April 2001 News Part 1

 4/15/01

Happy Easter

Happy Easter to everyone. Get a good rest because I have a feeling that it will be a long week.

Abu Dhabi Notes

Royler beat Baret by the score of -1 to -5. The reports say that Royler controlled the entire match, but I will wait until I see the match with my own eyes until I agree with that statement. Last year, they stated the same thing, but Baret was an animal and gave Royler all he could handle.

Saulo lost to Kikuta by a guard pass. Kikuta must be a monster on the ground.

The absolute saw Jean-Jacques Machado tear up the competition even though he was the smallest competitor. Machado submitted Kanehara by armbar, Pe de Pano by footlock, and Cachorrao Almeida by points to reach the final. Arona defeated Neff by kneebar and Saulo and Belfort by points to face Machado. It seems that Arona beat Machado by 3 points, but had to eat a killer omoplata to win.

Kerr and Sperry included Sperry almost knee barring Kerr and Kerr almost (or maybe actually) putting Sperry to sleep with a guillotine.

Hunter's breaking free from the Joint!

Momma Kristin just sent word that Hunter has been given the green light and he will be coming home today. Hunter is up to 4lbs 9ounces and gaining fast. Word has it that Neal hasn't stopped sweating. You see, sooner or later Neal will have to change one of those "small packages" as they say in the wrassling world. I can't wait! You can run, but you can't hide Mr. Pimp Papa.

Whoooohoooo!

Niko Vitale out of UCC4

The search is on for a new opponent for Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko. I just spoke with Niko Vitale and he informed me that he pulled out of the match against rAw team member, Vladdy Matyushenko at the UCC4, scheduled for May 12th. This match was supposed to be for the vacant UCC World Light Heavyweight Championship. Vitale said that he has been busy with his regular full-time job and has not had time to train at all. Vitale's instructor, Egan Inoue, also recommended that he not take this fight because Vitale has not been able to train on a regular basis.

Mark "The Specimen" Kerr
defeats
Mario "The Zen Machine" Sperry
0 to -1

It was rumored that Sperry went to guard in order to eliminate Kerr from taking him down. According to Abu Dhabi rules, a point was taken away from Sperry for doing this. Kerr made some supposed weak pass attempts, while Sperry actively sought leg locks or sweeps. Kerr took the conservative win and who can blame him for that kind of money. A lot of naysayers are dogging Kerr, but I seem to remember a fairly uneventful and conservative match that Sperry once had with Enson Inoue...

What comes around, goes around my friend.

BTW, we are BJJ guys and would have loved for Sperry to win, but we are talking about cold hard cash. A lot more cash than I make in a year.

St. Louis School sophomore Jonathan Spiker won the 145-pound championship in his age group Sunday at the fourth Reno World of Wrestling Championships.

Spiker, 15, won seven matches in the 92-entry, 15-16 age bracket. He defeated Utah state champion Zack Elliott 2-1 in overtime in what was described as a grueling, bloody championship match.

Nearly 2,400 wrestlers from 33 states competed in the age-group tournament at the Reno (Nev.) Convention Center.

Spiker has won the past two Hawai'i high school 145-pound championships and has a 76-0 record in Hawai'i [Webmaster note: Actually, he won the 130-pound class as a Freshman and the 145-pound class as a Sophmore]. He also owns 18 national judo titles.

"It was the most challenging competition I've been in," said Spiker, who took up wrestling in the seventh grade.

Kamehameha athletic director Blane Gaison said Spiker "was a joy to watch. He did an excellent, unbelievable job."

Daniel Morita of Kahuku took second place in the 12-and-under, 100-pound division.

Three wrestlers from the Kamehameha Schools participated but did not reach the championship rounds. They were Carden Vincent, the state's 189-pound champion; Dallas Kia, 135-pound state runner-up, and Ryan Wong, who finished third at state at 125.

We are going to try and refocus our efforts and get back on course to the goal of this page, which is to report Martial Arts news that happens in Hawaii or involves Hawaiian martial artists. If you have anything to contribute, please email it to us.

Relson Gracie Academy Closed Today

Because it's Good Friday, the academy will be closed today. Make sure that you don't show up down there because no one will be there. If you read this message late, you should check our page more often.

Paint Ball

On Sunday, April 22 all the Relson Gracie students are invited to play paintball at the Nimitz field. Call Rex to sign up so we know how many guys will be showing up (Call the main academy to get Rex's cell number, 589-2524). If we have 20 guys, we will have the field to ourselves. This will be the second time all the Jiu-Jitsu guys get together to play paint ball and it was a blast last time.

Directions:
Take H-1 east and take the Nimitz Hwy cut off to go under the viaduct.
Just as you come out from being under the viaduct (staying on Nimitz Hwy), take the dirt road right after the Veterans recreation/convention center.

Saulo may be coming to Hawaii

Saulo Riberio may be stopping in Hawaii for two weeks on his way back from Abu Dhabi. As reported earlier today, Saulo is in the finals in Abu Dhabi as we speak. Along with being the defending Abu Dhabi champion, he is also a five-time BJJ black belt world champion and Royler Gracie black belt. Last time he came, he showed us killer techniques and with Fredson in town, moves should be plentiful. More details and confirmation will hopefully follow soon.

Pan Am Jiu-Jitsu Tournament

This past weekend the Pan Am's, which is the most prestigious BJJ tournament on American soil, took place. As reported on the FCF website, Margarida submitted all of his opponents and took his weight class. What was of importance was that Margarida choked multiple-time World Champion Fabio Gurgel. This is the first time Gurgel has been submitted in competition. Daniel Moraes who was staying here in Hawaii won the brown belt leve weight and Five-Time World Champion, Saulo Riberio's little brother, Alexandre, took third in his weight and first in the absolute. American black belt Garth Taylor from Claudio Franca's took second to Macaco. Relson is bringing home three trophies, two thirds and one second. I'm not sure of the divisions, but we'll post it when we get it.

Abu Dhabi Keys are In

There are some interesting match-ups this year. Check out the Abu Dhabi page for the rest of the keys. I have only listed the first two catagories because these are usually the best to watch.

Under 65 kg Weight Class

 Sequence

Fighter A

Fighter B

 1
 Royler Gracie

vs.
Martin Brown

 2
 Mitsuoki Hirai

vs.
Mike Cardoso

3

 4
 Robson Moura Fonseca

 vs.
 Hiroyuki Abe

 5
 Gustavo Dantas

 vs.
 Naoya Uematsu

 7
 Alexandre 'Soca'

 vs.
 Yoshinori Konishi

 8
 Takumo Yano

 vs.
 Konstantin Vrachez

One interesting match-up is Gustavo Dantas from Nova Uniao (1997 Purple belt & 1998 Brown belt World BJJ Champion) versus Hawaii's Baret Yoshida. Gustavo has been out of competition for a while now since he has moved to Arizona. Baret is just coming off second place at the Japan Combat Wrestling Championships and last year's amazing match with defending champ, Royler Gracie. Guys to watch in this weight class include, Royler, Joey Gilbert, Robson Moura, Baret Yoshida, and Soca. Uematsu may be a force if he can handle the heavier opponents. He normally fights at a lower weight class.

66 kg to 76 kg Weight Class

 Sequence

Fighter A

Fighter B

 1
 Genki Sudo

vs.
Rodrigo Gracie

 2
 Gavin Kulper

 6
 Leo Vieira

 vs.
 Morris Clifoni

 7
 Serguei Onishuk

 vs.
 Jean Jacques Machado

 8
 Matt Serra

 vs.
 Takanori Gomi

Rodrigo Gracie, Abu Dhabi 1998 champ, returns to action to see if he can re-claim his title. Fernando Vasconcelos faces Kaoru Uno in probably the best match up of the first round. Leo Santo against Kato would have to be a close second. Genki Sudo who had an impressive showing in a fight against Andre Pederneira faces Rodrigo which should be a great match as well. There are too many fighters to list as far as favorites. This is probably the best class.

In the higher weight classes, Saulo will have his hands full with Travis Lutter who is listed at a BJJ guy, but is also a great wrestler. There could be an upset. If Saulo continues, there could be a match between him and Nino which would be a great match up. Another intertesting match up is Tom Erikson versus Roberto Traven. Traven has been called the best guard in Brazil for a while and Erikson is a world class monster sized wrestler. BJJ Black belt phenom, Pe de Pano faces Mike Van Arsdale in another guard against top game. It will be interesting to see if Pe de Pano can continue his incredible win streak.

The Superfight is Mario Sperry versus Mark Kerr which should be an interesting battle because Sperry is known as a top BJJ player and he will probably not be able to take down Kerr. We will see how good Sperry is on his back.

Quote of the Day

"All greatness is achieved while performing outside your comfort zone."
Greg Arnold

Fredson is ripping through the Relson Gracie Academy

We are extremely lucky to have BJJ black belt, Fredson Alves training and teaching at the Relson Gracie Main Academy. He is a featherweight (around 147lbs), but he is tearing through our toughest guys. I did not think that a little guy would be able to do that. If you have not gotten a chance, come to the main academy and take a class and hopefully feel what an extremely technical black belt feels like.

Hint: Call the academy at 589-2524 before coming down. You have to remember that the dude's on vacation.

Lincoln leaving for IFC on Monday

I spoke with Lincoln Tyler of the Relson Gracie Academy last night and he said that he will be flying out of Hawaii on Monday on his way to California to fight on Wednesday at the IFC.

Good luck Lincoln.

 4/6/01

Quote of the Day

This quote was submitted by Eric Goo, but he forgot who said it:

"Endurance begins when your opponent stops and you are competing with yourself"

IFC Update

According to a friend of Lincoln, he is fighting Caleb Mitchell from Cesar Gracie's school. Of course, Relson did not want Lincoln to fight one of his cousin's students, but it seems that the promoter has put Lincoln in a fight or nothing kind of offer. In order for Lincoln to get a title shot, he has to fight Mitchell.

Mixed Martial Arts Gains Ground

After a big meeting with the NJ boxing commission, it seems that the commission is accepting and even supporting MMA with modified rules. The overall rules does not change much other than the fighters cannot wear shoes or gis and cannot kick a downed opponent (recently allowed in Pride). They have also suggested nine separate weight classes instead of the present four classes. Below are the proposed weight classes:

Flyweight under 125lbs
Bantamweight 125-134.9lbs
Featherweight 135-144.9lbs
Lightweight 145-154.9lbs
Welterweight 155-169.9lbs
Middleweight 170-184.9lbs
Light-Heavyweight 185-204.9lbs
Heavyweights 205-264.9lbs
Super-Heavyweight above 265lbs

Yup, there's a Super-Heavyweight division. Rumors say that professional boxing will add a Super-Heavyweight class in the future. Take a look at the Full Contact Fighter website for a full article on this subject.

Shane Agena in Japanese Mag

While browsing through a Japanese fight magazine, we came upon this picture of a guy who looks mysteriously like a one stripe purple belt that trains at Relson's. He even stands like Shane.

Bobby Hoffman Tapes

I say this on the Abu Dhabi page and thought this was funny. If you don't know who Bobby Hoffman is, he's a brute of a man that knocks guys out left and right. He fought in the Superbrawl Heavyweight 8 man tournament. Heath Herring, who is now one of the best heavyweights out there, got him in a kimura (chicken wing) and tore his shoulder. Hoffman wouldn't tap and kept on fighting. He is one tough fighter. Check this out.

THE MARKETING OF BOBBY HOFFMAN HAS BEGUN

8 Tape Instructional Tape Series gives you all you need!

Bobby Hoffman becomes the first of the Iowa camp to produce an incredible instructional video series that really teaches how to fight "Iowa Style".

TAPE 1: Diet and Conditioning - This tape is about lifting cows first, and then eating them.. "Iowa Beef, 100% beef. That is all I eat" says Bobby.
TAPE 2: Upper Body Submissions 1 - "I believe if you can squeeze your opponent's head, you can get him to submit." Learn the fine points of head squeezing.
TAPE 3: Upper Body Submissions 2: Bobby reveals never before head squeezing techniques that will allow you to finish a fight at any time.
TAPE 4: Upper Body Submissions 3: Transitioning into head squeezing finishes is one of the most important techniques Bobby can pass on. "You have to bull rush and hug. Then you isolate and squeeze the head. I will show you how".
TAPE 5: Lower Body Submissions: Learn to isolate the foot, and take it. "The foot has nerves leading to all parts of the body. If you squeeze the foot correctly, you can kill a man." Learn from the best.
TAPE 6: Wrestling and Takedowns. "I have been wrestling steers since I was eight years old. If you can wrestle a full grown bull down, you can take a man down. Then you squeeze." The wisdom of Hoffman.
TAPE 7: Striking - "Don't squeeze, use you fists as a cudgel and bludgeon. It is important to take shots too, just bludgeon them more".
TAPE 8: Ring Attitude - "Never quit. They must kill you. Your mission is to bludgeon and look ugly." Hoffman is a master of the psyche game - Hoffman is a 9th Dan in the art of brawling - learn to summon the will to win from deep inside as only Hoffman can teach.
Order the entire set right now!

Update on the little guy

I called the artist formerly known as "Pimp Daddy" Sunday. Who has dropped part of his formal title to join the likes of Madonna, Cher, and Prince. He is now known as just Dad. Neal Tomimatsu says that Hunter is getting a lot stronger than expected, but Hunter will still have to settle on chasing nurses for two weeks or so.

I am going to plan on visiting him sometime this week to confirm or deny the rumor that he was born with cauliflower ears (also known as "Wrassler's ears"). Neal says that he will be at class on Tuesday.

We are keeping little Hunter in our prayers, but are not sure if we should be praying for him or those nurses...

Chris
