NAGA RETURNS TO HAWAII - The North American Grappling Association is America's largest mixed grappling tournament circuit with over 5,000 competitors worldwide. On
September 22nd, 2001 the NAGA returns to Honolulu, Hawaii for it's 2nd Annual NAGA Hawaiian Grappling Championship Gi & No-Gi tournament at Farrington High School Gym. The NAGA has increased the number of Men's, Women's, Seniors, Teens & Kid's Divisions. Competitors will be matched with others closer to your size, weight and experience level! We have also added two Absolute Divisions for Gi & No-Gi fighters. The Absolute divisions are open to all who want fight for one of our NAGA Championship Belts! We are also GIVING away some great doors prizes donated by our sponsors including NAGA, MixedMArtialArts.com & Proving Grounds fight gear & Gold's Gym Free Memberships!

NEW BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU RULES FOR GI DIVISIONS: After many requests from our Gi competitors and instructors, we have switched back to using BJJ Points for the Gi Divisions. This has been very popular in the states and we hope to see more Gi fighters take to the mat on September 22nd.

ABSOLUTE DIVISIONS: Our idea is to replace the “Single Superfight” with Absolute or “Professional Divisions”. Anyone is allowed to compete in the Absolute Divisions. Last year Baret Yoshida won the belt, who will take it this year?

ADVANCED GI DIVSIONS GI 1ST**: In order to get the GI Grapplers fighting at the beginning of the day, we are dedicating ring #4 to the GI Divisions. We will work from Advanced to Beginner so that Advanced and Intermediate Gi fighters don't have to wait all day to compete. This is the opposite as the NO Gi so Advanced competitors who enter both will have plenty of rest in between divisions as will beginners!

We are holding a 4-Man No-Gi Invitational tournament and are looking for the top 4 grapplers/teams in Hawaii to be represented. The only requirement is that the each fighter is under 185 lbs.

Royler Seminar Update!

Each seminar will have the first hour with the gi & the second hour without
the GI. You must pay for the seminar no matter what. If you don't own a gi and just want to do the no gi, then it is still the same price.

IMPORTANT: Royler says that "gi pants must be worn for the no gi instruction."

The no gi class participants need to wear t-shirts as well along with their gi pants.

BBQ Monday!

Since everyone should be off on Monday, September 3 for Labor Day, we are planning another BBQ at Ala Moana Beach Park. As usual, it is a potluck so bring a dish, your family, and hang out with everyone. If we have enough people, we'll play volleyball and water football. All Relson Gracie students are welcomed to hang out. This is a good time for your family to become familiar with your Jiu-Jitsu family. We will try to be at the keyhole (near the tennis courts) in the center of the park.

Royler Seminar Tentatively Set!

Royler Gracie, 4-time BJJ Black Belt World Champ and 3-time Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Champ will be doing a seminar at the Relson Gracie Academy on Friday, September 7th and Saturday, September 8th. The time and date is finally set. Black Belt and Kauaian, Kai "Buffalo" Garcia, will be there to aid Royler in this seminar. So, you get two black belts for the price of one.

We will need at least 40 guys per seminar or the seminar does NOT happen. The academy is trying to get Royler to go over some gi and no gi material so that no-gi based schools will find something for them.
Payment must be made in advance by September 5 to see if we have enough guys for two seminars.

Royler Seminar on Oahu

Royler Gracie, 4-time BJJ Black Belt World Champ and 3-time Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Champ will be doing a seminar at the Relson Gracie Academy on Saturday, September 8th. The time is still yet to be determined, but the cost will be $50 for the two hour seminar. All schools are welcomed to take this seminar from the champ and one of the most technical members of the Gracie family. Call the academy at 589-2524 or shoot an email to the academy to sign up for the seminar. It will be first reserved, first served.

So You Want to be a Fighter?

It has just been announced that there will be an amateur event on Tuesday, September 25. The promoter, T. Jay Thompson, is looking for fighters to fill this event. If you are interested, email your background to superbrawl@hawaii.rr.com. This event is coming up quickly so if you ever wanted to try a MMA fight or if you are looking for your chance to break in to the pros, this may be your opportunity to perform in front of a large crowd at the birthplace of NHB in Hawaii, Gussie's.

Later that week, on Friday, September 28, the UFC will be shown at Gussie's for only $5 at the door. It's a good place to kick back in A/C, shoot some pool, throw some darts, and see if Tito Ortiz can come through on his promise to kick Vitor's ass...or is it going to be the re-emergence of the Phenom back in the cage once again?

T. Jay has also announced that the Super Brawl XXII is set for Saturday, October 13 featuring Hawaii's own, Egan Inoue, against an opponent yet to be named. If you were at the last Super Brawl, you know what kind of fireworks were going off in the ring and you don't want to miss this one!

UFC on Oceanic Pay-per-view Cable

I have been informed by my "source" that the UFC WILL be shown on Oceanic cable pay-per-view so now you have a choice of where to see the UFC. If you don't want to shell out the dough, go to Gussie's or you can stay home and once again enjoy the UFC on your very own TV.

Relson Leaves Today!

Relson leaves today for North and South Carolina, Arizona, and LA for some seminars. If you are in any of these areas, contact your local Relson Gracie Association school and sign up for the seminar.

Royler to Arrive in Kauai Soon

I believe that Royler will arrive on Kauai either today or tomorrow on vacation. He is supposedly doing a small seminar there. We are working on getting him here on Oahu to do a seminar, but are trying to get a good price on a 1-1/2 to 2 hour seminar to maximize the amount of students that can afford this seminar.

Anderson Silva Short Background

Of course, after the impressive win over previously undefeated and #1 ranked Middleweight Hayato Sakurai everybody wants to know more about Anderson Silva.
This bout was highly anticipated in Japan since Silva has defeated then #2 rated
Tetsuji Kato in a previous SHOOTO event. And Sakurai, well, Sakurai is always Sakurai, a true legend and icon among the Japanese fans!

Prior to the match, the skinny among the press, the commentators and the insiders was that Anderson would give Sakurai a hard time but would not able to take him. People were underestimating Mr. Silva.

Anderson is a very humble Muay Thay fighter with a very good Jiu-Jitsu background and with a huge team backing him 100%. Chute Boxe team is really taking care of the Japanese idols. First Vanderlei Silva did a pretty serious job against Sakuraba and now Anderson Silva got Sakurai in a battle & completely dominated him.

There has got to be something behind this ordinary Brazilian family name.......

Pay attention to Silva, Anderson. (well, pay attention to Vanderlei too) because Anderson will be one of the greatest surprises in NHB. Stay tuned for more big news from Anderson soon....

Mach is Defeated!

The most devastating fighter in his weight class, Hayato "Mach" Sakurai has been defeated by Brazilian newcomer, Anderson Silva. Silva has been very impressive with his fights in Brazil and beyond. He has made a major statement and shot straight to the top. It was reported that Silva was close to putting Sakurai out with some vicious knees. Shooto star, Rumina Sato is back as well scoring a decision in his return fight back from a long break. He was said to be more cautious than usual and needed this win to re-establish himself.

Relson Gracie International BJJ Tournament Update

Saturday, October 13, 2001
Kaiser High School Gym
Tournament starts at 9:00AM
Rules Clinic to start at 8:45AM

The man behind the scenes, the original Master Toddy, also known as TT Boy, has informed me that due to another event, this year's Gracie International Tournament will
HAVE to be completed by 5:00PM. Because of this the tournament is going to have to START promptly at 9:00AM.

THIS IS NO JOKE! Although it would be a great one, Kaiser High School's athletic director says that they need use of the gym shortly after 5:00PM, so this years tournament will start much earlier than usual.

Kids, Women, and White belt, lightweight competitors please be there, ready to compete at 9:00AM sharp. We are planning on having the rules clinic at 8:45AM and start the tournament at 9:00AM.

I know, I know, this is setting prescendent, and we have never started a tournament before 11AM, but to prove that this will happen, I have been told that we are going to start the tournament with or without Relson being there. For those of you that did not know, often times we have to await our fearless leader, but this time it will be different.

There is also a new policy regarding late registrations and weigh-ins on the day of the tournament.
Late registrations have to be in by 8AM, to be included into the keys and competitors weighing in on the same day as the tournament, must make weight. If they do not, this must be determined by 8AM or they will NOT be automatically put into the weight class above and only be allowed to compete in the Open weight class. This is to avoid confusions right before the start of the tournament, which has caused delays in the past.

We will post further warnings and reminders about this as the tournament approaches.

Warrior's Quest 2:
Battle of the Champions Results

Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
August 25, 2001
By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com

All 3 Jesus Is Lord Team Captains Win!
Brennan Kamaka and crew definitely had their share of the "promoter's life" for this event. From starting off with a solid card, replacements and injuries stripped the card down, causing matches to be shuffled and new fighters brought in. One thing is for sure, the parts that are in their control are improving. For instance, Kamaka added two Jumbotron big screens for better viewing, a light show, a DJ and brought in Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell to attend the event. The weigh ins and press conference were even situated as to build anticipation for the bouts by seating all the fighters on a "U" shaped table, each fighter facing his opponent directly across him. This allowed attendees to size up the fighters for each match. There were no easy fights on this night, with the exception of Bozo Palling's quick triangle submission of Antonio Banuelos. The event climaxed with the last two main event matches. Ron Jhun and Pete Spratt had a war to end all wars. Both fighters gave everything they had in one of the best fights in Hawaii and maybe of this year. Both fighters had each other on the brink of a knock out, taking turns stunning each other with hard punches. After that war, Jeremy Williams caused Bradda Cooper to continually search for a way to pass his guard. Bradda Cooper opened up some space and did what he does best, knock people out. Cooper landed some hard punches to the head of Williams, causing Williams to crumble and cover up, ending the fight. If anyone had any doubts about Ron Jhun and Ray Cooper being invited to the UFC, these fights should have cleared them. Full fight descriptions and pictures will be in the next FCF. Subscribe now!

Warrior's Quest Press Conference and Weigh-Ins
Players Aiea Sports Bar
August 24, 2001
by Michael Onzuka
Mike@onzuka.com

Promoter Kai Kamaka going over the rules.

Ray "Bradda" Cooper vs. Jeremy Williams

Ron "The Machine Gun" Jhun vs. Pete Spratt

Antonio Banuelos vs. Stephen "Bozo" Palling

Jason Von Flue vs. Bob "Bob-O" Ostovich

The Warrior's Quest weigh-in and press conference was held in Aiea near the home of the NFL Pro Bowl Aloha Stadium. This event marked the release of a new sanctioning body in Hawaii, abbreviated HAMMA, Hawaii Association of Mixed Martial Arts. More information regarding the formation of this sanctioning body will be released soon. It was an interesting set up where all the fighters were sat at tables formed in a "U" shape and faced their opponents with the headliners sitting in the middle. With the removal of Joe Hurley, who was originally scheduled to fight Ray "Bradda" Cooper, a very tall and lanky Jeremy Williams stepped up for the challenge. Williams kept all the fighters very relaxed as he constantly cracked jokes during the photo sessions. The card is full of fighters from the Jesus is Lord gym, which is expected when two brothers-in-law, Brennan and Kai Kamaka, are the promoters. The JIL team is very friendly and inviting which helped the onlookers really start getting the impression that mixed martial arts is indeed a sport and not grudge matches or street fights. The "Machine Gun," Ronald Jhun looked ripped and ready as he attempts to continue his dominance at the 180-pound class facing a densely built, Pete Spratt. The Shooto Hit man, Stephen "Bozo" Palling, is keeping himself busy and sharp while taking on Antonio Banuelos. All the fighters that were present seemed to easily make the weight and looked ready for action. UFC and Pride veteran, Chuck Liddell, was present at the weigh ins and looked in top shape for his upcoming fight with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Murilo Bustamante. 170-pound contender, Chris Brennan was also in attendance. UFC Light Heavyweight Champ, Tito Ortiz and UFC, Pride, and WWF superstar, Ken Shamrock are flying in the early afternoon tomorrow to watch the fights. The card looks to be a good mix of young and experienced fighters that should give the Hawaii fans something to enjoy this Saturday. Full fight descriptions and fight results will be in the next issue of Full Contact Fighter!

UFC Additional Match

Another bout has been added to the already great UFC card on September 28, 2001. Kevin Randleman will face the impressive and talent wrestler Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko in the Light Heavyweight division. The winner of this match could be the next opponent for Tito Ortiz.

Kevin “The Monster” Randleman returns to the Octagon on September 28th to take on Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko in a light heavyweight bout.

This fight will be a battle of two world-class wrestlers. Matyushenko is a former Russian national champion and European champion in freestyle wrestling. He also showed great passing skills when he last fought and totally dominated his opponent, Yuki Kondo. Randleman won two NCAA titles for Ohio State University under the tutelage of Mark Coleman. Everyone has seen how dominating Randleman can be. This has the making of the fight of the event.

The Pete Williams vs. Roberto Traven match seems to be scrapped so far.

Remember that the UFC will be aired at Gussie's for $5. It's good to have the UFC back to watch live again.

Warrior's Quest Update

**HOT OF THE PRESS (...well, actually off the phone)**

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Tito Ortiz, will be joining UFC veterans Chuck Liddell and Ken Shamrock at the Warrior's Quest this Saturday, August 25. Tickets are going fast in the VIP section because of the buzz of Ken Shamrock. I think that the sales are going to blow up when word gets out that the Huntington Beach Bad Boy is going to be there. Radio ads are supposed to be updated today or tomorrow so if you have not gotten your tickets, you better act fast.

The press conference and weigh-ins for Warrior's Quest will be at Players Sports Bar in Aiea (Above Dixie's Grill, I think) on Friday at 3:00 pm. Fans are welcome to view a weigh-in and press conference. There is a good chance that Tito, Chuck, and Ken will be there as well.

Royler and Margarida

Royler is scheduled to come to Hawaii September 11 for about a week. Margarida is scheduled to fight in a superfight at the Relson Gracie US Nationals on October 20, 2001. His opponent is not yet confirmed, but Relson is thinking about having Margarida fight Marcio Corletta who beat Pe de Pano in the worlds this year. Corletta is about 10 kg (22 lbs) heavier than Margarida, but Margarida is the current absolute champ. Margarida is supposed to come to Hawaii during the first week of October.

August FCF is out!

The August issue of Full Contact Fighter is now released and covers the last Superbrawl including comments from the Inoues and Tigre. I have not seen it in Tower Records, but make sure you ask for it there and if they get enough inquires, they probably will carry it.

Grappler's Quest NY

Newly promoted Nova Uniao black belt, Marc Laimon, is set to compete in a 4-Man tournament at the Grappler Quest Nationals. Marc has competed in our state or international tournament as a purple belt and showed his skills. He has a very technical game and also has tough competitors to face. I have never heard of Rodolfo Amaro da Silva, but his resume looks impressive. Laimon has been against some major names and has shown that he can hang with anyone with or without the gi. Good luck to Marc!

The Grapplers Quest National Championships to feature a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Mega-Superfight between, National Judo Champion, Edson Carvalho and Gracie Barra Black Belt and Mundial Star, Flavio Almeida!
This should be a very interesting battle of styles. Carvalho, 34 years old, is simply a master of stand-up judo, mixing in an array of BJJ and Judo ground skills, walks into this match with an arsenal of grappling tools.
Flavio "CACHARRINHO" Almeida walks into this fight after an impressive performance at this year's Mundials.

Tito and Vitor Story

Go to the Abu Dhabi page for a brief history of the upcoming battle between UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Tito Ortiz and Vitor Belfort.

Also, there is an interesting interview with Eugene "Wolf" Jackson who will fight Renzo Gracie Black Belt, Ricardo Almeida and a funny interview with big man (and funny guy) Josh Barnett.

Hoffman off Team Extreme

A destroyer of a man, Bobby Hoffman, who has had huge success in many different style MMA events is now no longer managed by Extreme Challenge promoter, Monte Cox. All of Cox's fighters that he manages are under the management team name of Team Extreme. Hawaii fans might remember Hoffman in the Super Brawl 8 man heavyweight tournament. Hoffman, a striker with limited ground skills, made it to the finals and lost to AMC big man, Josh Barnett. What made Hoffman stand out in that tournament was that in the semi-finals, he met the fastest rising heavyweight star presently, Heath Herring. Herring got Hoffman in a reverse keylock or kimura and broke Hoffman's shoulder, but that didn't stop him. Hoffman ate the pain, kept on fighting, and eventually won that match. Hoffman has also won many Rings events both in the US and in Japan.

From Team Extreme:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hoffman is Dropped from Team Extreme

Bobby Hoffman, current King of the Cage heavyweight champion and a veteran of UFC, RINGS and Extreme Challenge, has been dropped from Team Extreme by manager Monte Cox.
Cox said he will no longer manage Hoffman and that he is completely free to seek representation elsewhere.
Team Extreme features many top fighters, including: Pat Miletich, Jens Pulver, Matt Hughes, Jeremy Horn, Dave Menne, Sean Sherk, LaVerne Clark, Rich Franklin, Ben Earwood, Joe Doerksen, Jason Black, Tom Sauer, Kerry Schall, Jermaine Andre, CJ Fernandes and Jennifer Howe.

Saulo Off the Team

I have just received word that Saulo Riberio, a Royler Gracie Black Belt, is out of the Relson Gracie team. It is unsure at this point if he is even on Royler's team. He competed in the 2001 worlds without a Relson or Royler patch, only Rickson patches. He went up to train with Rickson for two weeks before the worlds. It seems as though he is now a member of the Rickson Gracie Association. With him, Chris Blanke, a former association member of Relson, is now no longer a part of the team as well. This had nothing to do with his two losses this year and hopefully Royler and Relson can get Saulo back with them again.

Royler in Hawaii

Relson told me this morning that the tentative date for Royler coming down is September 12. More info later.

Joao Roque Wins in Deep 2001

Nova Uniao black belt, Joao Roque armbarred Takehiro Murahama of Osaka Pro-Wrestling in the Japan Deep 2001 event held on August 18, 2001. This was a semi main event in the 69 kg and under class. Murahama previously fought Royler Gracie. Congratulations to a very cool and technical guy!

UFC is on at Gussie's

UFC 33 is a go for Gussie's by the airport on September 28, 2001. The satellite is in place and ready to go. The admission is going to be a cheap $5 and you have people serving you while you sit back with your friends (you don't have to clean up the house), relax, and enjoy the fight. This will be a good one. If you haven't seen the NEW UFC, you are going to be in for a surprise. It is a very high quality production and interesting profiles of the fighters. The last one was great and I'm sure this one will be no different. The UFC is supposed to be on Pay-per-view, but I have not received confirmation that it will be aired. TimeWarner owns Oceanic cable and may Veto the showing of the UFC even if In-Demand is the same company they utilize to play movies.

Mark Coleman to Face Minotauro
in
Pride 16
Sept. 24, 2001
Osaka Castle Hall (Osaka, Japan)

The first match announced is a big one. The defending Pride Grand Prix Champion, multiple UFC Champion, and number one ranked heavyweight in the world, Mark "The Hammer" Coleman faces the fastest riser from the BJJ world and King of Rings Champion, Rodrigo " Minotauro" Nogueira. Nogueira has been very impressive in his last fights showing both a solid stand up and technical ground game. Everyone considers Coleman the king of the wrestlers and he has been working on his stand up with Pat Miletich off and on. This should be a great match becuase Nogueira has shown that he can fight off of his back and has solid leg kicks.

Suggested Rules Modified

The rules that we have written have been modified. I'm not sure if you will notice the changes, but I have added to the half guard advantage rule, mount and back mount, and cross. Thanks in advance for all your suggestions. We have yet to receive one. We can't be that perfect, or can we...?

BJ Penn off John Lewis Valetudo Team?

There is a rumor circulating that BJ has pulled himself off of the Lewis Valetudo team because Lewis was not looking out for his best interests and was treating him like a student when they are training partners. I have yet to talk to BJ or John regarding this matter. Once I hear something official, I will post it.

RITC Sanctioned in Arizona !!!
(Rage in the Cage)

With the major movement to gain acceptance of the boxing and athletic commissions, every state that is won over is a major accomplishment on the way to national wide approval of MMA. So far New Jersey, Las Vegas, Iowa, Alabama, Hawaii, and California all hold MMA events on a regular basis. Now you can add Arizona as you will read in the article below.

Six weeks of anticipation culminated at a public hearing before the Arizona State Boxing Commission on Friday, August 10. Promoter Roland Sarria's license was unanimously approved by the Commission. An exuberant Sarria promptly announced that RITC XXX would take place on Wednesday evening, September 12 at Celebrity Theatre. In response to this great news and to acknowledge the continued support of RITC fans during this period, he further announced that all seats will cost only $20 for RITC XXX with open seating on a first come basis. With this major hurdle behind us, our focus now shifts
to providing the best show possible.

The Wednesday, September 12 date is firm. Details for RITX XXX will be released as they become available. Please visit www.rageinthecage.com for up to the minute information.

Pete Williams out of UFC

One of the match ups that I was looking forward to in the next UFC was Pete Williams of the Lion's Den versus Ricco Rodriguez. Due to a shoulder injury, Pete Williams is out. Ricco's opponent has not been named yet, but there is talk that Roberto Traven, Alliance Black Belt and world champion is being asked to step up. One more fight has been added, Renzo Gracie Black Belt, Ricardo "Cacharrao" Aleimida versus Eugene "Wolf" Jackson. It's the Big Dog versus the Wolf.

UFC is set for Friday, September 28, 2001 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Margarida to Fight at the Relson Nationals

Margarida who is the current black belt absolute champion will be competing in a black belt superfight at the Relson Gracie Nationals in Columbus, Ohio on October 20. What's even better, there is talk that Margarida will come to Hawaii to teach classes and train.

I really am looking forward to learning Margarida's game. He is a submitter and that's hard to come by these days.

Royler Coming to Hawaii?

There has also been talk that Royler Gracie will come to Hawaii to teach.

We have heard these rumors before, but hopefully it will come true this time. It's been too long since Royler visited us here.

Grandmaster Godin Dies

Grandmaster Godin was very influential to many martial artists in Hawaii as stated in the article below. He was the former instructor (not sure if that's PC) for the current Grandmaster of the Universal Kempo empire as well as many top instructors in Hawaii and probably beyond. Although we're not Karate or Kempo guys, I know that he was a very influential person to many people in these types of arts. I found this Honolulu Star Bulletin this morning.

Local martial arts master Godin dies at age 64

Martial arts legend Walter L.N. Godin, born March 21, 1937 in Honolulu, passed away Tuesday.

Godin, a 10th degree red belt professor in the art of Chinese Kempo, was one of the driving forces on Oahu for promoting full-contact fighting during the sport's early phases in the 1970s.

Godin dedicated his life to the art of Chinese Kempo with a career that spanned more than four decades.

Godin taught many people in the Islands and abroad, including Elvis Presley. Godin is also credited as the co-founder of the art Kara-Zen-Po Go Shin Jitsu, a fighting style that is famous on the East Coast.
