand-up. Kojima began to take over the stand-up again, but fell victim to a takedown in the process. Scoring some strikes from the top, Akagi was soon reversed. Avoiding a rain of punches, Akagi escaped to his feet where both ended the round in a slug fest.

The third round saw Akagi attempt a takedown, only to be outmaneuvered by Kojima who'd taken the youngster's back with a duck under. Akagi sought to thwart his efforts however by holding Kojima's left arm, only to be forced to capitulate to Kojima's demand for complete standing back control with a violent punch to the head. As Kojima began to secure a rear naked choke with his newly freed arm Akagi's ear began to bleed intensely, calling for a doctor check. The bleeding is too severe and the fight is waved off in Kojima's favor.

The night's finale saw reigning Shooto Light Heavyweight Champion Shikou Yamashita lose his title against the relatively unknown Siyar Bahadurzada, fighting out of Stephen Tapilatu's Tatsujin Dojo, also home to Women's MMA star Marloes Coenens.

Bahadurzada filled out the first round frustrating Yamashita's attempts to escape his stand-up. With a definite reach advantage and strong sense of timing, Bahadurzada saw Yamashita's shots coming a mile away, fiercely countering and overwhelming Yamashita in the stand-up.

The second round was a genetic replica of the first, the only mutation being Yamashita's attempt at a standing guillotine near the end which Bahadurzada escaped.

Luck seemed to finally be on Yamashita's side as he succeeding in taking down Bahadurzada, though even here his efforts were unfruitful as they met Bahadurzada's rubber guard. A return to the feet saw Yamashita attempt another takedown only to be grounded himself by Bahadurzada, who finished the round throwing knees to Yamashita's body from side control and earning himself the title of Shooto World Light Heavyweight Champion.

Sakakibara Speaks On The Record
by Jordan Breen

To say it's a busy couple of days for Japanese MMA would be an understatement, and that goes for both in the domestic product and the exports.

One of Japan's top welterweight talents, Kuniyoshi Hironaka, has announced his return to the octagon for a September bout sure to bring some sizzle to the 170-pound class. Meanwhile, longtime Pancrase mainstay Yoshiki Takahashi has just split with the home of the Hybrid Wrestlers, but he's set to land in New Jersey this weekend for his bout with Mark Burch in bodogFIGHT.

Takahashi isn't the only Pancrase standout making the trek, as Yuki Kondo is recovered and ready to add to his trophy case against Trevor Prangley.

A quartet of females -- Megumi Yabushita, Yoko Takahashi, Sumie Sakai, and Taeko Nagamine -- are all set to flaunt their fight skills in Fatal Femmes Fighting this Saturday night.

The next few days also has big cards from Shooto and HERO'S in Japan, and while they'll get some high profile attention, it wouldn't be righteous to ignore Japan's quirkiest RINGS offshoot. ZST is back, with their rookies ready to roll in South Tokyo for the 12th installment of SWAT!

Finally, Nobuyuki Sakakibara sat down and spoke for the first time in over three months this past weekend. So, what did Sakakibara have to say? Well, more than you probably expected. The former DSE boss had an interesting alleged anecdote about the bodogFIGHT brass, and some less than flattering words for one Ed Fishman.

Sakakibara speaks stirringly in Kamipro sit-down

It was reported in this column two weeks ago that former Dream Stage Entertainment president Nobuyuki Sakakibara would make his first public appearance in three months on July 7, at a public talk show event sponsored by combat sports periodical Kami no Puroresu.

So, what's the deal with that?

It was expected that just over 100 people would turn up to Daikanyama Air for the event, titled "kamipro BOM-BA-YE Kamikaze". Instead, and despite a $25 ticket price, over 200 patrons showed up the Tokyo club to hear Sakakibara speak publicly for the first time since the now historic March 27 press conference in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo, which all but formalized Dream Stage Entertainment's split with the PRIDE Fighting Championships.

However, it was actually DEEP president and PRIDE public relations officer Shigeru Saeki who spoke first. Saeki spoke only briefly, touching on the topic of the reborn PRIDE. Saeki stated that in honesty, he didn't know what was happening in regards to management, and that he felt that the lack of information stemmed from new management not communicating with former employees and fighters.

Sakakibara spoke on a variety of topics, many of which addressed the final days of PRIDE. Among the most intriguing comments made by Sakakibara surrounded Fedor Emelianenko and bodogFIGHT, and Ed Fishman and Lorenzo Fertitta.

Sakakibara told the crowd that prior to PRIDE's stateside debut last October, bodogFIGHT had offered PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko $500,000 to walk away from his main event bout with Mark Coleman. Sakakibara stated that Emelianenko told DSE officials about the offer, and as a reward for turning down bodog's offer, they doubled the champion's fight purse for the bout.

Furthermore, Sakakibara told the audience that he felt Zuffa and PRIDE FC Worldwide Holdings chief Lorenzo Fertitta was a man of character, who could be trusted with PRIDE's assets. More intriguingly, Sakakibara drew a stark contrast between Fertitta and former PRIDE USA president Ed Fishman, who Sakakibara disparaged as a fake, or an imposter in the fight game.

Also, Sakakibara stated that he was in the process of penning a book about his days with Dream Stage Entertainment and the inner workings of the PRIDE organization. The book is scheduled for release this coming October, and Sakakibara stated that he hoped editors would not shave off much of what he expects to be a very lengthy, detailed story.

To Master, with love
Romero Jacare: Alliance BJJ

By Rafael Quintanilha

Alliance is a great academy. In fact, it is much more than that. The name resonates throughout Brazil, the United States, and wherever else there are people fighting, or talking of Jiu-Jitsu. Regularly producing world champions, Alliance has two branches in the USA. And who is the brains behind all this? Romero Jacare.

Jacare opened the Sandy Springs academy in 1996, and recently one in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, which he speaks of with pride. “It has four official mat areas,” he says. “I have a base number of 300 students training Jiu-Jitsu and muay thai. Around here Jean Charles Cobrinha and I teach, and we have Manu Ntho teaching muay thai. And as I've already been here for 11 years, there are students of mine already teaching classes as well."

To keep up the excellent tournament results, Alliance BJJ's work is geared towards competition. “So much so that in the Pan we won the master and senior division for the third time, drew with ATT in the youth category, and we took second overall in the adult – right after Gracie Barra,” the teacher recounts by heart. But that is not all: “Of the 16 athletes that made it to the finals of ADCC 2007, nine have been through Allliance.”

But who is Romero Jacare, and where does this colossus called Alliance come from? According to the master, it all began with Rolls Gracie. Jacare is one of six black belts promoted by the legendary fighter, who died tragically, in a hang gliding accident in Visconde de Maua, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Born in 1952, at 16 years of age Jacare entered the Gracie Academy in Copacabana, the neighborhood where he lived. After competing a lot and working in the academy between 1972 and 85, Jacare would start his own academy, in the neighboring borough of Ipanema. Shortly thereafter it would become Alliance. And with it came titles. Among the geniuses to pass through the academy are such illustrious fighters as Fabio Gurgel, Roberto Traven, Rodrigo Comprido, Leozinho Vieria, Fernando Terere, Jamelao, etc.

It was in 1971 that, at Gracie Academy, Jacare met his mentor. “Rolls was a young and polite guy wearing a kimono wrapped with a black belt. When I asked who he was, they said, ‘This guy will be champion of the family very soon.’” The following year, Jacare moved to New York to study, And, one fine day, the educated young man showed up at his apartment out of the blue. The two became great friends and, back in Brazil, they trained together from 1974 to 1982, the year of Rolls’ death, which happened only four months after he awarded Jacare his black belt.

Jacare always says he owes it all to Rolls, and it is pure Jiu-Jitsu from one of the greatest of all times that he teaches. But don’t take my word for it. Visit Alliance or enter www.alliancebjj.com and find out for yourself.

Zuffa Nixes Nick Diaz from Pride

We will be running a series on a seldom seen look at the behind the scenes workings that ultimately lead to the ouster of Nick Diaz from the new Pride organization. In our opinion this ouster had everything to do with Nick's participation in the EliteXC organization and nothing to do with Zuffa's technical grounds. Everyday this week we will post corresponding emails and let you the reader be the ultimate judge.

Sherk to defend lightweight crown against Penn

UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk will make his second title defense when he faces former UFC welterweight champion
BJ Penn in November.

Sherk (35-2-1) retained his title Saturday by beating Hermes Franca via unanimous decision in a five-round contest.

Penn (11-4-1) fought last month and defeated former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver in the main event of the Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale.

This will be Penn's second attempt at the lightweight strap. His first title shot was at UFC 35 in January 2002, when he lost a majority decision to Pulver.

Sherk was asked during the UFC 73 press conference about the announcement of the matchup with Penn.

"I've been competing my whole life. And my mentality is, I'm going to fight whoever you put in the cage with me. [It] doesn't matter. I figured it's going to be BJ Penn anyway, so it's not going to be a surprise."

The 33-year-old Minnesotan won the vacant title by unanimous decision over Kenny Florian at UFC 64.

LIDDELL READY TO GO, WANDERLEI NOT SO MUCH
by Damon Martin & Jeff Cain

After much speculation and rumor about former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell returning to the Octagon on September 22nd to take on former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva, MMAWeekly has confirmed that the fight is officially off.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports interviwed UFC president Dana White and it was reported that a intermediary from Silva’s Chute Boxe camp informed the UFC that he did not want to fight Liddell and now the organization is trying to secure a main event for the pay-per-view taking place in Anaheim.

When MMAWeekly contacted Chuck Liddell, the former UFC light heavyweight champ commented, "To my knowledge, he turned it down, but I don't pay attention much until they tell me it's time to go. There is never any problem with me signing to fight."

Obviously this news is stunning as Wanderlei Silva has always taken on top competition in the past and Liddell would be no exception but coming off of back to back losses, this is a critical point in Silva’s career and he needs to get a win but one would think beating Liddell would be the type of high profile victory the former Pride champion would want.

White also commented that there is a chance they could bring in another fighter to face Liddell in the main event but as of right now no names have been mentioned as the dream match that so many MMA fans have wished for is dead, at least for now.

Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for more news on this story as it happens.

Liddell vs Silva Rumors

By Loretta Hunt

Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole was able to get the word from the horse’s mouth Thursday, putting to rest rampant Internet rumors that former PRIDE champion Wanderlei Silva and former UFC champion Chuck Liddell would finally meet on Sept. 22 for UFC 76 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. UFC president Dana White told Iole that Silva turned down the bout through a Chute Boxe rep yesterday, leaving the promotion without a marquee headliner for the anticipated date.

"This just happened (Wednesday afternoon) and I'm not sure what we're going to do," White told Iole. "We're trying to figure it out. It's not a fun time right now."

By Brian Knapp

John Hackleman, trainer for former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, denied reports Wednesday that a fight between Liddell and Brazilian legend Wanderlei Silva had been verbally agreed upon.

“This is news to us,” Hackleman said. “As of this evening, we have not been notified by the UFC.”

Rumors are swirling regarding a potential bout between Liddell and Silva at UFC 76 Sept. 22 in Anaheim, Calif. Both Liddell (20-4) and Silva (31-7-1) are on the mend following losses to Quinton Jackson and Dan Henderson, respectively. In fact, Silva has been knocked out in each of his past two fights.

The thought of an eventual confrontation between the two has been a hot topic among MMA fans and promoters for years.

The perfect championship
Six-time world champion speaks of final preparations for shining in any Jiu-Jitsu tournament

By Saulo Ribeiro

›› If you are still “in college,” or in other words, brown belt and below, it is hard to study your adversaries since you don’t have much access to videos of these belt groups, with the exception of such notables as Roger, Garcia, Bráulio and Jacaré during their times. So, the most you will be able to hope for will be to fall into a good bracket. If you’ve already finished college and are doing your “post-grad,” up until you’ve been a black belt for five years, you will be studying your main adversaries way too much. Never study them at night, because that messes with your adrenaline and leaves you squirming in your bed when it's time to sleep. Before training and at the end of the afternoon are the best times.

›› On championship weekend, no fight videos! It’s time to give the mind a rest. Go to the movies, or rent a bunch of comedies, to put you in a different mood.

›› A fight is won on its eve! Your success will be the fruit of good training and perfect preparations. Set the day before aside to stock your war supplies: water in abundance (don’t take sips from others), fruits like apples, bananas, oranges and tangerines; granola, coconut water and an amino-acid supplement for the break between fights. I like to drink coffee and milk in the morning with a white cheese sandwich, but if I’m only going to fight in the afternoon I'll have a chicken breast as well! At tournament time, don't be drinking any of your friends' magic potions! Generally you would assign a trustworthy blue or purple belt the mission of transporting everything, someone you have confidence in.

›› Designate someone to drive. You shouldn't even think of driving on this day! Your mind needs to be focused only on the fight. Someone to film it is always cool, after all the magic and unforgettable moments never come back. Surround yourself with people that don’t crowd you, and that preferably don’t talk much. It will be a day for introspection, calm music playing on the iPod, and lots of stretching.

›› Plan to always arrive at the gymnasium two hours beforehand, and choose a spot to be your refuge. Championships are not nightclubs where you are supposed to be sociable with everybody! Have someone designated to deal with emergencies and unexpected situations. Don't forget the flip-flops to refresh the feet, no wearing sneakers and socks!

›› Start with mild stretching. When there is an hour to go before battle it's time to put the armor on! Always take an extra gi and choose someone to fight for grips with you with thirty minutes to go. Drink water the whole time, even when you're not thirsty! At times you should opt for a good mouth wash, to get rid of that dryness in the mouth, and no soft drinks!

›› Remember that the mission is to take the title, and if you put on a show but don't win your mission is not complete, if it had been a war you would be dead! Lay your strategy and follow your plan! Don't be thinking what the other "could do if…” Remember that the lion that bites first sees the other in agony first, so don’t stop biting!

›› Having a positive attitude is everything, great training and good vibes!

Gurgel on ice for indefinite period
Broken jaw from Saraiva fight to be operated

In the report released after UFC 73, last Saturday, in Las Vegas, the Nevada State Athletic Commission made it known that the Brazilian fighter Jorge Gurgel is suspended for an indefinite period. The reason is a fracture of the American Top Team member’s jaw that happened during the battle with the also-Brazilian Diego Saraiva.

The injury happened in the beginning of the second round, but even so Gurgel carried on in the fight and won by unanimous decision. To correct the problem, the fighter will undergo surgery in the coming days. The time it will take for his return to the rings depends on his post-surgery recovery.

Also according to the Athletic Commission, the Brazilian Rodrigo Minotauro has been given preventive suspension of 30 days, half the time imposed on Heath Herring, defeated by the Brazilian, who presented lacerations in the cheek region, in one of the eyebrows and the nose.

Rex Richards: Next Victim of the Tom Erikson Syndrome?
By Evan South

Tom Erikson syndrome- Defined as a syndrome where a fighter is consistently ducked or avoided and has trouble finding opponents. The next fighter who may suffer from this could be Rex Richards, a young super-heavyweight who is undefeated and incredibly dangerous.
How dangerous? His last fight at Strikeforce this past June lasted only 34 seconds.

“I sensed that I hurt him (opponent Ray Seraille) early on and that’s why I went straight for the attack” said Rex about the quick bout. “I threw a quick combo and a leg kick and I could see that it hurt him, I got him against the cage, the ref broke us up and I could see that I could maybe charge him with a couple punches and get him down and ended up knocking him out.”

Rex’s previous fight at Strikeforce last December also went quickly. Rex reflected on his last bout stating “I didn’t even throw a standing punch. I took the guy down, did a little ground and pound and went for the submission.” So far Rex’s 4 pro fights have lasted a total of approximately 5 and a half minutes. Does he worry these quick fights are not preparing him for a long drawn out war?

“That’s yet to be seen” replied Rex. “I train like I’m doing 12 rounds so I think I go into every fight prepared as far as cardio, technique, everything for the 5 minute rounds. That’s something we’re going to find out down the road, how I can continue and react to going the full rounds. I’m sure we’ll see that in the future. I think as hard as I train there will be no problem with that.”

Rex is already used to opponents changing regularly and this last fight was no exception. Concerning that situation Rex said “That’s part of the reason I went into that fight a little more pissed off than normal. I’m a creature of habit, I played football a long time, I watch film, I study. I didn’t have much detail on the previous guy I was going to fight, however I was training for a particular style and body type and it changed and that’s kind of the reason I went in there, took care of business, took a shower and went home.”

Rex mentioned playing football and is best known to some as a former lineman for the San Jose Sabercats. What would make someone go from a promising football career to the uncertain world of MMA? Rex answers “My football career was going very well, I was with a team I really enjoyed, but I decided MMA is going to be a bigger thing in my life. I’ve always enjoyed fighting more than football. This last football season I signed a Strikeforce contract and decided to do MMA full time. I see a lot of opportunity in MMA and just want to be involved in it. There is something in me that I always wanted and needed this as a career. If there was a big
UFC on and the Superbowl, I would be in the other room watching UFC.”

Regarding the aforementioned Tom Erikson syndrome Rex had the following thoughts: “I think I’m in a really weird place right now, I think I’m in a place where I need to make a big jump up in the fights. I’m also still in a bad position that I don’t know if any of these big name guys want to go out and risk a loss. I’m hungry, I consider myself a very athletic fighter. I think I have a lot to offer the super heavyweight category and maybe down the road the heavyweight division.”

Rex is 6' 5" and walks around 305lbs. Would he be willing and able to cut to heavyweight?

“If I could do it” answers Rex. “I don’t know if my frame will allow it. I haven’t been under 270 lbs since I was a junior in high school. I would make the cut if I knew something in particular was going to happen (as in a specific match up) and I could stop everything I was doing and concentrate on training to get prepared for that. I know I would be very explosive and very strong at heavyweight. That’s something I would like to consider down the road but right now it’s tough. I’ve got a really big, thick frame. It would be a battle to get to heavyweight but I think I could do it and I could be really strong at heavyweight.”

Currently surveying the super heavyweight field, Rex did mention a few names of who he would like to face. “I’d like to fight Brock Lesnar. I know not a whole lot of people want to get on him right now. Ron Waterman has been mentioned as a future fight maybe with another promotion I’m going to do some work with too.”

In relation to pay as part of stepping up in competition Rex had the following to say: “I’m not going to turn down a fight with any of those guys, but I’m not going to fight the #1 guy in the world for what a prelim guy is making. I’ve got to make a smart career choice.”

So what is next for Rex Richards? “Strikeforce will probably be my next fight but I have an open (non-exclusive) contract with them, so I can go fight for other companies as long as they can match what Strikeforce is paying me. I have 4 more fights left with Strikforce. Strikeforce was cool to offer that kind of contract to me. I’m just looking for big fights that will boost the career. I’m thinking about doing the Mundials in August in Los Angeles as a brown belt. I would like to win the brown belt division. I definitely want to get my next fight in by September.”

Rex closed by talking about the type of fighter he wants to be. “I like to finish my fights. I want to be exciting. I want to be that fighter the fans say they want to see again.”

With the birth of his first child (daughter Riley) this past April Rex summarized everything best by saying: “A lot of good things happening right now”. As long as that Erickson syndrome will stay at bay...

Dana White Interview
Some highlights from ESPN's interview with Dana White:

On the proposed Marlon Sims v. Noah Thomas at the TUF 5 Finale:

DW: Spike really wanted that fight to happen, and we ended up booking the fight. Then I realized, 'How the [expletive] did we book that fight?' That fight will probably happen somewhere else, but it won't happen in the UFC.

On which titles will be up for grabs in the Rampage/Hendo fight at UFC 75:

DW: It will absolutely be a unification bout. We have to respect Henderson's titles. He knocked out Wanderlei Silva and had the 185-pound championship. When he fights Rampage, they both have belts. Why should Dan Henderson get the UFC title if Rampage can't get the PRIDE titles? It makes one of them the undisputed guy.

On whether or not Wanderlei Silva will be fighting Chuck Liddell anytime soon:

DW: God, I hope so. So many people have wanted to see that fight for so many years, and PRIDE basically killed the fight. Now that Chuck has lost, the fight makes more sense and I'd love to make it happen. We're on the phone every day with fighters and fighters' managers. There's still work to be done.

On the rumors of a possible UFC event in New Jersey:

DW: It's true, it's true. It's going to happen. We haven't announced it yet, but it will be a pay-per-view.

On whether or not he cares about other promotions:

DW: I actually watched the IFL once, and it was [expletive] painful. These guys are minor-league shows. They're necessary. I need them to exist, to continue to pay money to put on their shows. I need them to create more talent and get guys experience in fighting. But I don't worry about them. I'll give you an example. There are races going on all over the country, every weekend. But you know when NASCAR rolls in to town.

On Frank Shamrock:

DW: Who knows? But Frank is such a moron. He's so hard to deal with. He really is a jackass. If I could get it done, maybe I would. Look at me and Tito. We don't get along at all. You won't ever find two people who work together talk more [expletive] about each other. Tito's an idiot. He's a complete, absolute moron. But we can do business.

On getting Fedor:

DW: We'll have him soon. We'll have him before the end of the year.

On the proposed Super Bowl of MMA:

DW: I don't know what we're going to do yet because that thing is so messed up. We're still trying to figure it out. It's a complete disaster. They went out of business for a reason.

SHOGUN VS LYOTO OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED
by Damon Martin

Since winning Pride’s middleweight Grand Prix in 2005, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has been considered one of the top 205lb fighters in the world and is currently ranked #1 in that weight class by MMAWeekly.com but now the Chute Boxe fighter is finally set to make his UFC debut on September 22nd in Anaheim where he will take on Ryoto “Lyoto” Machida.

Shogun has been waiting to make his official debut in the Octagon after the organization made the announcement some months ago that they had signed him to a deal that would put him in the UFC. Rua has faced and defeated some of the top names in the 205lb division over the last few years including Ricardo Arona, Quinton Jackson, Kazuhiro Nakamura and many others along the way.

Lyoto Machida is currently undefeated as a professional fighter and came to the UFC as part of the buy out of the WFA and has 2 wins under his belt since coming into the organization. Machida had already gained much hype and notoriety by knocking out former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin back in 2003 and now he will face the toughest competition of his career when he squares off against Shogun.

With so much hype leading into Shogun’s debut and seeing as Machida is top competition, it would make sense that if the Chute Boxe fighter can defeat Lyoto he would be set up perfectly to face the winner of the fight between Dan Henderson and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson which will unify the light heavyweight belts on September 5th in England.

UFC 76 will take place in Anaheim, California on September 22nd where Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will make his official Octagon debut against Lyoto Machida.

UFC Junkie: Shogun vs Lyoto
Rudimar Fedrigo does not confirm

“To me this information is news. I can’t confirm anything.” That was the reaction of Rudimar Fedrigo, Chute Boxe leader, when chased down by GRACIEMAG.com to comment on the bulletin published on UFC Junkie. On the page (www.ufcjunkie.com), the American site announced that Dana White, UFC president, revealed in an interview that aired today on American ESPN that Mauricio Shogun will debut in the octagon at UFC 76. What is more, the fighter from Paraná’s first opponent will be his compatriot Lyoto Machida, undefeated with 10 wins on his MMA record.

UFC 76 is expected to take place on September 22, in the Californian city of Anaheim.

Stay tuned. Soon GRACIEMAG.com will bring more news on Shogun’s debut in the UFC.

"THIS THING IS A UNIFICATION TITLE BOUT"

Onzuka.com & Fighters' Club TV Exclusive: After the seminar at O2 Martial Arts Academy last Sunday, I talked to Dan Henderson and he told us that he will stay at Light heavyweight in the UFC. He did not rule out fighting at Middleweight, but seemed to be more receptive to possibly moving up to Heavyweight.

"I've been saying all along this thing is a unification title bout, Pride Champion vs. UFC Champion. The guy that walks away walks away with the unified, undisputed light heavyweight champion of the world."

Those are the words of UFC President Dana White at the UFC 73 press conference when speaking about the fight between current UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Pride 205lb champion Dan Henderson that will take place at UFC 75 in England on September 8th.

Rumors have circled for the last few weeks that the fight would be only for the UFC light heavyweight title and have gone as far as that the bout would be a non-title fight all together. Dana White’s comments confirm that the bout between Jackson and Henderson will be the first ever title unification bout since Zuffa purchased Pride recently.

Dan Henderson is also in a peculiar position because he was both the Pride 205 and 185lb champions before the organization was bought out and with White’s comments about the title fight with Rampage in September, questions have been raised if Henderson would also fight at middleweight in the UFC, but the president confirmed that the Team Quest member would be staying put at light heavyweight per his request.

“I thought when Dan Henderson came to the UFC that he'd want to fight at middleweight. He said he feels much more comfortable at light heavyweight and that's where he wants to stay. As of right now he's a light heavyweight,” said UFC president Dana White at the UFC 73 post fight press conference.

So with Henderson solidified at light heavyweight and the bout with Rampage all set to be a title unification bout, the UFC has now added a top ten fighter to their stable of 205-pounders and will have the first ever true world champion in MMA.

Local Boys Fight in the Mainland!
News Release – Island Promotions

For Immediate Release

Eugene, Oregon (July 28, 2007): Rise Fighting Championship (RFC) will bring hot Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) action to northwest fans this summer.

MMA brings the best of all martial arts into the same ring and is rapidly gaining popularity as an international sport. Combining striking from boxing and Muay Thai disciplines, takedowns from Judo and Russian Sambo, and ground techniques from wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitus, MMA is changing the world of martial arts and ring sport.

“Bragging Rights,” the event theme, will feature national-level fights between Harris Sarmiento and Enoch Wilson and Andy Lukesh and Dave Moreno. During the last RFC event, Sarmeinto and Wilson faced off in the ring, with Sarmiento challenging Wilson to fight him on the feet. Wilson said he would oblige at Bragging Rights.

Fighting out of 808 Fight Factory (Honolulu, HI) Harris Sarmiento carries a 20-15-0 (win-loss-draw) professional record and likes to end his fight by knockout. Known for his outstanding standup game and solid takedown defense, Sarmiento has faced elite competition throughout his accomplished career, including wars against Nick Diaz (Ultimate Fighting Championships -- UFC -- and Pride veteran), Rob McCullough (current World Extreme Cagefighting -- WEC -- lightweight champion), K. J. Noons (Elite XC veteran) and Roger Huerta (recently showcased on the cover of Sports Illustrated and current UFC fighter). Highlights of his career include a tournament win in the eight-fighter tourney at Rumble on the Rock (Honolulu, HI 2005). He currently trains with Ronald Juhn and Falaniko Vitale (UFC veterans).

Facing off against Sarmiento will be Northwest's own, Enoch Wilson. Wilson, fighting out of Oregon Jiu Jitsu (Tigard, OR), brings a professional record of 8-4-1 into his fight with Sarmiento. His strength is on the ground, but he is a fighter that is more than willing to fight on his feet. Known for his fast-paced action in both the cage and ring, Wilson has fought John Gunderson (Bend, OR), Ian Loveland (Gresham, OR), and Urijah Faber (current WEC featherweigh t champion). Wilson has been featured on MSNBC's Warrior Nation.

With a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and currently fighting out of Penn MMA (Hilo, HI), Dave Moreno (4-2) is known for his conditioning and ending fights with submissions on the ground. Although he just recently turned pro, Moreno has fought against elite competition. Currently working on his standup skills with Rudy Valentino, Moreno looks to bring a rounded game to his match against Andy Lukesh.

Andy Lukesh (2-1), also recently turning pro, brings a solid ground game into his match with Moreno. Training out of Impact Jiu Jitsu (Beaverton, OR), Lukesh comes from a wrestling background and holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In his last professional fight at RFC, Lukesh dominated Moreno's teammate, Donald Gonzales, and looks to do the same against Moreno.

Rise Fighting Championship is quickly establishing itself as the premier MMA event in the Pacific Northwest. All fights are held in a ring, and fights are competitive and exciting. RFC focuses on exciting matches, showcasing fighters, and making fighters accessible to fight fans.

Fighter weigh ins will take place at 12 pm on the 27th of July at the Lane County Fairgrounds and will be open to the media. Media access to fighters will follow after the weigh ins.

GUIDA VS. AURELIO AT UFC 74

The card for UFC 74 continues to grow, as MMAWeekly has confirmed that Clay Guida will take on the debuting Marcus Aurelio in lightweight action that will be featured on the main card of the pay-per-view.

Clay Guida was last seen at UFC 72 where he lost a close decision after putting on Fight of the Night against Tyson Griffin. Guida is a former veteran of many organizations including the WEC and StrikeForce and since his debut in the UFC has gone 1-2 with both losses coming in razor close decisions against Din Thomas and the afore mentioned Tyson Griffin.

Marcus Aurelio will be making his UFC debut in August and fans will be treated to a world class grappler who trains out of American Top Team and is also the man who gave Jorge Gurgel his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Aurelio made his biggest mark in MMA by defeating Pride lightweight champion Takanori Gomi in April 2006. Aurelio made short work of the champion, choking him out early in the first round, but lost a close split decision when they rematched later in the year with the Pride lightweight title on the line.

Clay Guida confirmed that he has signed the contract as of Tuesday and will start preparing for the bout with Aurelio. The main card for UFC 74 is still being filled out but the addition of Guida vs Aurelio guarantees the lightweights will once again take the main stage with a distinct possibility of again pulling of Fight of the Night.

UFC 74 takes place on August 25 in Las Vegas.

JORGE GURGEL COMMENTS ON INJURIES

Following his bout with Diego Saraiva at UFC 73, much speculation has been circulating concerning the health of former Ultimate Fighter competitor Jorge Gurgel due to a slugfest that resulted in the pair earning Fight of the Night from the UFC.

When reached for comment by MMAWeekly’s Damon Martin, Gurgel confirmed that he is having surgery to wire his broken jaw shut but he will be able to train even with the injury.

“It happened at the beginning of the 2nd round,” said Gurgel. “I knew I broke my jaw but there was nothing I could do about it then so I just kept fighting.”

Rumors circulated that Gurgel sustained many other injuries during the bout that forced him to go to the hospital including urinating blood that worried many fans about his overall health following the fight.

Gurgel was quick to comment that following the fight, the broken jaw was the only real injury he sustained and all the other rumors concerning his health were simply not true.

Time will tell following the surgery how long it will be before Gurgel is back in the Octagon but he will continue to work at his school in Cincinnati Ohio as the city is also preparing the imminent arrival of the UFC in October.

Dr. Goldman Video

For those not in the know. Dr. Goldman is a zone healer that treated the likes of BJ Penn and Charuto Verissimo with phenomenal results. This a great video interview to see what zone healing is all about as well as an opportunity to see Dr. Goldman treat someone and how fast the session is.
Next time I'm in California, I plan on seeing if I can slip in for an adjustment.

JOSH BARNETT OFFICIALLY A FREE AGENT

Since Zuffa’s official purchase of Pride, many fighters have started popping up from the former Japanese powerhouse organization in new homes. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is in the UFC along with former Grand Prix winner Mauricio “Shogun” Rua who is expected to make his debut shortly. Paulo Filho will soon take his shot in the WEC and now one of the most sought after heavyweights in the world, Josh Barnett, is officially a free agent according to his blog on MySpace.

Let the bidding begin.

Barnett, who is the #4 heavyweight in the MMAWeekly World MMA Rankings, has recently been spotted at a couple of Bodog’s promotions, which has prompted many fans to assume that’s where they will next see the former UFC champion, but Barnett says not so fast.

In a message from his MySpace blog, Barnett commented, “Many have seen me on Bodog and may think I am automatically headed to or signed with them. While I have a good relationship with the promoters and have two fighters fighting next season, I have not signed any deals with Bodog.”

With Bodog seemingly in the running to secure Barnett’s services, fans then turn to ask about his former employer, the UFC.

Barnett said, “Truthfully, I have spoken with Dana and Lorenzo recently and the UFC is well aware that I have no beef with them. There are no personal issues keeping me from signing with the UFC. I just have not received any offers from them yet.”

Time will only tell where the current #4 ranked heavyweight will sign with an organization, but Barnett makes it clear that he will have an instant impact.

“I am looking to get back in the game and I want to be with a promotion that treats me as a valuable part of the organization. I hope I can find that kind of place this time around, not just for my sake, but also for all of my fans worldwide as well. Now… who's ready to see somebody get buried into the canvas?” said Barnett.

Along with Fedor Emelianenko, Barnett has to be considered the prize of the heavyweight class not currently fighting in a promotion and hopefully now that he is officially free of his entanglements with Pride, we will see the “Baby Faced Assassin” sooner rather than later.

Gesias assess K-1 fight against Masato

Last year Hero’s GP championship, and appointed as the favorite this year GP, that has the first stage schedule for July 16, Gesias Cabalcanti adventure himself, in last June 28, at K-1 rules, fighting against japonese fighter Masato. “This fight was an amazing experience. I just had tree weeks to prepare me witj only Muay Thai, and I face one of the events champ. For sure it was very positive for my side”, said Gesias, preparing himself for Hero’s GP.

— Now I have to put all this training and experience together to get in the GP and see what is going to happen. I am exciting, after been out since October because of my hand. Each day that pass is a new experience, a new lesson, and nothing better that enjoy good things at life and live better — said the “philosopher” and ATT black belt, Gesias Cavalcanti.

A WORD FROM THE ASIAN SENSATION...

…inefficacy.

in·ef·fi·ca·cy (i(n-e(f'i(-k?-se-)

-noun

Lack of power or capacity to produce the desired effect.

On paper, UFC 73 had the potential to be a blockbuster card. The UFC put together a line-up that was the cause for much excitement and anticipation. Unfortunately, “Stacked” was plagued by inefficacy. Not that it was the worst UFC in history (*cough* UFC 55 *cough*) but it certainly didn’t live up to the hype and expectations. The Sacramento, Calif. crowd was brutal as they were quick to voice their displeasure with a sea of boos. It just goes to show that star power doesn’t necessarily equate to an outstanding show.

One of the exciting aspects of MMA is its unpredictability. Notwithstanding a lack of big names, Ultimate Fight Night 10 was one of the best shows of the year. UFC 72 also turned out to be a solid event in my opinion, despite the pessimism expressed by fans and critics. Conversely, reactions to “Stacked” ranged from disappointment to boredom to somewhat satisfied.

Featuring the title defenses from UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk, UFC 73 also benefited from the drawing power of one of the organization’s most popular fighters, Tito Ortiz. Love or hate him, Tito knows how to sell tickets. After watching his anticipated fight with Rashad Evans culminate in an anti-climactic draw, I think a refund might have been in order. The overly hyped grudge match was a disappointment to fans and viewers. Hopefully a potential rematch will yield much better results.

Former Pride Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira made his Octagon debut against Heath Herring. Having previously defeated Herring twice, many people expected Nogueira to have an easy entrance into the UFC. A left kick from Herring to the head of “Minotauro” said otherwise. The kick put Nogueira on the mat and the Brazilian was seriously hurt. Inexplicably, the fight wasn’t stopped and Herring even backed off with his strikes, motioning Nogueira to stand back up.

After letting a prime opportunity to finish the fight pass him by, Herring would go on to lose a decision. Not too many people expected to see Nogueira in trouble, especially Nogueira himself.

Overall, UFC 73 “Stacked” was a solid, yet slow-paced event that didn’t quite turn out like the UFC wanted it to. For future reference, the best way to live up to the hype is to not hype at all.

25 Minutes

A light heavyweight in 155-pound clothing? Well, maybe not quite. Sean Sherk’s physical prowess at lightweight can be very disheartening for potential contenders. The man is a beast and his training regiment is unbelievable. The UFC Lightweight Champion’s cardio, control, transitions and strength has been unmatched thus far.

Sherk’s dominance, although impressive, has become rather predictable. I actually found myself hoping for a major upset just so that the fight could be somewhat exciting and I’m pretty sure there were many people who shared my sentiments. With such a physical size advantage and skill set, many fans groused as to why Sherk has been unable to finish an opponent at 155.

Sean Sherk could very well turn into the UFC’s most uncelebrated belt holder if his 25-minute trend continues. In an attempt to satiate future viewers, I offer a pithy suggestion to the UFC:

Stop matching Sherk up against BJJ fighters.

Styles make fights. Although they are unable to overcome Sherk’s powerful wrestling, seasoned grapplers are skilled enough to nullify most of his offense and prevent from sustaining too much damage. The result is a five round wrestling clinic leaving some fans restless.

It’s unfortunate that Sherk’s methodical command of his previous two opponents is viewed as a negative aspect of his game. It may be too soon, however, to assume or predict his ascendancy of the lightweight division until he is matched against fighters with similar strengths. The UFC’s deep 155-pound weight class isn’t lacking in competition and guys like Tyson Griffin, Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida could very well give him a fun for his money in the near future.

Pereira says his event is not clandestine and answers Belfort

After we report, on 3rd july, Vitor Belfort criticizing the site rioheroes.com for producing illegal events of MMA, one of the responsible for the website, the black belt Jorge Pereira, looked us to clarify his point of view and to answer Belfort’s criticize. “It would like to explain to all TATAME readers, that the website rioheroes.com is not illegal in none way, we are a league of fighters, I opened a fights company, totally legalized. I have fighters extremely prepared, some of then, have already participated from events as UFC and others. I want clarify that I have total medical assistance, with ambulance at the academy door, I have complete security supervised by local policemen”, said the promoter, explaining why the fighters don’t use gloves in his events.

“I have letters from our doctors saying that fights without gloves can have less risk to the fighters, even cutting, diminishes the intensity of the collision, because you can break yor hand. The gloves protect only the hands, but they increase the risk of brain injuries. Besides that, I stop the fights at the right time. Those criticizes had come from a person who even passed close to our door and that also has interests in fortifying another show, from his manager, Jorge Guimarães “Joinha”, that is making onother one at Record TV”, affirmed the promoter.
