Quote of the Day

If there is one thing upon this earth that mankind love and admire better than another, it is a brave man, -- it is the man who dares to look the devil in the face and tell him he is a devil.

~James A. Garfield, 1831-1881, Twentieth President of the USA

Baret Yoshida Inteview

Check out the interview with Baret after Abu Dhabi on the Abu Dhabi Site. Baret is definitely more confident in himself and should be after a great performance. Not so good editing, but the content is pretty good.

Baret Yoshida: Post Fight ADCC INTERVIEW

Fresh after interviewing Royler Gracie, ace reporters Rafiel Torre and Carl Fisher, corner runner up Baret Yoshida to get his side of the story…

This is your third time here in Abu Dhabi now? Yes that’s right?

Looks like you had a bit of an altercation with Royler before you fought when you beat Soca? What did you say to him? ‘I’m coming for you Royler, you’re next’; he was fighting Robson Moura at the time.

What did you think of your fight Baret? I think he just ran away the whole fight and he did not want to fight me.

Do you think he feared you more than last year? Yes I do; last year he had no respect for me but I think he had some this year.

What did you think of the rules? I think there’s something wrong with the rules when you can run away in a fight and then become a world champion. I should be the world champion.

Every time you tried a submission on him he got up and walked away. Was that frustrating for you? Yes very; I am the one who took all the shots and went for zero submissions the entire fight. He tried to pass my guard a little bit but I gave him the fight because of the negative points. I was very aggressive and bound to make mistakes.

There are two people that are a threat to Royler right now; yourself and your team mate B J Penn – would you agree? Yes I think BJ is much bigger than me and BJ will beat him and take him down. I will fight him the exact way if I had to fight him again – I would not change anything. I know deep down in my heart I am the number one guy.

Do you think you will win it next year? I don’t know; it’s always a gamble – every time you roll the dice it’s different.

Would you fight Royler in an NHB match? If the fight is there I’ll fight him NHB

How’s the Shooto going in Japan? The Japanese are tough man. NHB is a little different from the submissions but I enjoy fighting in Japan and I’ve been living there for two months with Enson Inoue. I train with Enson and I have been visiting the schools one at a time. There’s a lot of new guys with new styles out there and I am learning a lot.

Who in Japan in the Shoot organization impresses you the most? Sakurai.

Have you trained with him? In 1999, but not recently.

How long do you plan to stay in Japan? I don’t know; one day Enson phoned me and said do you want to train in Japan and I said yes, so I’m just going with the flow. There’s a lot more guys my size to train with.

Where you at Pride when Egan fought? Yes I was. Egan had not fought all year when he went up against Guy Metzger and he got caught you know. Everybody are friends after they fight over here it’s just business for them you know.

Have you been accepted by the Japanese? Have you a good fan base? I don’t know I hope so (laughs). I’m not Sato or Sakurai but who knows (laughs)

What are your thoughts on the new Pride rules and the fight with Sakuraba and Silva? The new rules makes a lot more action and is a little dangerous and a lot of people may get hurt from the rules but it will provide more action. If the money is there I would fight under the new rules.

Have you enjoyed your stay here? Yes I have – me and Egan are staying here a while longer. The prince was impressed with Egan’s stamina and he wants to work out with him. The guy has incredible stamina man. Before I trained with him I used to eat all kinds if shit and just train ju jitsu to get into shape, but now I do sprints and swim and lots of cardio work prior to a fight.

Baret it was a pleasure to interview you. No problem.

Head injuries prompt wrestling gear recall

April 27, 2001

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Sixty thousand ear guards used in wrestling are being recalled due to reports of head and ear injuries associated with their use.

The plastic protective shell of the ASIC Gel Wrestling Ear Guard with Neoprene "can break when it is hit against a hard surface, resulting in impact injuries to the wrestler's head," explain officials at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

So far the manufacturer, ASICS TIGER Corp. of Irvine, California, has received 10 reports of broken guards, with three reports of injuries, including cuts and abrasions to the head and ear.

The guards under recall sold for about $25 at sport stores and in sports equipment catalogs. They are made in a variety of colors, with the ASICS red logo inscribed on a label on the guard strap. Date codes are written on the outer rim of the ear piece; recalled ear guards have date codes beginning with either "98" or "99."

According to the CPSC, "consumers should stop using these ear guards immediately, and return them to the store where purchased or to the firm for a free replacement." ASICS can be reached toll-free at (888)-380-8222, or via the Web at www.asicstiger.com.

A photo of the guard under recall can be viewed at www.cpsc.gov.

So that's why all you wrestlers got nasty looking ears...faulty equipment!

Malcolm Ahlo in Hawaii Fishing News

Relson Gracie Aiea Academy's big man, Malcolm "The Avalanche" Ahlo is featured for capturing a new state record. No it ain't in powerlifting, this time it is for Omilu Ula. For you non-blala's out there, that is a fish and it's official weight was 22.88lbs. It is in the May 2001 issue that we just received. We will try to get the actual article, that Malcolm wrote himself, on this site. It is an extremely great article, very well written, maybe he is going to go into journalism next...probably not. Well if he does, he will have to get rid of his "deer in the headlights" poses in both pictures.

Check it out at certain newsstands or ask a fisherman. It seems like every fisherman subscribes to this.

AIDS Update in Brazil

We all know that Brazil has some of the hottest babes on the planet, but when in Brazil, don't necessarily do as the Brazilians do. Be careful, very careful. This story was featured on an e-newsletter from healthcentral.com. Check it out.

BRASILIA, 25 (Reuters) - Brazil, known for its aggressive campaign against AIDS, plans to enlist the pornographic film industry in the cause by requiring erotic films to carry a safe-sex message.

Under legislation awaiting final approval in Congress, all pornographic films for sale or rental in Brazil would need to carry a five-second opening message advising the use of a condom during sexual intercourse.

"Our objective was to alert the population to the importance of using the condom," said Celio de Mello, chief adviser to Deputy Fernando Goncalves, a sponsor of the bill.

"We wanted people to be well-informed when watching films with a sexual appeal," de Mello said on Tuesday, expressing confidence the measure would be approved.

Brazil has become a model in the AIDS fight, thanks to extensive precautionary advertising and a policy of distributing free anti-AIDS drugs. The nation of about 170 million people slashed AIDS deaths to 24.8% of the infected population in 1999 from 73.7% in 1990.

In absolute numbers, Latin America's largest country suffers from a high rate of AIDS infection, with 200,000 registered cases of HIV, and estimates of up to 540,000 total cases.

But only 0.6% of the adult population is infected, compared with an estimated 36% in Botswana, which has the world's highest rate.

The measure has been approved by the Chamber of Deputies and two Senate committees. The date for a full Senate vote has not yet been set.

O'ahu private schools enter judo ring for first time

Advertiser Staff

Judo is an Interscholastic League of Honolulu sport for the first time this season.

Nine teams are participating from four private schools plus Pac-Five, the ILH's unique conglomerate of small schools.

Girls teams are 'Iolani, Kamehameha, Pac-Five and Punahou.

Boys teams are 'Iolani, Kamehameha, Pac-Five, Punahou, and St. Louis.

Season-opening dual meets last week included Pac-Five's 50-40 overtime victory over St. Louis, which has some players from its state championship boys wrestling team.

Sophomore Jonathan Spiker, 18-time national age-group judo champion for Shobukan who is 76-0 in two years of high-school wrestling, leads St. Louis. Prince Brown, football running back and state wrestling champion, returned to judo after a several-year absence when St. Louis formed a team. He was a national champion as a sixth-grader — five years and 70 pounds ago.

Jansen Fukuda, another two-time state wrestling champion and national judo veteran, leads Pac-Five.

Punahou is led by Jeremy Otani, who qualified for Junior Nationals last year.

Coaches are Kamehameha's Mike Tanimoto, a former USA Judo National Team member; Pac-Five's Jerome Fukuda; Punahou's Kendrick Kakazu, a former Junior National judo champion and Michigan State wrestler; St. Louis's Lionel Shiroma; and 'Iolani's Neal Takamoto.

Jennifer Miyahira of Mid-Pacific and Pac-Five was the girls wrestler of the year in the ILH in 2000.

A state high school judo championship could be sanctioned in the near future. Sponsorship of three leagues is required. The public-school O'ahu Interscholastic Association has sponsored judo for many years. Several Big Island high schools are competing in club judo this year, Takamoto said. If they organized an official league, there would be three.

Hawai'i Judo Inc. and its president, Kevin Asano, a 1988 Olympic silver medallist, is serving as a liaison and guide for the high school leagues, Takamoto said.

St. Louis Wrestler Travis Lee possibly headed for the Olympics?

Star-Bulletin staff

Lee to train at
Olympic team facility
The St. Louis School wrestler
is one of some 30 nationwide
who will attend for free

Three-time state wrestling champion Travis Lee of St. Louis School has been selected to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center this July in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Lee, who finished fifth at the national high school senior tournament earlier this month, is one of some 30 elite wrestlers who will have their room and board paid for by USA Wrestling during the July 1-8 developmental camp.

"I'm very excited about it," said Lee, who has verbally committed to Cornell University. "The Olympics is a dream but I'm taking it one step at a time. First, I have to do well in college.

"Being at these (national competitions) and being with other top wrestlers gives you confidence and it brings your hopes up that you can compete at the high levels."

Lee's coach at St. Louis, Todd Los Banos, is confident that his wrestler can attain his lofty goals.

"Once Travis puts his mind to it, he's very focused," said Los Banos. "He thrives off top competition and rises to it."

"There are a number of people chosen to go to the training center, but not many have their way paid.''

Lee will compete at the Junior Nationals later in July. He earned all-American honors at the event last year.

Lee is ranked second nationally in Greco-Roman and fifth in freestyle at the 123-pound weight class.

Three in national wrestling tourney

State champions Cathy Migita (121 pounds) and Tanya Miyasaki (98) of Castle will compete in a national tournament in Las Vegas in April. Kristin Fujioka, who finished third at 103 pounds, is set to compete in a Michigan tournament. Migita and Fujioka both placed in Michigan last year.

Salud, Viloria on card
for fight at Convention
Center on May 15

By Paul Arnett
Star-Bulletin
April 25, 2001

The main event for the Tom Moffatt Productions Inc. boxing card on May 15 was given tentative approval yesterday by the Hawaii State Boxing Commission.

Former junior featherweight champion Jesus Salud faces Fernando "Bobby Boy" Verlardez in the 10-round main event of the five-fight card that includes Olympic boxers Brian Viloria of Waipahu and Jose Navarro of Los Angeles.

Moffatt told the commission that the fights will be held in the Hawaii Convention Center. The venue will seat 3,700 with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $100 for ringside seats.

Moffatt said the bouts would be shown on ESPN2 and that the card would begin at 3 p.m.

"Jesus has always been a good draw here," Moffatt said. "Adding Brian to the card for his first professional bout is also big for Hawaii boxing fans. We're excited about being back in the fight business."

Viloria's opponent for his first professional bout is still unknown. The proposed flyweight fight is set for four rounds. Navarro doesn't know his opponent yet, either, but because he already has three pro fights, the junior bantamweight from California will have a scheduled six-round fight.

Rounding out the card are two women's fights. The first is a four-round bantamweight match between Trena Drotar of Canada and Roberta Bald Eagle from Las Vegas.

There is also a 10-round junior middleweight bout between Ann Wolfe of Austin, Texas, and Lisa Ested of Richmond, Va. The commission reviewed these two women's bouts, but wanted more information from Moffatt before giving its approval. The next commission meeting is in two weeks.

Paint Ball a Success

About 15 guys showed up to play painball at the Sand Island/Nimitz Hwy field yesterday and everyone had a great time. Some of the Jiu-Jitsu guys came with killer guns that seemed to shoot twice as far as the rental guns, but the teams were pretty evenly split. We all found out that Fredson is also a black belt in paint ball because he was a terror on the field. He may have done a stint on the Amazon Brazilian Army or something. We plan on having another paint ball outing in a month or so.

Warrior's III NHB Show on Maui

BJJ Black Belt, Romolo Barros and partner Lee are putting on another mixed martial arts show on Maui on May 12, 2001. Some names being mentioned for the event are Augie Padaken, Kim Morishita (purple belt here on Maui), J.R. Palmer, Ricardo Barros (BJJ brown belt), as well as a
few amateurs from Maui, and a couple of Haru Shimanishi's HMC fighters. More details to follow.

All State Wrestlers

Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu students Emile and Rene Suehiro both made All State OIA East in wrestling. Emile made it in the 119 lb class and Rene in the 140 lb class and both go to McKinley High School. Congratulations to both guys! They are listed in the Honolulu Advertiser on Thursday, April 19, 2001.

Former Aiea Student Aaron Bernal one of the officers shot at H-2 Freeway shooting

HPD officer and former Aiea student, Aaron Bernal's face was grazed on side of his face by some birdshot from the shotgun blasts when he and another officer tried to apprehend the car theives on the H-2 Freeway, near Waipio Uka blvd. Aaron's name was release on News 4 and was in yesterday's Honolulu Advertiser.

We wish Aaron a speedy recovery and want to take this time to remind everyone that HPD officers are out there risking their lives for every one of us, every single day. There are many HPD officers that belong to our Jiu-Jitsu family, but ALL OF THEM, are out there protecting our families.

More background of the cancellation of the Matyushenko-Vitale fight at UCC4

This was recently released from the promoter of the UCC as the reason the Matyushenko-Vitale fight was cancelled from UCC4.

UCC 4 undercard superfight MATYUSHENKO/VITALE off...
After several weeks of negotiations, the Universal Combat Challenge (UCC) had an agreement with the RAW TEAM to have Vladimir Matyushenko return to MMA competition after a long layoff. These plans have now been hampered by an apparent delay in the team receiving Matyushenko's Visa from the U.S. Government. According to the RAW TEAM CEO, Lou Chipparelli, these papers are over three weeks late and have also prevented Matyushenko to participate in this year's Abu Dhabi competition. The UCC was not informed of this ongoing visa situation prior to the bout being negotiated, agreed and announced nor does the UCC make a practice of negotiating with fighters who are unable to appear at our UCC events

Looking for Sponsors

Kendall Goo of Gracie Kauai is looking for sponsors for his upcoming tournament on June 9 on Kauai. Todd Tanaka, manager of the Relson Gracie Academy, is also looking for sponsors for our upcoming State Tournament on June 16 on Oahu. If you know of any company that would be interested in helping either of these tournaments out please email us and we will pass on the information. The more sponsors, the cheaper the entrance fee, the cheaper the entrance fee, the more competitors, the more competitors, the better Hawaii Jiu-Jitsu gets.

Kauai Open

Kendall Goo of Gracie Kauai is putting on a grappling tournament on June 9th as a warm-up for the State Tournament which is scheduled for the next weekend on June 16th. It is going to be held at Kilauea Gym on the North Shore of Kauai. Email Kendall for details. The tournament will be grouped with a big Kajukembo event so hopefully some other martial artists will be pulled in to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There has been some interest in the Longman and Kamole camp who are very big rivals of each other on Kauai. Kendall is also planning a no-gi division as well. More details as they come in. If anyone on Kauai has mats that Kendall can borrow for the event, please contact him ASAP. He is desperately looking for mats and they seem to be very rare on Kauai. Help a brother out.

Jiu-Jitsu Paintball!

This Sunday, April 22, all the Jiu-Jitsu guys are going to Nimitz Hwy field to play paintball. The time is tentatively set for 10:00 AM. Call Todd at the academy (589-2524) to sign up. We need at least twenty guys to reserve the entire field to ourselves. Make sure you come.

Congratulations Kendall!

Seeing that it is easter and people seem to be more fertile at this time of the year...Kendall Goo has just welcomed his first son, Keegan Goo, in to this world. He weighed in at 7 lbs 10 oz which makes him a huge baby even by today's standards, but when you take a look at Kendall, you would probably expect a huge baby. According to his Uncle Eric, Keegan already had his first choke... by his umbilical cord. He held on and escaped the choke and is doing fine. He enters this weird world 1-0 already and seems to be following in his Dad's footsteps. At the rate that Kendall is pumping those babies out, they may have to keep him and his wife in different rooms.

Various Rumors

Sources that be are trying to set up a black belt superfight between Fredson Alves (Gracie Humaita/Royler) and Leo Nyza (Nova Uniao). Both are killer Jiu-Jitsu competitors and it would be great for the local fans and students to see such a high level of Jiu-Jitsu with their own eyes. Nyza beat Fredson by advantage in 96' and Fredson choked Nyza in competition recently (not sure which tournament). That makes it 1-1. I hope this match happens.

NAGA is supposed to return to Hawaii on September 22. NHB stars Jeremy Horn an Matt Hughes are talking about coming down for the event.

Relson Gracie Purple Belt, Kendall Goo has been offered a submission match in Brennan Kamaka's upcoming Warrior's Quest event. His proposed opponent is not know at this point.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter to everyone. Get a good rest because I have a feeling that it will be a long week.

Abu Dhabi Notes

Royler beat Baret by the score of -1 to -5. The reports say that Royler controlled the entire match, but I will wait until I see the match with my own eyes until I agree with that statement. Last year, they stated the same thing, but Baret was an animal and gave Royler all he could handle.

Saulo lost to Kikuta by a guard pass. Kikuta must be a monster on the ground.

The absolute saw Jean-Jacques Machado tear up the competition even though he was the smallest competitor. Machado submitted Kanehara by armbar, Pe de Pano by footlock, and Cachorrao Almeida by points to reach the final. Arona defeated Neff by kneebar and Saulo and Belfort by points to face Machado. It seems that Arona beat Machado by 3 points, but had to eat a killer omoplata to win.

Kerr and Sperry included Sperry almost knee barring Kerr and Kerr almost (or maybe actually) putting Sperry to sleep with a guillotine.

Lincoln leaving for IFC on Monday

I spoke with Lincoln Tyler of the Relson Gracie Academy last night and he said that he will be flying out of Hawaii on Monday on his way to California to fight on Wednesday at the IFC.

Good luck Lincoln.
