NAGA tournament had some great matches!

The NAGA tournament had some great fights with the Jesus Is Lord team coming in force and doing very in the no gi division. The skeleton Relson Gracie team that entered did very well in both the gi and no gi divisions and was well rounded from their beginning competitors through their advanced. In fact, I believe we may have squeaked out the team title. But we will have to wait until all of the points have been tallied.

The most impressive competitor of the day had to be Baret Yoshida. Baret won the Advanced lightweight gi and no gi divisions, the absolute no gi division and the superfight with Joao Morais (North Shore Freestyle Jiu-Jitsu), after he had won the previous three divisions.

For his efforts he walked away with two great NAGA medals and two incredible championship belts (the same belts used at the WEF and WCW).

Here are some of the key results:

Kids Gi 1st: Kyle Snyder Oliveras
Advanced Gi Lightweight 1st: Baret Yoshida
Advanced Gi Lightweight 2nd: Shane Agena
Intermediate Gi Middleweight Seniors 1st: Jeremy Kam
Beginner Gi Super Heavyweight Seniors 1st: Malcolm Ahlo
Beginner Gi Super Heavyweight 1st: Malcolm Ahlo
Absolute Gi 1st & 2nd: Jeremy Kam & Malcolm Ahlo

Kids No Gi 1st: Kyle Snyder Oliveras
Advanced No Gi Lightweight 1st: Baret Yoshida
Advanced No Gi Lightweight 2nd: Ben
Advanced No Gi Middleweight 2nd: Russ Ledda
Advanced No Gi Heavyweight 1st: Ron Jhun
Intermediate No Gi Lightweight 1st: Gary Freitas
Absolute No Gi 1st: Baret Yoshida
Absolute No Gi 2nd: Ron Jhun

Sorry for missing so many divisions, but it's getting late and I am tired. As soon as Kipp Kollar forwards me the full results, I will post them.

Probably the best part of the tournament was the comraderie of the competitors and there was not one argument, which would probably make this the first grappling tournament in Hawaii to accomplish that feat. Everyone had a great time and everyone saw some great matches. Congratulations not only to all the winners, but to each and every competitor because everyone gave their best today.

NAGA hits Hawaii today!

Today the Hawaii NAGA grappling tournament takes place at Martinez Gym in Schofield Barracks. The doors open at 11:00AM and the actual tournament is scheduled to begin at 12:00PM.

Inside sources also reported that the Superfight has been changed to:
Joao Morais (North Shore Freestyle Jiu-Jitsu)
versus
Egan Inoue (Grappling Unlimited Hawaii)
(Charuto had to drop out due to a rib injury)

The absolute winner will also receive $150.00 in cold hard cash in addition to a belt.

Good luck to all the competitors and if we are not wiped out watching the action, we will post some highlights.

Baret Yoshida Wins!

According to reports, Baret Yoshida has won a majority decision (30-27, 29-29, 29-28) in a three 5-minute A-Class rounds over Okuchi in the latest Shooto event in Japan on September 15, 2000. The event was called R.E.A.D. (Real Evolution Acute Deficiation) 2000 Shooto "Um Caminho Para o Campeao." It looks like Baret almost triangled and got the reverse naked choke on Okuchi. The photos below are courtesy of World Renown Fight Photographer Susumu Nagao. We will post more details as they come in.

On the same card, Stephen "Bozo" Paling from the Jesus is Lord Gym won by TKO in the second round (2:23 min) over Abe Hiroyuki.

Congratulations to both local fighters and thanks again Susumu!

Onzuka.com is back up!

Sorry for being off-line for a little while. We finally got off our ISP's space and actually signed up with a web hosting provider. Now (when we have the time) you will see a lot of changes to Onzuka.com. Also our emails won't get bounced back to you.

Put your orders in now for what things you would like to see on Onzuka.com. We want to make this site your primary source for everything (primarily based in Hawaii of course).

We have a ton of room to expand and add all kind of new features that are available to us. We just need the time to go through all the things, sit down and plug away.

One of the first things we are planning to do is move the index page of onzuka.com to a personal page and revamp the index page to include links that everyone goes to on a daily basis.

Has it been 10 years already?

Well, everyone, we just went to our 10 year high school reunion. We survived it and enjoyed seeing all of our old friends. We definitely send a big aloha to all of our classmates that are visiting our site. It was good to see everyone again.

Man we are getting old! Well, that which does not kill us will only make us stronger.

We wish everyone the best of luck for the future and we look forward to seeing everyone with a ton of kids and no hair at our 20th reunion.

Please keep in touch with us and drop us an email every so often to let us know what is going on. Email us at Mike@Onzuka.com or Chris@Onzuka.com

Rickson to fight Sakuraba?

This comes from Susumu's webmaster:
By the way, I was at the stadium. It was very impressive that Sakuraba seemed to be in very bad shape. He apologized after the fight that he had been too defensive on the day. Renzo said "It was confirmed that he is very tough. I welcome him as a Japansese member of Gracie family." Just after this comment, Ryan [Gracie] challenged Sakuraba! [Vanderlei] Silva and Vitor [Belfort] also challenged Sakuraba, so now there are many fighters who want to defeat him.

I think Sakuraba will not fight Vitor because Sakuraba often says he do not want to fight with heavier fighter. And he quit keeping his weight heavy so now he is around 187 lb. Anyway, according to a [Japanese] newspaper, DSE president Morishita is going to negotiate with Rickson to fight Sak.

 9/3/00

Baret Yoshida to fight Mamoru Okuchi

Hawaii's own and Shooto number 5 ranked Lightweight, Baret "the Baretcuda" Yoshida, will fight number 8 ranked Shooto Lightweight Mamoru Okuchi in late September in Japan. He plans to leave Hawaii around September 12. Baret is in incredible shape and looking sharper than ever. He is looking to continue his winning ways and eventually take the Lightweight title and bring it back to Hawaii.

Change in Naga Hawaii Superfight

According to reports, Joao Moraes has decided on having a match with Renato "Charuto" Verrissimo of Nova Uniao. Charuto has taken second and third place in the black belt world championships, but will be giving up about 15-20 lbs to Joao. Hopefully this fight goes through and Hawaii BJJ fans should be able to see two black belts go at it on September 23 at Schofield Barracks.

 8/30/00

Relson Gracie is back in Hawaii

Relson has returned to Hawaii after a successful seminar tour in Guam. Many qualified practioners in the Guam association school got promoted to blue and blue with stripes. Congratulations to all these warriors on their promotion and we all can't wait to see these competitors in the upcoming International Tournament on October 14.

NAGA Superfight Rumor

One rumored superfight that is circulating around Hawaii is that Purple Belt and 1997 Blue Belt World Champion Kendall Goo will have a match with Machado Black Belt and North Shore Jiu-Jitsu instructor Joao Moraes. It should be an interesting match since Kendall has the size, but Joao is a black belt.

Also, world and Brasiliero champion (in various belts) and current brown belt Kai Garcia is looking for a superfight for himself at this first ever NAGA Hawaii tournament. My suggestion would be Machado world champion and new NHB star Rico Rodrigues. Both guys are highly skilled BJJ and huge guys.

Renzo is back in NY!
This report is from our very reliable source in New York as well as other reports...

Renzo returned to his New York academy still with good spirits. He was wearing a soft cast on his arm, but according to reports, his arm is NOT broken. That's good news. After watching a tape of the fight, the fight was going back and forth, but Renzo looked like he had the advantage. Sakuraba looked like he did not want to fight with Renzo standing or on the ground. When Sak would get the takedown, he would stand back up and kick Renzo's legs. Renzo countered with some solid shots that hurt Sakuraba. When Renzo took his back, Sak tried for his patented standing kimura. As Renzo pulled his arm to get out of the lock, Sak twisted at the same time and cracked Renzo's arm even before they got to the ground. After the fight, Renzo told Sak that he wants to fight him again and Sak agreed. Renzo has a couple more fights left in his contract with Pride and will fight someone else next, then hopefully back to Sak for revenge. Roleta (2000 black belt world champion) accompanied Renzo to Japan and is staying a few days at the NY academy.

Ryan looked very solid in his debut fight and dominated the talented wrestler. Ryan started the match with his legendary evil eye that if you saw if before, you would never forget that look. Ryan took down the wrestler and basically beat the crap out of him.

Matt Serra completely dominated his opponents at the Abu Dhabi trials and is looking forward to testing his skills in the main event. Spectators at the trials say that he was just on another level, grappling wise. Much was expected from Serra and he delivered big time.

I'm back and I was extremely relaxed after visiting "The Friendly Isle," until I got home and back into the reality of the real world. I had an anxiety attack reading my mail (and email), unpacking, and getting all my errands done today before having to go back to the bump and grind of a 10 hour a day "real job" and my two part-time jobs (BJJ & FCF).

It's no wonder why they call it "the Friendly Isle," everyone I met was extremely cool. I even met a few guys that are very interested in BJJ and NHB. If we are lucky enough, we will be able to repay their hospitality with some of our own. I invited them to the Aiea Academy if they came to Oahu. If you guys have never gone or wanted to go to Molokai, all I can say is DO IT! You won't regret it, but don't blame me if you never come back!

Aloha,
Chris

Mike's Quick Mundial Update

Sorry it took me so long to tell you how Kaleo and I did. By the rush and the results, I guess you can tell that we didn't do so great. I lost my first match in the brown belt, peso leve (under 161 lbs) by a score of 2x0. My opponent pulled me to guard, tried to sweep a couple of times so I attempted a footlock. When I sat back for the footlock, he took the top and got the two points. I couldn't finish him with the footlock so I placed him in my guard and attempted to submit him with reverse armlocks and triangles, but ran out of time. He was a very game opponent with excellent sweeps.

I entered the open weight class and fought a very big guy from Brazilian Top Team. I flew to half guard and he just held me there, doing nothing, for most of the match. I finally went nuts at the end of the match to try something, missed an armbar and ended up crossed. I believe I lost this match by a couple of advantages. The guy who beat me submitted all the rest of his opponents and took second in the open weight class.

Kaleo didn't have much luck either. In his first match, he was swept to the mount where the match ended at 6x0. In the open, his opponent pulled him to guard and ended up winning by an advantage or two.

Overall, Relson's Hawaii team did not do so great at the Mundial, but in the end we all had a great time and was glad that we spent all that money to go there. Shane, Zac, Kaleo, and myself bonded and had very memorable experiences. We also had a chance to meet the Philadelpha team headed by Brown Belt Steve Maxwell of Maxercise. He is an incredibly nice and supportive guy. I have heard many good things about Steve and I can tell you personally that everything is true. I highly recommend anyone in the Philadelphia area to check Steve's school out. He is supposed to be coming out to Hawaii soon and I am looking forward to learning a lot from him. His master's team swept the International Masters Tournament the next weekend with (what it seemed like) everyone placing. Steve and his wife, DC, both won gold medals and Steve also won the open weight. He continuously shows that he can compete with the best and win as well as train champions.

The Latest Pride Fight Card

Pride: Return of the Warriors

September 8 at 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

Pride is said to be aired on DirectTV. It is not known if the local Hawaii sports bars will

carry this event. As soon as we get confirmation, we will post it here so check back.

Kazushi Sakuraba vs Renzo Gracie

This looks to be an epic battle between the two best middleweights in the world. Renzo will show the world if Sakuraba is overrated or really the best middleweight.

Ken Shamrock vs Kazuyuki Fujita

Fujita is Shamrock's first test in his bid back into the heavyweight division (Remember, Fujita took out Kerr).

Mark Kerr vs Borisov Igor

Kerr is back to avenge his loss and looks like he is trying to stay busy fighting against this relative no-name fighter.

Enson Inoue vs Igor Vovchanchyn

Some could say that these two are both in the top 5 heavyweights in the world. Can Enson use his submission skills and avoid the knockout power of Igor? I think this may be the best fight on the card with the exception of Sakuraba/Gracie.

Ricco Rodriguez vs "Giant" Ochiai

Ricco is slowly climbing the ranks of the NHB world and looks to use the Ochiai as a "Giant" stepping stone to bigger fights.

Gilbert Yvel vs Gary Goodridge

Two big punchers will probably make for a very exciting match up.

Vitor Belfort vs Daijiro Matsui

The second match back for Vitor Belfort against a pretty slick competitor in Matsui. This should be a good tune up match for Belfort, but don't underestimate Matsui's skills.

Ryan Gracie vs Tokimitsu Ishizawa

The most vicious street fighter in the Gracie Family, Ryan, makes his NHB debut. Can the younger brother of Renzo and Ralph apply his street fighting experience to the regulated sport of NHB?

Satake Masaaki vs Kazunari Murakami

A classic striker vs grappler match up. Both fighters are at the top of their sports, Masaaki in K-1 and Murakami in Judo. I hope Masaaki learned some ground techniques or this one may be a sleeper.

Guy Mezger vs Vanderlei Silva

Two of the most exciting middleweights face off. Mezger, who many people say beat Sakuraba, will face the very aggressive, "Axe Murderer." This one should be another great fight.
