We leave for the Windy City

Mike, Chris, Rex and Kaleo leave today for Chicago to spend a week with their significant others checking out the town. Local boy, Eric Moon is promoting the Ironheart Crown on Nov. 4th, which Chris and Mike will be covering for Full Contact Fighter.

We apologize that we will probably be having too much fun to update the page until we get back on Nov. 5th.

Chris Onzuka gets his Brown Belt

Relson Gracie awarded Chris with his brown belt, Chris has been a purple belt for about 6 years alone, which is longer most people in the Relson Gracie academy or any other academy have been training for. Chris got the ceremonial whipping (thanks for the idea Steve, John & Andre) from the main academy on Friday night, when he received his brown belt and the Aiea Academy students showed their love for him by whipping the crap out of him on Tuesday and Thursday.

Chris & Mike are approaching 9 years of training in BJJ.

When we get back, we will post some pictures of my raw back after Thursday's bare back whipping for you sick people out there.

Super Brawl, Extreme Challenge
to battle in Honolulu

While promoters often seem to have trouble getting along, T.Jay Thompson of Future Brawl and Monte Cox of Extreme Challenge are exceptions to the rule.
On Nov. 14, the two will co-promote the Xtreme Showdown at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. The event will pit up-and-coming stars from the two events against each other.
"We've been friends for quite a few years now, and have gone to each others shows and shared secrets and ways to be successful," Thompson said. "We've talked about doing another show together for some time and basically, I made a phone call and worked everything out in a couple minutes."
The main event of the 10-bout card will feature Niko Vitale of the Jesus is Lord gym against Mark Hughes of Miletich Martial Arts. Both fighters have done well in the middleweight division and are looking to move up to bigger events, like the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
"This show will feature at least 10 guys who have fared very well in their respective events and are looking for more exposure and a chance to step up to bigger shows," Cox said. "Unless you're a real diehard fan, you might not know some of the names... but you will be hearing the names very soon, we have some young, really talented guys in the show."
Other featured bouts include John Allessio (Shark Tank) against Joe Doerksen (Team Extreme). Allessio fought Pat Miletich for the UFC lightweight title, while Doerksen's only losses are to UFC stars Matt Hughes and Eugene Jackson.
Josh Hall (Shark Tank) will face Rick Gravesen (Miletich Martial Arts). Hall finished 4th in the Olympic Trials in Greco Roman wrestling, while Gravesen has almost 30 fights around the Midwest.
Also... John Chrisostomo (GU Hawaii) will face Jason Black (Miletich Martial Arts) and Victor Hunsaker (Shark Tank) will battle Drew Irion (Miletich Martial Arts).
"This show has a lot of interesting matchups," Thompson said. "We're going to keep a team score and at the end of the night, one promoter is going to owe the other promoter something big... you know, like politicians do for the World Series."
The bet between promoters hasn't been made yet, but Cox said it will probably involve a tractor and a surf board.
"You know, I really need a surf board... most people don't know it, but Iowa is among the top surfing states in the mainland," Cox said. "I admit we don't have the big waves that Hawaii has, but we have some big ponds."
The show will start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $25 in advance for general admission ($29 day of show) and $50 for ringside.

Relson Gracie International Tournament Completed!

Another International Tournament is history with Team Relson taking first place once again. There were many hard fought victories and great match-ups. With the modified rules of a 10 minute time limit for white belts and 12 minutes for blue belts and above, conditioning and heart was a requirement. There was a mixture submission and point victories. The matches could be ended by the time limit, first to hit 12 points, or submission.

Some of the standouts were Harris Brumer from the Relson's main academy and Keone from Gracie Kauai who went first and second, respectively in the absolute white belt. Harris took his weight class and Keone made it to the semi-finals in his weight class. Staying with the Keone trend, Keone Gaspar took his weight and the absolute blue and got promoted to purple belt (thank god because he was making the higher belts look bad for quite a while now). Jason McCormick from Brazilian Freestyle took second in the open and took first in his weight class. This guy is a terror and gives everyone the fight of their life. Relson's purple belts (Lionel Perez, Kimo Kries, and Kendall Goo) ended up taking the top four places in the absolute and flipped coins to determine the two champions. Another purple belt who is always very technical and was very impressive today was Nova Uniao Hilo's John Holt. He beat two very tough Kauai Longman purple belts to take his weight class.

Lionel Perez from the Relson Gracie Jacksonville affiliate arrives in Hawaii

Lionel Perez, a purple belt, who took over the Jacksonville, Florida affiliate academy, when brown belt Scott Devine moved north, just arrived in Hawaii. This was Lionel's second trip to Hawaii and this time he brought his brother and a friend along for the ride. We are happy to have so many visitors here and you can be sure we will find out if there are any new techniques floating around the Florida area.

Relson Gracie Team wins the Hawaiian Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament

Brazilian Freestyle Jiu-Jitsu held the Hawaiian Open this past Saturday (10/7). There were not many competitors but there was some great fights. BFJJ also added a no gi division that day, which drummed up some interest. This allowed Shooto fighter, Baret Yoshida and 1997 Mundial Champ, Kendall Goo to have a rematch of a match that should have been called David versus Goliath. After it was all over, the 6'7" Goo won the decision over the very aggressive 5'6" Yoshida. Grappling Unlimited teammate, Anthony Torres submitted Goo with a rear choke in the finals.

The team rankings were as followed:
1st Place - Relson Gracie
2nd Place - Brazilian Freestyle Jiu-Jitsu
3rd Place - Nova Uniao

Steve Maxwell lands in Hawaii

Our friend from the land that brought us Rocky Balboa is on Oahu to spend two weeks training with Relson. The 2x Mundial & Pan American champ and owner & head instructor of Maxercise will be at Relson's main academy. We are going to put him to work, trying to coax him into teaching us all the tricks from the East coast.

NAGA Web Site Posts Story
on Hawaii NAGA Event

Kipp Kollar posted his adventures in Hawaii while he was "preparing" for the first NAGA tournament in Hawaii. Although from reading the story, he sure does have an interesting way of "preparing" for a tournament.

New Shooto Rankings In!

Hawaii A-Class Shooto Fighters Baret Yoshida and Stephen "Bozo" Paling has moved up in the rankings of the lightweight division. Baret is now ranked #4, while Bozo made a jump to #6. These two are making a big dent in the lightweight division after their impressive victories last month. Baret is scheduled to fight in early November (10?) and hopefully he can gain valuable experience and keep his championship climb intact.

Bozo's teammate Ron Jhun has also moved up to #6 in the light heavyweight class. With Ray "Bradda" Cooper being the number one ranked middleweight, four Hawaii fighters are ranked in the A-Class (highest) division of Shooto.

Charles Gracie Visits Hawaii

Charles Gracie, while vacationing in Hawaii, stopped by Relson's academy to teach a group class on Wednesday. He went over some half-guard sweeps and guard techniques. Charles is an extremely nice guy, similar to his younger brothers Renzo, Ralph, and Ryan. He left on Friday. We look forward to having him visit us again in Hawaii soon. Check out his website at www.charlesgracie.com for more info on his school in Daly City, California.
