Warriors Quest Weigh-ins and Press Conference
Hawaii Prince Hotel
Honolulu, Hawaii
12:00 Noon, November 30, 2001
By Michael Onzuka

As everyone knows by now, what you see is not always what you get, especially in fight cards. Due to many circumstances, the UFC veterans, Eugene "Wolf" Jackson and Brad Gumm, that were supposed to be fighting Hawaii fighters are no longer on the card. Some new faces for the Hawaii fans stepped in to face three of Hawaii's growing top guns in the MMA scene. Two of Shooto's retired champ, Erik Paulson's students face Ray "Bradda" Cooper and Falaniko Vitale. Word on the street was that Niko was not sure that he could make the 185 lb. class, but has shown that he can hang with everyone he has faced at 205. He would make waves in the 185 lb. class, but the 205 lb. class is flooded with many great fighters so it will probably be more difficult to make a name for himself. Ron "The Machine Gun" Jhun returns to action after his epic battle against Pete Spratt to face the Pride veteran, Shannon "The Cannon" Ritch. Ritch is just off a performance in the Ironheart Crown show where he faced Henry Matamoros. As noticed in the fight card, the Jesus is Lord team has suffered a break up, but I will find out more after talking to the key members of the team before speculating. The remaining fights on the card mixes Hawaii's up and coming fighters against Chris Brennan's Next Generation Team and Eugene Jackson's Team Gladiator. Both fighters were there to support and corner their stable of fighters. Jackson looked trim and in shape and Brennan is always ready for war. UFC and WFA veteran refereee, Larry Landless, will be the head referee for the event and ran the rules meeting. The Warriors Quest is complying to the Nevada Athletic Commission and UFC rules. The press conference was held at the beautiful Hawaii Prince Hotel at the entrance to Waikiki and near the large Ala Moana Shopping Center. It was quite an upscale venue and the best layout I have seen for a press conference. If the fights live up to anywhere of the same class as the weigh-in venue, Hawaii fans should enjoy the show.

Traffic Camera Locations & More
Be Careful!

Red-light enforcement cameras will be installed at ten key intersections on Oahu within the next few weeks, the first being Vineyard Boulevard and Punchbowl Street. Additional intersections on Oahu will be added over the next several months, with the neighbor islands being added in mid-2002.

Other Oahu Red-Light Intersections:
Farrington Highway and Nanakuli Avenue
Fort Weaver Road and Aawa Drive/Old Fort Weaver Road
H-1 Exit 18 (end of Airport Viaduct) and Middle Street
Kalanianaole Highway and Ainakoa Avenue/Waikui Street
Kamehameha Highway and Pali Momi Street
Kunia Road and Kupuna Loop
Likelike Highway and Kahekili Highway
Nimitz Highway and Kalihi Street
Pali Highway and School Street

Speeding enforcement will be conducted by "speed vans" that will be parked along highways. Operators using laser speed guns will clock vehicles, with speeding vehicles automatically photographed using a digital camera.

"The object is not to see how many tickets we can issue," Transportation Department spokeswoman Marilyn Kali said. "The object is to make our highways safer for everyone."

Speeding Enforcement Highways:
Farrington Highway
Fort Weaver Road
H-1 Freeway, H-2 Freeway, H-3 Freeway
Kahekili Highway
Kalanianaole Highway
Kamehameha Highway,
Route 83 Kamehameha Highway,
Route 99 Kaneohe Bay Drive
Kunia Road
Likelike Highway
Moanalua Freeway
Nimitz Highway
Pali Highway

Officials said they do not know how many tickets will be issued per day using the photo enforcement system. However, the city of Phoenix, Ariz., issues 2,000-3,000 tickets a day using the system.

Currently, Honolulu police issue an average of 103 traffic citations per day.
Red-light violators will be fined at least $77.

Speeders will be fined at least $27 plus $5 for each mile-per-hour over the speed limit.

The company providing the cameras, Affiliated Computer Services, will receive $29.75 of each paid citation.

Baret is a married man!

One of Hawaii's top MMA fighters, Baret Yoshida, has followed Chris and my lead and have taken the big plunge in to marriage. He got married on October 26, but kept it low profile. He married a girl that he met in Japan. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Baret Yoshida!

Austin Rep Fight Results

Phil Cardella who is the Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Association Representative in Austin, Texas just fought in another MMA event. In his first fight, he won in just 24 seconds with an armbar from the triangle. He was beat in his second match by armbar by a Gracie Purple Belt. He entered a higher weight class than his normal weight so he was already at a disadvantage. Phil plans on entering the Machado tournament in Dallas on December 15. Congratulations Phil!

Semenov and Suloev sign with the UFC

I know what you're thinking. Who are these guys? They sound familiar, but I can't place the names with the faces. They are the two fighters from Red Devil fighting club from Russia who fought in the Brazilian NHB event in the movie "Rites of Passage." Both are killer stand up and ground fighters and have huge hearts. They easily disposed of their opponents. It will be interesting to see how they do against some big names in the UFC. See below for a bio of each fighter.

Russian fighters Andrei Semenov and Amar Suloev have signed contracts tocompete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Both fighters will be
featured on the UFC: Throw Down card on January 11, 2002, at the Mohegan SunCasino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Their opponents have yet to be determined.

Tickets for UFC: Throw Down are on sale now at MoheganSun.com and

UFC 35: Throwdown
Friday, January 11 - Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut

Here's a little bio on the fighters:

Andrei Semenov

Age: 25
Weight: 84 kg
Height: 183 cm

Mastery in Martial Arts: Judo, Sambo, Hand-to-Hand Fighting
Fights: 26 Won: 25 Lost: 1
Athletic Experience - I started fighting in 5th grade. I went in for Judo, Sambo, and Hand-to-Hand Fighting. I wanted to learn to fight, develop fighting skills and use them in combination. I've been competing in Mix Fight from 1999.
Fears - It's not just interest, it's more like a need. When you do it you feel the adrenaline pump. I went on the ring for the first time a year and a half ago. There was no fear; I was just shy because there were so many people around. But meeting your opponent face to face in an enclosed area is something to be felt.
Idols - I don't have idols. There are athletes who I like to watch and learn from.
Victories (titles) - Russian champion in Mix Fight 1999, European champion in Mix Fight 2000, World champion in Mix Fight 2000, Winner of European title superfight on 2H2H Tournament 2001.

Amar Suloev

Vitor "Shaolin" Riberio Interview

Shaolin is my favorite BJJ fighter. I think pound for pound that he is the best technically and to watch. He is a multiple BJJ world champion and took up wrestling and I believe he won the Brazilian National Championship. Now he has taken up NHB and was successful in his first event against Charlie Kohler in John Lewis' WFA in Las Vegas. I can't wait to see this match on video. Here's an interesting interview I saw on the Abu Dhabi page.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Tell me about you NHB debut.
"Shaolin"- I think that considering the small amount of time that I had to absorb what NHB is, my participation was very interesting. I liked it, and everything that I had worked out here in Brazil I got to do there, I didn't have any blank moments in my mind, I wasn't nervous and I was concentrated enough. If I distracted myself, it was in the moment that it could happen, summarizing, everything went right and it was as my master and I were expecting.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Judging by your debut, did you see if you’re or aren’t qualified to NHB?
"Shaolin"- I think that being qualified or not depends whether you do or don’t have time to train, so I will continue doing it and this was another challenge for me, as many others that I had in my career in Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling and Submission. NHB is a different adrenaline because punches, kicks and some "bad surprises"' an happen with you and that I was not used to in 8 years of my fighting career. You need to be always training, making the training harder than the fight and that really happened.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- You talked about the time of training to be or not capable to NHB, which was the time that you had and which, in your opinion, would be the ideal time of training to NHB?
"Shaolin"- I had 2 months to train, but since I was training Submission and Jiu Jitsu, I was a little more prepared. In my opinion a guy who will make his NHB debut, and is well conditioned physically, 4 months of training will give the debuting fighter a real conception of what a fight will be. I, in the first weeks of training, didn’t have this conception of NHB and I was very concerned about protecting my face, so I just trained Jiu Jitsu, after some time I got to understand and assimilate those things, training everything - my last trainings here in the academy were excellent and I went to the USA with a lot of confidence.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- In your trainings here, you trained the guard position a lot, were you concerned about being on the bottom?
"Shaolin"- I was always a guard fighter and I feel good in this position where many athletes don't develop their game. If I had gotten on the bottom against Charlie Kohler, I‘d be relaxed, because this is a game that I always did, I think that I would defend well and would get to sweep him. I trained way more on the bottom than on top, but I also trained my takedowns and that’s how I got a good position in that fight.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Do you also think that this kind of training is what all fighters should do? Because on the top everybody is good, but when the fighter is on the bottom in a fight, it can be very hard to him.
"Shaolin"- Yes, because you need to be really careful fighting on the bottom. When fighting on the bottom you can’t cause much damage to your opponent with punches, that’s why it’s necessary a training a little more focused to that. To take punches, absorb or defend and try to attack also. My training gave me a lot of confidence to stay on the top or not.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Is the largest concern of a debuting fighter not to be on the bottom?
"Shaolin"- Speaking about me, I trained with Beto Leitão Filho to take my opponent down, but I was ready to work in the half or full guard.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Still talking about Kohler, did you get to watch some other fight of him other than that against Jason Meaders in KOTC 4?
"Shaolin"- I got to watch another fight of him, where I could study his game a little bit more. But I was going to fight the next day and I couldn’t elaborate any strategy.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Did you have the impression that he was wrestler and he'd make a closed game like in that fight in KOTC 4?
"Shaolin"- I thought he had good takedowns, but I didn't have any idea of his size or if he was fast. In that fight in KOTC 4 I could see that he holds the fight a lot and likes to use the fence in his favor. I think that if he tried the take me down, I'd get to defend and get his back.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Did you train Muay Thai with Luiz Alves to trade blows with Kohler or to give you a better notion of distance? "Shaolin"- I'd only get in the clinch with Kohler if I had a good notion of distance standing up, the trainings that I did with Luiz Alves were exactly to that - to begin a trade of blows, not to insist in it and to attack his legs to the takedown - I can tell you that my fight was 1st Muay Thai, 2nd Wrestling and 3rd Jiu Jitsu. Without Muay Thai's training I'd never get to shorten the distance. Muay Thai also made that I didn't fear the punches that I'd probably take, so much that I took some short punches and I wasn't intimidated. When I tried the takedown I went so perfectly that I immediately took him down.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- And your psychological side, did you get to control the adrenaline?
"Shaolin"- My friend, I got to control the nervousness, but the adrenaline made that I don't remember anything about the fight.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Really?
"Shaolin"- It's true, I remember that I tried a jab, took some punches in the face, took him down and ended it with elbows, I also remember that when a cut opened in the Kohler's face, I stopped to see where was bleeding from and his coach said: "Kohler, he's tired, let's go", but actually I only decreased the punishment to check the cut. The fight details I can only tell you when I watch the tape of the event.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Didn't his punches affect you?
"Shaolin"- The punches from the bottom don't have a lot of effect, I think that the fighter on the bottom needs to try the submission, because the rules don't allow kicks from the guard. Kohler didn't have the Jiu Jitsu skills to submit me, his punches bothered me a little but didn’t dazed me, they hurt a little but not really dangerous.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Does the reasoning speed have to be faster fighting NHB than fighting Jiu Jitsu and Submission?
"Shaolin"- Due to the rules, you can make mistakes fighting Jiu Jitsu and Submission, making your opponent get points and advantages (sweeps and/or guard passing), and if the fighter is well prepared he gets to recover. In NHB and talking mainly about the fight - "Shaolin" vs. Kohler – Kohler made a mistake - he didn't block my elbows - and the blows connected and hurt him a lot, I got to open a cut in him and that scares any fighter. NHB doesn't have place to big mistakes, if you're on the ground and decide to stand up, but forget to protect your face, you can take a blow that sometimes won’t hurt, but other times it can knock you out or hurt you badly.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- I talked with João Roque about the importance of André Pederneiras in his corner and he told me that he was fundamental in his last fight(before WFA); and to you, how important was it?
"Shaolin"- It was identical like Roque’s situation, Pederneiras told Roque to try the armlock a few seconds before the end of the round. In my situation was regarding the elbows. When you're fighting, you can’t think many things at the same time, sometimes you're insisting in a move, but your corner is seeing other form, a better one, for you to win the fight. I know that there are some good coaches in the world, but Pederneiras is with me for 8 years, and he's perfect and fundamental to my career.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Were your expectations about WFA surpassed?
"Shaolin"- The event was very good, very well organized and there are rumors that WFA 3 will be shown on pay per view, because there will be fights for the belts. The people who are always in UFC, were there enjoying WFA and the fights were even and beautiful. All the ingredients that the Americans like in NHB events were on the WFA.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Two fighters from Nova União (Roque and you) were there, fighting in the WFA. Do you think that the event can give opportunities to other Nova União fighters make their debuts, fighters like Leonardo Santos?
"Shaolin"- Definitely, I think the only things that are necessary are: train hard and show interest for the stuff. I think that the doors are open and Pederneiras is giving his support.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Talking now about UFC, you said that BJ Penn would defeat Caol Uno and that happened. Give me your opinion on the fight for the title between BJ Penn and Jens Pulver. "Shaolin"- I think that it won't be an easy fight because Pulver has been winning well, fights fast and is used to fight 5x5 minute rounds. I think it won't be a fight to KO, but for the judges decision, both fighters have a good game on their feet - Pulver is left-handed and Penn has 1 TKO and 2 KOs in UFC – summarizing, it will be a great fight and won't be easy for none of the two, ‘a porrada vai cantar’ (it will be a war) and will win the one who has more heart. I bet all my ‘bills’ on Penn.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- You had told me that after your fight in WFA, you would still like to fight this year, will that happen?
"Shaolin"- I wanted fight in SHOOTO - ' To The Final Top~The Act', against Dokonjonosuke Mishima, but nobody from SHOOTO contacted me and I got a little disappointed. When I had a Jiu Jitsu fight against Yuki Nakai in ' 99, I told the promoters of SHOOTO that I'd like to fight there 2 years later, it'd be now in 2001, but they didn't show any interest. Now, the only fight for me is in WFA 2 in Las Vegas (Feb. 11, 2002).

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- But if an invitation from some event happened this year, would you go?
"Shaolin"- No, NHB isn't Jiu Jitsu. Maybe, this year, I’ll make Jiu-Jitsu fight, that is an art that I am used to, in Jean Jacques Machado’s event on the December 9th. A NHB fighter’s career is hard to be built, and I want to try to built it to me in the best way possible, I'm still young and I want to get to do the things that some NHB fighters didn't do.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Did you feel in your debut that you need to improve something in your game? "Shaolin"- I think that in the life we always have to be improving, but talking about NHB, I need to improve my striking game. I have to train twice as I trained in JJ to get good on my feet. The striking fight gives you more confidence.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- This striking fight would be kicks, punches or both? "Shaolin"- Both without doubts, I need to work with punches - power, speed and accuracy - and kicks, specially the low-kicks because when an opponent start to receive low-kicks without getting to block them, he loses confidence. I train that and I know how hard is it to receive those low-kicks without getting to block them.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Are you, after getting to show a good NHB debut, abandoning Jiu-Jitsu as well as many others?
"Shaolin"- If the next WFA edition was, for example, on July 15th, I'd be back to Rio de Janeiro on the July 20th, I can affirm that I wouldn't fight the Jiu-Jitsu Mundial. But if the event happens in May and I have 2 months to train, I would fight the Jiu-Jitsu Mundial with a lot of pleasure, I'm just talking about the Mundial, because it's an event that has more repercussion, the other tournaments don't have that much repercussion. I am focused in NHB.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Well "Shaolin", I hope you aren't so displeased with the press, especially with ADCC News.
"Shaolin"- ADCC News always gave a good attention to who's showing his value, I'm a little upset with other sectors of press that don't give value to me or the other great athletes.

FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil- Anything else you’d like to add?
"Shaolin"- Yes, I want to thank André Pederneiras, to thank again Roni from PET-FOOD, Paulo Caruso and Pimentel – those are people that are making my career. I can’t say the name of everybody who gave me support for this fight because I would certainly forget somebody, but I want to thank everyone from the Nova União academy.

Pride 17 Commentary

I got to see Pride 17 last night and was very impressed with the quality of fights. The Heath Herring/Minotauro fight was probably the best I've seen in Pride. Renzo's fight was pretty boring because his opponent literally did not want to fight. He eventually got yellow carded to disqualification. Probably the most interesting thing about this fight was that Royce cornered Renzo. Royce didn't look like he did much than just stay in the corner. In the pre-fight interview, Royce said that Renzo knows everything and he was just there to give him water. Vanderlei showed that he is pretty good in the guard as he almost armbarred Sakuraba. I still don't know why he didn't finish it. Sakuraba dislocated his shoulder and couldn't continue giving Vanderlei the decision. Dan Henderson won a very controversial decision against Murilo Ninja where Ninja clearly won the fight. Mario Sperry looked a bit sloppy trying to pass Igor Vovchanchin's guard. He was having trouble holding Igor down. He eventually got Igor with a head and arm choke, but I have heard that Igor had something medically wrong with him prior to the fight because Igor tapped very quickly. Semmy Schmit showed some decent standup skills using a good jab and straight punches mixed with a few kicks to drop Masaaki Satake who was a K-1 kickboxer. He was clearly out classed and fustrated throughout the fight.

On the show, Bas Rutten announced that he will return to fighting. He did not indicate when or which event.

Bring on BYU

For those fans who missed the UH football game on Saturday, once again you missed a great game. The UH offense looks unstoppable. If the defense tightens up on the run, BYU is in for a long night.

Fujita with Top Team?

Now more than ever, more fighters are making alliances with each other to expand their techniques. Sometimes this can be both good and bad. The good thing, of course, is the opportunity to expand your knowledge. The bad can be lack of potential fights and the trust issue. Below is an article stating that Fujita is going to train with the Brazilian Top Team. Personally, I don't think that this is a good move because Fujita is at the top of the heavyweight rankings in Pride and Mario Sperry has just beaten the powerhouse, Igor Vovchanchin, which puts him in the top five heavyweights in the world. Now both will not be able to fight each other because of agreements. I am not sure how Pride will deal with this fact and it make hurt each fighter's marketability. They may make Fujita an offer he can't refuse and then the Top Team has just lost their competitive edge as far as unknown techniques against the many Japanese that train together. Just a thought. Enjoy the news below.

Crosstraining is a reality nowadays and professional fighters are looking for something new to add to their games every single day. After some negotiations, a strong and solid partnership has been established between Brazilian Top Team and Japan's Inoki team. Antonio Inoki is well known as one of the most influential personalities in Japan's fight scene. Brazilian Top Team is nowaday considered one of the biggest powerhouses in NHB. Both parts came together in a partnership in which Japanese fighters will have a camp in Brazil to work out with the Brazilian Top Team & learn their secrets. PRIDE star and top Japanese heavy weight fighter Kazuyuki Fujita is coming to Brazil next week to get ready for his fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

In their first fight Cro Cop won due to a big cut and Fujita couldn't continue to fight. This time the rematch promises more action and new stuff from Fujita. Stay tuned for more news on this issue soon.

Tips of following the World Wrestling Championships on the Net

I always enjoy Eddie Goldman's articles and this was one that I saw that has very good info for the wrestling fans out there (which includes myself). Check out these sites and I hope I can catch some of the world championships on video from someone (hint, hint).

There is nothing like being at an event live, but when you cannot, there is little like trying to follow the results as closely as possible in real-time on the Internet. That is the case with the 2001 Freestyle Wrestling World Championships, tucked away in Sofia, Bulgaria, but being covered in English on several international web sites by journalists and representatives of wrestling federations who are in Bulgaria.

There is an English-language host web site for this event run by the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation. Results for both the men's and women's competitions are now being updated. The last day of competition is Sunday, Nov. 25. Make sure to look carefully at the spellings of the names of any athletes you are following, because they have sometimes been transliterated one or more times, and may not look the way you are accustomed to in English.

Comprehensive coverage is also going on by USA Wrestling at Themat.com. The emphasis here is on the American wrestlers, but there is plenty of other information as well. This site also has Themat.com Forums section that is frequented by people from the wrestling community from many countries. A lot of useful information about web sites and other issues has been posted here. These forums are moderated.

Another slant can be found on the Canadian Wrestling News section of the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association site. Here you will find information about Canadian wrestlers, as well as general updates.

The English-language news page of the Japan Wrestling Federation provides much coverage of Japan's team in Bulgaria. There is also a wealth of background information.

You can also get updates on the Iranian team at the Islamic Republic News Agency ( I R N A )Sport News site. This is the sports section of a general news and information site, but since wrestling is the national sport in Iran, the World Championships are getting major coverage.

These are the best resources that I have found in English. Many of these sites have main or other sections in other languages, and there are other sites in other languages also. Between them, you can not only be kept p-to-date, but also see the different perspectives of how this event is being covered in many countries.

As to TV coverage, FILA, the international wrestling federation, has a deal with Eurosport. Specific information on when and where it will be broadcast is not available yet. In the U.S., negotiations were continuing this week between FILA and ESPN for a last-minute deal for taped coverage. We will keep you informed when those are resolved.

The Greco-Roman World Championships will held Dec. 6-9 in Greece.

If you have more information about useful web sites about the Freestyle World Championships, please e-mail it to: eddiegoldman@excite.com.

Shop Till You Drop

Today is the biggest shopping day of the year. What are you doing wasting your time on the net? Go out there and get those bargins! The problem I have with shopping for gifts on days with a lot of sales is that I end up buying myself a bunch of stuff that I could probably do without, but somehow I get over it. Remember the rules while in the crowded malls:

1. No eye gouging
2. No fish hooking
3. No biting
4. No kicking to the groin

Viloria to box again

Hawaii's Viloria to fight again for his country

Waipahu's Brian Viloria, who fought at the Sydney Olympics last year, will fight his fourth pro bout and first six-rounder tomorrow night at the Roseland Ballroom in New York.

Viloria, 3-0 as a pro in the 112-pound division, goes up against 29-year-old Mike Thomas (4-2-1) of Baltimore.

The bout is part of "Fighting for America: A Night of Thanksgiving," a series of fights to benefit the families of the victims of the World Trade Center attacks.

"I fought for my country in the Olympics," Viloria said yesterday during a workout at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. "This is another way for us to do something to help our country and give something back to our community."

Wave-height reporting confusing at best, deadly at worst
By Will Hoover
Honolulu Advertiser North Shore Writer
Posted Thursday, November 22, 2001

Surfers far and wide understand clearly that O'ahu's North Shore waves this time of year are among the biggest anywhere. But how big?

That's the confusing part. In fact, confusion is the word most often used to describe the way Hawai'i's wave heights are calculated — especially this big-wave season, when a 10-foot wave is roughly twice the size it was last year.

"The process is in a state of confusion right now," said Rick Grigg, University of Hawai'i oceanographer and one of the first people to conquer the legendary big waves at Waimea in 1958.

"I get confused myself," said Joe Green, owner of Hale'iwa's Surf N Sea surf shop as he tried to gauge the size of a typical North Shore wave yesterday.

"That's about 5 feet," he said. "That's local size. Of course, if you measure the face of that wave, it's an easy 10 feet from the pit."

So, is it a 5-foot wave or a 10-foot wave? It's both, depending on how you measure it. And that fact has some safety experts worried.

This year the National Weather Service has tried to make the measuring process more uniform by strictly reporting waves by what's known as their face value — meaning the height of the face of a wave.

Trouble is, the people who feed the numbers to the service report heights that are "all over the map," said Bob Burke, a meteorologist for the weather service in Honolulu who trained O'ahu lifeguards in the accurate reporting of wave heights.

Burke said he met resistance from those who are used to reporting local-style wave measurements, which in general are half the height of face value and are figured in a cryptic manner.

Safety vs. local custom

Before this year, the weather service reported local-size and not face value. For example, a 10-foot wave reported last year would be approximately a 20-foot wave this year, although Burke said the larger the wave the less the disparity.

"We're currently going through a learning curve," said Roy Matsuda, lead forecaster for the weather service. "I'm sure it will get better as the numbers are more consistent. But we are all in a bit of confusion right now."

Said John Cummings, public information officer for O'ahu Civil Defense: "We're aware of the problem and we have been able to work around it. We work directly from the National Weather Service figures, and the weather service is always fine-tuning."

Surf forecaster and UH oceanographer Pat Caldwell said the situation pits real safety issues against the local custom of under-reporting the size of a wave.

"I call it local scale," said Caldwell, whose own forecast Web site lists face value wave predictions as well as local scale, which he logs at exactly half the face value.

Grigg says 40 years ago all O'ahu waves were measured at face value — "from top to bottom, up and down.

"Then, lifeguards began underestimating because it was cool to say a 6-foot wave was 3. Then, surfers started doing it."

Soon, surfers realized that if they understated the wave size, fewer surfers would show up, said Grigg. That reinforced the practice. When people questioned how a 10-foot wave could be a 5-foot wave, Grigg said, "the surfers thought and said, 'We measure them from the back of the wave.' "

Both Grigg and Caldwell say a wave's height can't be measured from the back.

"That was just an attempt to make sense out of something that didn't make sense," said Caldwell. "A way for someone to justify an illogical system."

All of which is academic. The trouble, according to the experts, is that many tourists don't know local from face value and are not aware of the local measuring system. So, they hear about 3-foot waves on the North Shore and head for the famous, though dangerous, waters.

"We've had some serious accidents because tourists went out there and broke their necks," said Grigg. He blames the local surfers.

O'ahu lifeguards, caught in the middle, are the best in the world, Grigg insists.

Burke said initial lifeguard resistance tended to fade once he pointed out the seriousness of the matter and that the weather service's forecasts aren't merely geared for local surfers.

"When you bring up the safety issues, that gets their attention," said Burke.

More art than science

Jim Howell, the state's chief of lifeguards, said the idea of face value being accurate is subjective.

"All of this talk about wave size does not give an accurate depiction of what happens at surf spots around the islands," said Howell, who added that lifeguards have no tools to measure waves.

What can be measured accurately is the swell, said Howell. But the swell creates different wave breaks, so the lifeguards are in the position of trying to figure out what to report, he said.

The bottom line, he said, is that the wave's measurement is still open to opinion.

Caldwell acknowledged that measuring waves is more art than science.

"It's kind of a fuzzy value because along any given wave front the height will vary in size," he said. "Waves have different breaking characteristics that affect the measurement."

Those who want to guess a wave's height can get a fairly accurate idea by measuring the face of it in proportion to the general height of the person riding it, he said.

For newcomers and those unfamiliar with the North Shore's treacherous breaks, the measurement that matters most is the distance between the waves and the safest spot on shore, Caldwell said.

Joel Gets His Purple!

The stud's stud, Joel Sturgeon, from Columbus, Ohio was just awarded his purple belt from Jeff Hudson (Relson Association Brown Belt). You may remember Joel from his killer pad and party pictures on this site. He hosted the Hawaii team at his house while we were up at the Relson Gracie US Nationals and also showed us the town. He comes down to Hawaii regularly to sharpen his skills and he is solid. Congratulations to our brother on a well earned promotion.

Not that he needs the extra line, but now he can use the purple belt promotion to pick up more girls...or use his new belt to beat the girls that have been chasing him around all the time. Luckily or unluckily, I don't have to worry about this problem (sniff, sniff).

One more thing, if he thinks he's going to avoid getting whipped like a dog just because he didn't get promoted in Hawaii, he is sadly mistaken. All the Hawaii boys that are in the "inner circle" gets "congratulated" in our own special way. Booohahahahaha!

Chute Box/Brazilian Top Team Scuffle

So What is next for Vanderlei, anyway?

There is always tension before a big event, as emotions and angst run high - this seems to rise as the event nears, and is always highest on the day of the event.

It seems that the CHUTE BOXE Team of Vanderlei Silva exchanged words with members of the Brazilian Top Team. The events happened prior to the recent PRIDE 16 event held in September. The Tokyo Hilton's buffet room was the scene, and apparently CHUTE BOXE was offended by some members of TOP TEAM taking pictures with the opponent of Assuerio Silva, Norihisa Yamamoto.

Later the same morning, the heat turned into a heated exchange of nasty looks and harsh words between Vanderlei and Ricardo Arona. The situation escalated as both men stood up - the managers of both teams calmed the situation down with a lot of smooth talking.

Reportedly, the situation was serious enough to worry PRIDE's people. The Japanese culture frowns upon confrontations (especially at buffets), however with a serious incident avoided, PRIDE officials may put this one in a ring at some point down the line!

Update on the Wrestling World Championships

Even though this is not the best press for a Hawaii boy, a wise man once said, "Any press is good press." I believe this is the same St. Louis graduate, Troy Takahashi, that tore up the local wrestling circuit for at least the last two years. If it isn't, it is pretty weird that there is another Troy Takahashi wrestling on the mainland in college. Included is an short piece of Eddie Goldman's report on the Abu Dhabi page.

A TALK WITH U.S. FREESTYLE WRESTLING COACH KEVIN JACKSON ABOUT THE 2001 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND, JUST A LITTLE, MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

His days of glory wrestling on the mat and fighting in a cage are likely behind him. He has no doubt captured his last medal and won his last championship as a competitor. But if you think that this means that he is sitting in a rocking chair or in front of a keyboard somewhere ruminating about the good ole days, think again.

Olympic gold medalist, two-time freestyle wrestling world champion, and pioneering mixed martial arts star Kevin Jackson can still be found near a mat. This time, however, you can locate him next to it, as the U.S. National Freestyle Team coach, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

This is a very busy time for Kevin Jackson as he prepares the U.S. team for the 2001 Freestyle Wrestling World Championships, to be held Nov. 22-25 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He has helped train the eight wrestlers that comprise that squad, and he is very hopeful that their return trip from Bulgaria will have more than one of them loaded down with some medals, like in gold, silver, and bronze.

This is the U.S. men's freestyle wrestling team:

STEPHEN ABAS 54 kg/119 lbs.
ERIC GUERRERO 58 kg/127.75 lbs.
BILL ZADICK 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
CHRIS BONO 69 kg/152 lbs.
JOE WILLIAMS 76 kg/167.5 lbs.
BRANDON EGGUM 85 kg/187.25 lbs.

Traveling to Bulgaria to compete in an event that had originally been scheduled for New York has had both its good and bad effects. "Without a doubt, anytime we wrestle in the United States or close to the United States, we do quite well," he said by phone. Indeed, the U.S. freestyle team took top honors in Toronto in 1993 and in Atlanta in 1995. Forays to Turkey in 1994, Russia in 1997, Iran in 1998, and Turkey again in 1999 proved less successful.

"So we were a little disappointed initially when the postponement was made, then when it was moved to another location," Kevin said. But then, there was another side to this delay. "What it's allowed us to do" he went on, "is spend more time together, them out in Colorado Springs, where they spent over four weeks training for the World Championships. We spent more time than any other world team or Olympic team." Thus the extra time "actually helped a few of our guys get stronger, improve in some technical areas, and also heal a couple of little injuries that we might have had with our guys."

Despite the fact that the only U.S. freestyle wrestling gold medalist at last year's Olympics, Brandon Slay, is sitting out this year and possibly retiring, and that other former world champions like Sammie Henson and world medalists like Cary Kolat and Lincoln McIlravy are also not competing this year, Kevin is very optimistic about the U.S. team's prospects.

CAN COLLEGE PHENOM STEPHEN ABAS WIN ON A WORLD LEVEL THIS YEAR?

"We have a great lightweight in Stephen Abas, taking over from Sammie Henson," Kevin said. "Sammie was our world champion [in 1998] and silver medalist in 2000, and we expect a lot of Stephen. He's a young man, but he's really seasoned. He's a junior world champion and we're expecting a lot out of him also."

Abas was 34-0 last season at Fresno State and won the 2001 NCAA national championship at 125 pounds. He still is wrestling as a senior at Fresno State this season, but, Kevin said, "I think right now he's totally focused on the freestyle." Kevin did say that Stephen would take a few days off from preparing for the World Championships to wrestle in some dual meets, which he did splendidly. On Nov. 10, he pinned Menlo College's Troy Takahashi in 2 minutes 35 seconds, and later that day pinned Navy's Sam Gray in 1 minute 16 seconds.

"So he is wrestling both," Kevin said. But that hasn't hurt his freestyle exploits one bit. "He just won the Sunkist International. He beat Alexis Vila, former world champion from Cuba, pretty handily, 4-0. And so really I think the freestyle and working with the world team and training with guys at a higher level than he was currently, actually makes him a better collegiate wrestler and actually prepares him even moreso for things that he will face on a collegiate level. He knows how to wrestle. He knows how to ride. He knows how to escape. Those are the only things that we're lacking on the freestyle level, is riding and escaping. So he can adapt to that very easily and pretty quickly. Actually, he's going to step down from the world class level to the collegiate level."

Nor has this double duty hindered his training for Bulgaria. "Stephen's made every training camp. Hs missed very few days because of school or competition. We've worked with his schedule and around his schedule. And definitely he is a star that's going to be on the rise. And if he happens to medal at the World Championships, and goes on to be the NCAA champion, I would expect him to be voted the Danny Hodge Award." That award is given by WIN (Wrestling International Newsmagazine) to the top college wrestler of the year, similar to the Heisman Trophy in football.
