Rodrigo
Gracie
Changing Organization
When
Rodrigo Gracie announced choice by K-1 over Pride, lots of people
didn't understand the reasons of the changing. From his residence
in United States, Renzo Gracie's cousin conceded an exclusive
interview to team TATAME, where he talks about his leaving from
Pride. He also comments about his future in Japan, his training
in US and what did Renzo said when he first knew about him and
K-1.
In
the end of 2003 you switched Pride by K-1. What did happen?
I
was having problems with my manager in Japan and decided to move
on. Now I hired Mike Kogan, from K-1. Over there I do have a
better life and they will pay me better also.
Why
haven't you fight from the new organization?
It
seems like K-1 Romanex ended. So they will do another event,
but is kind of a secret. K-1 would getting together with another
group and I am sure in early November it must happen something
good. On the last one, when Royler fought Genki Sudo, they also
called me, but it was kind of late..., two weeks before the show.
By that time I was handling a new academy and I was not ready.
I I decided to not do the fight.
How
long have you been living in Unites States? How is your preparation?
I
live here since 1991 and I train at my gym, in Limbrook, with
my students. I practice Muay Thai in Brooklin and train Boxing
and also do physical preparation in New Jersey. Three times a
week I go to Manhattan to train my cousin Renzo.
When
you switched Pride by K-1, people were saying you hid the information
from Renzo...
When
I first thought about moving, the very first thing I did was
inform Renzo. Then I looked after Royce, who also is my cousin.
He helped me to close a new deal with K-1. I've never cheated
anyone. The only one that didn't understand was the Pride Japanese,
because they don't know about my situation with my ex manager.
How
things are between you and Pride?
No
way! I want to make it clear I've never had problems with Pride.
My problem was my manager. Pride always treated good.

ANOTHER
EXECUTION:
HOPKINS KO'S DE LA HOYA IN NINTH ROUND
Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins solidified his hold on the
distinction of being the best boxer, pound-for-pound, on the
planet, by becoming the first man to knock out the 'Golden Boy,'
Oscar De La Hoya, with a blistering left hook to the body followed
by a left hook to the head, at 1:38 of the ninth round in their
fight Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With his
stunning knockout victory, the Philadelphia-based-Hopkins not
only retains his WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight crowns, but also
adds the WBO title to that list, also becoming the first fighter
to hold titles from all four of these sanctioning bodies.
Hopkins,
39, is now 45-2-1 with 32 KOs, while De La Hoya, 31, falls to
37-4 with 29 KOs.
The
first eight rounds of this fight were, frankly, not the stuff
legends are made of. De La Hoya stood his ground early, seemingly
winning several of the opening rounds, as the taller and stronger
Hopkins struggled to adjust to De La Hoya's unexpected strategy
of standing in front of him. But after a few rounds of little
action, a cautious Hopkins slowly but surely adapted to De La
Hoya's tactics and began landing regularly both with right hand
leads and left jabs.
Even
though Hopkins seemed to have the momentum on his side, at the
end of eight rounds it was still a relatively close fight, at
least on the official judges' scorecards. Two of the judges had
Hopkins ahead by lopsided scores of 79-73 and 78-74, but the
third judge had De La Hoya leading, 77-75.
All
that became academic in the ninth round. Hopkins began relentlessly
to press De La Hoya, and then closed the show, seemingly out
of nowhere, with his vicious body shot and, as a sort of insurance
shot, his left hook to De La Hoya's head. The 'Golden Boy,' whose
three previous losses were close decisions, twice to 'Sugar'
Shane Mosley and once to Felix 'Tito' Trinidad, crumpled to the
canvas and could not arise from his hands and knees as referee
Kenny Bayless counted to ten for the knockout.
History
will record this as the first time De la Hoya has ever been stopped.
This was only his second fight at middleweight, after having
won belts at 130, 135, 140, 147, 154, and in June at 160. Hopkins
has fought virtually his entire career at middleweight.
For
those who missed this pay-per-view broadcast, in the U.S. this
fight will be replayed next Saturday night, Sept. 25, on HBO,
before the light heavyweight fight between Roy Jones Jr. and
Glen Johnson. After Saturday night's fight, Hopkins once again
said that he would like to fight Jones, who was the last fighter
to beat him, back in 1993.

Super
Brawl 37 Announced!

Mayhem and the "The Machine Gun"!
Super
Brawl will see a change of venue and a stellar main event Saturday
night October 16th. The first annual Super Brawl "West Side
Pa'ina" will be held outdoors at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure
Park in Kapolei, Oahu. Atlanta's Jason "Mayhem" Miller
will challenge Hawaii's own Ronald "The Machine Gun"
Jhun in the Main Event. Super Brawl Promoter T. Jay Thompson
will be putting the 170lb Title Belt on the line for this exciting
bout. "We've only had two championship titles in Super Brawl's
nine year history...we reserve titles for very special occassions.
The Jhun - Miller fight is certainly deserving of this."
Jhun,
one of Super Brawl's most popular fighters, will be looking to
show the Hawaii fans once again, that he is one of the most dangerous
fighters in the sport.
With
his cocky swagger, brash self-promotion, and scrappy style, Miller
may be the most hated athlete ever to compete for the Super Brawl
fans. But Miller is more than just talk as he is undefeated in
the Super Brawl ring, with his biggest success coming against
Egan Inoue in Super Brawl 32. "After punishing Egan (Inoue),
I told the Hawaiians that I'd fight their toughest guy. Anytime.
Anywhere. I'm not sure why their sending me Jhun. They may call
him the "Machine Gun," but after October 16 all he'll
be shooting is blanks," boasted the confdent Miller of his
October 16 date with the Jhun.
Jhun
saw the Milller - Inoue fight up close as he was the event's
referee. "Yeah, I heard Miller call out any Hawaii's fighter
after Egan lost to him. He didn't have to look far 'cause I was
standing right there..."
More
details about Super Brawl 37 at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure
Park on October 16 to follow...

UFC
heavyweight champion Frank Mir was seriously injured last night
in a motorcycle accident.
While riding his motorcycle, he was hit by a car and knocked
off the bike, and flew 70 feet off his motorcycle, breaking his
femur upon landing. Probably the only thing that saved his life
was he landed on grass, and suffered no other serious injuries.
He underwent surgery to repair the large bone in his leg, which
was cracked in two, this afternoon in Las Vegas. The estimates
UFC officials have is that he will be out of action for about
one year.
No
decision has been made regarding the championship that Mir was
scheduled to defend in Japan in December against Andrei Arlovski.

ROYCE GRACIE A POSSIBILITY
FOR 2005 GRAND PRIX

To the delight of MMA fans all over the world, Pride resurrected
the Grand Prix format in 2003 and has continued it since. Last
year was the Middleweight tournament and this year the Heavyweight,
switching between the two every year.
So who will be in
the 2005 Middleweight GP tournament? No one knows of yet, but
Pride has an interest in bringing Royce Gracie back into the
mix.
MMAweekly spoke
to PRIDE officials about whether they had interest in bringing
back Royce Gracie for the 2005 GP and they said," Yes, we
do. Also, we are interested in having any big names from outside
of Pride like 2003."
So there is an interest
in Royce, who fought Sakuraba in the first Pride GP in 2000 and
lost. It would be great to see how Royce would compete with the
top fighters today in a tournament format again. But we just
have to wait and see.
"Big names
from outside of Pride" could mean many things, probably
an interest in Randy "the Natural" Couture or some
other UFC fighters, or maybe some K-1 fighters, like Mark Hunt
or Stefan Leko who have recently fought within Pride.

UFC
TO HOLD HEAVYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT

Will Tank Abbott return for the Tournament?
Coffee
Guy, our man on the inside has told us that the UFC intend to
hold a Heavyweight Tournament that will determine an Interim
Heavyweight Champion. The winner will defend the title until
Frank Mir returns to the scene, upon which a fight between the
two champions will take place. The tournament will be held over
at least two seperate UFC events. It is not known how many competitors
the tournament will include, the idea itself is all thats really
been 90% confirmed at this stage. In our opinion ZUFFA really
have an opportunity to turn this into something really big. Hopefully
it wont be some low key four man tourney, hopefully it will at
least be an eight man tournament and it will have some decent
talent amongst the competitors.

MINOTAURO
TO K-1 ?
Minotauro
not happy about Fedor retaining the title.
The
Japanese media have been reporting that Nogueira Rodrigo Minotauro
may be leaving Pride and joining the K-1 organisation. Reports
are saying that Minotauro is displeased that Pride did not award
victory to him in his fight against Fedor at the Heavyweight
Grand Prix which was stopped due to a major cut received by Fedor.
This along with poor negotiations with DSE over conditions has
lead to Minotauro looking towards K1, the reports suggest.
Officially
BTT are refusing to confirm any such rumors. They say they are
still negotiating a rematch with Fedor which will be billed by
Pride as a Super-Fight.

PULVER
FACES TOUGH COMPETITION IN SHOOTBOX TOURNEY
Jens Pulver will makes his Shootboxing debut this weekend entering
the promotions S-Cup 2004 tournament. Pulver has been testing
himself a lot as of late. He made the transition to boxing and
did very well. He hasn't lost since his return to MMA over the
past year, but now he is taking another step into the unknown
in kickboxing.
This
isn't just any kickboxing tournament, this features some of the
best. Albert Kraus, who beat both Genki Sudo by decision and
knocked out Duane Ludwig is one of the favorites.
For
those that dont know, Shootboxing has been around for many,
many years; well before the UFC in the United States or Pride
in Japan. The rules of shootboxing keep very strict limits on
any ground fighting, which basically force the fight back to
the feet for most of the bout. You can think of it as, basically,
standing mixed martial arts as there are so many limits to the
ground game, but submissions are allowed on the feet.
Pulvers
debut in the promotion is no cakewalk. His first bout is against
an unknown Chinese fighter, Dai Jyouan. But should he move on
in the tournament, the competition could get very stiff indeed.
Some of the competition includes fighters such as former K-1
Max Champion Kraus, Thai fighter Changpuek Chorsepasert, and
Danish kickboxer and Alex Gong protege Ole Laursen. Katel Kubis
is Minotauro Nogueira's Muay Thai coach, while Andy Sauwer (
94-3-0 ) is the defending Shoot Boxing S-Cup Champ. Let's just
say Pulver is a HUGE underdog, but it will be interesting to
see how he performs this weekend.
The
prize for the eight-man tournament is 5,000,000 Yen or a little
more than $45,000 U.S. Also featured on the card in a single
bout is Chute Boxe fighter Nilson de Castro.

K-1
"Best Bouts" Premieres On Pay-Per-View September 26th

K-1 will showcase a collection of the most memorable ring wars
that have occurred over the course of its 12-year existence during
a three-hour Pay-Per-View television broadcast beginning at 8
PM Eastern Standard Time (5 PM Pacific Standard Time) on Sunday,
September 26th. InDemand, DirecTV, and TVN will all carry the
special television event.
"Best
Bouts" will include contests that took place between competitors
in the sport's Superheavyweight (200 pounds and above) division
between 1993 and the first eight months of 2004. Fights featuring
legendary champions Ernesto Hoost, Peter Aerts, and Andy Hug
as well as superstars Jerome LeBanner, Ray Sefo, Remy Bonjasky,
and Alexey Ignashov will be shown. The matchups that will air
are expected to be announced over the course of the next three
weeks.
The
program is a rare opportunity for fans in The United States to
take in a series of historical bouts that were staged during
previously non-televised K-1 events overseas.
The
"Best Bouts" television broadcast will mark K-1's third
United States Pay-Per-View endeavor of this year. On December
4th, the sport will return to pay television and present the
"World Grand Prix Finals" year-end finale live from
Tokyo, Japan's Tokyo Dome.
K-1
is a martial arts fighting sport that derives its name from its
inclusion of a wide array of combat disciplines, including Karate,
Kung-Fu, and Kickboxing ("K"), and its intent to determine
one champion in one ring ("1"). After being staged
for the first time in Japan in 1993 under the direction of founder
Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, it later evolved into the country's most
popular sport and achieved popular culture status there as its
athletes turned into larger-than-life celebrities.

BTT
does not confirm K-1 dealing

The Japanese press has been talking a lot about the relationship
between K-1 and Pride heavyweight Interim champion Rodrigo Minotauro.
The idea was featuring Minotauro at December 31's event. The
end of his contract and BTT disagreement with the Pride GP decision
would be the reasons for this change, according to the Japanese
press. However, the Brazilian Top Team official position stands
that they might deal a renovation of his contract and also close
a super fight with Russian Emelianenko Fedor.
Besides
this fact, BTT admits the dealing with Dream Stage Entertainment
has not moved forward. Japanese pressures and exposed a proposal:
They might face each other on next December 31, during the Man
Festival 2. BTT and Rodrigo Minotauro are not pleased with Pride
decision to not continue the Pride GP heavyweight.

Murgel was in town to do seminars at a couple other local martial
arts schools, the highlight of his trip to Colorado had to be
the promotion of five time King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt.
Pancrase USA's newest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Marquardt
was awarded his belt following an intensive 3 hour test conducted
personally by Master Murgel. Master Murgel stated that he was

SIMS
BACK ON COURSE FOR UFC TITLE
Wes Sims, the talented heavyweight who has thrilled fans with
his exploits in the cage, chalked up yet another victory at Extreme
Challenge this week. After a freak loss at Apex:Genesis only
last week, Sims bounced back to defeat a tough 350lb monster
from the midwest. Big Wes dominated the standup and the ground
fighting and looked to be a man on a mission, a man with a title
belt in his sights. Sims was heard later to have said he wants
another shot at UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Sims was
beating Mir in their first fight but was disqualified for using
Pride rules. With impressive performances like his most recent
one, it shouldn't be long before his wish to fight in the UFC
again comes true.

NEWTON
LOOKING TO RE-ESTABLISH HIMSELF AT BUSHIDO

With Pride Bushido 5 just around the corner on October 14 the
card continues to shape up as MMA Weeklys Mick Hammond
talked with Carlos Newton who will be returning to Japan to face
U-File Camp fighter Ryo Chonan in a bout taking place near the
185 lb weight range.
When
contacted about the fight Newton said, Ive been training
hard for my October 14th fight against Chonan. I have seen his
fight against Ricardo Almeida (at Bushido 3) and it looked like
Ricardo took him down and was just holding him there, so I expect
Ryo to fight me like he did Sakurai, to stand up and keep coming
and coming.
Newton
continued the conversation by commenting on moving up in weight
to 185 lbs and how its effected his performances, Im
still getting used to the new weight. In the (Daiju) Takase fight
(at Bushido 3) I was tentative and wasnt sure if I was
going to feel alright. When I fought against Charuto Verissimo
in the UFC things were completely off as I wasnt able to
get below 170lbs for the fight and to be honest Ive never
felt that weak in a fight ever. Im back on track now and
I realize that 185lbs is the place for me and is a fresh start
for my career. Im looking forward to fighting a lot of
good fighters at 185lbs and would like to come back to the UFC
in the middleweight division and take on guys like Matt Lindland
and Phil Baroni.
The
conversation finished out with Newton continuing on the subject
of changing weight divisions, I think a lot of welterweights
are going to be moving up this next year. A lot of guys in the
division are around my age (28) and we just get bigger and grow
with age. Ive gotten larger as Ive gotten older and
am still filling out. I feel healthy and I think a lot of other
fighters once they get used to the change will find they feel
the same. Proportionately I think Im faster now than I
was compared to the welterweight division and I was a pretty
fast welterweight. Now Im just a bit bigger and am going
to completely out-speed the larger competition.

RILEY
BACK IN STATES FROM BRAZIL
by Jeff Cain
Aaron Riley has fought twenty nine professional MMA fights in
his career with a record of 21-7-1. All of those fights were
at 170 pounds. After a career of fighting at a weight that he
pretty much walked around at, Aaron has dropped down a weight
division.
Riley
recently got back to the States after fighting and winning in
Brazil in his first fight at 155 pounds. MMAWeekly spoke with
him about fighting in Brazil, his new weight, and what the future
for him may hold.
Aaron
Riley's trip to Brazil was everything he thought and was told
it would be. He had a great time and can't wait to get back there.
He fought Maycon Alarcao in Absolute Fighting Championships'
first event held in Brazil and came away with the win. Riley
said, "The show went really smoothly for the first time
there," and added that the crowd was really good. "It
was a great experience. It's kinda like the motherland, so to
speak, for MMA," stated Aaron.
Riley
trains at American Top Team and said training there is a "great
experience." They have a lot of fighters who train there
and fighters from Brazil always coming and going. This week,
Minotauro Nogueira was at their facility.
Some
fighters are affected by competing in a foreign land but Riley
isn't one of them. He said, "For me it doesn't really matter
so much. You know, a fight's a fight." He may even fight
in another AFC event in Brazil in fact. Right now though, he
is "just taking things as they come." This particular
fight took place in a ring. Riley has no preference what so ever
whether he fights in a cage or a ring.
As
previously mentioned, this was Aaron's first match at his new
weight. It isn't easy for him to make 155. He said he loves to
eat and to make that weight was, "like death." "It's
all about keeping a healthy lifestyle," he said. He doesn't
think he loses any of his power by dropping the weight and hasn't
ruled out competing in the UFC at 155 pounds. It just depends
on what comes up.
He's
had a couple of epic battles with Yves Edwards and many would
love to see another one. Aaron did more than held his own at
170 and would no doubt make an impact in the 155 pound division.
The UFC is always looking for fighters who are exciting and can
finish. Aaron Riley could be just that guy to spark some interest
in the Lightweight division.

INTERVIEW
OF THE WEEK: SHELBY WALKER
Shelby Walker could be on the verge of making history. She and
Erica Montoya could be the first two women ever to compete in
the UFC octagon at UFC 51. MMAWeekly talked with Shelby this
week about what it would be like to be the first women's fighter
in the famed Octagon.
MMAWeekly:
Shelby, how are you?
Shelby
Walker: Good, how are you?
MMAWeekly:
I'm good. Thanks. First off, got to be some exciting things,
I know nothings been signed yet, but I know there's been talk
about this first women's fight. If this does come off, what would
it be like for you to be able to fight in the octagon? The first
woman ever.
Shelby:
Of coarse, it's a dream come true. I think every girl gets into
this sport with high hopes that they get a big break and the
fact that it's just on the horizon is huge for me. I'm very excited.
I've worked very, very hard. The first ever female athletes,
you know, we just need a break. I hope something good comes out
of this. I think Japan's the perfect spot to have this fight.
MMAWeekly:
Yeah, it sounds like it. Being able to fight in Japan, it's already
well accepted. People like it. Let me ask you. I think there's
a lot of pressure on you because it is the first women's fight
but more importantly, I think other women are going to want the
opportunity to fight in the octagon and it probably puts some
pressure on you guys to be exciting just so we can see future
women's fights. Do you feel that way or how do you feel about
the situation?
Shelby:
I feel, I'm honored to be, to even be offered this fight, to
be offered the opportunity to take it. I've never been in a boring
fight. I have a very pressing, aggressive style. I don't think
it's possible for this fight to come out bad.
MMAWeekly:
Shelby, do you honestly think that right now women are ready
to make that next big jump into a huge event like the UFC and
be ready to fight on that kind of level? You are an amazing fighter.
You two, you and the opponent they have for you, are better skilled
than probably 65-70% of guys I've seen fight in the organizations
around here. You have some incredible skills but do you honestly
think that women are ready to make that step into the UFC next?
Shelby:
Yes I do. Women have been around in this sport for longer than
people think. Just because it's events they've never heard of,
people don't hear about it too often. Women's fights are very,
very popular in Japan and women's boxing is getting huge in the
United States. Myself and Erica Montoya have already fought in
Japan. We've already been marketed over there. I've fought for
a world boxing title. The Featherweight world boxing title. I
lost. That's another show. We've both been marketed over there.
I think it's a great fight to put together. I think it'll sell
the seats and I think it will sell pay-per-views too.
MMAWeekly:
Shelby, it's an interesting point that you mention. You've been
in Japan. You've seen the people embrace it. How do you feel
people will be in the States? You know how it is. We've been
to enough UFC's, especially, you know, back East when it goes
to the ground you hear people booing and things of that nature.
Of coarse you won't face that in Japan but once it's shown in
America, how do you think women will be perceived in Ultimate
Fighting?
Shelby:
I think that it also depends on how this fight comes off in Japan.
I don't think that they should have this fight in Atlantic City
in the next UFC. I think the waters need to be tested a little
bit of coarse. I think once people see the skills that Erica
and I have, you have to be very careful which girls they back
up. I think that the main purpose is that on paper, the striker
verses the ground fighter. It's a great match up. I don't think
there's any way to go wrong with this fight.
MMAWeekly:
It should be very interesting. I know the fans are looking forward
to it. Let me ask you. As far as when you tell people, I mean
people off the street. They ask you, "Hey, what do you do,"
and you tell them you're a professional fighter, what do they
say to you?
Shelby:
Well, I usually try to let that be the one of the last things
that comes out of my mouth because I don't want to be perceived
as, a lot of people don't understand it. Usually I say I'm a
professional boxer and then if they press me more, usually I'll
come out and say that I'm a Mixed Martial Arts fighter. Usually
tell them I'm an Ultimate Fighter because that's what people
understand. I get different reactions from different people.
Usually it's disbelief and then once they start talking about
it, they are full of questions. They can't stop asking them.
They're really interested in it. I've gotten good response from
people. You know, shock and disbelief but I think that that's
good.
MMAWeekly:
Shelby, here's the interesting question. I think with women fighting,
I think with average fan, It's going to be interesting to see
if they take this seriously. Just because. I don't mind saying
this, most men fight fans are pigs. They like certain things
about it. They root for the ring girls. People say, bottomline,
women should be in the cage as a ring card girl, not fighters,
blah blah blah. They'll comment, "will Shelby fight in a
thong?" Some of these guys have one thing on their mind.
Shelby:
Every village has an idiot. There's going to be people like that
out there but for every one person like that, there's going to
be the people that respect me as an athlete. You take the bad
with the good and just keep pressing on.
MMAWeekly:
I'm a big women's sports fan. I like women's sports within itself.
I'm a big softball fan, a big volleyball fan. When I was in college,
I loved women's sports. I'm also a big proponent for Title 9.
Do you think that with the addition of women into fighting that
it will become another hot topic for politicians and media and
what have you that it's not a legitimate sport because now you
have women fighting in it? It's still just a fantasy, like a,
lack of a better term, a WWE style event where you have two rather
attractive women that understand how to fight. Do you think that
this is going to be the type of event that's going to bring us
more heat than it will bring us notoriety?
Shelby:
I hope not. Of coarse I'm hoping for the better of the two. That's
why I think Japan's the perfect place for this fight to take
place. It's a great place to test the waters. This fight definitely
has to happen. This fight is a great fight. It has to happen
and Erica Montoya works for the UFC. She does the Spanish commentating.
I have made a lot of friends in the UFC. I just don't think you
can go wrong with this fight in Japan. I think maybe we could
get some negative feedback if we tried it out first in the United
States but that's not what we're shooting for.
MMAWeekly:
Shelby, you mention your opponent, Erica Montoya. If this fight
happens, it's going to be a great fight. You mentioned the contrast
of styles. Tell me about this fight. What do you expect? What
do you think is going to happen?
Shelby:
I think with her teammates that her stand up has gotten a lot
better. That's great. If Erica wants to stand up and bang with
me, that would be great. That would make for an exciting twenty
seconds or however long it lasts. My thoughts are, she's going
to try to shoot right in so I'm going to be doing a lot of, showing
my new wrestling skills and maybe even some of my new Jiu-Jitsu
skills at American Top Team. The amount of talent at my new academy
is so unreal. I'm blessed to even, I'm the first girl that's
ever been on American Top Team and I feel really blessed. I've
been given a lot of, I don't know, I just feel really lucky.
MMAWeekly:
How long have you been with American Top Team?
Shelby:
I've been here three months.
MMAWeekly:
That's got to be amazing to work out with the guys that are there.
What have they shown you that maybe you didn't know before you
got there?
Shelby:
So much. So much. I mean, you think you know everything and then
you realize you really don't know shit. I'm learning more of
the stuff that, these guys are unbelievable. We've got twenty
three black belts. You're on the mat training with one and then
when you get done, you train with the next one. It's unbelievable.
I can't even put it to words. I don't even know what to say.
MMAWeekly:
Shelby, do you feel this fight will be signed very soon? What's
the latest with regards to this up coming fight?
Shelby:
It's still just being talked about. I really have a good feeling
about it. That's all I can say. I really don't want to say too
much because I don't want to scare Dana off.
MMAWeekly:
[laughs] I understand. I know it's been talked about but nothings
been signed. Shelby first of all, I want to say thanks. It's
good to finally get a chance to talk with you. We'd love to see
history. I hope this all comes off and I hope it all works out
for you.
Shelby:
Thank you very much.

For
Ortiz (11-4-0 in mixed martial arts) from Huntington Beach, Calif.,
the former UFC light heavyweight champion, and Mezger (44-13-6)
from Dallas, TX, their main event battle will be the continuation
of a war that began May 30, 1997, at UFC 13: The Ultimate Force,
resumed March 5, 1999, at UFC 19: Young Guns and eventually led
to one of the biggest fights in UFC history, Ortiz match
up with Mezgers mentor Ken Shamrock November 22, 2002,
at UFC 40: Vendetta.
Both
own a victory. Mezger in the first fight by guillotine choke
amid wild controversy when Ortiz thought Mezger had tapped out,
and Ortiz by massive punches in a revenge-filled re-match that
included post-fight antics and a T-shirt message that had Shamrock
attempting to jump over the Octagon to get at Ortiz while vowing
Ill never retire from the UFC until I fight him.
That
became reality in the main event of UFC 40 when Ortiz, then the
UFC light heavyweight champion, was victorious by technical knockout
after three rounds. Now, the stage is set to settle the score
with Mezger. And yes, Shamrock will be in his corner again. Ortiz
needs a victory to get back in the light heavyweight title chase
and Mezger would definitely improve his rank in the division
with a win.
Tito
is a tremendous athlete with more experience now. He will be
favored. But, I am a warrior and have beaten many favored fighters
in the past because I always figure out a way to win. I really
expect this to be the UFCs best fight of the year,
Mezger said.
Ortiz
advises that Mezger had better be in shape. This fight
will not go the distance. Its going to be punishment and
I plan to stop him once and for all, he said.
The
battle lines are clearly drawn for the Hughes-St. Pierre welterweight
title fight. Hughes (37-4-0) from Hillsboro, Ill., was the UFC
welterweight champion until he tried a reversal move in the first
round at UFC 46: Super Natural and was caught in a rear naked
choke by BJ Penn. He lost his belt, but rebounded with a dominating
three-round unanimous decision over Renato Verissimo at UFC 48:
Pay Back!
Hughes
is one of the strongest pound-for-pound fighters in MMA who is
renown for his wrestling skills and ability to slam opponents
and deal out brutal damage on the ground. He is driven to re-gain
the title and prove he is one of the best welterweights in the
world. But St. Pierre (7-0-0) from Montreal, Canada, is the undefeated
Canadian welterweight champion who is equally dangerous standing
or on the ground. He impressed everyone in his debut at UFC 46
with a unanimous decision over judo expert Karo Parisyan followed
by a first-round knockout of Jay Hieron at UFC 48.
Hughes
knows that St. Pierre is talented. But, its too soon
for him to be taking me on, he said.
He
doesnt know whats coming. This is my time,
St. Pierre counters.
Three
middleweight matches, a welterweight bout, a light heavyweight
match and a heavyweight fight will complete the card.
With
two of the UFCs most talented young fighters moving to
middleweight, the division now rivals the light heavyweights
for competitive action.
Ruthless
Robbie Lawler (8-2-0) from Davenport, Iowa, who introduced his
explosive knockout power as a welterweight, moves up to face
veteran Evan Tanner (31-4-0) from Gresham, Ore. Lawler quickly
established a reputation as one of MMAs most dangerous
strikers with impressive wins over Aaron Riley, Steve Berger,
Tiki and Chris Lytle, the last three by KO. Just 22, Lawler is
still developing and now makes his debut as a middleweight. Tanner,
a member of UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Randy Coutures
Team Quest Fight Club, reeled off six victories as a light heavyweight
before he dropped down to middleweight and continued his win
streak with two consecutive victories over highly regarded Phil
Baroni. Tanner makes no bones about the fact he wants to be the
UFCs next middleweight champion.
Another
middleweight newcomer will be powerful Rich Franklin (17-1-0)
from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is moving down from light heavyweight
to face one of the UFCs best all-around fighters, Jorge
Rivera (9-2-0) from Milford, Mass. Franklin, an outstanding striker
with excellent submission skills, won his last two UFC fights
by TKO in the first round as a light heavyweight. He pummeled
Tanner at UFC 42: Sudden Impact in Miami, Fla., and then defeated
Edwin DeWees in just 3:35 at UFC 44: Undisputed in Las Vegas.
He will be formidable as a middleweight. But Rivera is a hardnosed
striker who likes to move forward and keep the pressure on opponents.
While striking is his strength, he has all the tools to become
a top middleweight contender. Rivera made an impressive debut
at UFC 44 with a unanimous decision win over tough Canadian David
Loiseau.
The
cards third middleweight match will pit grappler Trevor
Prangley (8-1-0) from Couer DAlene, Idaho, against Ivan
Salaverry (8-3-1) from Seattle, Wash. Prangley, a native of Cape
Town, South Africa, is a world-class grappler, but is not afraid
to stand and strike with opponents. In his last UFC appearance,
he defeated Curtis Stout at UFC 48: Payback! with a neck crank
at the 3:51 mark of round two. Salaverry is strong on the ground
or standing up. He defeated Andrei Semenov by TKO at UFC 37:
High Impact.
The
welterweight bout will have an East Coast flavor because Frank
Trigg (11-2-0) grew up in Rochester, N.Y., although he now lives
and fights out of El Segundo, Calif. His opponent, Charuto Verissimo (5-1-0) is from Hilo,
Hawaii. Trigg is world-class wrestler who is always in top condition
and he has added striking and submission skills to complement
that wrestling ability. In his last UFC fight, he defeated wily
veteran Dennis Hallman by first-round TKO with strikes on the
ground at UFC 48. Verissimo is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt
who made an impressive debut at UFC 46: Super Natural in January
with a unanimous decision victory over former welterweight champ
Carlos Newton. In his next match, he nearly submitted Hughes
at UFC 48 before losing a close decision. Also of note is the
fact Verissimo trained and coached Penn when he defeated Hughes
for the welterweight title.
In
the light heavyweight prelim match, Canadian Patrick Cote (5-0-0)
from Rimouski, Quebec, will make his UFC debut against talented
Marvin Eastman (7-3-0) from Las Vegas, Nev. Cote holds the TKO
Canadian Light Heavyweight championship and is a power puncher
who has knocked out some of Canadas toughest fighters.
His TKO belt will not be on the line in this fight. Eastman has
an extensive wrestling background and is a quick striker who
never backs down. In his UFC debut, he stepped up at UFC 43:
Meltdown and took on former light heavyweight champion Vitor
Belfort. Although Belfort won the fight en route to winning the
title, Eastman gave him all he could handle.
No
fight card is complete without a heavyweight bout and UFC 50:
War Of 04 will not disappoint fans when John Marsh (12-4-0) from
Redondo Beach, Calif., makes his UFC debut against veteran Tra
Telligman (15-4-1) from Ft. Worth, Tex. Telligman, one of the
best strikers in the heavyweight division, has fought some of
the best fighters in MMA and is renown for two incredible wars
with Pedro Rizzo. Telligman is not afraid to throw down with
anyone and feels it is time to establish him self as one of the
top UFC heavyweights. Marsh is a very aggressive heavyweight
who has excellent submission and striking skills. His biggest
weapon is a powerful right hand and he said although Telligman
is experienced, he will make a mistake and I will take
advantage of it.
