Rodrigo Gracie
Changing Organization

When Rodrigo Gracie announced choice by K-1 over Pride, lots of people didn't understand the reasons of the changing. From his residence in United States, Renzo Gracie's cousin conceded an exclusive interview to team TATAME, where he talks about his leaving from Pride. He also comments about his future in Japan, his training in US and what did Renzo said when he first knew about him and K-1.

In the end of 2003 you switched Pride by K-1. What did happen?

I was having problems with my manager in Japan and decided to move on. Now I hired Mike Kogan, from K-1. Over there I do have a better life and they will pay me better also.

Why haven't you fight from the new organization?

It seems like K-1 Romanex ended. So they will do another event, but is kind of a secret. K-1 would getting together with another group and I am sure in early November it must happen something good. On the last one, when Royler fought Genki Sudo, they also called me, but it was kind of late..., two weeks before the show. By that time I was handling a new academy and I was not ready. I I decided to not do the fight.

How long have you been living in Unites States? How is your preparation?

I live here since 1991 and I train at my gym, in Limbrook, with my students. I practice Muay Thai in Brooklin and train Boxing and also do physical preparation in New Jersey. Three times a week I go to Manhattan to train my cousin Renzo.

When you switched Pride by K-1, people were saying you hid the information from Renzo...

When I first thought about moving, the very first thing I did was inform Renzo. Then I looked after Royce, who also is my cousin. He helped me to close a new deal with K-1. I've never cheated anyone. The only one that didn't understand was the Pride Japanese, because they don't know about my situation with my ex manager.

How things are between you and Pride?

No way! I want to make it clear I've never had problems with Pride. My problem was my manager. Pride always treated good.

ANOTHER EXECUTION:
HOPKINS KO'S DE LA HOYA IN NINTH ROUND

Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins solidified his hold on the distinction of being the best boxer, pound-for-pound, on the planet, by becoming the first man to knock out the 'Golden Boy,' Oscar De La Hoya, with a blistering left hook to the body followed by a left hook to the head, at 1:38 of the ninth round in their fight Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With his stunning knockout victory, the Philadelphia-based-Hopkins not only retains his WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight crowns, but also adds the WBO title to that list, also becoming the first fighter to hold titles from all four of these sanctioning bodies.

Hopkins, 39, is now 45-2-1 with 32 KOs, while De La Hoya, 31, falls to 37-4 with 29 KOs.

The first eight rounds of this fight were, frankly, not the stuff legends are made of. De La Hoya stood his ground early, seemingly winning several of the opening rounds, as the taller and stronger Hopkins struggled to adjust to De La Hoya's unexpected strategy of standing in front of him. But after a few rounds of little action, a cautious Hopkins slowly but surely adapted to De La Hoya's tactics and began landing regularly both with right hand leads and left jabs.

Even though Hopkins seemed to have the momentum on his side, at the end of eight rounds it was still a relatively close fight, at least on the official judges' scorecards. Two of the judges had Hopkins ahead by lopsided scores of 79-73 and 78-74, but the third judge had De La Hoya leading, 77-75.

All that became academic in the ninth round. Hopkins began relentlessly to press De La Hoya, and then closed the show, seemingly out of nowhere, with his vicious body shot and, as a sort of insurance shot, his left hook to De La Hoya's head. The 'Golden Boy,' whose three previous losses were close decisions, twice to 'Sugar' Shane Mosley and once to Felix 'Tito' Trinidad, crumpled to the canvas and could not arise from his hands and knees as referee Kenny Bayless counted to ten for the knockout.

History will record this as the first time De la Hoya has ever been stopped. This was only his second fight at middleweight, after having won belts at 130, 135, 140, 147, 154, and in June at 160. Hopkins has fought virtually his entire career at middleweight.

For those who missed this pay-per-view broadcast, in the U.S. this fight will be replayed next Saturday night, Sept. 25, on HBO, before the light heavyweight fight between Roy Jones Jr. and Glen Johnson. After Saturday night's fight, Hopkins once again said that he would like to fight Jones, who was the last fighter to beat him, back in 1993.

Super Brawl 37 Announced!

Mayhem and the "The Machine Gun"!

Super Brawl will see a change of venue and a stellar main event Saturday night October 16th. The first annual Super Brawl "West Side Pa'ina" will be held outdoors at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park in Kapolei, Oahu. Atlanta's Jason "Mayhem" Miller will challenge Hawaii's own Ronald "The Machine Gun" Jhun in the Main Event. Super Brawl Promoter T. Jay Thompson will be putting the 170lb Title Belt on the line for this exciting bout. "We've only had two championship titles in Super Brawl's nine year history...we reserve titles for very special occassions. The Jhun - Miller fight is certainly deserving of this."

Jhun, one of Super Brawl's most popular fighters, will be looking to show the Hawaii fans once again, that he is one of the most dangerous fighters in the sport.

With his cocky swagger, brash self-promotion, and scrappy style, Miller may be the most hated athlete ever to compete for the Super Brawl fans. But Miller is more than just talk as he is undefeated in the Super Brawl ring, with his biggest success coming against Egan Inoue in Super Brawl 32. "After punishing Egan (Inoue), I told the Hawaiians that I'd fight their toughest guy. Anytime. Anywhere. I'm not sure why their sending me Jhun. They may call him the "Machine Gun," but after October 16 all he'll be shooting is blanks," boasted the confdent Miller of his October 16 date with the Jhun.

Jhun saw the Milller - Inoue fight up close as he was the event's referee. "Yeah, I heard Miller call out any Hawaii's fighter after Egan lost to him. He didn't have to look far 'cause I was standing right there..."

More details about Super Brawl 37 at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park on October 16 to follow...

UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir was seriously injured last night in a motorcycle accident.

While riding his motorcycle, he was hit by a car and knocked off the bike, and flew 70 feet off his motorcycle, breaking his femur upon landing. Probably the only thing that saved his life was he landed on grass, and suffered no other serious injuries. He underwent surgery to repair the large bone in his leg, which was cracked in two, this afternoon in Las Vegas. The estimates UFC officials have is that he will be out of action for about one year.

No decision has been made regarding the championship that Mir was scheduled to defend in Japan in December against Andrei Arlovski.

ROYCE GRACIE A POSSIBILITY FOR 2005 GRAND PRIX

To the delight of MMA fans all over the world, Pride resurrected the Grand Prix format in 2003 and has continued it since. Last year was the Middleweight tournament and this year the Heavyweight, switching between the two every year.

So who will be in the 2005 Middleweight GP tournament? No one knows of yet, but Pride has an interest in bringing Royce Gracie back into the mix.

MMAweekly spoke to PRIDE officials about whether they had interest in bringing back Royce Gracie for the 2005 GP and they said," Yes, we do. Also, we are interested in having any big names from outside of Pride like 2003."

So there is an interest in Royce, who fought Sakuraba in the first Pride GP in 2000 and lost. It would be great to see how Royce would compete with the top fighters today in a tournament format again. But we just have to wait and see.

"Big names from outside of Pride" could mean many things, probably an interest in Randy "the Natural" Couture or some other UFC fighters, or maybe some K-1 fighters, like Mark Hunt or Stefan Leko who have recently fought within Pride.

UFC TO HOLD HEAVYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT

Will Tank Abbott return for the Tournament?

Coffee Guy, our man on the inside has told us that the UFC intend to hold a Heavyweight Tournament that will determine an Interim Heavyweight Champion. The winner will defend the title until Frank Mir returns to the scene, upon which a fight between the two champions will take place. The tournament will be held over at least two seperate UFC events. It is not known how many competitors the tournament will include, the idea itself is all thats really been 90% confirmed at this stage. In our opinion ZUFFA really have an opportunity to turn this into something really big. Hopefully it wont be some low key four man tourney, hopefully it will at least be an eight man tournament and it will have some decent talent amongst the competitors.

MINOTAURO TO K-1 ?

Minotauro not happy about Fedor retaining the title.

The Japanese media have been reporting that Nogueira Rodrigo Minotauro may be leaving Pride and joining the K-1 organisation. Reports are saying that Minotauro is displeased that Pride did not award victory to him in his fight against Fedor at the Heavyweight Grand Prix which was stopped due to a major cut received by Fedor. This along with poor negotiations with DSE over conditions has lead to Minotauro looking towards K1, the reports suggest.

Officially BTT are refusing to confirm any such rumors. They say they are still negotiating a rematch with Fedor which will be billed by Pride as a Super-Fight.

PULVER FACES TOUGH COMPETITION IN SHOOTBOX TOURNEY

Jens Pulver will makes his Shootboxing debut this weekend entering the promotion’s S-Cup 2004 tournament. Pulver has been testing himself a lot as of late. He made the transition to boxing and did very well. He hasn't lost since his return to MMA over the past year, but now he is taking another step into the unknown in kickboxing.

This isn't just any kickboxing tournament, this features some of the best. Albert Kraus, who beat both Genki Sudo by decision and knocked out Duane Ludwig is one of the favorites.

For those that don’t know, Shootboxing has been around for many, many years; well before the UFC in the United States or Pride in Japan. The rules of shootboxing keep very strict limits on any ground fighting, which basically force the fight back to the feet for most of the bout. You can think of it as, basically, standing mixed martial arts as there are so many limits to the ground game, but submissions are allowed on the feet.

Pulver’s debut in the promotion is no cakewalk. His first bout is against an unknown Chinese fighter, Dai Jyouan. But should he move on in the tournament, the competition could get very stiff indeed. Some of the competition includes fighters such as former K-1 Max Champion Kraus, Thai fighter Changpuek Chorsepasert, and Danish kickboxer and Alex Gong protege Ole Laursen. Katel Kubis is Minotauro Nogueira's Muay Thai coach, while Andy Sauwer ( 94-3-0 ) is the defending Shoot Boxing S-Cup Champ. Let's just say Pulver is a HUGE underdog, but it will be interesting to see how he performs this weekend.

The prize for the eight-man tournament is 5,000,000 Yen or a little more than $45,000 U.S. Also featured on the card in a single bout is Chute Boxe fighter Nilson de Castro.

K-1 will showcase a collection of the most memorable ring wars that have occurred over the course of its 12-year existence during a three-hour Pay-Per-View television broadcast beginning at 8 PM Eastern Standard Time (5 PM Pacific Standard Time) on Sunday, September 26th. InDemand, DirecTV, and TVN will all carry the special television event.

"Best Bouts" will include contests that took place between competitors in the sport's Superheavyweight (200 pounds and above) division between 1993 and the first eight months of 2004. Fights featuring legendary champions Ernesto Hoost, Peter Aerts, and Andy Hug as well as superstars Jerome LeBanner, Ray Sefo, Remy Bonjasky, and Alexey Ignashov will be shown. The matchups that will air are expected to be announced over the course of the next three weeks.

The program is a rare opportunity for fans in The United States to take in a series of historical bouts that were staged during previously non-televised K-1 events overseas.

The "Best Bouts" television broadcast will mark K-1's third United States Pay-Per-View endeavor of this year. On December 4th, the sport will return to pay television and present the "World Grand Prix Finals" year-end finale live from Tokyo, Japan's Tokyo Dome.

K-1 is a martial arts fighting sport that derives its name from its inclusion of a wide array of combat disciplines, including Karate, Kung-Fu, and Kickboxing ("K"), and its intent to determine one champion in one ring ("1"). After being staged for the first time in Japan in 1993 under the direction of founder Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, it later evolved into the country's most popular sport and achieved popular culture status there as its athletes turned into larger-than-life celebrities.

BTT does not confirm K-1 dealing

The Japanese press has been talking a lot about the relationship between K-1 and Pride heavyweight Interim champion Rodrigo Minotauro. The idea was featuring Minotauro at December 31's event. The end of his contract and BTT disagreement with the Pride GP decision would be the reasons for this change, according to the Japanese press. However, the Brazilian Top Team official position stands that they might deal a renovation of his contract and also close a super fight with Russian Emelianenko Fedor.

Besides this fact, BTT admits the dealing with Dream Stage Entertainment has not moved forward. Japanese pressures and exposed a proposal: They might face each other on next December 31, during the Man Festival 2. BTT and Rodrigo Minotauro are not pleased with Pride decision to not continue the Pride GP heavyweight.

N. Marquardt Awarded BJJ Black Belt

Few weeks ago, Nathan Marquardt played host to a seminar at his school, High Altitude Martial Arts. The seminar featured the highest ranking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt to ever visit the state of Colorado, 7th degree Master Ricardo Murgel. While Murgel was in town to do seminars at a couple other local martial arts schools, the highlight of his trip to Colorado had to be the promotion of five time King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt. Pancrase USA's newest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Marquardt was awarded his belt following an intensive 3 hour test conducted personally by Master Murgel. Master Murgel stated that he was extremely impressed with Marquardt's skill level and feels he has world-class abilities.

SIMS BACK ON COURSE FOR UFC TITLE

Wes Sims, the talented heavyweight who has thrilled fans with his exploits in the cage, chalked up yet another victory at Extreme Challenge this week. After a freak loss at Apex:Genesis only last week, Sims bounced back to defeat a tough 350lb monster from the midwest. Big Wes dominated the standup and the ground fighting and looked to be a man on a mission, a man with a title belt in his sights. Sims was heard later to have said he wants another shot at UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Sims was beating Mir in their first fight but was disqualified for using Pride rules. With impressive performances like his most recent one, it shouldn't be long before his wish to fight in the UFC again comes true.

NEWTON LOOKING TO RE-ESTABLISH HIMSELF AT BUSHIDO

With Pride Bushido 5 just around the corner on October 14 the card continues to shape up as MMA Weekly’s Mick Hammond talked with Carlos Newton who will be returning to Japan to face U-File Camp fighter Ryo Chonan in a bout taking place near the 185 lb weight range.

When contacted about the fight Newton said, “I’ve been training hard for my October 14th fight against Chonan. I have seen his fight against Ricardo Almeida (at Bushido 3) and it looked like Ricardo took him down and was just holding him there, so I expect Ryo to fight me like he did Sakurai, to stand up and keep coming and coming.”

Newton continued the conversation by commenting on moving up in weight to 185 lbs and how it’s effected his performances, “I’m still getting used to the new weight. In the (Daiju) Takase fight (at Bushido 3) I was tentative and wasn’t sure if I was going to feel alright. When I fought against Charuto Verissimo in the UFC things were completely off as I wasn’t able to get below 170lbs for the fight and to be honest I’ve never felt that weak in a fight ever. I’m back on track now and I realize that 185lbs is the place for me and is a fresh start for my career. I’m looking forward to fighting a lot of good fighters at 185lbs and would like to come back to the UFC in the middleweight division and take on guys like Matt Lindland and Phil Baroni.”

The conversation finished out with Newton continuing on the subject of changing weight divisions, “I think a lot of welterweights are going to be moving up this next year. A lot of guys in the division are around my age (28) and we just get bigger and grow with age. I’ve gotten larger as I’ve gotten older and am still filling out. I feel healthy and I think a lot of other fighters once they get used to the change will find they feel the same. Proportionately I think I’m faster now than I was compared to the welterweight division and I was a pretty fast welterweight. Now I’m just a bit bigger and am going to completely out-speed the larger competition.”

RILEY BACK IN STATES FROM BRAZIL
by Jeff Cain

Aaron Riley has fought twenty nine professional MMA fights in his career with a record of 21-7-1. All of those fights were at 170 pounds. After a career of fighting at a weight that he pretty much walked around at, Aaron has dropped down a weight division.

Riley recently got back to the States after fighting and winning in Brazil in his first fight at 155 pounds. MMAWeekly spoke with him about fighting in Brazil, his new weight, and what the future for him may hold.

Aaron Riley's trip to Brazil was everything he thought and was told it would be. He had a great time and can't wait to get back there. He fought Maycon Alarcao in Absolute Fighting Championships' first event held in Brazil and came away with the win. Riley said, "The show went really smoothly for the first time there," and added that the crowd was really good. "It was a great experience. It's kinda like the motherland, so to speak, for MMA," stated Aaron.

Riley trains at American Top Team and said training there is a "great experience." They have a lot of fighters who train there and fighters from Brazil always coming and going. This week, Minotauro Nogueira was at their facility.

Some fighters are affected by competing in a foreign land but Riley isn't one of them. He said, "For me it doesn't really matter so much. You know, a fight's a fight." He may even fight in another AFC event in Brazil in fact. Right now though, he is "just taking things as they come." This particular fight took place in a ring. Riley has no preference what so ever whether he fights in a cage or a ring.

As previously mentioned, this was Aaron's first match at his new weight. It isn't easy for him to make 155. He said he loves to eat and to make that weight was, "like death." "It's all about keeping a healthy lifestyle," he said. He doesn't think he loses any of his power by dropping the weight and hasn't ruled out competing in the UFC at 155 pounds. It just depends on what comes up.

He's had a couple of epic battles with Yves Edwards and many would love to see another one. Aaron did more than held his own at 170 and would no doubt make an impact in the 155 pound division. The UFC is always looking for fighters who are exciting and can finish. Aaron Riley could be just that guy to spark some interest in the Lightweight division.

INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK: SHELBY WALKER

Shelby Walker could be on the verge of making history. She and Erica Montoya could be the first two women ever to compete in the UFC octagon at UFC 51. MMAWeekly talked with Shelby this week about what it would be like to be the first women's fighter in the famed Octagon.

MMAWeekly: Shelby, how are you?

Shelby Walker: Good, how are you?

MMAWeekly: I'm good. Thanks. First off, got to be some exciting things, I know nothings been signed yet, but I know there's been talk about this first women's fight. If this does come off, what would it be like for you to be able to fight in the octagon? The first woman ever.

Shelby: Of coarse, it's a dream come true. I think every girl gets into this sport with high hopes that they get a big break and the fact that it's just on the horizon is huge for me. I'm very excited. I've worked very, very hard. The first ever female athletes, you know, we just need a break. I hope something good comes out of this. I think Japan's the perfect spot to have this fight.

MMAWeekly: Yeah, it sounds like it. Being able to fight in Japan, it's already well accepted. People like it. Let me ask you. I think there's a lot of pressure on you because it is the first women's fight but more importantly, I think other women are going to want the opportunity to fight in the octagon and it probably puts some pressure on you guys to be exciting just so we can see future women's fights. Do you feel that way or how do you feel about the situation?

Shelby: I feel, I'm honored to be, to even be offered this fight, to be offered the opportunity to take it. I've never been in a boring fight. I have a very pressing, aggressive style. I don't think it's possible for this fight to come out bad.

MMAWeekly: Shelby, do you honestly think that right now women are ready to make that next big jump into a huge event like the UFC and be ready to fight on that kind of level? You are an amazing fighter. You two, you and the opponent they have for you, are better skilled than probably 65-70% of guys I've seen fight in the organizations around here. You have some incredible skills but do you honestly think that women are ready to make that step into the UFC next?

Shelby: Yes I do. Women have been around in this sport for longer than people think. Just because it's events they've never heard of, people don't hear about it too often. Women's fights are very, very popular in Japan and women's boxing is getting huge in the United States. Myself and Erica Montoya have already fought in Japan. We've already been marketed over there. I've fought for a world boxing title. The Featherweight world boxing title. I lost. That's another show. We've both been marketed over there. I think it's a great fight to put together. I think it'll sell the seats and I think it will sell pay-per-views too.

MMAWeekly: Shelby, it's an interesting point that you mention. You've been in Japan. You've seen the people embrace it. How do you feel people will be in the States? You know how it is. We've been to enough UFC's, especially, you know, back East when it goes to the ground you hear people booing and things of that nature. Of coarse you won't face that in Japan but once it's shown in America, how do you think women will be perceived in Ultimate Fighting?

Shelby: I think that it also depends on how this fight comes off in Japan. I don't think that they should have this fight in Atlantic City in the next UFC. I think the waters need to be tested a little bit of coarse. I think once people see the skills that Erica and I have, you have to be very careful which girls they back up. I think that the main purpose is that on paper, the striker verses the ground fighter. It's a great match up. I don't think there's any way to go wrong with this fight.

MMAWeekly: It should be very interesting. I know the fans are looking forward to it. Let me ask you. As far as when you tell people, I mean people off the street. They ask you, "Hey, what do you do," and you tell them you're a professional fighter, what do they say to you?

Shelby: Well, I usually try to let that be the one of the last things that comes out of my mouth because I don't want to be perceived as, a lot of people don't understand it. Usually I say I'm a professional boxer and then if they press me more, usually I'll come out and say that I'm a Mixed Martial Arts fighter. Usually tell them I'm an Ultimate Fighter because that's what people understand. I get different reactions from different people. Usually it's disbelief and then once they start talking about it, they are full of questions. They can't stop asking them. They're really interested in it. I've gotten good response from people. You know, shock and disbelief but I think that that's good.

MMAWeekly: Shelby, here's the interesting question. I think with women fighting, I think with average fan, It's going to be interesting to see if they take this seriously. Just because. I don't mind saying this, most men fight fans are pigs. They like certain things about it. They root for the ring girls. People say, bottomline, women should be in the cage as a ring card girl, not fighters, blah blah blah. They'll comment, "will Shelby fight in a thong?" Some of these guys have one thing on their mind.

Shelby: Every village has an idiot. There's going to be people like that out there but for every one person like that, there's going to be the people that respect me as an athlete. You take the bad with the good and just keep pressing on.

MMAWeekly: I'm a big women's sports fan. I like women's sports within itself. I'm a big softball fan, a big volleyball fan. When I was in college, I loved women's sports. I'm also a big proponent for Title 9. Do you think that with the addition of women into fighting that it will become another hot topic for politicians and media and what have you that it's not a legitimate sport because now you have women fighting in it? It's still just a fantasy, like a, lack of a better term, a WWE style event where you have two rather attractive women that understand how to fight. Do you think that this is going to be the type of event that's going to bring us more heat than it will bring us notoriety?

Shelby: I hope not. Of coarse I'm hoping for the better of the two. That's why I think Japan's the perfect place for this fight to take place. It's a great place to test the waters. This fight definitely has to happen. This fight is a great fight. It has to happen and Erica Montoya works for the UFC. She does the Spanish commentating. I have made a lot of friends in the UFC. I just don't think you can go wrong with this fight in Japan. I think maybe we could get some negative feedback if we tried it out first in the United States but that's not what we're shooting for.

MMAWeekly: Shelby, you mention your opponent, Erica Montoya. If this fight happens, it's going to be a great fight. You mentioned the contrast of styles. Tell me about this fight. What do you expect? What do you think is going to happen?

Shelby: I think with her teammates that her stand up has gotten a lot better. That's great. If Erica wants to stand up and bang with me, that would be great. That would make for an exciting twenty seconds or however long it lasts. My thoughts are, she's going to try to shoot right in so I'm going to be doing a lot of, showing my new wrestling skills and maybe even some of my new Jiu-Jitsu skills at American Top Team. The amount of talent at my new academy is so unreal. I'm blessed to even, I'm the first girl that's ever been on American Top Team and I feel really blessed. I've been given a lot of, I don't know, I just feel really lucky.

MMAWeekly: How long have you been with American Top Team?

Shelby: I've been here three months.

MMAWeekly: That's got to be amazing to work out with the guys that are there. What have they shown you that maybe you didn't know before you got there?

Shelby: So much. So much. I mean, you think you know everything and then you realize you really don't know shit. I'm learning more of the stuff that, these guys are unbelievable. We've got twenty three black belts. You're on the mat training with one and then when you get done, you train with the next one. It's unbelievable. I can't even put it to words. I don't even know what to say.

MMAWeekly: Shelby, do you feel this fight will be signed very soon? What's the latest with regards to this up coming fight?

Shelby: It's still just being talked about. I really have a good feeling about it. That's all I can say. I really don't want to say too much because I don't want to scare Dana off.

MMAWeekly: [laughs] I understand. I know it's been talked about but nothings been signed. Shelby first of all, I want to say thanks. It's good to finally get a chance to talk with you. We'd love to see history. I hope this all comes off and I hope it all works out for you.

Shelby: Thank you very much.

For Ortiz (11-4-0 in mixed martial arts) from Huntington Beach, Calif., the former UFC light heavyweight champion, and Mezger (44-13-6) from Dallas, TX, their main event battle will be the continuation of a war that began May 30, 1997, at UFC 13: The Ultimate Force, resumed March 5, 1999, at UFC 19: Young Guns and eventually led to one of the biggest fights in UFC history, Ortiz’ match up with Mezger’s mentor Ken Shamrock November 22, 2002, at UFC 40: Vendetta.

Both own a victory. Mezger in the first fight by guillotine choke amid wild controversy when Ortiz thought Mezger had tapped out, and Ortiz by massive punches in a revenge-filled re-match that included post-fight antics and a T-shirt message that had Shamrock attempting to jump over the Octagon to get at Ortiz while vowing “I’ll never retire from the UFC until I fight him.”

That became reality in the main event of UFC 40 when Ortiz, then the UFC light heavyweight champion, was victorious by technical knockout after three rounds. Now, the stage is set to settle the score with Mezger. And yes, Shamrock will be in his corner again. Ortiz needs a victory to get back in the light heavyweight title chase and Mezger would definitely improve his rank in the division with a win.

“Tito is a tremendous athlete with more experience now. He will be favored. But, I am a warrior and have beaten many favored fighters in the past because I always figure out a way to win. I really expect this to be the UFC’s best fight of the year,” Mezger said.

Ortiz advises that Mezger had better be in shape. “This fight will not go the distance. It’s going to be punishment and I plan to stop him once and for all,” he said.

The battle lines are clearly drawn for the Hughes-St. Pierre welterweight title fight. Hughes (37-4-0) from Hillsboro, Ill., was the UFC welterweight champion until he tried a reversal move in the first round at UFC 46: Super Natural and was caught in a rear naked choke by BJ Penn. He lost his belt, but rebounded with a dominating three-round unanimous decision over Renato Verissimo at UFC 48: Pay Back!

Hughes is one of the strongest pound-for-pound fighters in MMA who is renown for his wrestling skills and ability to slam opponents and deal out brutal damage on the ground. He is driven to re-gain the title and prove he is one of the best welterweights in the world. But St. Pierre (7-0-0) from Montreal, Canada, is the undefeated Canadian welterweight champion who is equally dangerous standing or on the ground. He impressed everyone in his debut at UFC 46 with a unanimous decision over judo expert Karo Parisyan followed by a first-round knockout of Jay Hieron at UFC 48.

Hughes knows that St. Pierre is talented. “But, it’s too soon for him to be taking me on,” he said.

“He doesn’t know what’s coming. This is my time,” St. Pierre counters.

Three middleweight matches, a welterweight bout, a light heavyweight match and a heavyweight fight will complete the card.

With two of the UFC’s most talented young fighters moving to middleweight, the division now rivals the light heavyweights for competitive action.

“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (8-2-0) from Davenport, Iowa, who introduced his explosive knockout power as a welterweight, moves up to face veteran Evan Tanner (31-4-0) from Gresham, Ore. Lawler quickly established a reputation as one of MMA’s most dangerous strikers with impressive wins over Aaron Riley, Steve Berger, Tiki and Chris Lytle, the last three by KO. Just 22, Lawler is still developing and now makes his debut as a middleweight. Tanner, a member of UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Randy Couture’s Team Quest Fight Club, reeled off six victories as a light heavyweight before he dropped down to middleweight and continued his win streak with two consecutive victories over highly regarded Phil Baroni. Tanner makes no bones about the fact he wants to be the UFC’s next middleweight champion.

Another middleweight newcomer will be powerful Rich Franklin (17-1-0) from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is moving down from light heavyweight to face one of the UFC’s best all-around fighters, Jorge Rivera (9-2-0) from Milford, Mass. Franklin, an outstanding striker with excellent submission skills, won his last two UFC fights by TKO in the first round as a light heavyweight. He pummeled Tanner at UFC 42: Sudden Impact in Miami, Fla., and then defeated Edwin DeWees in just 3:35 at UFC 44: Undisputed in Las Vegas. He will be formidable as a middleweight. But Rivera is a hardnosed striker who likes to move forward and keep the pressure on opponents. While striking is his strength, he has all the tools to become a top middleweight contender. Rivera made an impressive debut at UFC 44 with a unanimous decision win over tough Canadian David Loiseau.

The card’s third middleweight match will pit grappler Trevor Prangley (8-1-0) from Couer D’Alene, Idaho, against Ivan Salaverry (8-3-1) from Seattle, Wash. Prangley, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, is a world-class grappler, but is not afraid to stand and strike with opponents. In his last UFC appearance, he defeated Curtis Stout at UFC 48: Payback! with a neck crank at the 3:51 mark of round two. Salaverry is strong on the ground or standing up. He defeated Andrei Semenov by TKO at UFC 37: High Impact.

The welterweight bout will have an East Coast flavor because Frank Trigg (11-2-0) grew up in Rochester, N.Y., although he now lives and fights out of El Segundo, Calif. His opponent, “CharutoVerissimo (5-1-0) is from Hilo, Hawaii. Trigg is world-class wrestler who is always in top condition and he has added striking and submission skills to complement that wrestling ability. In his last UFC fight, he defeated wily veteran Dennis Hallman by first-round TKO with strikes on the ground at UFC 48. Verissimo is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who made an impressive debut at UFC 46: Super Natural in January with a unanimous decision victory over former welterweight champ Carlos Newton. In his next match, he nearly submitted Hughes at UFC 48 before losing a close decision. Also of note is the fact Verissimo trained and coached Penn when he defeated Hughes for the welterweight title.

In the light heavyweight prelim match, Canadian Patrick Cote (5-0-0) from Rimouski, Quebec, will make his UFC debut against talented Marvin Eastman (7-3-0) from Las Vegas, Nev. Cote holds the TKO Canadian Light Heavyweight championship and is a power puncher who has knocked out some of Canada’s toughest fighters. His TKO belt will not be on the line in this fight. Eastman has an extensive wrestling background and is a quick striker who never backs down. In his UFC debut, he stepped up at UFC 43: Meltdown and took on former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort. Although Belfort won the fight en route to winning the title, Eastman gave him all he could handle.

No fight card is complete without a heavyweight bout and UFC 50: War Of 04 will not disappoint fans when John Marsh (12-4-0) from Redondo Beach, Calif., makes his UFC debut against veteran Tra Telligman (15-4-1) from Ft. Worth, Tex. Telligman, one of the best strikers in the heavyweight division, has fought some of the best fighters in MMA and is renown for two incredible wars with Pedro Rizzo. Telligman is not afraid to throw down with anyone and feels it is time to establish him self as one of the top UFC heavyweights. Marsh is a very aggressive heavyweight who has excellent submission and striking skills. His biggest weapon is a powerful right hand and he said although Telligman is experienced, “he will make a mistake and I will take advantage of it.”

PRIDE BUSHIDO NEWS

Sportsnavi and Kakuto.com are reporting that PRIDE has announced that the next Bushido show, slated for October 14th, will have a Japan vs. the World theme. Some names being mentioned for the event include.....

Takanori Gomi, Hayato 'Mach' Sakurai, Ryo Chonan, Sentoryu, Ikuhisa 'The Punk' Minowa, Yasuhito Namekawa, Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua, Carlos Newton and possibly a Gracie.

MMAWeekly's Scott Petersen reports that Shonie Carter is supposed to be in the mix as well as he told MMAWeekly two weeks ago that he was scheduled to be on the card.

In the Japanese press on Wednesday, DSE boss Nobuyuki Sakakibara made it a point to stress that he was ready to prepare for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Emelianenko Fedor on 12/31 for the Man Festival 2 show.

If you recall, the press for the last couple of weeks was that if Mirko Cro Cop defeated Josh Barnett on 10/31 in Saitama, that it would be Mirko who would get the shot against Fedor.

With the recent rumblings of K-1 wanting to acquire Nogueira for their New Year's Eve show, we have been told by one source that the Brazilian Top Team recently either received or signed an offer with DSE for renewal.

Obviously, a re-match between Fedor and Nogueira needs to happen, but the interesting aspect is that K-1 may have been used as a bargaining chip to ensure the Fedor/Nogueira re-match.

So what will happen for the Mirko vs. Barnett match on 10/31 in Saitama? If Mirko wins, he probably won't get a fight against Fedor until 2005. If Barnett wins, nobody knows what will happen.

David Terrell wants to honor the remainder of his Pancrase contract and with the UFC's blessing he will starting in December in Japan. MMAWeekly's Tom Call has learned who Terrell's next opponent is in Pancrase and it's not an easy one by any stretch of the imagination.

MMAWeekly has learned that Terrell will fight Keiichiro Yamamiya of Japan. Yamamiya's record is 31-18-8; including, a recent win over Team Quest's Chael Sonnen by decision back in July.

Yamamiya has fought a ton of top fighters in MMA with many notable wins including wins over Chris Lytle, Denis Kang, Nathan Marquardt. His losses include Yuki Kondo, Bas Rutten, and Eugene Jackson; not to mention, a draw with Jeremy Horn.

It should be a very interesting fight indeed. Terrell would like to fight at the beginning of the new year back in the UFC, but for now will focus on this upcoming fight for Pancrase in Japan.

VASQUEZ ON COMEBACK TRAIL
by Jeff Cain

When people talk about fighters they use terms like toughness, heart, desire and dedication. These words are thrown around like a frisbee in the park but sometimes a fighter personifies these words. Javier Vasquez is one of them.

In February of 2002, at King of the Cage 21, Javier went to battle with Alberto Crane and just moments into the bout Vasquez blew out his knee. For most that would have been it, but not Javi. He sucked it up and pressed on. He would take Crane the distance only to lose a very close, even questionable, split decision.

Athletes are able to come back and compete after tearing their ACL, especially in this day and age of modern medicine. Athletes that tear that same ACL for a second time usually call it quits. It is unheard of for an athlete to come back after tearing the same ACL three times. Nobody must have told Javier because he is doing just that, coming back after blowing out the same knee three times.

This weekend, in Canada, Vasquez will attempt to qualify for Abu Dhabi. When he fought MMA, he fought at 155 pounds but was always one of the smaller guys for that weight. He walked around and 157 when most would cut down from 170 or more. This weekend he will compete at 145. It's been a personal, lifelong goal of his to compete in Abu Dhabi. He said, "I want to prove to everyone that I'm one of the best grapplers in the world."

The qualifier is an eight man tournament so Javi will have to win three matches in the same day to advance. A fighter can advance without winning it all if his performance is impressive enough but Javier doesn't want to leave it up to the judges. He wants to win it to guarantee his spot in. He hasn't seen the brackets and doesn't know who he will be facing but knows who he'd like to face. His old rival, Alberto Crane, has entered and Vasquez feels like he and Crane are the guys to beat.

"I can't wait to get my hands on him," said Vasquez. After beating Javier back in 2002, Alberto did an interview with none other than MMAWeekly where he said some not so kind things about Javier. Still to this day, Vasquez remembers. Javier commented, "He's going to sleep." He added, "I hope he doesn't tap. I just hope he doesn't tap." As much animosity as Vasquez has toward Crane, he did say, "He's a very good grappler. He's a very good competitor, He's a good fighter.....The guy's legit."

Javier has recovered nicely from his last surgery and, for the most part, he feels pretty good. He said, "I just have to be careful. I've trained everyday. I've just got to be careful is all." Win or lose, advance or not, Javier is an inspiration. He is the personification of toughness, heart, desire and dedication.

US, the new Chute Boxe's Eldorado

Right after conquering Japan with Wanderlei Silva at Pride and release a brand new gym in Tokyo, Chute Boxe gets ready to invade another great MMA polo: United States. The commander of this new step will be Roberto Picinini, who is on his way to California. The new Chute Boxe training center will be located at the Beverly Hills Jiu-Jitsu Club. Picinini will take care of Muay Thai classes and BJJ black belt Marcus Vinícius de Lucia will handle Jiu-Jitsu's classes.

In fact, going to US is further more then a single TC. After having Wanderlei Silva and José Pelé Landy, Chute Boxe wants to come back to the Ultimate cage with a new representative. Rumors says that Murilo Ninja would switch Pride for UFC. The middleweight fighter, who fought Pride GP Heavyweight would be followed by Luiz Azeredo.

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST WRESTLER CAEL SANDERSON FINISHES SECOND IN VOTING FOR USOC MALE ATHLETE FOR AUGUST
by: Eddie Goldman/ADCC Wrestling Editor

Each month the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) conducts voting for the top men's and women's athletes of the month as well as the top team of the month. August, of course, was not a normal month for the USOC, as it was the month when the 2004 Olympic Games were held in Athens. Thus the competition for this month's awards is that much more crowded.

Cael Sanderson, who captured a gold medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. in freestyle wrestling in his first Olympic appearance, and was the only American wrestler to win a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics, has finished second in the USOC's voting for male athlete of the month, according to a USOC press release. He was only bested by star swimmer Michael Phelps, who won six gold and two bronze medals at the 2004 Olympics, becoming the first American and only person in a non-boycotted Olympic Games to win eight Olympic medals at a single Games.

Sanderson was the only wrestler or combat sports athlete to finish in the top three in the voting in any category or receive any first-place votes.

It appears that at least for now Cael Sanderson has decided to take a break from wrestling. For how long remains to be seen. But he will stay active in the sport. Expect him to participate in some capacity at the taping of the first season's matches for Real Pro Wrestling in October.

Here is the section of the press release on Cael Sanderson, as well as the voting in the men's athlete category:

Taking second place on the men's ballot was Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa). Sanderson claimed a gold medal at 84 kg./185 lbs. in men's freestyle wresting at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece., Aug. 27-28. He was the only U.S. gold medalist in wrestling, and one of six Americans to win a medal in Athens. Sanderson won five matches on the way to the title, and he defeated 2000 Olympic silver medalist (76kg) Moon Eui Jae of Korea in the gold-medal finals, 3-1. Sanderson scored two takedowns in the second period to put the match away and bring home a gold medal for the United States. His semifinal victory was a thrilling 3-2 decision over 1999 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist (85kg) Yoel Romero of Cuba. Sanderson scored two second-period takedowns for the margin of victory. He had lost his previous two meetings with Romero prior to the Olympic showdown. In an exciting quarterfinal match, Sanderson stopped 2002 World bronze medalist Majid Khodaei of Iran, 6-5. Sanderson fell behind and battled back with some outstanding wrestling late in the match. He also captured two matches in his pool competition, beating Magomed Kurguliev of Kazakhstan, 4-2, and Siarhei Borchanka of Belarus, 9-1.

Results (first place votes in parentheses)

MEN
1. Michael Phelps 76 (24)
2. Cael Sanderson 28 (1)
3. Jeremy Wariner 23 (0)
Also receiving first place votes: Matt Emmons

PENN TALKS UFC LAWSUIT, PULVER AND FUTURE

BJ Penn was the featured guest on MMAWeekly SoundOff Radio Friday. For those of you who missed the show, you owe it to yourself as an MMA fan to go to the archive and listen to it.

Penn spoke about his lawsuit with the UFC over being stripped of his Welterweight title, what his future plans are and who he wants to fight.

BJ won the UFC Welterweight title at UFC 46 by submitting Matt Hughes in the first round. Following the fight, Penn decided to accept an offer by K-1 to fight Duane "Bang" Ludwig.

Dana White said on MMAWeekly Radio before hand that if BJ fought for K-1, he would be stripped of his UFC title. Dana held true to his word and Penn was stripped. BJ maintains that he didn't break any contract with the UFC by fighting in K-1 and feels that he was "illegally stripped." Now both parties will settle the dispute in court.

At UFC 50, Zuffa plans on putting the Welterweight title on the line when Matt Hughes takes on George St.Pierre. Penn has sought to get an injunction to prevent that from happening. Whether or not the injunction will be enforced will be known before the bout between Hughes and St.Pierre takes place. BJ expects to find out by the end of this month. Penn said, he'll "just wait and see what happens."

Looking back on the situation, BJ said it was a "clash of personalities" and, "a miscommunication." Penn wanted to do one thing and Dana White wanted him to do another was the gist of it. Even with the impending lawsuit, BJ still wants to fight in the UFC.

He said he always had a good time fighting for them and was, "well taken care of." Penn said he wants to be a fighter that fights the best fighters in the best organizations. "I want to fight in every organization," stated BJ. Every organization worth fighting in that is, with the UFC being one of them.

Penn's future is kinda up in the air right now. He is scheduled to be on K-1's New Year's Eve card but doesn't know against who. He did say that it won't be against Genki Sudo however.

There is one fight out there that BJ really wants. He wants to fight Jens Pulver. Jens beat Penn for the UFC Lightweight title at UFC 35 and BJ would love to avenge that majority decision loss; the only loss on his impressive professional record. "Any professional athlete would want to get a chance to get back in the ring with someone thats beat them before," stated BJ.

BJ commented that Jens said he would fight BJ anytime, anywhere and would do it at 170 pounds. Penn went on to say that Pulver says he wants to fight but hasn't made any attempt to actually put the fight together. BJ feels now is the time to do just that.

BJ doesn't feel as if Jens is avoiding a fight with him. He just thinks that he may not be number one on Jens' list to fight right now but Jens sure seems to be number one on BJ's list. Penn is walking around at about 175 right now and said he would drop some weight to fight Pulver.

Although Jens said he would fight BJ at 170, BJ said he would take a fight with Jens at 155. He just needs time to drop the weight properly. More than likely, if this fight ever comes off, it will take place at a negotiated weight much like the Penn and Ludwig fight did in K-1. Like said before, if you missed Fridays radio show, do yourself a favor and listen to it in the archive.

PULVER CALLS IN RADIO SHOW TALKING PENN

Immediately after BJ Penn's appearance on MMAWeekly SoundOff Radio Friday, Jens "Little Evil" Pulver called up to respond to Penn's comments about fighting him. In the impromptu interview, Jens gave his word the he'd give Penn a rematch after the first of the year.

Jens said he is contractually obligated to fight up through December. "I had to do what I had to do to fight, to make a living," said Pulver. He said he isn't "ducking" anyone and that he and Penn can line something up after he has fulfilled his three fight obligation. Right now Jens is on a mission that doesn't include BJ Penn.

Pulver wants to be the first fighter to win major titles in both the U.S. and Japan. He has got himself in a position to do just that in Shooto. Jens commented, "I'm on a race with Randy Couture right now. Someone's got to be the first ever to win a big title in the U.S. and a big title in Japan." Jens wants Nogueira's Shooto title but said the minute he gets past Nogueira, a rematch with Penn can happen.

Jens said he would fight BJ at 170 pounds and that he is a man of his word and will do that if need be. He will need time to put on the weight and stated that the two can meet somewhere in the middle, like at 160 where he has to gain weight and BJ has to cut some. Pulver stated that he doesn't care about the weight and that is something for the managers and promoters to work out.

Jens said, "I can't ask for rematches if I'm not willing to give rematches." He went on to say that if anyone deserves a rematch, it's BJ Penn. He went so far as to say, "I won't set anything up after December until he and I set something up." It looks like we will get to see a rematch between the two sometime early next year.

Blind (Up)Date:
Flirtatious Fighters Nab Coveted November Sweeps Week

By Loretta Hunt

Is M-M-A fast becoming America's latest F-A-D? It would appear so with all the added attention the fledging sport has been getting via the small screen.

In recent months, mixed martial arts hopeful Josh Hayes was featured on the hit MTV series "True Life" training and then competing in his first pro fight in the WEC. On a separate episode, cameras followed Muay Thai and part-time MMA fighter Kit Cope to Thailand for his "true life" experience. Let's not forget "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFC's reality show set to premiere this January on Spike TV.

Next on that growing list, reality dating show "Blind Date" has also jumped onboard for some MMA-centric programming. The long running series, which pairs strangers together through a host of engaging activities in the hopes of catching a love connection (or repulsion) on air, shot five separate episodes with Ultimate Fighters Tim Sylvia, Wes Sims, Josh Thomson, Pete Spratt, and Tiki Ghosn last July in Las Vegas.

Apparently, higher-ups have been so pleased with the episodes as they've been edited that "Blind Date" executive producers, in correlation with NBC/Universal officials, have decided to air them during TV's coveted "sweeps week," set for November 15th through 19th.

"The UFC is obviously very hot these days, so we're taking advantage of that through sweeps week," says "Date" producer John Pepper. "We definitely save the best for that slot. That's when the most viewers, the most eyes will be looking at Blind Date, so we wanted to save our absolute best for it."

"Date" reps were especially impressed with heavyweight Wes Sims' encounter with his date, described as a young woman who was quite nonplussed by the 6'8" giant's antics and chosen profession. It's reported that Sims' time went so rocky, that the outgoing fighter ended up at a Vegas strip joint by night's end, his defiant date in tow.

Blind Date has enlisted "specialty" contestants before for themed weeks, from Tropicana showgirls to WWE characters. This will be their first collaboration with UFC fighters.

WILL SILVA FINALLY GET THE CALL TO AMERICA

The UFC has made it clear that they want to create a championship belt very quickly in the 185 division and now it looks as though if they want to get the top fighter in the world, his name could be Anderson Silva.

Silva followed up his win over Jeremy Horn with another impressive win this weekend beating UFC veteran Lee Murray in the UK this weekend in the Cage Rage promotion. Silva knocked down Murray in the first and third rounds and was impressive in the win.

Now it seems as though the UFC could bring an exciting explosive fighter in Silva who is a free agent as of now. Here are the results from this weekend's event which also saw UFC Veterans all have success in Mark Weir, James Zikic and Leigh Remeidos.

Denis Kang Wins Spirit MC Grand Prix Tournament

Seoul, Korea -- In what can be described as nothing less than a life defining moment, Denis Kang has successfully completed his ambitious campaign to become the #1 ranked Mixed Martial Artist in the country of his origin. Returning to Korea for the fifth time this year, Kang stepped up to compete in the prestigious Spirit MC Grand Prix against a deep field of both Korean and Japanese talent.

Round 1 saw Kang facing a very skilled and dangerous opponent in the Japanese striker, Hamada Junpei. Kang was quick to launch a devastating series of strikes that bloodied and stunned the clearly overwhelmed Japanese opponent. Once on the ground Kang positioned himself in a side control position where he quickly disposed of his opponent with a key lock submission.

Round 2 would be a match up against Team Tackle Heavy weight, Kim Jae Young. Young, attempting to stand and trade, was able to exchange a few combinations but was taken out of his game plan by a massive kick from Kang that opened up the Korean to be taken to the mats. Immediately taking Young’s back, Kang delivered further punishment and secured a rear naked choke submission.

Round 3 would prove to be the most exciting and technical matches of the evening as Kang faced the Korean Neo-Fight champion, Yang Jin Ho. Delivering heavy strikes and working inside of the clinch, Kang bombed his opponent with a barrage of both knees and elbows. After inflicting an incredible amount of punishment on his opponent, Kang knocked out Ho with a massive knee to the head.

Through securing this victory, Kang has established himself as the leading Korean Mixed Martial Artist of his generation. Surrounded by his coach, Marcus Soares and his team mate, Garett Davis, Kang received the Spirit MC belt and was crowned the King of Korea’s premiere Mixed Martial Arts organization. Along with his national sporting distinction and exploding widespread stardom, Kang is currently receiving numerous endorsement and entertainment offers as well as engaging in initial conversations with several leading Japanese fight organizations. The future is wide open for this incredible young athlete.

If you place in the top 3 of the harder level division, then you you should not fight down a skill level.

REMOVE SUBMISSIONS FOR THE BEGINNER KIDS (Ages 14 & Under):
The NAGA and the sport of submission grappling are growing at a phenomenal rate. We want to attract as many new grapplers to the sport and our competitions as possible, especially the children. Wanderlei Silva: 'Quinton Jackson is a flabby ass!'

After knocking out Yuki Kondo and stopping in the USA to watch UFC 49, Wanderlei Silva is back in Brazil. For more on his next challenge, his enemies and much more, read ahead.

If I´m not wrong, you seemed more calm than usual when you replied to the challenge made by Randy Couture at UFC? Actually, he is very smart, he is a polite guy, so when he saw me, and we made eye contact, he gave me his hand smilling. I took it and greeted him. But that is not the type of challenge I like, I appreciate intimidation!

Talk about your fight against Yuki Kondo. I played my game in that fight, because I wanted to play standing. In the beginning, I was studying him, I was wondering what would happen. He was able to hit me with some blows during the fight, a strike and a jab. I hit him with a right cross. By the time of the
stomps, the referee had come to stop the fight.

Did you get surprised when he accepted to exchange punches with you? Actually he´s a tough man, very courageous, brave, and he´s a skillful guy, with many matches. So I think he was brave, he didn´t try to hold me or anything, he agreed to fighting standing, he has his own merits.

And how about your next fight which will be against Quinton Jackson... Well, he´s a flabby ass. I´ve been getting prepared to face the way he fights, I know he will play a very tight game with me, he will give his best. I´ve been getting prepared for his game and he will get surprised with me. Surprises are coming, and if he misses out I will submit him.

After defeating Kondo at Pride you went to the USA. How was your trip there? I was there to watch the Ultimate and I was really surprised, because since 1999 I hadn´t been to the USA, so I didn´t know people would recognize me there. I was glad that I have as many fans there as I have in Brazil! Everywhere there were people that recognized me, came to talk to me, they knew about the fight game. And at the tournament was real fun since people were coming over to me more than the American fighters. I got really happy with the reception from my fans in United States.

What did you think about the fight between Couture and Vitor Belfort? Actually, Couture did his game which is the only one he knows how to do. And Belfort, tried to defend himself in the first, in the second and third he gave up, his spirit left. Some guys were teasing me saying “Damn, Wanderlei was saying he was going to yellow”, and he did it, he didn´t do anything, he was there grabbing the entire fight and after that he came to say he had gotten a headbutt. I, particularly, didn´t see any headbutt, that´s a weak excuse.

And what did you think about the result of the fight between Minotauro and Fedor? That fight had lots of nuances. The Russian seemed like a madman, he was rolling his head the whole time. The headbutt occurred, I saw that, but I don´t agree with the NO CONTEST stuff. He was winning that fight, but he was the one who couldn´t keep going, so they should have given the victory to Minotauro.

By the end of the year, could we watch you facing Cro Cop again? I´m crazy as hell to face that guy. This time there won´t be any special rules, and I will drive him crazy. I´ve been focusing on an intensive preparation to face Quinton Jackson and at the end of the year anyone can come, I don´t even want to know who it is.

How are plans for Chute Boxe for the end of the year? I think Shogun and Daniel Acácio may be fighting in Pride Bushido, for October. We´re looking to introduce one of them to the Ultimate since Dana White came to talk to me and asked us to put an athlete of ours there. Maybe we may put more than one, perhaps, Luiz Azeredo, we want to put our athletes in the main events worldwide. I hope these new guys will bring belts for our academy.

Carlos Gracie Jr exclusive UK interview!

By Carl Fisher 10 February 2004

In all the years on the reporting front, I’ve carried around a top ten list of people in the grappling world that I have wanted to interview; I’ve been fortunate enough to tick a large number of people off my list (most notably at the ADCC 2001 championships) yet BJJ has always been my main passion and being a Gracie Barra student, the most sought after interview would have to be with Carlos Gracie Jr.

Unable to conveniently hop on a plane to Brazil to achieve this dream, I placed the number one name on the back burner, striking it off as a pipe dream……until now. As growing testament to the rise of Gracie Jiu Jitsu in the UK, Carlos took time out of his busy schedule and dropped in to London after the highly successful European BJJ tournament in Lisbon, the previous week.

The overall head of Gracie Barra held a one off seminar on Saturday 6th February and I can now cross that number one name off my list as I present to you, Fighting Photographer’s first 2004 interview - Carlos Gracie Jr.

Carlos, are you looking forward to the seminar today?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Of course Carl, yes I am.

How long are you in England for?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Just for the weekend to do the seminar as Roger invited me over to open his new school and he called me and said you have to see the new place and meet all the Gracie Barra students.

Is this your first time in the UK?

Carlos Gracie Jr : It is yes

Will you be coming here again?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Sure; my plan is to arrange a tournament in Europe every year and it will make me come back here and spend more time in the UK, as I spent a lot of time in Portugal just now. I have some business to sort out in Brazil, but next time I hope to be here again this year.

How long did you stay in Portugal?

Carlos Gracie Jr : I stayed about twenty days and we organised the tournament together with the guys from the Portugal academy; there were many countries competing over the weekend. I organised the event and directed the people on how to organise the event, I didn’t referee any matches.

What did you think about the competition?

Carlos Gracie Jr : It was very nice, it went well, it wasn’t so big with number of participants but it was the first event of it’s kind in Europe, but it will grow little by little. It was clean and fast and I think the people enjoyed the event.

Do you plan to open more academies in Europe?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Yes I do, I’m looking to organise a Gracie Barra organisation and it’s now time to invest in Europe and organise as many as possible.

Mauricao has been working hard here in the UK, establishing Gracie Barra in the UK?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Yes, he’s a very serious guy and is working hard and I think through his hard work, this country is one of the strongest in Europe for jiu jitsu.

Are you pleased with Roger’s progress?

Carlos Gracie Jr : He trains hard and is keen and am very restrictive to give a black belt to a fighter, as I have two kinds of students, one who wants to be a fighter and the others just want to train and enjoy life, so they don’t have to be pushed too hard, they have other jobs and cannot spend as much time on the mat as they would like. The fighters can put the hours in on the mats and I push them hard and Roger trains hard and now he’s opening a school and being professional in his teaching, so this will take up a lot of his time and energy, so choices have to be made and after he’s settled things here, he can come back to Brazil and start hard training again.

Renzo was scheduled to attend the seminar today, yet he’s not here now?

Carlos Gracie Jr : That’s right he was due here, but my nephew Rodrigo is due to fight in Pride and he said it was going to be very difficult to attend here, so he said he will come next time.

Gracie Barra now has a Vale Tudo team doesn’t it?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Yes a lot of people in my school when they get the black belt, they say they want to fight vale tudo, so we now have a team that trains and I put somewhere in the academy to take care of that and now it’s growing a lot and this year the guys will fight more and they are training hard. We have some guys over from Cuba to teach the wrestling and some kickboxing trainers.

Do you still get time to go on the mats in Brazil?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Yes I try to every day or night to spar with my students and take a class, as I don’t want to lose contact with jiu jitsu and the time I feel happiest is when I am on the mats, it’s the best time for me.

Who else helps you with the CBJJ?

Carlos Gracie Jr : In the school, Marcio Feitosa is the chief instructor in the academy and for the CBJJ we have Marcelo, we call him Siriema, which is a bird with long legs (laughs), everybody knows him by this name (laughs).

The Mundials are growing each year, would you agree?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Yes the foreign participants continue to grow and I think the level is very high, there are a lot of tough guys; I see in a couple of years there will be many good foreign fighters.

How did you feel about Roger and Pe de Pano facing each other in the finals, as team mates do not usually fight each other?

Carlos Gracie Jr : Most of the time the eldest fighter have the title, as they’ve been longer in the black belt, but the television were coming to me and we need to record the finals and we want the guys to fight and they pushed me a lot, so I said OK let’s go and make a fight, we don’t care who wins we have to fight and they went and fought.

Gracie Barra has new kimonos in stock now?

Carlos Gracie Jr : We want to start a uniform and everyone use the same gi’s, so when the tournaments are on you can see who’s with Gracie Barra and on the back we’ll have the name of the teachers on the back but the man who makes the kimonos does not have the time yet to do it, he’s very busy. They will be available in the UK soon.

Where do you see Gracie Barra in five years time?

Carlos Gracie Jr : I give a lot of my time to the federation and to spread jiu jitsu around the world and Gracie Barra is growing naturally and now I want to make it work like a company and become a strong organization.

What keeps you motivated to keeping the flame alive?

Carlos Gracie Jr : I think I have a legacy of my family, my father had the first job and I was born in a place in the family that had ideas to spread jiu jitsu and I think it is very important in my life and it’s been so good in my life that I want to pass it to other people so they can enjoy it and bring people together and make their life more healthy.

Braulio Estima

Braulio Estima is a man that requires no introduction on the UK BJJ scene; having wiped out the opposition in the recent ADCC Scandinavian Qualifiers in January this year, Braulio is back in the UK teaching in Birmingham and touring the UK for master classes and seminars. I had the pleasure of hosting my first seminar with Braulio at the new Barra Manchester HQ in Bolton and after the dust had settled, I managed to grab a few words with the main man.

Carl Fisher: Your first time at GB Manchester Braulio, what are your thoughts on the club and the day?

Braulio Estima : Very impressive how soon the seminar filled up and the club is in a very good location with plenty of mat space to train on and the guys were very nice as well. The seminar went well, I showed some nice takedowns which could be used for both the whites and the blues and I showed sequenced moves so people did not become confused. I did the same in the no gi part of the class and showed a sweep from the guard and a nice defence from the sweep where you take the back and of course we all sparred.

Carl Fisher: It was also nice to see Rick Young support the event.

Braulio Estima : Oh yes, Rick is a very good friend of mine and it's always nice to see him and train with him and I am off on Tuesday to do a seminar for Rick in Edinburgh.

Carl Fisher: You're very busy this year travelling the UK doing master classes and seminars; what do you think of the standard in the UK, another year down the line?

Braulio Estima : I go to Bradford, London, Dudley, Coventry and many other places and the jiu jitsu is growing a lot. If you look back three years ago, there were not many blue belts but now we have many and I am looking forward to the SENI championships where there will be great competition and it's very important for Gracie Barra.

Carl Fisher: You had a great trip out to Sweden earlier this year and won the ADCC Qualifiers in fine style; what are your thoughts on the event?

Braulio Estima : Now I have an idea how much I need to train and what I need to train and I was very happy with my first event without the gi and my focus is now the Mundials and then I'm looking forward to competing in Finland next year for the next part of the ADCC trials.

Carl Fisher: Braulio, that's all Iove time for, we have to leave the building; thanks for the quick interview and thanks for a great seminar.

Braulio Estima : Thank you Carl, it was a pleasure for me to teach and I wish you the best of luck for the club's future.

Double impact seminar Seminar
Carlson Gracie in the UK! by Carl Fisher

BJJ continues to grow and expand in the UK and instructors in other disciplines are fast becoming aware of the effectiveness of the techniques and are adopting them into their training syllabuses. The latest instructor to do this is Wing Chun Master Samuel Kwok, who teamed up with BJJ legend Carlson Gracie to present the Ultimate Double Impact System Seminar. Held at the Y Sport Club, Manchester on Feb 21st and Crystal Palace National Sport Centre on Feb 22nd, Master Kwok introduced his students to a completely new realm of martial arts fighting, one that works in tandem with their own Wing Chun.

The seminar was packed out with over sixty students, with Master Kwok taking the first half of the seminar; Kwok demoed his unique brand of fighting on Paul Smith, head of the Scottish Wing Chun Organisation and as I was there as attendee and participant I thought I’d give it a whirl, in for a penny in for a lap sau, as they say. Using Wing Chun methodology, I was shown how to close the combat range and get into grappling range and go for the takedowns. This being my first ever time in Wing Chun, I found it hard to adjust at first and just kept shooting in for the clinch but after an hour or so I started to get the hang of things and would like to say carried myself off as a decent novice in the art.

First part over, it was time for lunch and onto the ample sized mats courtesy of the Wrestling Club over at Great Clowes Street, Salford and into the hands of Carlson Gracie. Carlson had travelled across with Phil Nearing and Dave Baura(?) and the emphasis was on Vale Tudo style attacks from the ground and the session started off with a basic guillotine defence. From here, the students went on to practice arm bars and kimuras from the guards and got to grips with rear choke attacks. Arm bar drills followed and bearing in mind this was for many their first ever exposure to BJJ, most of the students picked up the techniques pretty quickly.

As ever, the fun came to an end way too soon and the session ended with the usual Q+A’s before photographs and autographs galore. Billy Davidson and Dave Mc Keown ensured that the day went according to plan and between them all, they aim to be bringing Carlson back for more seminars in the near future.

For more info email Billy on chingmoschool@aol.com or Dave on northwestwingchunkuen@ntl.com. Special thanks to Dave Mc Keown for allowing me to use his pictures from the day, brought about by the death of my old laptop.

It been great pleasure i been asked to Interview Grandmaster Carlso Gracie (The Legend Of brazilian Juitisu).

Interviewed by Master Danny Khalid 21.02.04

On the 21 and 22 February 2004, Grand master Carlson Gracie, the "Legend of Brazilian Jujitsu", visited the UK by personal invitation from Grandmaster Samuel Kwok, for a series of groundbreaking 'Double Impact' seminars. Combining the skills of two great Masters, himself, and Grandmaster Samuel Kwok, of Yip Family Wing Chun.. I had the great honour, along with Grandmaster Kwok of spending some time with him at the lancaster hotel, and at the Manchester seminar the following day.

My initial reaction to him (Grandmaster Gracie) was "What a scary looking guy!!!". (until he smiled, that is....). He is a great big bear of a man, with an easy, approachable demeanour. Initially we discussed why he was here, and what the seminars were to be about, translated by Sifu Phil Nearing, GrandMaster Kwoks' representative in Chicago. Carlson, he said, became involved quite by accident .

(Phil Nearing) : I think before we start we should address one or two questions that people might be having in the UK, such as "Why are Wing Chun people doing a seminar with BJJ people"? "Why is this"?, and of course, there can be positive and negative aspects, so why not concentrate on the positive. A lot of ground fighters will be saying that BJJ can't be complete or it wouldn't need Wing Chun and Wing Chun people have been saying obviously GrandMaster Kwok's Wing Chun lacks groundwork capabilities. Rather than get into political things, lets just say that the seminar was the result of one or two chance encounters. A friend/colleague (Jeff Neal) used to train Wing Chun, and we had a young Judo instructor in our school about the time that the whole Vale Tudo thing came to life In the course of his training with the young Judo instructor (Leo Valdez), Jeff wanted a little more so he went out and made connections with Carlson Gracie, and brought the Carlson Gracie team to town, with some very high ranking fighters.

Eventually the result of Jeff's hard work was that the Carlson Gracie direct approach to things hit Chicago. About two and a half years ago, I hadn't spoken to Jeff in several years, but he came to my studio and we had a coffee, (a latte), and we discussed training Vale Tudo. But we encountered the same resistance and questions.

People are doing one thing or people are doing another. I think there are a lot of ways to fight, however I think that we felt it was a good idea to start using some of the very effective things in WC in the Vale Tudo arena, though obviously there are some techniques you can't use, for example eye gouges, chopping in the throat and things like that, these aren't very sociable and I'd like to think we haven't sunk to that level yet. What I think is important is things like continuation of attack (fon sau), breaking the hands free, getting into that range where you can take down, Wing Chun lives there. Also use of the different angles.

We did some preliminary work and have been training some guys for Vale Tudo who should be ready in the next 6 months. This was all done very casually in one sense and very seriously in another, for example, I've gone to the trouble of taking up JJ myself at the age of 50 (mumble) years so I can coach better. We have the privilege of working with Carlson Gracie, one of the great teachers of all time. He's also a great Vale Tudo teacher. So we arranged for him to see some Wing Chun whilst Samuel Kwok was in town.

We brought Carlson by the seminar and Grandmaster Sam Kwok did a beautiful aggressive demonstration, (as only Sam can do), and Carlson thought ....'this is marvellous, this is great stuff' and said, 'These 2 systems together, Vale Tudo..............?' Within several months we established a more aggressive program, with a very small group of people. We are dealing with 5 or 6 people here, that, you know, have good Chi Sao, good fighting skills, stand up, clinch, ground. Hard work, everybody's suffering, everybody's contributing, everybody's making commitments, you know?

A few of these guys pulled me aside and said I want to make a commitment to Vale Tudo fighting and I want to work with Jeff Neal and Carlson Gracie, that's what I want to do. Carlson showed them what to do,( train hard and prepare). It's pretty serious, and he was very impressed with Grandmaster Kwok's demonstration, and so we talked about doing a seminar in the UK, we even toyed with the idea of going to Germany with some of the guys in the association but one thing at a time. Grandmaster Sam Kwok is the guy that organised these seminars." When we got a little further into the conversation it was suggested to me that "we wait for Rufus to translate" Sifu Nearing agreed as he wanted the words to be Grandmaster Gracie's words, not a clumsy translation from his limited knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese.

We all then adjourned to the "Sultan of Lancaster" Restaurant, for a memorable nights food and conversation. The proprietor, Mr Naim (very close friend of mine), laid a banquet out for us. The surroundings, a converted chapel, were absolutely beautiful, and the conversation deep and inspiring.. The next day at the Y Club Manchester, Grandmaster Gracie and I were able to spend a little time talking again, translating through Rufus I was able to talk to him at greater depth..... I asked Carlson to tell me in his own words, now that we had a translator, what exactly was behind these seminars and how this fusion of skills had come about

(Carlson Gracie)..."nowadays all the people, they know many martial arts and enter all these competitions and if you just know one or two, you're not going to do very well. Nowadays you need to have knowledge of all martial arts or as many as possible, if you are a boxer and someone just grabs you and throws you on the floor, like a JJ man would, you are stuffed! JJ has many different parts to it and I believe some of the best fighters in the world are JJ fighters. If you just have legs you are at a disadvantage, if you just have hands you are at a disadvantage, if you mix many arts to take advantage of a certain set of rules in a certain arena then you have a greater chance of winning. You have to have an understanding of all martial arts in order to have good fighting and be successful in martial arts competitions"

(Danny Khalid)... What qualities would you look for in a personal student?

(CG)....." Primarily, obedience! If I say do something I expect them to do it, train like this, train like that, you see? And discipline, if you don't train properly, don't get proper sleep, don't eat properly, don't smoke, don't take drugs, all these things are very important. If they don't do these things, then I won't accept them as students, they have to be dilligent. They have to look after themselves and be of good character" (Dk) and loyalty....?

(CG) "great importance!!!..... it is very important, loyalty, to me, and if I see someone 'scooting' off and messing around with other people, and it's not all right with me, and they haven't asked permission, then I do not look well on it!. There's a lot of rivalry in BJJ, that's why loyalty is so important to me. I have been let down before by people betraying me and playing political games and I still feel it, it does not go away. People abuse me and betray me and I can never forgive them.... It's finished! I don't even want to talk about them!. As far as I am concerned, they are no more"

(DK) Have MMA competitions had the greater influence over BJJ, or has its developement been influenced more by practical 'street' encounters?

(CG)..."MMA and Brazilian JuJitsu are intimately linked. We basically started off in competition, it's hard really to remove one from the other because all the time its evolved in the context of MMA competition, but real life has also had a lot of influence"

(DK) what I mean is that Gracie JJ is known as a pretty 'in your face system', is this more down to the famous 'real life' encounters or from experience gained in the arena?

(CG)"it's real, yes it's real. It has worked in all the competitions in the world, the whole world can see it but, there's no doubt in my mind that it's a very functional martial art. It is not fake. It works! "

(Dk) how much has BJJ changed since it's conception, with Relio, and Maeda. Are you worried that now that it is so big it may stop being a dynamic martial art and stagnate as some other large organisations have and maybe turn into a 'belt factory'?

(CG)..."Carlson Gracie's Brazilian JuJitsu is the JuJitsu of my father, Carlos Gracie. Helio is my uncle"

(DK)... this is what you were saying yesterday? this is not just BJJ, this is Carlson Gracies JJ?

(CG)....."Brazilian JuJitsu, and this style, were created by Carlos Gracie, my father, but yes, it has changed, everything changes, that's the way of the world. For example, 20 yrs ago you would not have dreamed that you could stand in a street in Manchester, England, and place a phone call to Japan on a mobile phone, it would have been inconceivable. Change is the order of all things and Brazilian JuJitsu is no different. It has evolved a lot in the last 20 years and will continue to do so. I am not worried at all that it is changing, as far as I can see there is no problem with it being a dynamic martial art, it's getting better all the time. I'm still open to anything, so it's not so much changing as improving, and if I see something good I'll take from it, to make my JuJitsu better"

(DK)...thank you Grandmaster Gracie for your time and patience and your great honesty in answering these questions.

(CG) "It has been my pleasure, thank you very much for your interest."

....... and so ended my interview with a great, yet surprisingly down to earth man. At this point Grandmaster Gracie made his way to the matted area to begin his contribution to this 'double impact' seminar, undoubtedly one of the best, most exciting and inspiring seminars that this humble Wing Chun Sifu has ever attended.

As a footnote to this article, GrandMaster Kwok would like to express his heartfelt thanks to all who helped out on the day to make this seminar the resounding success that it was. Also Thanks go also to Manchester Olympic Wrestling Academy for the loan of their superb mats, the Y Club for the use of their excellent facilities. At the end of the day, the final judgement on whether the seminar was a success or not goes to the students of Wing Chun, Jujitsu, Capoiera, and many other martial arts who attended. Judging by the enormous smiles on every ones faces as they left, I would say it was a success. Grandmaster Carlson Gracie is looking Forward to come to uk end of the year .

WRESTLERS PATRICIA MIRANDA AND TOCCARA MONTGOMERY RING N.Y. STOCK EXCHANGE OPENING BELL; STOCKS HIGHER ALL AROUND

NEW YORK, Sept. 13 -- Two of the top women wrestlers in America and the world were given the honor Monday of ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

At precisely 9:30 AM EDT, Olympic bronze medalist and two-time world silver medalist Patricia Miranda was joined by Olympic teammate Toccara Montgomery, herself also a two-time world silver medalist, and Olympic coaches Townsend and Tricia Saunders and Terry Steiner, on a special raised platform on the floor of the NYSE, to open the trading day.

With most stock prices up Monday, perhaps the NYSE should invite more wrestlers to commence the day's trading.

Toccara Montgomery, originally from Cleveland and now studying at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky, remarked with a laugh, 'I never thought I'd be ringing the bell.' She added, 'It was really great. I enjoyed it a lot. I have a knack for pushing buttons,' laughing again.

Both Montgomery and Miranda were also honored at a breakfast before the ceremonial bell ringing sponsored by the law firm Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman & Herz. Both were also besieged by numerous fans and admirers requesting autographs.

Patricia Miranda, though, was in a rush to leave right after the festivities. She had a train to catch back to New Haven, Connecticut, where she just has begun her first year at Yale Law School. Some professor insisted that she not miss class today, so she had to race out of the NYSE to make it to the train.

Miranda is quite proud of winning her bronze medal and being one of that first group of women wrestlers who ever competed at an Olympic Games. 'It was very exciting. I feel very lucky,' she said.

With a couple of weeks' reflection after the Olympics behind her, she now can better put it all in perspective.

'Obviously not winning the gold was a little bit painful,' said Miranda. 'But when I got to be on the podium and see the American flag raised, that brought me so much happiness and thankfulness that I got to be a part of that experience. I just don't think I could ever say 'Thank you' enough to everybody that let me have the neat experience of warming up for an Olympic match, and getting to bang heads with the best in the world. I'm just really thankful for my time and place there.'

Now that she has finally begun Yale Law School, which she put off for a year to train for the Olympics, she will have to make a decision regarding her relation to the sport of wrestling.

'I think that that is undecided,' she said. 'I'm the type of person that I don't like to be half into anything. So I want to put my best foot forward in my studies.' She added that she will only come back to compete on the international scene if she can train with the commitment and dedication she knows are required of her.

'So it's sort of up in the air,' she explained. 'I'm letting myself embark on a new chapter. But it's undecided.'

Don't expect Miranda to compete at any of the upcoming fall and winter tournaments. 'I won't be competing for a while,' she stated. But she also added about her future wrestling plans, 'I'm going to let the answer come to me.'

She is well aware of the Yale wrestling club's activities. 'I've researched some of the club,' she said. 'There are other clubs in the area that I'm going to go visit.'

But she also has many other things on her mind right now besides wrestling.

'I've actually been to orientation and two days of class, and went back to be with Sara,' referring to Olympic teammate Sara McMann, who was injured in a recent tragic auto accident that killed Steve Blackford, McMann's boyfriend. 'And I'm going to be spending a lot of my upcoming months I hope with her,' said Miranda. McMann, she told us, is 'with Steve's parents and she is traveling off and on. I'm going to be there to support her.'

So it is indeed a new chapter in the life of Patricia Miranda. Whether or not she returns to active competition, she has already made her mark as one of the pioneers of women's wrestling. And for that, all supporters of wrestling should tell her a big 'Thank you' from the bottom of our hearts.

Coming up: Toccara Montgomery speaks on her Olympic experience and her future plans.

Sapp Filming Big Budget Comedy With Sandler, Rock

[September 8, 2004] In the wake of his motion picture acting debut, K-1 megastar Bob “The Beast” Sapp has jumped back in front of the cameras to film a remake of 1974 hit film The Longest Yard. The former NFL lineman turned martial arts fighter has been cast alongside a star-studded lineup that includes hit comics Adam Sandler and Chris Rock as well as award-winning actors Burt Reynolds and Gary Oldman.

”I’m getting into Hollywood more and more and it’s been great,” said the 6 foot 4 inch, 360-pound Sapp, whose role in the new production ironically sees him return to the gridiron. “The person that I’ve been hanging out with most is Burt Reynolds. We’ve hit it off altogether. He’s really given me insight into Hollywood and it’s been a lot of fun.”

Slated for release on Memorial Day of next year, the comedy focuses on a retired NFL quarterback (Sandler) who is serving time in prison. After being asked by the warden to field a team of inmates capable of challenging the facility’s prison guards in a game of football, Sandler’s character, Paul Crewe, does so and enlists the help of a former college champion and coach (Reynolds) to guide the team of inmates to victory. Sapp plays a member of Crewe’s squad and, according to the big man, a central figure in the picture. “Everyone’s jealous of the role I have,” he laughed.

In addition to the roster of Hollywood talent assembled, the film also casts former NFL greats Michael Irvin, Brian Bosworth, and Bill Romanowski; hip-hop superstar Nelly; and professional wrestling’s “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

According to Sapp, his colleagues on the set of The Longest Yard have taken notice of K-1 since he joined their company. “They never knew about K-1 until everyone started talking about me. Now, everyone knows about K-1 and they’re really getting excited about the fighters,” Sapp said. “People have been watching the fights on video while they’re in their trailers and really getting into the action.”

Recently, Sapp wrapped up his work on the set of Elektra, a spin-off of the 2003 motion picture adaptation of Marvel Comics title, Daredevil. The leading publisher of comic books has since decided to manufacture a limited, collectors’ edition of bracelets that are replicas of those worn in the film by Sapp’s character, “Stone.” The collectors’ item will be available to the public immediately following the February 2005 release of Elektra.

In addition to the pair of Hollywood silver screen acting roles that he scored this year, Sapp has starred in two Japanese films. He has also shot 10 commercials and appeared on 24 television shows in 2004. Last month, HBO’s hit documentary series, “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel,” ran a featured segment on the famed athlete.

Sapp’s last appearance in the squared circle came on June 26th when he faced 2000 World Grand Prix Finals runner-up, Ray Sefo, during a K-1 card in Japan. Although his future in the sport is up in the air, Sapp has continued to pursue his martial arts training. His trainers, former K-1 and Muay Thai champion, Maurice Smith, and Ivan Salaverry, have been overseeing the big man’s workouts while spending time with him on the set of The Longest Yard.

Historically known as one of the most popular sports of the 20th century, wrestling is set to make its professional TV debut in the beginning of the 21st century as Real Pro Wrestling showcases the

talents of the elite athletes combining Freestyle and Greco-Roman rules and techniques. Real Pro Wrestling provides wrestlers an opportunity to compete beyond collegiate and Olympic competition in a professional atmosphere comparable to leagues such as the NFL, MLB and NBA.

Founded in 2002, Real Pro Wrestling is based in Ashland City, Tenn. and is the creation of two former Northwestern collegiate wrestling teammates, Toby Willis and Matt Case, and former Olympic hopeful Kenny Johnson.

“Finally, the world’s best wrestlers can earn a living at what they do best,” said Willis, co-founder and CEO. “Wrestling fans deserve to see their heroes compete against the best in the world.”

According to the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA), more than one million wrestlers participated in collegiate and high school programs in the United States in 2003 with an additional 20 million individuals currently living in America having participated in the sport of wrestling in the past. Studies by National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) show that wrestling is the sixth highest participant sport in America despite not having a professional league or marketing efforts.

The league consists of eight teams from around the country made up of seven different weight classes ranging from 55 kg/125 lbs. to 120 kg/250 lbs. Regional teams will include the New York Outrage, California Claw, Chicago Groove, Iowa Stalkers, Oklahoma Slam, Minnesota Freeze, Pennsylvania Hammer and the Texas Shooters. Team line-ups and coaches will be announced at a later date.

Fan favorite and 2004 Olympic bronze medallist Rulon Gardner will headline the cast of Olympic wrestlers, including Dan Gable (Wrestling legend and Olympic Gold Medallist), Cael Sanderson (2004 Olympic gold medallist), Cael’s coach Bobby Douglas (Wrestling legend and Olympic coach), and Steve Abas (2004 Olympic silver medallist), as they gear up for the inaugural season of the first Olympic style wrestling league. Real Pro Wrestling, the gimmick-free, script-free Olympic style-wrestling league, will be taped in front of a live studio audience on October 8-9 at the Los Angeles Center Studios.

Matches will take place atop a specially designed elevated circular wrestling mat in a 360-degree Roman coliseum-inspired arena. A total of eight cameras will capture the action on the mat to present the live audience and television fans alike the greatest viewing experience. Live heart pounding music will increase the already intense atmosphere surrounding the event.

The one-hour weekly episodes will be comprised of two complete matches of up to 10 minutes each in length and highlights from other matches. Special segments concerning the history of the sport, little known facts and explanations of the rules will also punctuate the time between matches, as well as the biographical vignettes.

Negotiations are underway for a team of commentators that will include a major television sports personality as well as a former world champion wrestler or coach for the color commentary.

Terrell to Fight for Pancrase

Coming off of a huge win over Matt Lindland, David Terrell's next fight won't be in the UFC, but will come under the Pancrase banner. The Cesar Gracie student is scheduled to fight Pancrase's November 7th show in Tokyo. This is not a real surprise as Terrell has fought and won twice before for the Japanese promotion.

So who does Terrell fight once he's defeated the number one fighter in the 185-pound weight class? Our friend Zach Arnold at PuroresuPower.com, very accurate on all things Japan despite his jabs at our spelling skills, is speculating that Terrell could be facing either Sanae Kikuta or Yuki Kondo in the main event of the Pancrase show.

Either would be a formidable opponent. Kikuta is the number one ranked fighter in the Pancrase light heavyweight divsion and Kondo is the 3rd Light Heavyweight King of Pancrase. Kikuta is coming off of a win over UFC veteran Keith Rockel earlier this year, while Kondo is coming off of a loss to Wanderlei Silva in Pride. Kondo though had won his previous four fights in a row including wins over Kikuta, Mario Sperry and Terrell's teammate Steve Heath.

Apparently, Terrell is not in the plans for the UFC's December 12th show in Japan, but would seemingly return to the promotion early in 2005.

Abu Dhabi Canadian Pre-Trials Silver Medallist Scott Schilling

Oakville, Ontario -- The level of competition continues to rise in Canada as evident at the 2004 Toronto Showdown Grappling Open & Submission Wrestling tournament held on August 14. A qualifier for the Abu Dhabi North American Trials, the Toronto Showdown featured some of today’s best Canadian grapplers vying for their spot in the September 18 Vernon, British Columbia, tournament.

We look at Scott Schilling in final segment of a four part series. Schilling won the silver in the 76.99 KG division and received an invitation to the North American Trials. The 35-year-old started training in submission grappling in October 1995. Schilling earned his BJJ black belt from Professor Sylvio Behring on June 19. This was the first Abu Dhabi competition for 25 year martial arts veteran.

JC: When did you start training in submission grappling? SS: On October 29, 1995 (Royce and Rorion Gracie Seminar) in Richmond, Canada.

JC: Where do you train? SS: At the Schilling/Behring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

JC: Who is your instructor? SS: Presently Professor Sylvio Behring. I have trained with Royce and Rorion Gracie. Rickson and Renzo Gracie. Joao Roque and Wagnney Fabiano from Nova Uniao. There are so many others that I could not list them all, but I would like to thank all of them. At this time I continue to do my own research and teach at my academy in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

JC: Are you ranked in Gi? SS: Yes. I earned my BJJ black belt on June 19 from Professor Sylvio Behring.

JC: How did you train for the Pre-Trials? SS: Cardio: Bike, Swimming, BJJ and Wrestling. Mat Time: BJJ and Wrestling with students.

JC: How are you feeling about your performance? SS: Very Good. Fast and explosive and didn’t get tired. I am a finisher; not necessarily a points player unless necessary.

JC: What has been your most memorable career match? SS: There are so many. I would have to say my recent win over Jon Stutzman at the Grappling Classic Pro No-GI Invitational in Michigan, on January 24, 2004. I finished Stutzman with my new move I made up on the spot. The “Linger” pronounced like “Ginger.” No one has ever seen this submission before. The submission was named by my good friend Mark Bocek.

JC: What was your overall experience in BJJ? SS: Training in martial arts for over 25 years has been an amazing journey and BJJ has changed my life.

JC: Will you train differently for the Trials? SS: Yes, much harder then ever before.

JC: Is there anything you’d like to say? SS: I look forward to competing with the best the United States has to offer. Since I am a duel citizen of both Canada and the United States it should be interesting. Since I have lived in Canada for the last 10 years after moving here from New York after finding my birth parents. I feel proud to represent Canada.

Schilling is the Chief Instructor at the Schilling/Behring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Their telephone number is 905-847-2652.

Minotauro talks about Fedor´s amusement at a Japanese park

On August 15th an accidental headbutt ended the match between Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira and Fedor Emelianenko, leaving a No Contest declared by Pride promoters. In the wake, the news appears that the two fighters had completely different reactions to the episode during the Heavyweight GP final. Pissed off, the Brazilian Nogueira stayed in Japan for almost a week trying to convince the promoters he deserved to be declared the champion since he was medically cleared to fight.

Meanwhile, the Russian, with nine stiches in his forehead, went to a park and had lots of fun with some friends. Fedor´s attitude made 'Minotauro' even more angry. 'If he was able to go to the park the day after our fight, why didn´t he put a band-aid on his forehead and get back in the ring? If he is so tough...' said Minotauro.

On his official website, the Russian Fedor Emelianenko published some photos of his journey to the park. You can check it out at www.fedor.bel.ru. On the main page, there is an ironic phrase which insinuates that Nogueira couldn´t hurt Fedor. 'Nothing threatens health of the world champion …' says the website.

About the No Contest, DSE President Nobuyuki Sakakibara, considered it the correct call, however, a special rule could be adopted in the future in case this sort of a medical stoppage happens again. Minotauro and Fedor should face each other on December 31st during the Pride Special New´s Year event. To the Brazilian, there is nothing to do but train.

Wanderlei launches his own motorcycle

One month after getting a sponsorship from Yokohama, the famous japanese tire company, Pride middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva, was invited by a Honda branch in Curitiba (Cabral Motos), to put his 'WAND' logo on a limited series of cycles: Twister (CBX 250), Titan (CG 150) and Biz (C 100).

Last month, One day before leaving for Japan to face Yuki Kondo, Wanderlei filmed the advertisement that has being broadcast on Parana tv since last Saturday.

'Our idea is show that 'Wand' motorcycles have the same qualities of the champion - strength, endurance and power' stated Victor Spindola, the creator of the advertising campaign. Besides the logo on the tank, the limited series of bikes will have a special helmet, copying the famous tattoo that Silva has on his head.

'I´m very proud that important companies like Honda and Yokohama are are starting to believe in our sport. I hope this is a first step for many other fighters' a proud Wanderlei Silva told us after his return from Tokyo, where he ran over Yuki Kondo in the last Pride Final Conflict, held on August 15th.

PAIN PETERS - Catching Up With Canada's Most Controversial MMA Fighter!

Readers of ADCC News will probably remember the name 'Pain' Peters. Two years ago he was the Tank Abbott of Canada, with a mixed record but performances the fans loved and a persona that sold tickets. Back then he fought at Welterweight, like the UCC photos at
http://malarky.udel.edu/~keith/2002/pain2.htm. After a fight against Matt Hume in AFC he dropped to 155 where he last fought back in November of 2003. Now he is fighting in October. We caught up with Pain at APEX in Montreal.

KM: Your next fight? PP: October 16th. The promoter out west want to see me fight Ragin’ Cajun. I guess they think he can beat me so I’m looking forward to going out there and prove them wrong.

KM: And this will be at 155?
PP: Yeah, 155. He has a hard time making 155. Make him suffer. They are trying to get him a fight at 160 but no, 155.

KM: This is going to be your third at 155?
PP: Second.

KM: Then I did see your only one at 155.
PP: Yep. (Note: TKO November 29th, 2003. Photos at
http://malarky.udel.edu/~keith/2003/various/tko112903.htm)

KM: What have you been doing since that fight?
PP: Judo tournaments and stuff like that. I’ve done four or five judo tournaments after my last fight because I kind of got tired of ultimate fighting. I just got tired of it, I had been doing it for a while. I took some time off and did some judo tournaments and now I’m fighting in October. After I beat this guy up I’ll see how I feel and if I’m still into it I’ll do another fight and if not I’ll do judo. Whatever peaks my interest. Just go by fight. I haven’t fought in almost a year but don’t think I missed out on much. For what I’ve been offered I didn’t miss out on much in this area (Montreal). I just turned 30 which before would have freaked me out. It doesn’t freak me out now. Look at Randy (Couture). I have tons of time. My priorities just change. Probably thinking more I need a better job because it’s hard to get somewhere with ultimate fighting.

KM: Without getting too personal in public is everything going okay now?
PP: Now it is. For a while it wasn’t. When my ultimate fighting career went down hill so did the rest of my life.

KM: It seemed like cutting to 155 wasn’t just a turning point in your career but in your life.
PP: Yeah. Everything started to turn around for the better. Before that I was in a dark place for a long time with trusting the wrong people and bad decisions and the whole fucking mess of shit. I’ve been finding I like ultimate fighting a lot less because of a lot of the bullshit behind the scenes. I got a manager…my cousin is managing me and I trust him 100% and I don’t have to deal with a lot of stuff. It makes a big difference to me.

KM: You mentioned your opponent had trouble making 155. Did you have trouble making 155 yourself?
PP: No, I was highly motivated to lose the weight and started dieting before I knew I was even going to fight. I was motivated to see if I could get smaller. I’m 165 now. I’ve been eating bad the last few days. I get to 160 no problem and then just cut five pounds. For my judo competitions I compete at 161 so I’m staying pretty small.

KM: How did you do in judo?
PP: Not bad. I did good in Canada. Little tougher tournaments out in the States. Good experiences.

KM: So what do you think about your opponent in October?
PP: Not much to think about. I’m going to take him serious and train hard, I wouldn’t want to lose to him, but it’s in my favor.

KM: Have you seen any of his fights?
PP: I’ve seen a couple.

KM: How do you think you match up to him?
PP: I’m good at ground and pound and he has bad takedown defense. He’s a better standup guy but I don’t think he has much power behind his punches.

KM: Are you training any differently because of your opponent?
PP: Just training more. I used to different for all of them. I’m going to try to train the same way with my strengths and what I like to do instead of changing everything 100 degrees. I think it is better to do what I am good at and make it better.

KM: So is this a comeback or something to occupy you between judo tournaments?
PP: Honestly that is a good question. This is a fight I was offered. I’m going to train hard and give it my best.

KM: What happened to painpeters.com?
PP: It’s back up. My server went under so I found a free web and built one myself.

KM: You are also training a couple other fighters.
PP: I’m training mostly Linda (Langerak). It’s cool with a female fighter because they go a lot further. She’s doing a lot for herself, like last week she was Athlete Of the Week for some TV station. She is in the news and the paper quite a bit, really pushing herself. She’s a warrior. Really tough. Monte Cox e-mailed me and asked if she would fight Jennifer Howe on a week-and-a-half notice and she took the fight. Fought a bloody war for two rounds and just gave up. I guess her face was messed up. I wasn’t there all the way up in Alaska. I look like a horrible manager like ‘do you want to fight in Alaska against the best fighter in the world for probably not much money’ and she said ‘yeah’. She’s already training hard (for) HOOKnSHOOT now to fight Judy Neff.

KM: I heard that was her attitude, that she knew who Jennifer Howe was and who Judy Neff is and she wants to go for the throat of the division. That impressed me.
PP: What impressed me is she did that and fought hard and she is thanking me for giving her the opportunity to fight somebody like somebody like Neff. That is where he boyfriend, her trainer, is giving me shit, like ‘why are you putting her in a fight like that’? (Both laugh).

KM: All I saw was corner threw in the towel after the second round. I think I saw one other fight on the internet but don’t know anything about her. What can you tell us about her?
PP: Really tough. The thing is she is driven. She has that motivation. It is unreal how hard she trains. Even now we are training with this girl from my judo class who is also on the Canadian wrestling team and national judo team. She has to drive an hour to go to train with this girl for an hour and then drive an hour back so that is three hours out of her way. Also Linda works a full-time job. She is just driven and really training harder than I train for most of my fights. She puts everything into every fight she has. She is always in shape so when she fought Jennifer Howe luckily we had been sparring anyway but she is always in shape with her cardio. She is always ready.

KM: Didn’t you mention someone else you train that is fighting?
PP: I have this fan of mine, I get this a lot, and he wanted to fight. He trains at a local club so he started training with me. It’s not that I taught him that much. I taught him what it feels like to be in the ring and stuff like that. He was ready physically and mentally up until he got in the ring and then he just mentally wasn’t there and lost the fight by decision. He froze. Now after the fight he regrets it. The thing I learned from this is you can teach somebody how to fight but you can’t make somebody a fighter. To me that was case in point right there.

KM: Has that ever happened to you?
PP: To get scared like that? No, but I have fought a lot of fights where I’m standing there and didn’t feel like being there. Pushed into a situation I didn’t want to be in so like why am I fighting when I don’t feel like it? I finished the whole fight and probably took a beating and didn’t quit but I probably shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

KM: So what do you think the difference is between you and the fan you were just talking about?
PP: I’m a natural fighter at heart. Some guys are athletes but I’m a fighter. I’m a fighter first and now I’m learning how to do it for the sport. If it was just fighting I’d win all the time but now it’s a sport.

Unfortunately as of this writing the name of the show, location, and rest of the card Pain is on have not been verified. The HOOKnSHOOT card he refers to is November 16th in Evansville, IN. Check out painpeters.com for more info as it becomes available.

Please help the Maulinator Realize a Dream!

Onzuka.com does everything we can to help the local MMA community because when it comes down to it, we are all one big family. And family helps out family when it is possible. Lets all pitch in to help Molly realize her dream and represent Hawaii.

We are willing to start off the fund raising with a donation of $50. Is anyone out there generous enough to match our donation? Now don't be cheap, I know a lot of you guys spend $50 buying a round of drinks or on things not nearly as important as this. And for those of you that is on a tight budget, every little bit helps. 5 people giving $10, or 10 people giving $5 adds up to $50. So lets see what we can do to help in any way we can.

Chris & Mike Onzuka

Aloha,

My name is Molly Helsel. I am a 26 year-old female no-holds-barred (NHB) fighter living in Honolulu, Hawaii. I train with Jeet Kune Do Unlimited and fighting is my passion in life. Unfortunately, it has been very difficult for me to find fights here in the state of Hawaii. Fortunately, I have been given the opportunity to fight in the premier female NHB event in the world on November 6, 2004 in Evansville Indiana, under the stipulation that I pay my own travel. Being invited to be on a card like this is like going from high school football to the Superbowl for me.

I am looking for sponsors to help me pay for my travel. Benefits of sponsorship include endorsement in any magazine or DVD interviews I may have and wearing of your logo to any fights or weigh in's I attend. I will be sure to mention your name every chance I get, including when posting on the various mixed martial arts Internet forums. I want to make your sponsorship an investment rather than just a handout.

Any help you can give to reach this lifelong dream of mine will be greatly appreciated, and I will do my very best to promote your business. Please contact me at helselm001@hawaii.rr.com or jkdu@hotmail.com. Donations can be mailed to:

Mahalo in advance for any help you can provide. I promise to conduct myself with the heart, class, and character that the world has come to expect from Hawaii fighters.

Biggest PPV Draws in UFC

Check out our friends at http://www.mmacrhronicle.com.

With MMAChronicle.com's releasing of the pay per view buyrates for UFCs 43, 44, 46 and 47 based on Zuffa's pay per view revenue for each show as recorded by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, we're going to take a look at the biggest pay per view draws currently in the UFC.

Here is a list of the buyrates for each UFC show since they came back on cable starting with UFC 33 in September 2001. We don't have buyrates for every show, and please take note that any buyrates other than UFCs 43, 44, 46 and 47 are only rumored numbers, and aren't anywhere close to official. The idea with presenting these numbers, though, is to use them as a guide to help analyze who and what draws and pay per view:

CHART #1
EVENT NAME DATE HEADLINER BUYRATE
UFC 33 Sept 28 2001 Ortiz vs. Matyushenko 75,000
UFC 34 Nov 2 2001 Couture vs. Rizzo 45,000-60,000*
UFC 35 Jan 11 2001

*These pay per views were figured as doing between 45,000 and 60,000+ buys

A few notes on the above chart. UFC 37.5 isn't included on the list because it was shown on tape delay on pay per view and was set up as a TV taping for Fox Sportsnet. We don't have pay per view figures for UFC 49, but, for the sake of argument, we'll figure that the show will end up doing between 70,000 and 80,000 buys, same as UFC 46 which was also headlined by Couture vs. Belfort. Also, although UFC 43 was presented as an 'all-star' show, the clear headliner was Couture vs. Liddell for the interim 205-pound title. UFC 45's main event live was Hughes vs. Trigg, which went on last that night, but Cabbage vs. Tank was the fight that the show was built around in pay per view advertising. Same thing with UFC 41 in regards to Tank vs. Mir and with Rodriguez defending the Heavyweight title last that night against Tim Sylvia. Also, Vitor Belfort was the original opponent for Ortiz at UFC 33 and pulled out late to be replaced by Matyushenko.

The following fighters headlined more than one pay per view in the above chart (the amount of shows they headlined is in parenthesis): Tito Ortiz (4), Ken Shamrock (2), Randy Couture (7), Matt Hughes (2), Tank Abbott (2), Chuck Liddell (2), Vitor Belfort (2). If you count UFC 45 for Matt Hughes, then he's headlined three shows. If you count UFC 33 towards Belfort (even though he didn't fight, he was a late replacement), he's headlined three shows.

Eastman Back in UFC 50
By Joe Hall

Preliminary lineups for UFC 50 that floated through the MMA community had Marvin Eastman on the card against Canadian Patrick Cote. Then, suddenly, Eastman's name was replaced by Ivan Salaverry.

"The Beastman" had indeed signed to compete in UFC 50, but was pulled from the card a few days later when the UFC was unsure whether he would be able to fight. The uncertainty stemmed from Eastman's involvement in a post-fight scuffle following an Aug. 7 K-1 bout in Las Vegas.

Eastman was stopped that night in the first round by Ray Sefo, but he felt his opponent had fought dirty by hitting him while he tried to touch gloves. Shortly after the match was stopped, a melee ensued in the ring, much to the Nevada State Athletic Commission's disapproval. Unsure of whether Eastman would be suspended and unable to fight at 50, the UFC pulled him from the card.

It was then Eastman realized the seriousness of his offense and the breadth of the Nevada Commission's jurisdiction. One post-fight altercation after a kickboxing match in Vegas and you can't kickbox, box or fight MMA anywhere in the country (or beyond) that's regulated. If you're suspended, that is. Eastman wasn't.

He went before the Commission and assured them he'd walk away if he found himself in a similar situation after a fight. They fined him $500 and gave him the rest of his purse, which they had been holding. "The Commission don't play around," says Eastman. "I accepted the fine, thanked them and told them have a nice day. I don't want to see them no more because it could have been 20-30% of my purse."

Ivan Salaverry had filled Eastman's vacancy to take on Cote in the light heavyweight bout. Earlier this week, however, Phil Baroni blew out the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his knee, leaving middleweight Trevor Prangley without an opponent. Immediately after the UFC heard that Eastman wasn't suspended, he says, they called his manager to see if he wanted back in. "I was like hell yeah," says Eastman. "I told you I wasn't going to get suspended."

Salaverry then moved into Baroni's spot and will face Trevor Prangley in a middleweight bout, and Eastman is now back on the card against his original opponent, Patrick Cote.

Eastman denies reports that he had been taken off the card due to a hand injury. "It was simply because they didn't know if I was going to get suspended," he says. "My mind is 100% clear. I'll be able to fight like a monster, like I normally fight."

In the very first minute of fight, Anderson hit Murray with a hard kick to the chin that knocked him down, but the tough Brit recovered.

In the second round, the noisy cheering made Lee's confidencd grow in the fight, but the better ground game and the amazing Muay Thai skills of the brazilian, who got two more two knock downs, did not leave any doubt with the judges.

by: Luca Atalla

One of the most powerful MMA teams in the world, Brazil's Chute Boxe, is ready to dominate a new ring, in this particular case, an octagon. At the CB headquarters in Curitiba, the leader and manager, Rudimar Fedrigo told us some initial contacts have been made between Chute Boxe staff and Ultimate Fighting Championship president, Dana White.

'During Pride´s last edition, we had an opportunity to have a good conversation with Dana White and we talked about some ideas we had in common. We are ready to
be part of the UFC. We are just waiting for the official invitation. We have fighters to fight in every weight they want' says Fedrigo.

The Chute Boxe leader is anxious for a possible challenge between Randy Couture - UFC light heavyweight champion – and his pupil Wanderlei Silva, Pride middleweight champion. 'If it happens, will be awesome. The oldest MMA event against the biggest MMA event in the world.' declares Fedrigo.

Out of the ring, the Chute Boxe team is expanding all around the world. ‘We are spreading our roots in all continents. We have people in Japan, Spain, United States and Brazil right now. Look out for us’, celebrates Rudimar

KOTC to Debut Internationally in Australia

Christopher Cordeiro puts together international deal as King of the Cage heads down under.

King of the Cage is proud to announce that it has taken it's first step towards expanding world wide. King of the Cage had several options on where to launch the first international KOTC production, and set the standard of future international ventures.

Terry Trebilcock Jr. decided to support his middleweight world champion Tony 'The Gun' Bonello in his home country of Australia. Bonello, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, is an undefeated MMA fighter. With a record of 9-0, he has beaten all of his 9 opponents via knockout in the 1st round.

Australia has many talented MMA fighters without the ability to get exposure internationally. With Bonello spending 4 years breaking all the barriers internationally, he is not only the current KOTC world champion, but wants to use his political power within the KOTC to give Australian fighters the opportunity to make it to the top like he has.

"A few Australian fighters have fought overseas in shows like the UFC and Pride, but those fighters have never gotten any other Australians the opportunity to get paid well and given them a clear road to a championship fight. My priority once I won the KOTC world title was to open the doors for other Australians. Hopefully in a short amount of time several guys from Australia will be getting paid well and fighting on the big pay-per-view shows. If I can make this a reality, then I am a true champion because I used my influence to help others attain their goals," said Bonello.

The new owner/president of KOTC Australia is John Pedro. Mr Pedro will run a totally politically free event, opening the doors to all Australian fighters irrespective of club or affiliation.

"There are many matches the Australian public wants to see, but has not eventuated due to the politics. KOTC is a totally independent promotion. Our main goal is to get Tony Bonello versus Elvis Sinosic or Jeremy Horn versus Elvis Sinosic 2," Pedro said. "Both Tony and Jeremy have KOTC world titles and both are very eager and happy to put up their belts to fight him. If Elvis signs the contract to fight either guy, the true winner will be the Australian public."

We will also be doing 8 man tournaments in the heavyweight, middleweight and lightweight divisions. The winner will not only receive the biggest pay day of their careers, they will also be flown to the USA and fight on a KOTC Pay-Per-View show, all expenses paid for by KOTC Australia.

Quote of the Day

"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal;
nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude."

Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1826, Third President of the USA

Onzuka.com Remembers the fallen

On the third anniversary of September 11, 2001, Onzuka.com remembers what happened on that day and wants to remind everyone that we all need to stay strong and believe in America.

Election day is coming and it is important that we make sure that the man that we elect or re-elect to the Presidency of the greatest country in the history of mankind has the balls to stand up and kick anyone and every one's ass that messes with the United States of America or anyone of its citizens. It is our duty to amke sure that an incident like 9/11 never happens again and to do this, it is important to remember what happened and keep it fresh in our minds.

God bless the USA.

Jens Pulver is Off to Japan & AJ has a fight in XFO

Jens Pulver is on his way to Japan to fight in a Shootboxing tournament on September 16th and is trying to make a stop in Hawaii on the way back. He is trying to get on the next SUMA card.

AJ Jenkins has a fight on the XFO card, which Monte Cox and Jeff Curran are promoting. She will be fighting Alisa Cantwell (4-1 record). We wish both of them the best of luck

ENSON INOUE IN UFC51?

Enson Inoue has expressed interest in fighting at UFC51 in Japan.

His interest was shown to fans when they told him that they would love to see him fight in UFC51. At this time we are unable to confirm any official interest from ZUFFA in utilizing Inoue, but his huge popularity with the Japanese fans could be something for them to consider. The fact that Inoue has a win against the UFC's current Light Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture should give them plenty of hype to work with.

SHAMROCK VS FRYE IN JAPAN?

There are plenty of rumors circulating about when Ken Shamrock will fight. He said last week that he does want to fight in Japan. The big question is who will he be fighting against.

It appears as though there seems to be some interest in bringing back a fight between Don Frye and Ken Shamrock. MMAWeekly talked with one of Frye's old training partners who said he felt Frye would defintely come back to the fight game to face Shamrock, not to mention Frye would "enjoy fighting for the new UFC."

At this point it just seems like ideas are being thrown out there. Shamrock seems interested in fighting Don Frye, and Frye seems to enjoy the prospect of fighting Shamrock again. Either way, the UFC as of yesterday has not signed Shamrock to fight in Japan, but verbal conversations have been going on according to a few reports.

"CRAZY" BOB TALKS PRANGLEY, KYLE AND THOMSON

American Kickboxing Academy fighter turned trainer, "Crazy" Bob Cook was the featured guest on MMAWeekly SoundOff Radio on Thursday. Cook spoke about Trevor Prangley's change of opponent from Phil Baroni to Ivan Salaverry for the October 22nd, UFC 50 event. Also, discussed was Josh Thomson, Mike Kyle, and some up and comers out of AKA that Bob feels will make their mark in MMA in the near future.

As reported yesterday, Phil Baroni had to pull out of his second in a row scheduled UFC bout due to injury. His replacement has been named. Ivan Salaverry will go up against Trevor Prangley at UFC 50 in Atlantic City. Bob was questioned about the change in opponents effecting Trevor's preparation for the fight. Bob said, "I don't think it's going to change things all that much."

About Salaverry, Bob said, "Ivan's got good stand-up, good ground game. He's well rounded. He's a solid guy." They will have to watch some film on Ivan but Bob's first impression of this fight was that Ivan's more technical but Trevor's more powerful and, "They're going to have one hell of a fight."

Prangley is one of those many fighters who has to balance a family and a full time job with a fighting career. Cook commented that Trevor is extremely powerful with a lot of potential. He called Prangley a "stud." He added, Trevor's "really tough mentally. There's no quit in him."

Trevor walks around at about 200-205 and cuts down to 185 for fights. He comes from a wrestling background and is no stranger to the weight cutting game. Cook said Trevor can make weight and be back up over 200 pounds before fight time the following day. Ivan Salaverry pretty much does the same thing. Cook thinks this fight will play out both standing and on the ground.

Cook was asked about Josh Thomson's loss to Yves Edwards at UFC 49. Bob said, "Josh is a risk taker and unfortunately it caught up to him that night. If they fought another ten times, that situation would probably never come about. That's how it goes. Anytime, anything can happen."

Thomson loves to fight and is "anxious" to get back in there. Josh truly has a good time in the octagon/ring. Right now, his future is up in the air. He is just waiting to see what offers come in before any decision on his future will be made.

Mike Kyle was also a topic of discussion. Kyle lost to Justin Eilers on the same UFC 49 card that Thomson lost to Edwards. Cook said Kyle wants to fight and will be on the next WEC card. Mike is athletic and is always a threat to knock someone out. Cook said he would like to see Mike Kyle in the gym "a lot more." There is no telling how good Kyle could be if his training habits were more focused.

Cook confirmed rumors that Paul Buentello has pulled out of his fight with Tra Telligman scheduled for UFC 50. Paul has a hand injury that is going to take some time to heal but it isn't broken. It is a tough situation because Buentello has wanted to fight in the UFC for a long time now. Cook said Paul just has to get healthy and "he'll be there."

NSAC SILENCED ON UFC PPV FIGURES

Jeremy Wall of MMA Chronicle has reported the following.

"Marc Ratner of the Nevada State Athletic Commission confirmed with MMA Chronicle that the NSAC will not be able to give out any more of the pay per view revenue figures for MMA events held in the state of Nevada, which Ratner spoke directly to the Attorney-General about. The numbers are confidential. We had revealed the pay per view figures for UFCs 43, 44, 46 and 47 a few days ago, and I had sent in a fax to the NSAC for the pay per view revenue figures for UFCs 33, 34, 36, 37.5 and 40, but we won't be able to get a hold of official numbers for those shows through the NSAC."

AVN Touches Base With Team Belfort at UFC 49
By: Dan Miller

LAS VEGAS - AVN traveled with director Rick Shameless to the most recent Ultimate Fighting Championship, UFC 49: Unfinished Business, which pitted Brazilian superstar Vitor Belfort against Randy Couture in a light-heavyweight title fight at the MGM Grand.

Shameless works closely with Team Belfort, supplying gear from the fighter's clothing sponsor, RVCA. A surf-and-skate apparel company based in Costa Mesa, Calif., RVCA outfits several professional athletes, including former UFC welterweight king B.J. Penn.

We delivered the custom black robe that Belfort wore for his walk to the Octagon on the night of August 21, and also brought his fight team their limited-edition Belfort fight shirts.

Before more than 12,000 fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, reigning champ Belfort, nicknamed "The Phenom," lost his title to Couture when the referee stopped the bout in the third round due to a cut above Belfort's eye caused by a head butt. Officially, it was a TKO victory for Couture, the only two-division champion in the UFC's 11-year history.

Belfort is expected to return to action in December, facing former light-heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, from Huntington Beach, Calif., at UFC 51 in Japan. But first Ortiz will meet Guy Mezger for the third time — they are 1-1 — at UFC 50 in Atlantic City, N.J., in October. Ortiz went to the event wearing a shirt under his jacket reading, "Mezger Is My Bitch."

During the trip, we also caught part of the latest round of competition in the search for the first Palms Girl.

COFFEE GUY REPORT- MIKEY BURNETT IN UFC50

Our friend Coffee Guy has told us the following,

ZUFFA are trying to get former Lions Den fighter Mikey Burnette to fight at UFC 50 next month. They are currently in negotiations and both parties have almost reached an agreement. From what I've overheard in the office, any announcement of a fight will be made in the next 4 or 5 or days. Most of us here think that this is the "big surprise" that Big D has been referring to
