O2 Martial Arts Academy (formally known as Academia Casca Grossa de Jiu-Jitsu or the Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Aiea Academy) is based out of Aiea, Hawaii. We are still a Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Association school and part of the Relson Gracie Team. The Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling classes are led by head instructors Chris and Mike Onzuka and Shane Agena. Chris and Mike were two of only four instructors that were hand picked by Relson Gracie and specifically trained to open Relson's first satellite academy in 1995. Mike is a Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt and Chris and Shane are brown belts and numerous state Jiu-Jitsu championships and multiple time competitors in the World Championships of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Mundials) and Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championships. Mike and Shane are also successful competitors in Judo and both have brown belts from the prestigious Shobukan Judo Club. We have also added Kali-Escrima to our list of classes instructed by Ian Beltran, a long time student of the late legendary "Snookie" Sanchez.

We are excited to start boxing and kickboxing classes on February 1, 2007 and currently hold classes Tuesday and Thursday nights (see schedule below). We have none other than Kaleo Kwan as the head instructor. Kaleo is a numerous boxing and kickboxing champion as well as a successful MMA competitor. Assisting him is Chris Slavens who has an extensive background in amateur boxing and has competed in the Amateur Fighting Competition, in addition to being a 4 stripe blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our school's philosophy is simple. This academy is for the students. We start out with our vision of the ideal class. Basically, if we were students how would we want the class run? And then from there, we make improvements by taking students' suggestions and comments about the class and implementing those ideas. We feel that no one is too inexperienced to offer a suggestion, ask a question or make a comment. In fact, we welcome them. Every person that trains at O2 Martial Arts Academy is considered and treated like family. That is why end up spending so much time in and out of class together.

"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."

William A. Ward

We are constantly seeking out methods to be better instructors. We consider ourselves students who teach because we are constantly learning. This philosophy transends to our higher ranking students who naturally follow the same path, which helps accelerate the progression of the newer students. We have a great student to teacher ratio to ensure that a high level of personal instruction occurs and so that the students get the most attention for their hard earned money.

We invite anyone with an open mind, good heart and who is able to check their "ego" at the door to come join our Martial Arts Family.

We do NOT have an enrollment period. Students are welcome to enroll at any time, even during the middle of the month! We will pro-rate the tuition if you decide to start in the middle of the month so that you do not lose a dime!

Last classes of the night usually end much later if students want to continue to work out, but it is subject to the instructors direction.
All classes are Mixed Levels (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced), but classes are split up in to beginner and intermediate/advanced sub-classes within that one class. All levels warm up together and spar together at the end of class to build the team atmosphere and for more bodies to train with.

Presently, we alternate gi (uniform) and no gi (t-shirt and shorts) days on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have no gi on Fridays. For example, if Tuesday is gi, then Thursday is no gi. The next week we alternate the class that has a gi and the class that has no gi. All other days for Jiu-Jitsu are with the gi. The Kids classes will be gi only with occasional no-gi classes slipped in periodically.

We teach students with no grappling or striking experience to high level competitors. Everyone is welcome!

Please do not feel intimidated to start classes. All of the instructors carefully watch the new students to ensure that their safety is paramount. We are a family and everyone looks out for each other and respects each other's abilities and technical level. We have many professionals that include surgeons, lawyers, and engineers that are our students so if our classes are safe for these people that make their living with their hands and have to be presentable in meetings, our classes are safe for you!

Kid's Class Notes:
Acceptance of children for the kids class will be based on the child's level of maturity. If the child can sit still for a little while, pay attention, and TRY to attempt some moves when shown something, they will be accepted. We are not asking for young adults, but this is also not a baby sitting class. We also do not want to specify an age but most classes target 6 - 14 year olds. We are always open to ideas, suggestions and willing to try just about anything, so do not be afraid to ask or offer.

We reserve the right to not accept certain students both adults and children.

Our goals in the Kids class are to have fun, build self-confidence and self-worth, emphasize academics, build discipline, develop humility and respect for others, be an "extended family" support team for the child, and increase flexibility and overall fitness through the learning of Jiu-Jitsu.

We are not only building champions in martial arts, we are building champions in life.
