Daniel Returns to Brazil

Brown belt Daniel Moraes returns to Brazil to start preparation for the 2001 Mundial (World Championships) where he plans to capture the brown belt world title to accompany his brown belt Brasileiro Championship. We all learned a lot from him as he learned English from us and wish him good luck.

Some Side Notes From Warrior's Quest

Everyone there who saw the Vitale/Medina fight saw the damage that Niko's knees, kicks, and toe stomps did to Todd Medina. After the first round, Medina was limping and his thigh was deep red and lumpy. After the fight, which I have to take my hat off to him after Medina sucked it up and kept fighting, Medina's corner man (the giant) had to carry him from the locker room out of the arena. Interview with Niko is upcoming in the next issue of FCF.

Stephan "Bozo" Palling had a strained rotator cuff injury in his right shoulder, but you would have never knew it from the power punches that he was delivering. He is a warrior and look for an interview that I did with him in the next FCF. His opponent took more of his power punches (and still was standing) than any one of his other opponents.

Each fighter got to choose their music, but due to technical difficulties (the DJ was on some other planet), most of the fighters' music did not get used. Brennan told me that next time, he's going to hire a DJ (heh heh).

The fights started a little after the scheduled 7:30 PM start time. I'm not totally sure of this, but maybe it was because of me...Sorry! I was a bit late entering the arena for the following reasons:
1. I left with enough time to get there (I promise), but got stuck on Victoria Street (the street that leads into the parking lot) for about 20 minutes due to the terrible synchronization of the two (yup only two) street lights.
2. I walked to the main entrance only to have to walk all the way around to the back of the arena in order to get in.
3. I know the above reasons sounds pretty weak so please feel free to add other reasons that you can come up with (e.g. lost my car keys, flat tire, my dog ate my entry pass, difficulty walking when your underwear is on backwards (stolen from Beaver Cleaver) etc.)

There was supposed to be an intermission later in the night, but Haru (the referee) wanted to have the ring ropes tightened so the other judge John Chrisostimo took a walk around. The DJ kept the music going the the fighters came out for the next fight and we had to look for John (no one's fault of course).

Jay R. Palmer gave Andy Wang a good fight considering that he just fought on Maui on the 27th. Unfortunately for Palmer, he lost both fights by kimura (inverted key lock). By the way, Andy cracked Palmer's arm and then told Palmer that if he didn't tap, he would break it. Palmer tapped. Good move.

Overall, considering all of the million and one things that could have went wrong in a first promotion in a big arena like the Blaisdell, Warrior's Quest was a great event. A couple of people even told me that it was the best MMA event that they have been to.

My reward for Zack's victory

For those of you who either watched me give up my training and come in on Wednesdays (which is my family time) to train Zack. Or the times when I came only to wait for Zack to show up and were wondering why I would do this, especially because you knew it was an amateur fight and there was no money in it for me. Below is the reason. - Chris

Chris,

Eh, trainer of champions! I can't thank you and your brother enough for all the help you gave me over the past couple months. You especially. Thanks for not letting me give up when I wanted to and thanks for believing in me. Sorry about the sloppiness of the fight but screw it, we won!!!!! But now it's time to go back to Jiu-Jitsu 101. Thanks again and thank God for putting you there in my corner. I would thank Shane but that mutha didn't get me the chair in time between rounds, so he can kiss my ass! Nah. I'll see you guys tonight @ the academy if you guys come, if not, then Friday! Thanks again!

God bless you!

Zack "The Gasser" Pang

Thank you for all your support

I, along with Zack Pang, want to take the time to thank everyone who helped contribute to his win last night. It was a hard fought win and could not have been done without each and every one of you. Whether it was the guys who took time from their own training to train with Zack, the guys who offered suggestions and corrections to his training, or all the people that came out to support him. We also want to send out a special thanks to Relson Gracie for being understanding and allowing us the full use of his facilities when training. I also want to thank God for letting Zack perform well and win the fight...and give him the wisdom to retire undefeated. ;-)

I also want to send out a special thank you to everyone, like Zack and every member of the Relson Gracie team who trains and competes hard, allowing me and my broken body to live my dreams of accomplishment through you. - Chris

Warriors Quest 2001: "The New Beginning" - Results
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
May 29, 2001
By Chris Onzuka
Chris@Onzuka.com

While there was a buzz all over the fireworks and action in the movie Pearl Harbor, especially in Hawaii, there was a lot more bombs thrown at the Blaisdell Arena. Former Jesus Is Lord member, Brennan Kamaka is now leading his own group of fighters under the SWAT Fighting Team. In addition to SWAT, he has started promoting primarily amateur MMA events. His first two events called Hawaiian Combat were successful enough to build into the Warriors Quest, which was held at the Blaisdell Arena. The event was split between professional and amateur bouts. The professional bouts were primarily represented by Kamaka's relatives, the Jesus Is Lord team and pitted them against the toughest up and comers from the west coast. Sparks flew as these game opponents met for a night of non-stop action. The event started off with some exciting amateurs that may be the stars of tomorrow and ended showing the strength of the Jesus Is Lord team and Niko Vitale's total domination of Todd Medina.

Warriors Quest Tonight
Event starts at 7:00PM

Warriors of the New Millenium 3 Results
Lahaina Civic Center, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii
May 27, 2001
By Chris Onzuka
Chris@Onzuka.com

Maui fight fans came to the old historic whaling town of Lahaina to see the third installment of Warriors of the New Millennium. As I have written before, problems constantly plague promoters, and this event was no different. Due to some last minute cancellations that would have caused the event to be cut in half, the promoters quickly scrambled to fill in spots and put on a show that would keep Maui fight fans satisfied. And I think they did it. The night ended up being a night of heavyweights, as the heavyweight tournament was the only tournament that was held. Luckily, heavyweights are associated with big blows that draw excitement sheerly because of the poundage of beef in the ring at one time unloading their biggest punches. And this night was no different. Every one of the heavyweights had one thing in mind…to knock off their opponent's head. This made for some exciting matches. In the single fights the Brazilians dominated with wins by Gustavo Monteiro and Ricardo Barros, both by KNOCK OUT. When was the last time that you heard two BJJ guys winning by knock out? Below are the results, pick up Full Contact Fighter for full coverage.

If I have time, I'll try to put up the sign up sheet with the food items that people are bringing to the potluck so you have a feel of what everyone is bringing. I have to get the sign up sheet from Todd.

Warriors Quest Weigh-in Info

Warriors Quest Weigh-ins
Player's Sports Bar & Grill
Corner of Alakea St & Beretania
Monday, May 28, 2001
12:00PM

For those of you interested in attending the Warriors Quest weigh-ins, it will be held at Player's Sports Bar & Grill downtown and starts at 12PM. It is interesting to go to a weigh-in because you get to "size" of the matches before hand when you get to see the two fighters standing next to each other. It is also interesting to see how the fighter handles having to lose more weight. Sometimes they come in wary from the weight loss, sometimes, it seems like it is no problem to lose 5 pounds. I don't know how to do it, but then again, I'm sitting here writing this eating cookies and drinking an Surpee. Go figure.

We have recently heard that Hawaii's Niko Vitale is scheduled to face Todd Medina who is a Carlson Gracie Fight Team member and UFC veteran. Todd is supposedly a brown belt in BJJ and runs his own school. It should be a great challenge for Niko is the athlete's athlete. If Niko wins, this fight will propel him to national attention and put him on the map.

Remember to buy your tickets for the event soon:

Warriors of the New Millennium III
has moved to May 27th

Warrior of the New Millennium III
Lahaina Civic Center, Maui, Hawaii
Saturday, May 27th, 2001

You can ask any promoter and I bet you will get the same answer. The life of a promoter is never boring. Warriors was originally scheduled for May 12th, but it postponed to May 26th, because of the untimely loss of Rickson Gracie's son, Rockson. Then a week before the event, it was pushed back one day to the 27th. They are running out of days left in May, so I am sure that this is the final date. The card has been juggled around a bit, but the promoters are striving to keep it as close to the original format as possible. The event will feature a couple tournaments and three super fights. The weight classes for the tournaments are as follows: 160lbs and under, 161-190lbs, and 191lbs and over.

All of you MMA fans in Maui, come out and support Maui's only MMA event. FCF will be there to cover the action, then I will fly back to cover another Warriors show on Oahu, Warrior's Quest which is two days later on May 29th. It will be a busy, but thoroughly entertaining few days.

Only 5 days left for Warriors Quest

Warriors Quest
Neil Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
Tuesday, May 29th, 2001

Brennan Kamaka just called and said that Jay R. Palmer vs Andy Wang was just added to the card. The weight limit will be 160lbs. Wang has dropped considerable weight in the last few years and has been tearing up the West Coast submission grappling circuit. It will be nice to see him back here and back in the ring. The weigh-ins will be Monday, the 28th and the card is set. There will be nine bouts that evening. The card looks incredible even though many people may not have heard of the Hawaii fighter's opponents. They are some tough up and comers who have been racking up victories on the West Coast. Look for a lot of action.

2001 Brasileiro de Equipes
(Brazilian Team Titles)
This Weekend in Brazil

The CBJJ is holding their 2001 Brazilian Team Titles this weekend May 26 & 27 in Belo Horizonte , Minas Gerais (Brazil) at the Ginasio Esporte Clube. In an effort to further expand the sport, the CBJJ is starting to host major tournaments outside of Rio. The Team titles is always a great fan favorite, as the majority of schools compete for the coveted titles of Brazilian Team Champions. The past few years all most of the major fighters have taken part as this Tournament gets stronger and stronger.

For those who don't know, the format is quite interesting, each academy enters a team of 7 fighters (5 active plus 2 reserves) to compete against another team. The kicker is that you choose the line up without knowing the order of the opposing team's line up, and the first team to 3 wins advances. So some great match ups occur and everyone has a great time. There are two divisions, light (up to 160 Lbs) and heavy and Brown an Black Belts compete in the same division. Schools can enter more than one team (Team A, Team B etc) but they cannot mix fighters between each team. Look for a report on this great tournament soon after the weekend.
Source: Kid Peligro

The team tournament usually pits the best fighters from each team either brown vs. black. Uusally, you would think that the black belts would eat up the brown belts, but the browns are usually very hungry for their black belt. Many top brown belts jump in to star status after this tournament.

Private Classes

Daniel and Fredson are available for private classes. Classes start at $35 for a half an hour and yup, you guessed it. $70 for a hour. I highly recommend these classes if you want to expand your game and take it to another level. These guys are cutting edge Jiu-Jitsu at it's best. Daniel is supposed to return to Brazil on May 29th and Fredson will soon leave as well to prepare for the World Championship so you snooze, you lose.

Potluck and Paintball Info

Our potluck is on for Sunday, May 27th and the sign up sheet is at the academy. Surprisingly, people are actually signing up so if you are interested in coming and having a fun filled day with you and your family (if you have one), please make it down to Ala Moana Beach Park in the key (the center of the beach park near the tennis courts). Even you loners are invited as well. We will have a volleyball and water football game and are open to new games that you may want to bring to the beach as long as it doesn't involve nudity (well, maybe we can work with that) and bondage.

Rex has confirmed the paintball day on Monday, May 28th. Todd is collecting money to pre-buy paintballs so we don't get ripped off at the field. Money is due at the academy on Wednesday and Thursday. Everyone is asked to drop $25 and that should take care of the all the paint you'll need for the day. If you are on the fence as far as coming, you can still buy paint there. Gun and equipment rental is about $25 as well. If you have your own equipment, I think the field fee is only $12.

A Big Thanks to all the brothers!

I want to send out a big thank you for all the guys who gave up their Saturday to come over and help me move. We really appreciate it and, after looking at all my crap, you guys know that we would have NEVER been able to do it without every one of you.

Thanks to Jeff, Goldberg, Chris & Cullen (although Cullen spent most of the time trying to shoot and stab people), Ian, Zack (thanks to Zack's girlfriend who made those rice crispies things), Don, Richie, Ryan, Les, Philip, Wil, Kaika, Kit, Ryan, Neil (even Neil came out...for like 15 minutes) & Big Kaleo. I hope I didn't forget anyone, but I wanted to thank you collectively and individually. I can definitely count on you guys. I am sure that a lot of the others had previous commitments and I understand. But just to let you know, one guy came who has a baby that is 7 days old and another guy came right after returning from the hospital after his couple month old baby had an eye infection. How can I thank these guys enough?

After 11 hours of continuous moving, we got everything in the house. And my wife and I worked up until midnight that night and all day and all night on Sunday putting things away. Although we are not done yet, most of it has been put away and we are one step closer to partying at my house!

PS. Don't tell my wife about the party yet...

Baret Update

According to my sources, Baret is doing well in Japan. He has perfected his knee lock and has submitted some big names in the fight game while training there. Baret placed 2nd this year at Abu Dhabi so he is definitely established himself to the world (everyone in Hawaii already knew) as one of the best lightweight grapplers in the world. He recently went to a Sambo school and submitted a bunch of people, including the instructor.

Jack Daniel's R&B Concert Tonight

I am still looking for information (e.g. ticket prices and locations where to buy tickets) on this concert and want to go to it. Gates open at 5:30 pm and the show starts at 6:30 pm. If you have any info, please email Mike or give me a call 381-9530.

Prepare: Two days left to Chris Move

Here is your friendly two day reminder for those thoughful souls that are going to help Chris move into his new house this Saturday. For the Aiea students this is the two day threatening. There are fliers at the Relson Gracie Main Academy (ask Todd) and I will bring some tonite to Aiea for class. We planned on starting at 8:00AM, although one person is going to come at 7:30AM because he might have to leave early. Please email me at Chris@Onzuka.com, call me 381-5959 or stop by either academy to pick up a flier for directions.

If you have a truck or van, please bring it to help move, the two large trucks that I had planned on previously fell through. We are moving one block away, so it won't be too bad.

If you can't come at 8:00AM, it is alright to come later in the day. Some people have told me that they have something to do in the morning, but will come later.
We will be there all day. If you come early in the day, I will feed you. If you are there around lunch time, I will feed you. I also have some "beverages" at my house for those who want to stick around after moving and hang out.

T. Jay Laid Up for a While

Super Brawl promoter T. Jay Thompson is home resting comfortably after having surgery to remove fragments of his L4-L5 disc that had migrated under his L4 vertabrae. Thompson wanted to express his gratitude to the seemingly endless well wishers. "It is good to be home and I appreciate all the e-mails of support I have gotten from Super Brawl fans around the world. I will try to pay their respect back with a great line-up of shows in the coming years."

He injured his back 7 weeks ago while sparring at Grappling Unlimited in Hawaii. The doctor is expecting a full recovery. "I tried a number of different rehab approaches to try to avoid surgery but the symptoms persisted. I look forward to being back on the mat in 6-8 weeks."

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, July 21 at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, HI and is scheduled to feature both Egan Inoue and Marcello Tiger on the same card once again. Look for fireworks to take place on July 21.

Potluck Sign Up at the Academy

Todd had made a sign up sheet at the academy for our Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu potluck that will be held at Ala Moana Beach Park on Sunday, May 27th. We will play volleyball and water football as well as possibly other games. This is a good time to bring out the family so your significant others and offspring can meet all your Jiu-Jitsu brothers and have a family fun day at the beach. Please sign up so we have a feel of how many people are coming and what is being brought so that we do not double up on some foods and supplies. See you there!

Todd Came Through!

After the scare of Fredson not being able to come, Relson Gracie Academy manager, Todd Tanaka, has once again come through and Fredson did teach at Aiea last night. He taught some killer guard passes. We had a huge class last night.

An Interesting Article in the LA Times

Rio Journal: Too Much English Is Spoken in Brazil, Some Say

By LARRY ROHTER

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 14 — If Aldo Rebelo gets his way, it will soon
be illegal for Brazilians to go to a "drive-in" for a "hot dog" and
"milkshake," entrust their cars to "valet parking" or invest their
money with a "personal banker."

The activities themselves will not be prohibited, mind you, just
the use of the English-language terms by which they are commonly
known here.

Mr. Rebelo, a member of Congress, decided to take action after he
took offense at the proliferation here of stores with
English-language names, like The Pet From Ipanema; Love, Sex and
Money, a boutique; World Top Lock; Fashion Mall; Bad Kid; Video
Market; and Sweet Way.

"Why should Brazilians have to feel embarrassed in their own
country because they can't pronounce these names?" said Mr. Rebelo,
a member of the Communist Party of Brazil.

In a burst of what opponents disparagingly call "verbal
nationalism," Mr. Rebelo is sponsoring legislation that would
outlaw the introduction and use of foreign words in this nation of
170 million people. It was initially considered little more than a
crank bill.

The goal of his bill, he said, is "to boost the self-esteem of the
people in relation to Portuguese and show them that it is not a
language that is ugly, underdeveloped, backward or useless, as some
people might imagine."

Mr. Rebelo said he was particularly alarmed by the use of
English-language terms in business and technology when "there are
perfectly adequate Portuguese-language substitutes."

Brazil has the largest computer and Internet industry in Latin
America, and English-derived verbs like startar, printar, attachar
or deletear and the nouns homepage, e-mail, site and mouse are
standard usage.

"I think he and the whole idea are nuts," retorted Ricardo Gouveia
Botelho, a 28-year-old Web site designer shopping at a computer
store. "We use those words because everybody in the world
understands them. And what does he plan to do, send the language
police to the office to bust us?"

But the proposal was approved by the lower house of Congress on
March 29, and business and advertising groups are lobbying
intensely to defeat it in the Senate.

The lower house passed the bill in an atmosphere of wanting to
distract attention from a growing political corruption scandal, and
it is not known when the Senate will get around to dealing with it.
If the Senate passes the bill, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso
will have to decide whether to sign it.

Though French and Arabic have historically been the main sources
of foreign words used in Portuguese, the language of Brazil, the
initiative is clearly aimed at English, which Mr. Rebelo said he
regarded as an instrument of "the economic and commercial hegemony
of the United States."

Businesses have already begun reacting as though they expect his
bill to become law. Major banks have ended programs with names like
Hot Money, Federal Card and Home Banking, while stores have begun
taking down signs that advertise a "sale" or "20 percent off" and
replacing them with others announcing a "liquidação."

In a show of support for Mr. Rebelo, posters listing
Portuguese-language substitutes for English words have gone up over
this cosmopolitan city, which sets styles for the rest of the
country. They were put up by the Movement for the Valuation of
Brazilian Culture, Language and Riches, a nationalist group.

But most language professionals maintain that the legislation is
too extreme and that it underestimates the absorptive capacity of
Brazilian Portuguese.

Brazilians have proven so creative in adapting English to their
own needs, in fact, that native speakers of English are often
baffled by the usages they encounter here. To Brazilians a shower
stall is a "box," a billboard is an "outdoors," to go jogging is to
"cooper" (after a doctor who introduced it here), a razor blade is
a "gilete" and the steroid-fueled weight lifters who pick fights in
nightclubs are "pit boys."

Taken literally, the measure would also appear to outlaw much of
the vocabulary of soccer, the national sport, starting with the
name of the game itself, futebol, and including such terms as gol
and pênalti. But Mr. Rebelo said he was willing to grant an
exception for words that had already been or were being assimilated
into Portuguese.

"We don't want to control the evolution of the language," he said.
"What we want is to avoid abuses." And the best way to do that, he
contends, is to punish violators with fines or by "sending them
back to school for Portuguese classes."

The legislation calls for the Brazilian Academy of Letters to
determine which foreign words can be used legally, or as Mr. Rebelo
puts it, "granted a residence visa," and which cannot. But the
academy, which already sets the rules for spelling here, seems to
have reservations about the expanded role envisioned for it.

"The congressman's concern for the health of our language is
praiseworthy," said Tarcísio Padilha, president of the 40-member
group. "But this problem is a cultural one of great complexity, and
it seems to me to be more a matter for public debate than one which
should be regulated by laws and decrees."

Sérgio Nogueira Duarte, a professor of Portuguese who writes a
weekly column on language for the daily Jornal do Brasil, said:
"Foreign words are present in any language, and often for good
reasons. To use the word `dumping,' for example, is better than
wasting a whole line to explain in Portuguese that you are talking
about selling a product below cost so as to damage a competitor."

One reason Mr. Rebelo's proposal may be flourishing is Brazil's
status as the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Western
Hemisphere, which feeds a sense of isolation and fear that the
language will be overwhelmed by others.

The drive to protect Portuguese is not the only such movement.
France has passed numerous laws in the last decade to try to
protect the French language; in fact, Mr. Rebelo said his measure
was modeled on those. Quebec also has passed laws to assure the
supremacy of French.

Portuguese may be the seventh most widely spoken language in the
world, but outside Brazil it is the mother tongue of fewer than 50
million people, the bulk of whom live in five very poor countries
in Africa — Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and São
Tomé e Príncipe.

As a result, there was a flurry of concern last year when Steven
R. Fischer, an American linguist, predicted that "within 300 years
Brazil will be speaking" a different language.

That forecast came on the heels of a government decision to make
the study of Spanish obligatory in Brazilian schools to help forge
closer ties with the rest of Latin America, which often dismisses
Portuguese as nothing more than "Spanish, badly spoken."

"Brazil is surrounded by countries that speak Spanish," Dr.
Fischer said in an interview with the newsmagazine Veja. "As
commercial exchanges and contacts increase," he said, "there will
be much pressure" to abandon Portuguese.

"Due to the enormous influence of Spanish, it is quite likely that
a type of Portunhol will emerge," he added, combining the
Portuguese words for Portuguese and Spanish.

In an effort to fortify the language internationally, Brazil has
stepped up its financial support for the Community of
Portuguese-Speaking Nations, created in 1996.

The Brazilian government has also pushed for Portuguese to be used
as an official language at the United Nations and taken the lead in
trying to revive the use of Portuguese in East Timor, where use of
the language was harshly restricted during 25 years of Indonesian
rule.

But Brazilians should not "feel threatened or go tilting at
windmills on some sort of Don Quixote quest that doesn't make
sense," Dr. Padilha counseled. "Any language is a living organism
that is evolving, and our language, thank God, is one that has
always shown a capacity to accept the foreign words it wants and to
reject the ones that it doesn't want."

Possible Bad News

Todd has just informed me that due to the fact that Relson wants Fredson to teach the 7:30-8:30 class tonight for some reason when he knew that Fredson was supposed to teach in Aiea, Fredson may not make it to Aiea tonight. Daniel has returned from Kauai, but he is sick and will be unable to make it. Hopefully, we can fandangle something to bring Fredson over tonight. Keep your fingers crossed.

Fredson and Daniel in Aiea Tonight

Once again, I announce that Black belt Fredson Alves and Brown belt Daniel Moraes will be making an appearance at the Aiea Academy tonight and teaching class. I have made Angela responsible if something happens and they have to back out. This will probably be the Aiea students last opportunity to have a class with these two killer instructors. Please be on time because we plan to start on time (Brazilians are worse than Hawaiian time, but Todd should be bringing them so hopefully that will work out).

Tito Trashed Joppy!

For all those who saw that fight, Felix "Tito" Trinidad looks incredibly powerful, especially after moving up another weight class. They are saying that he will fight Roy Jones Jr. soon, but I don't think he is big enough. Roy Jones Jr., in my opinion, is the best boxer pound for pound. Tito will fight Bernard Hopkins on September 19th (I believe) and Hopkins will be in the fight of his life. It looks like Tito will be the undisputed middleweight champ. See if you can catch the Trinidad/Joppy fight on HBO or Showtime when they replay it.

Plea for help moving

Alright all you slackers...I mean great and helpful people out there from the Relson Gracie academy, as you may have heard, I just bought a house and have been working on it for months now (thanks for the guys who came over and helped me out). I am finally planning to move in on Saturday, May 19th and need tons of help. I have promised that if anyone and everyone can come that Saturday to help me move I will never ask for more help again
(fingers crossed).

If you can come out for the day or even for one hour, my family would really appreciate it. If we can get all my junk in the house that day, I can take it from there. Also, I will feed anyone who comes to help. I will probably start at 8:00AM (if I can get up that early) and continue until it is finished.

If you can come and help, please email me, Chris@onzuka.com or call me on my cell @ 381-5959 to let me know when you are coming and for directions.

For the Aiea guys, class will be VERY unpleasant if I don't see you guys on the 19th, if you know what I mean...

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Aiea Academy student, Chris Slavens, on the arrival of his new 7lbs 13.5oz baby boy, Conner, born Thursday morning at 8:40 AM. His older brother, Cullen, was very excited as they both visited our class last night to tell us the big news. Chris' wife gave birth only about 8 hours after the due date which is pretty amazing that it was that accurate. Thanks to the delay of Queens Hospital, we will not have a picture for about a week or so.

Ouano Order

I have just talked to John Ouano and he told me that his next shipment of single weave gi's and shorts are coming in at the end of May. I will place the order once I get word that his shipment has arrived. If you are interested in buying a gi, fight gloves, or gi shorts, please contact me prior to the end of May. I will need advance payment for the merchandise because the last time I bought it first I got screwed and got stuck with extra gi's and my money tied up until I could sell them. Contact me at Mike@onzuka.com or on my cell 381-9530.

Daniel Moraes Leaving

Daniel is supposed to be leaving on May 29th back to Brazil to prepare for the World Championships or Mundial. As stated earlier, we are planning a potluck on Sunday May 27th at Ala Moana Beach Park and another game of paintball at the Nimitz field on Memorial Day, Monday May 28th. If you are interested in coming to either of these two events, please email me with what you are planning to bring to the potluck or that you are coming to the paintball game. Once again, all Relson Gracie students, friends, and family are invited. I will post more details as we get closer.

Cornering the market on boxing legends
Posted in the Honolulu Advertiser on: Thursday, May 10, 2001

By Fred Lewis
Advertiser Staff Writer

Over the verdant fields and dusty cane haul roads Al Silva traveled in a career as a supervisor for the now-defunct O'ahu Sugar Co., the talk would invariably turn to his "chickens."

Al Silva, right, will once again be in Jesus Salud's corner Tuesday. Salud says Silva taught him about boxing and life.
Advertiser library photo • Dec. 5, 1998

"The workers, the boxing fans, they'd always ask me, 'how your manoks (chickens in Filipino)?'" Silva recalls. "It was their way of asking me about my fighters."

Along the Leeward side, where he ran the bustling Waipahu Boxing Club for nearly four decades, Silva's fighters, the ones whose faces peered out from the yellowed newspaper clippings on the wall of the late Waipahu Gym, were a point of community pride and interest.

Their names — Andy Ganigan, Paul Lucas, Jesus Salud, Brian Viloria, among others — and exploits were legend.

This week, the last of his two active champions, Salud and Viloria, come home to roost.

Their careers have taken them around the world — Viloria to a world amateur title and the Olympics; Salud to a series of professional championships. Silva, 84, has retired to Kaua'i and their old stomping grounds, venerable Waipahu Gym, has been torn down, a new one slowly rising in its place.

Yet, once more, this time on Tuesday afternoon's nationally televised boxing card at the Hawai'i Convention Center, they will reunite around the ring with the man they still respectfully refer to as "Mr. Silva."

Silva will work in Salud's corner as he did when the former world junior featherweight champion first began as a raw 9-year-old no bigger than the biddy boxing gloves he wore in P.A.L. competition. And Viloria's management team said it would welcome Silva in the flyweight's corner, too.

"I love that old man," Salud, 38, says. "It wouldn't be the same without him in my corner. I still talk to him all the time on the phone, no matter where I am. He's been like a father figure to me. He's taught me so much; not only about boxing but about life. About everything."

A former territorial lightweight champion, Silva took over the Waipahu club from Johnny Yasui after World War II, teaching the finer points of the sport to generations of young hopefuls. "We'd take anybody that wanted to work," Silva said. "The only rule was that when you came into the gym, play time was over. It had to be all business."

That's what made for a quick and lasting attachment to Salud and Viloria. "They were there to work; they wanted to become champions," Silva said. "Jesus would come on the bus all the way over from Nanakuli, even when it was raining. When it rained so hard you couldn't see across the street and even the Waipahu kids didn't come, Jesus would still be there. I'd ask him why and he'd say, ' 'cause I want you to make me a champion.' "

Salud recalled, "Mr. Silva built my foundation just like he did Brian's and a lot of other fighters. It is like a building, once you have a strong foundation, you can go from there. That's what he's given all of us."

Said Silva: "It makes an old man proud to see them come back; it makes me happy to see what they've become."

State Boxing
Commission approves
Salud fight card

But two fights, including
Viloria's first pro bout,
are still under review

By Paul Arnett
Star-Bulletin

All five fights on next Tuesday's nationally televised card at the Hawaii Convention Center were approved yesterday at the State Boxing Commission meeting.

Two of the bouts, including the pro debut for Waipahu's Brian Viloria, still need signed contracts for the commission to review. But, barring some unforeseen circumstances at next Monday's commission meeting, the Tom Moffatt-promoted card is good to go.

"We're glad to get that done," Moffatt said. "Brian will be here on Thursday. He's facing a stand-up guy (Ben Jun Escobia). Hopefully, this will be the start of another great boxing era for Hawaii."

Viloria said Monday night that he wanted to get any and all press conferences over with as quickly as possible so he can concentrate on the fight. He will continue to train hard through the weekend, then taper down as Tuesday approaches.

"I want to start focusing on the fight as quickly as I can," Viloria said. "I'll do some training in Kalakaua Gym. I feel good. This is a great chance for people around the country to see there are good fighters and fight fans here in Hawaii."

The card begins with a scheduled 10-round junior middleweight championship bout between Ann Wolfe of Austin, Texas, and Vienna Williams of Philadelphia. Williams has won all five of her fights, two by knockout. Wolfe is 6-1 with four KOs.

Although ESPN2 officials have yet to tell Moffatt the order of the bouts, it's likely Viloria will climb through the ropes a little before 4 p.m. After his scheduled four-round bout with Escobia, who is 13-13-3 with five knockouts, the main event between Jesus Salud and Fernando "Bobby Boy'' Velardez will begin.

The card, scheduled for two hours, will be shown live on the neighbor islands, but could be blacked out on Oahu until a later date.

"If it's a sellout by the weekend, then we'll show it here live," Moffatt said. "But you know how fans are here, they wait to the last minute.''

The room where it's being held in the convention center seats about 4,000. Ticket prices range from $25 to $100 for ringside.

If this card draws well, it's likely ESPN will consider broadcasting more fights in Hawaii in the future.

No Fredson, No Daniel

Relson, Chris, and I did a seminar yesterday (I'll reveal for who at a later time) and Fredson had to cover the classes at the academy. I guess Relson went straight home after the seminar so Fredson and Daniel could not come to Aiea. They plan on coming next Tuesday night so again, all the Aiea students are invited to take class with these monsters.

Daniel is leaving on May 29 back for Brazil so we possibly could be planning another paintball session that weekend, which is the Memorial Day weekend. We usually also have a potluck at Ala Moana beach park so we will start planning that and give you more details on what exactly will we do.

Fredson & Daniel at Aiea Tonight

Royler Gracie black belt, Fredson Alves, and brown belt, Daniel Moraes will be making a guest appearance in the Aiea academy tonight. All Aiea students are invited to attend. Fredson has been at the academy for a while now and has been showing some incredible techniques. He was teaching in Aiea on Thursday and I'm sure everyone felt how good he was. This will be Daniel's first visit to Aiea and hopefully not his last. Daniel is a purple belt world champion and brown belt Brasileiro champion (National Championship of Brazil). Remember that class starts at 7:30 pm.

Ouano Gi Order

I am putting together a gi and glove order that I would like to submit in the middle of this week. If you are interested in a gi or fight glove, please contact me. Because I got stuck with a lot of gi's and money hanging around out of my own pocket, I would like to collect the money prior to ordering the gi's. Single white and blue gi's are $80, double whites are $115, and double blues are $120. Pants only are also for sale. White pants are $25 and the blue pants are $30. These gi's are all Brazilian cut which means they are tailored to fit very well like an Atama or Krugen. I think the gi is untouchable as far as quality vs. price. The fight glove which is very similar to a Harbinger is $35. All these prices are with shipping included, no added costs. I need to put together at least five gi's before I can place the order so please get in touch with me ASAP by email, Mike, or call my cell 381-9530.

Beginning Portuguese Class

We took a beginning Portuguese language class probably about two years ago with Sandy DeOlivera who is an excellent teacher (and singer by the way). Unfortunately, the class had to be cancelled and we kept begging Sandy to start up another class. Finally, she is teaching another class, but it is going to take place on the days that we teach Jiu-Jitsu. We tried to get it changed, but everything is set by the school so we are out of luck. As a side note, she is the ex-wife of Carlos, who is considered the best congo player in all of Brazil and possibly the world. Here are the details to sign up for the class and class times:

UFC Update

Berger lost big time to De Souza. It looked like De Souza dominated the ground position. De Souze by ref stoppage?

Carlos Newton taps out Miletich with a headlock choke. Newton was losing throughout the fight, but slapped on the choke while they were scrambling for position. Newton wins by choke.

Randleman gets knocked down with a weak left and then was on the bottom of many punches forcing Big John to stop the fight. Randleman loses.

Couture beats Rizzo from guard and opens some cuts. Couture then gases and then Rizzo dominated the standup. Couture wins a conversial unanimous decision.

UFC Update

Since we're screwed here in Hawaii and I'm lucky enough to have a friend call in some details, here is the up to the minute results of the UFC. It's not finished yet.

Pete Williams got TKO'd by Sammy Schilt. Schilt dominated Williams with multiple punches and Big John had to step in to stop the fight. Schilt wins by TKO.

BJ Penn dominated Joey Gilbert. BJ got Gilbert's back and rained punches. Congratulations to BJ! They only showed a little part of his fight, but it looked like he owned Gilbert. BJ wins by ref stoppage?

Shoney Carter knocked out Matt Serra
Serra won the first round, but Shoney knocked down Matt with a spinning back fist. Matt almost tore off Shoney's arm with a killer omo plata.
The second round was even.
With about 10 seconds left in the third round, Shoney pulled off another spinning back fist that knocked out Serra. Carter wins by KO.

Kevin Randleman is next up.

Hawaii's Own BJ Penn in the UFC

Hilo born and bred, BJ Penn, who also happens to be the defending BJJ Peso Pena (featherweight) Black Belt World Champion is making his UFC and mixed martial arts debut tonight against who some call the best wrestler to come out of Chicago, Joey Gilbert. Gilbert has placed 3rd in the 2000 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Championships and is well versed in preventing submissions. Gilbert also has one of the best high school wrestling records in Illinois. BJ is supposed to have been working very hard on his stand up skills and wrestling. It should be a great fight and we all hope that BJ comes out on top as the winner.

Also fighting is UFC Heavyweight Champion, Randy Couture, against Pedro Rizzo and UFC Welterweight (formally Lightweight) Champion Pat Miletich versus Carlos Newton which also will be excellent fights, at least on paper. Renzo Gracie Black Belt and second place finisher in this year's Abu Dhabi, Matt Serra is facing the unpredictable Shonie Carter. Pete Williams of the Lion's Den is facing King of Pancrase, Sammy Schilt who is 6'-10" tall and weighs 265 lbs. This should be a great UFC with a lot of interesting match ups.

So far, no word whether Players will be showing the UFC. If history is any indication, Hawaii fans are out of luck once again.

Fredson visits Aiea

Royler Gracie black belt, Fredson Alves, visited the Aiea academy last night and taught some killer techniques. He plans to return on Tuesday so all the Aiea students are invited to take class with this top competitor. After teaching, Fredson trained with everyone and basically single-handedly submitted everyone in the joint. We are very lucky to have him in Hawaii and to have him make a guest appearance in Aiea.

SHOOTO 'TO THE TOP' Results

May 1st in the Tokyo Korakuen Hall

It looks like this Shoot show was a bust. Numerous cancellations throughout the card and once again Baret gets stiffed. Some of the main fighters also did not get to compete for one reason or another. Hopefully, Shooto cleans up their act.

Tetsuo Katsuta (K'z Factory) defeated Alexandre "Pequeno" França Nogueira (Brazilian Top Team) by Judges Decision 2-0(30-28, 30-27, 29-29)

Katsuta escaped Pequeno's front choke sleepers twice. Katsuta punched Pequeno many times from inside guard. This match was not a title match, so Katsuta said he want to fight with “Pequeno” for the lightweight belt. “Pequeno” also said he wants to fight for the title with Katsuta at August event in Osaka.

Since there were many canceled games, the sponsor prepared the additional two exhibition match particularly A BJJ exhibition of Yuki Nakai vs. Takumi Nakayama , and a shooto-rule exhibition of Rumina Sato vs. Shuichiro Katsumura. Rumina said he will
fight at August event in Osaka.

Breaking News on AMC Pankration student Kim Mason

At this time there is no confirmation that the Kim Mason in the story below is the same Kim Mason that trains out of Matt Hume's AMC Kickboxing and Pankration in Washington state.

Former assistant police chief's son charged with first-degree murder
By Michael Ko
Seattle Times staff reporter

A breakthrough witness and telltale blood from a thigh wound led King County prosecutors yesterday to file first-degree-murder charges against Kim Heichel Mason in the death of Hartanto Santoso, despite not having recovered Santoso's body.

Santoso, 31, a Kirkland resident, has been missing since Feb. 19.

According to charging papers, a witness came forward Wednesday who brought all the pieces together in the two-month investigation.

The witness, police said, picked up Mason on the night of Feb. 19 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Mason had dried blood on his hands and a large bandage on his right thigh, the witness told police.

Police later saw a videotape of Mason, recorded March 3, and confirmed that he had a wound on his right thigh. Police later questioned Mason and examined the wound; tests revealed it occurred within a time frame that included Feb. 19.

Santoso's car was found at the airport parking garage Feb. 21. Blood on the driver's seat of that car matches the location of Mason's leg wound, authorities say. Police later investigated the witness' car and reportedly found blood in the passenger seat consistent with the location of Mason's leg wound.

Police think Mason stabbed Santoso at Santoso's apartment, accidentally cut himself in the thigh during the altercation, disposed of Santoso's body and then drove the victim's car to the airport. The witness allegedly drove Mason back home.

Mason, 22, had a strong motive to kill Santoso, prosecutors say. Santoso was set to testify against Mason in a kidnapping case, scheduled to begin May 17.

According to prosecutors, on Jan. 23, Mason lured Santoso to his Redmond apartment and choked him to unconsciousness. Santoso told police that he awoke bound and gagged. He said Mason pointed a 9-mm handgun at him and told him to write a $700 check, allegedly to pay off Mason's drug debts.

Mason eventually let Santoso go; he was arrested and charged a few days later.

Mason said he was fending off an unwanted sexual advance. Police said the two had a sexual relationship about a year before the assault. They met while working at a Juanita-area nursing home.

Santoso's friends said yesterday that while they are relieved Mason is in custody, they are upset with the judge who released Mason without bail in the first place, after the alleged kidnapping incident.

Prosecutors had asked for $200,000 bail in that case. "There was an extremely violent act that precipitated all of this," said Jeff Clemenson, a family friend who lived with Santoso in Portland in 1997.

"Someone seriously needs to look at the decision-making process involved with Mason being released."

Mason's father is John Mason, who retired in 1999 as a Seattle assistant police chief after 30 years on the force.

John Mason vouched for his son before King County Superior Court pro tem Judge Charles Johnson. Kim Mason was released into his father's custody, without bail. "The people that were holding out some hope that (Santoso) was still alive, they're feeling pretty bad right now," Clemenson said. "(Santoso) was very trusting, he wanted to help, but he picked the wrong people to be friends with."

BJJ Black Belt Visits Relson's Academy

A mysterious BJJ black belt visited Relson Gracie's main academy last night. He has trained there before, but not much people know too much about him. We do know that he is from Ryan Gracie's school in Sao Paulo, Brazil and that he is one of only five black belts from that school. He trained with Daniel Morais and Fredson Alves. Daniel Morais returned to the academy to train last night. Daniel took a little time off after the Arnold-Gracie Worlds, where he lost a close match with Marcio Feitosa of Gracie Barra.

Quote of the Day

"How much can you really know about yourself if you've never been in a fight?"
