Quote of the Day

Do the kinds of things that come from your heart. When you do you won't be dissatisfied, you won't be envious, you won't be longing for someone else's things. On the contrary, you'll be overwhelmed with what comes back.

Suggested Tournament Rules

Ranking: Each Team Captain/Instructor shall rank his team members in order to ensure that the number 1 and 2 players on the team do not meet except in the finals. If no ranking is submitted, competitors will be placed in the keys randomly with an attempt to separate the same team within each key/division as much as possible.

Judging/Scoring - Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Points System:
Points System Summary:
Clean takedown - 2 points
Sweep - 2 points
Knee on stomach for 3 seconds - 2 points
Pass opponent's guard - 3 points;
Mounted position - 4 points;
Back Mount with Hooks in - 4 points

Note: To gain points for position, the competitor must show clear control for 3 seconds. Referees are encouraged, but NOT required to count the seconds out loud (e.g. One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three).

Points will be accumulated throughout the match. Matches can be won by:
1. The first competitor to reach 12 points.
2. A submission.
3. The competitor with the most points at the end of the time limit.
Note: In the event of a tie in points and advantages, the referee will make a judgment based on aggressiveness, effectiveness, and near submissions (if no advantages were given). This tournament rewards competitors that want to submit their opponent.

Advantages: Advantages are similar to points and are rewarded for submission attempts that posed a real threat to the other fighter, nearly completed takedowns, near sweep, near passes etc.. No amount of advantages is greater than a point. Any player with the top position who makes no attempt to advance will be viewed as inferior to player in the guard position who is making attempts at advancing their position or attempting submissions.

Team Points:
1st place - 5 points
2nd place - 3 points
3rd place - 1 point

Team Prize Money:
1st place team - $5,000
2nd place team - $3,000
3rd place team - $1,000

Team Title Awarding Criteria: If there is a tie in the team point standings, the team with the most medalists (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers) that win by submission in their final match will be declared the winner. If there is still a tie, the teams will split the respective purse.

Example: Team A and Team B has 2 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze. Of these five placers, Team A's competitors won their medal with 3 submissions (e.g. the two gold medalist and bronze medalists all won their final match by submission). Of Team B's competitors, only one won by submission (e.g. the bronze medalist won by submission, the two golds won by points). Therefore, Team A will win the team title over Team B.

General Rules:
Team Captains or instructors are responsible for their team members knowing and understanding the rules of the tournament. There will be a rules clinic after the weigh-ins on the night before the tournament to discuss various scenarios or questions regarding the rules.

No Stalling - The referee will issue warnings for the 1st offense of stalling (e.g. backing out of the guard without engaging, butt scooting, fleeing the ring to avoid takedown/submission attempts, holding an opponent down and not doing anything, etc.). The 2nd offense will result in a 2 Point deduction. A 3rd offense will result in a disqualification.

No holding of both sleeves of your opponent while in the guard (e.g. spider guard) for more than 10 seconds. This is to encourage movement and discourage stalling in a match.

There will be no grabbing inside the sleeves or pant legs of your opponent. You may grab within your own sleeves or pants legs (for sleeve chokes, etc).

The cross side position can only be held for thirty seconds in one static position before a position change is necessary. A position change example that is acceptable is cross side 90° to your opponent and changing to the north/south position. Any hold longer in one position will be considered stalling and will be punishable by the rules stated above.

Positional changes where the competitor on the top ends up on the bottom in closed guard will NOT be considered a sweep and will be rewarded with an advantage (e.g. bump and roll from mount ending up in closed guard).

Sweep points will be given when the competitor utilizes technique to reverse his position. Total power moves (e.g. grab opponent's belt and collar from cross side and throwing him over) will NOT be rewarded with sweep points. This tournament rewards technique, not power.

Takedowns that end up in the half guard and then transitions into a cross side position or if the competitor takes down his opponent and ends up in cross side will NOT be rewarded with points for the pass of the guard.

Points will only be rewarded for passing the guard if the competitor starts in-between both knees or legs or their opponent and then obtains a chest-to-chest secured cross side position.

Both competitors will receive points if one competitor initiates a takedown and is immediately switched in position and ends up on the bottom (e.g. double leg to monkey flip). If the forward progress of the initial attempt is stopped and then the other competitor counters the takedown with a takedown of their own, only the counter takedown will be scored.

Pass the guard points will only be awarded when starting from the full guard and obtaining chest to chest position for three seconds. There will be no points awarded if the bottom competitor, from a cross side or mounted position, recovers half guard only to lose his position and give up cross side. The bottom competitor will have to obtain full guard in order for the top competitor to gain pass the guard points.

If the competitor partially passes his opponent's guard and ends up in half guard and puts his opponent on his back , then his opponent recovers the full guard, the top competitor will receive an advantage. If the bottom opponent stays on his side while in half guard and recovers the full guard, no advantage for the top competitor will be awarded. Both passing points and advantages will not be awarded to the competitor for the same attempt.

If a competitor jumps from a standing position to half guard and their opponent passes the guard, the top competitor will be awarded with an advantage. In order to gain pass points, the full guard must be recovered and then passed to a chest to chest cross side for three seconds.

If a competitor passes the guard and goes immediately to knee in the belly before going chest to chest for the cross side, points will be given for both the knee in the belly (2 points) and the cross side (3 points) for a total of 5 points.

If a competitor goes from the guard directly to the mount, the competitor will be rewarded with 3 points for the pass and 4 points for the mount (total of 7 points).

Knee in the belly points shall be only given once for each side of the opponent's body that the knee in the belly is applied. For example, if a knee in the belly is applied with the right knee and then the competitor switches over to the other side of his opponent and applies the knee in the belly with the left knee, he would have reached the maximum number of knee in the belly points (2+2). In order to gain more points from the knee in the belly, the competitor will have to return to the guard and pass again.

The same point rule stated above holds true for the mount and back mount. For every time the guard is passed, only one set of mount and back mount points shall be awarded.

The referee has the discretion to call a match for use of excessive force, i.e. competitor refuses to release pressure after opponent submits, or opponent refuses to submit and the referee believes that the submission will cause immediate damage or injury. The referees and judges will be shown maximum respect at all times. Their decisions are final and will not be disputed. This is to ensure the safety of the competitors.

All submissions are allowed as defined in international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition such as the World Championships (Campeonato Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu) and the Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championships. For clarification, there will be no neck cranks, chokes using the hand grabbing the throat, knee bars, heel hooks, and other twisting leg locks in any division.

If the competitors are near the edges of the ring, they will be dragged to the center. If the competitor fall off of the mat or end up in a position where the referee cannot reasonably replace the same position in the middle of the mat, the competitors will be restarted in the standing position. Points will NOT be given for takedowns started near the edge of the mat and continuing off the mats. This is to protect and ensure the safety of the competitors.

No strikes, biting, eye gouging (includes chin or anything else in the eye socket), head butting, small joint manipulation (finger or toe locks), hand around throat, hair pulling, or ear pulling.

No unsportsmanlike conduct allowed as observed by referee or tournament staff (includes spitting, use of foul language, obscene gestures, etc.). Gradual force must be used for all submission techniques.
Warnings will be given for unsportsmanlike conduct. Repeat offenders will be disqualified and will be required to leave the premises.

Gi's or kimonos are required. All sleeves must have enough play to have four fingers (approximately 3 inches) inserted throughout the length of the sleeve up to the arm pit. Sleeves and pant legs bottoms must be within four fingers of a wrist of an outstretched arm and ankle. All gi's that do not comply must be changed immediately or match will be forfeited with no refund of entry fee. All collars and play in the gi must be standard as determined by the tournament officials.

Wrestling shoes CANNOT be used.

Slamming of your opponent is not allowed. It is illegal to slam a competitor on the ground in order to escape a submission attempt. Lifting takedowns are not considered slamming, unless a competitor attempts to throw someone on their head or neck intentionally and the referee determines that there is an intent to injure another competitor. If it is determined by the referee that a competitor is intentionally dropping or slamming their opponent on their head or neck, the referee or tournament officials have the discretion to immediate disqualify the competitor or penalize the competitor with point deductions.

Fabio Gurgel Retires

One of the few from the old school of Jiu-Jitsu that was still competing, Fabio Gurgel of the Alliance team announced his retirement from sport competition. For MMA fans, you probably remember him from his epic fight with Mark Kerr or his impressive performance in the UFC. Gurgel was one of the three Gracie Jiu-Jitsu representatives on Gracie in Action 1 in the fights in the ring against the Luta Livre fighters. He also has a video tape series out that was supposed to be very good as well. When I was in Brazil last year, I bought his BJJ book on the basics. It was all in Portuguese, but it was more for the collector's value than anything else. It was amazing that Gurgel could still compete and win against all this new techniques and young lions. I believe he retires as a four time black belt world champion. He will be concentrating on promoting various BJJ events, hopefully including his professional circuit where sport players get paid to win and probably be involved with more Rio vs. Sao Paulo BJJ matches since he runs one of the more successful schools in Sao Paulo.

Grandmaster Godin Dies

Grandmaster Godin was very influential to many martial artists in Hawaii as stated in the article below. He was the former instructor (not sure if that's PC) for the current Grandmaster of the Universal Kempo empire as well as many top instructors in Hawaii and probably beyond. Although we're not Karate or Kempo guys, I know that he was a very influential person to many people in these types of arts. I found this Honolulu Star Bulletin this morning.

Gracie Humaita Website

The "Original" Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school in Humaita, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil now has a website. The school is run by Royler and Rolker Gracie and was the bascially the birth place of many top BJJ instructors and fighters. As you walk in, there are years of history on the walls including many old trophies, medals, and pictures of Renzo, Ralph, the Machados, as well as young Gracies. The school is not in the greatest shape, but it is a place that you may want to visit just to say that you have been there. Check out their new website!

Need Help

One of the good things about having a page that many people view is when you need help with something I can just ask and may get many eyes looking for me.I am looking for a 17" all aluminum two or three piece all aluminum rim that can be cut and welded to my existing rim. The outside of the rim (facing the street) can be busted or trashed, but the inside of the rim (facing the underneath of the car) must be in good condition (not warped). One of my rims for my Integra has a crack that I had previously welded, but it did not work. So my welder said that he needs another rim to cut in half and weld to my rim. If anyone knows someone with a spare 17" all aluminum (not one piece, cast) rim that they would like to get rid of, please contact me. It cannot be an alloy because aluminum is very sensitive to heat and the dissimilar metals would be nearly impossible to weld. If you also have any leads on who to try (maybe a friend that has some spar rims), I would appreciate it as well. I am getting it welded at Freddie's Rims, went to Larry's Muffler's in Waipahu yesterday, am going to call Eurosport probably tomorrow, and am going to check out a place on Republican St. on Monday.

Thanks: Mike

Mega Fight

Ken Shamrock's first NHB show went ahead with some success. It was held in the Tropicana in Jersey and he was charging a good sum of money for seats. With a change in main events, Ken Shamrock fought Sam Adkins (yup UFC veteran and where is he now candidate). UFC stud Phil Baroni also fought and won an easy fight. Relson Gracie team member Joe Priole fought the underrated Vernon "Tiger" White and lost by referee stoppage in the second round. Hats off to Joe who lasted two rounds with a guy that Mario Sperry couldn't finish in his Australian NHB fight. Priole was cornered by instructor and great guy, Steve Maxwell. Take a look on the Full Contact Fighter Website for some pictures of the fight.

Verizon Problems

If it isn't one thing, it's another. I was having trouble receiving my mail and uploading the news page so I called my ISP for tech support. They told me that Verizon is having a problem with one of their pipelines which is causing problems on various ISPs. They said that Verizon is working on it and hopefully it will be up soon. Seeing this news post will let you know why there was yet another delay in the news.

UFC 33 Press Conference Yesterday

For those who couldn't attend the UFC press conference at the House of Blues in LA yesterday, here's the run down. Jens Pulver, the lightweight champ could not show up due to illness so they were left with Tito Ortiz, Vitor Belfort, Dennis Hallman, and Carmen Electra. Tito announced that Vitor's ex-instructor, Carlson Gracie, will be in his corner when he faces Vitor in the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino in Las Vegas. It will be interesting to see how the split from the Brazilian Top Team will affect Belfort and what type of style he will bring in the ring, the power puncher or the ground and pound. It should be very difficult for Vitor to take Tito down so we'll see if he comes out swinging.

Interesting Weight Control Article

This article is in today's Honolulu Star Bulletin stating how exercise can reduce the possibility or severity of diabetes. Various reports stated that as little as a 30 minute walk every day can drastically increase your health against a variety of illnesses. No matter how busy you are, you can at least squeeze out 30 minutes a day. Take the dog for a walk, do some Tae Bo, give your kids liking (kidding), etc. I read a report saying that, if I remember correctly, that Hawaii is the second most healthy state. Let's keep it that way.

Exercise, dietfight mid-life diabetes. Hawaii joined in a national study that found healthy lifestyles can reduce the onset of Type 2 diabetes.10 million Americans are judged at high risk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Helen Altonnhaltonn@starbulletin.com
Posted in the Honolulu Star Bulletin on August 9, 2001

DIET AND EXERCISE can dramatically reduce chances of getting type 2 diabetes for an estimated 10 million high-risk Americans, including many Hawaii residents, a national study shows.Intensive lifestyle changes for participants in a clinical trial reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. Also effective in preventing the disease, but less so, was the drug metformin (Glucophage)."Clearly, lifestyle is very effective in reducing the rate of diabetes and medication is effective as well," said Dr. Richard Arakaki, University of Hawaii medical professor who conducted the Diabetes Prevention Program locally."The question is how do we take this information and get it out into the community and into public health considerations? Diabetes is considered nearly an epidemic across the country."Type 2 diabetes -- about 95 percent of all diabetes cases -- most commonly affects adults over age 40 and is associated with obesity, inactivity, family history of diabetes and ethnicity.Cases have tripled in the past 30 years, due largely to a ballooning obesity rate. The Diabetes Prevention program was conducted by 26 mainland medical centers, the UH John A. Burns School of Medicine and The Queen's Medical Center. The 3,234 participants included 74 Hawaii volunteers, ages 25 to 85. All had impaired glucose tolerance, a condition that often progresses to diabetes.Hawaii has a higher rate of diabetes than the national average, primarily because of ethnic factors, Arakaki said.An estimated 9 to 10 percent of Hawaii's population has diabetes compared with 6 to 8 percent nationally, he said. Hawaiians especially have a twofold to threefold increase compared to the national average, Arakaki said. The findings, released today, were hailed by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson:"In view of the rapidly rising rates of obesity and diabetes in America, this good news couldn't come at a better time..."By promoting healthy lifestyles, we can improve the quality of life for all Americans and reduce health care costs dramatically."Participants initially were divided into four groups , one involving lifestyle changes with a low-fat diet and exercise, another with use of the drug metformin, one using the drug troglitazone combined with diet and exercise, and one group taking placebo pills instead of metformin. The troglitazone arm of the study was halted in June 1998 because of potential liver toxicity. The other phases ended a year early because the main research question was answered.Doing 30 minutes of physical activity daily with walking or other moderate intensity exercise, participants lost 5 to 7 percent of their body weight. Those randomly treated with metformin reduced their risk of getting type 2 diabetes by 31 percent.Participants all were overweight, with an average body mass index (BMI) of 34, and had impaired glucose tolerance.About 29 percent of those taking placebo pills developed diabetes during a three-year follow-up period compared with 14 percent in the diet-exercise group and 22 percent of those taking metformin.Arakaki said an estimated 20 million people have impaired glucose tolerance and will move on to diabetes. "We obviously need to do something."The research program is funded until next June, and hopefully will continue for another five years, he said. The researchers will look at the long-term effect of measures to prevent diabetes and examine risks and rates of heart disease and stroke.Arakaki said the $174 million research program represents "a major step toward the goal of containing and ultimately reversing the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in this country."Every year a person can live free of diabetes means an added year of life free of the suffering, disability and medical costs incurred by this disease."

John Spiker Wins Two National Championships

My Shobukan Judo club teammate, John Spiker, has reached his 19th and 20th junior national championship back to back. This guy is incredible with his throws and throws me around everytime I play with him both in wrestling and in judo. He is one of the most complete judo guys that I have trained with as far as variety of good throws. Check out this article on him in the Honolulu Advertiser. Congratulations!

Spiker can't be beat in either ring
By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer
Posted August 7, 2001

St. Louis School junior Jonathan Spiker, shown throwing Seth Char, has the potential to compete in the Olympics, according to a national judo observer. Cory Lum of the Honolulu Advertiser.

How's this for a comeback.Jonathan Spiker of 'Aina Haina took time off from national judo competition to concentrate on wrestling during his first two years of high school. He went 76-0 for St. Louis, won two state championships, plus seven more wins and the championship at the World of Wrestling tournament in Reno, Nev., in April. Then he returned to judo, and, last month:Won the U.S. Judo Inc.'s National Junior Olympics 66 kilogram (145 pounds) championship and was named Outstanding Player in the boys 15-16 age division in Louisville, Ky., on July 22. Won the same weight and age class at the U.S. Judo Association's national championships at Toledo, Ohio, on July 28. The junior national championships were Spiker's 19th and 20th since he was 8 years old and won his first of four "triple crowns" - junior judo's three major national championships. This year he didn't attend the first of three nationals because of the cost of travel."It gets more challenging as you move up in age groups," Spiker said. "There were other national champions in both tournaments."In fact, in his first match at the Junior Olympics Nationals, Spiker defeated the champion of the U.S. Judo Federation nationals, the one he didn't attend in California the week before. In the final match, he beat the Canadian junior champion.Spiker won all five of his bouts in the Junior Olympics by a full point. To earn a full point, one must pin his opponent for 25 seconds, throw him so that he lands completely on his back, or force him to submit with a choke hold.At the Junior Olympics, Spiker earned his full-point victories in a single day with three pins and two throws, and was an overwhelming choice as Outstanding Player."He has a real beautiful throw with speed and force," said Lowell Slaven, tournament director at the Junior Olympics. "You don't see if often when you are going against the best from all over the nation. He was far superior to the competition."Lloyd Migita, instructor at Honolulu's Shobukan Judo Club since 1956, has coached 47 individuals who have won national championships, including 1996 Olympian Clifton Sunada.Migita has coached Spiker and his two brothers, Jason and Jared, who were also triple-crown winners."Jonathan's biggest asset," Migita says, "is his desire to win. When his timing is on, he's awesome. At other times, he struggles with his timing, but he takes advantage of others' mistakes and still does enough with his desire to win."Migita also credits Spiker's intelligence - he's a straight A student at St. Louis. "We do a lot of advanced technique, we have a special class in 'mind development' where I work on the psychology of winning, visualization and affirmation. No other club in the U.S. uses the techniques we do and intelligence plays a very important part."USA Judo's Slaven, who has been a judo referee and coach for 40 years, notes that in addition to his excellent technique, Spiker is "a super nice kid, real polite. You don't see that a lot any more.""I expect to see him representing us in the Olympics if he stays active. He definitely has the potential," Slaven said.Spiker's next goal is a little closer. School started Monday (he is a junior) and, as he put it, "I need to get ready for wrestling."AT THE WORLDS: Hawai'i's three representatives at the World Championships in Munich, Germany, were all eliminated without a victory. Olympian Amy Tong lost two straight in the women's 78kg division, Taylor Takata lost two by ippon in the men's 60kg and Neal Takamoto lost once by ippon in men's open. . . . Takata, an Iolani School graduate, will take the fall semester off from San Jose State to train at the Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs. . . . Jonathan Spiker has participated in 21 national championships and won 20. He finished second once when he was 9. In his 20 tournament victories, he was not scored upon.

Chow Family Dominates

The Chows are another family who lives judo and also practices with me at Shobukan. Their mother, as stated below, is a world class competitor and champion, their father is a doctor, judo black belt, and assistant instructor at Shobukan. Dr. Chow has been a very big help for me to learn the judo game and is one of the only two (the other is the main instructor, Migita Sensei) that argues against crappy calls against me when I used to compete in judo tournaments. Congratulations to all three.

Chows a triple threat in nationwide events
By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer
Posted August 7, 2001

The Chows - Melinda, 7, Daniel, 11, and Christina, 8 - display the medals they won at three junior national tournaments this summer. Cory Lum o The Honolulu AdvertiserIn junior national judo, a triple crown is as good as it gets. That means winning the gold medal at the three major summer events - the national championships of the U.S. Judo Federation, Junior Olympics and U.S. Judo Association. Last month, the three Chow siblings of Kahala nearly scored a triple-triple crown. Daniel, 11, and Melinda, 7, both won all three championships. Christina, 8, won two and placed second in the third when she moved to a higher weight class so she wouldn't have to fight a Honolulu Shobukan Club teammate. It was the first national competition for Melinda, who had to get a waiver to compete in one of the tournaments that normally doesn't allow athletes younger than 7. She turned 7 on July 25. It was the first triple crown for Daniel, a Punahou sixth-grader who is in the younger half of the 11-12 age group in the under-75 pounds division. Last year he won two; his first national medal was silver at age 7. "It feels pretty good to accomplish something like this, the best in the nation in my division," Daniel said. It was the third time Christina, now in the 66-pound division, has won two golds. The Chow kids "didn't have any choice" but be exposed to judo, said their mother, Robin, who won a judo gold medal in the 1983 Pan American Games and was fifth in the 1982 Women's World Games, when she lived in Pittsburgh. "They've been coming to the dojo with us since they were babies. It's our family pastime," Robin said. She and her husband, Greg, are both assistant instructors and coaches at Shobukan Judo Club in Nu'uanu. "I watched one practice when I was 6 and decided I would try," Daniel said. He's been practicing three nights a week, two hours a night, ever since. Except for the month before the nationals, the Chows and other Shobukan judo members practiced every night. The 17-day trip to the three national tournaments took the Chows to Monterey, Calif., Louisville, Ky., and Toledo, Ohio. Christina, a fourth-grader at Kahala Elementary, said "It's a fun thing." But so is wrestling, ballet and soccer, in which she also participates, as well as an after-school learning center, Christina said.Daniel got home in time from nationals to start football practice with the Manoa Paniolos Pop Warner football team. He's a 75-pound outside linebacker, halfback and tight end. All three Chows also wrestle for the Punahou Pumas Juniors. Judo "isn't our whole life, but a major part of it," says mom Robin. "I think it's worthwhile for kids to learn the discipline and hard work and keep persisting, staying at something and not giving up as soon as things get a little tough." And, it keeps them in good physical shape."

TRIPLE SILVER
Valdez scores: Moanalua High junior Caylene Valdez placed second in all three national tournaments. "It was my last year of judo nationals," Valdez said. "I want to concentrate on wrestling." She is 59-0 in Hawai'i with two state high school championships in wrestling.

We are Finally Back Up!

That damn worm virus has taken our site down for a while (mostly because of precautionary reasons), but I guess everything is safe enough to allow access once again.

The only problem is that he is fighting in the upcoming K-1 USA show in Las Vegas this Saturday against Shannon Ritch. At this point, he has no plans to fight in the UFC.

Apology for the late posts

We are having trouble connecting to the server and can't retrieve our mail to Onzuka.com or upload the news page. Our host is working on it, but if you are reading this, it's probably fixed. The worm virus that has been targeting Microsoft based networks was threatening our web host server so our host shutdown all access to the server in order to protect it. We could not retrieve any mail or upload our website for the last two days, hence the lack of an updated webpage news section. I apologize to all of you loyal onzuka.com viewers that have pushed us over the 1000 hits a week mark. We're trying hard to keep the page interesting in order to keep the numbers up. We would like to attract sponsors to pay for some of our internet fees that we are eating every month, but so far no inquires. If you know anyone that would be interested, let us know and we can put a banner add for them for a small advertising fee.

Virus Warning

There has been a lot of publicity for the worm virus that is supposed to work it's way in to your computer. There's another virus that has been bothing us on a daily basis. We call it the "Hi, how are you doing. Here's something for you." Do not open this up. I am not sure what it does because I am not about to open it up and find out. The virus gets in to people's email address book and emails the virus to many people in your address book. Also, there is other virus that are going around networks, the FBI and Dead Presidents email. The best thing to always do is update your virus data file as much as possible. If you use McAfee, they have updates almost every other day. Make sure that you keep all the options active so that hopefully your virus scan program catches any other viruses. My McAfee didn't catch this virus, but if you don't know who the person is or the attached file looks funny (e.g. not a *.jpg, *.mpg, *.txt, *.zip) like a *.exe file, be very careful. The exe extention indicates an executable file or program that will install itself if you double click on it. As a general rule, as long as you don't open up the attachments, you should be pretty safe against viruses. If you think you can get a virus from just reading your email, don't worry too much.

Warrior's Quest Changes

I have just received word that the Warrior's Quest has some line up changes which will be posted as soon as I get the official information. If you are a fighter, you may want to contact Brennan Kamaka and inquire if he needs fighters.

Black Belt Promotions

This seems to be the year of black belts as Kai Garcia of Kauai, Bruno Ewald, also of Kauai, and Marc Laimon of Nova Uniao all got their black belts recently. Congratulations to all.

Mundial Summary

Thank God for Kid Peligro. He gives all the results much quicker than anyone else.

One thing that wasn't mentioned was that Daniel Moraes took the silver in this year's mundial. He will return to Hawaii very soon because he wants to watch a NHB event in Brazil. Here's his summary as reported on the Abu Dhabi Page:

Another edition of the greatest BJJ Tournament in the World was completed Sunday. The Black Belt results were already covered on Sunday. The theme of the party was "Youth has served notice!" , as most of the winners and runner-ups where under 27 years old. The only "old-guard" to win was Fabio Gurgel who closed the Heavy Division with teammate "Comprido". Margarida was the story of the Tournament with his winning the weight division and the absolute. Margarida is shown left taking his victory lap on his newly won Scooter.Of note: Yuki Nakai won his first match by a score of 11 x 0 against Mauricio Villardo only to lose the next match against eventual Feather winner "Fredson 'The King of the Mao de Vaca' (Cow-hoof) Paixao" via what else but a 'cow hoof' submission. Paixao went on to defeat Barbosinha by a collar choke and Fredson Alves in the finals by 2 point sweep. Ricardinho Vieira already confirmed to the World that he is a force to stay by beating perennial winner Robson Moura by points and then overtaking Robson's teammate for the title. Fernando "Boi" defeated Daniel Simoes to take the Super Heavy by 5 x 0.The final between Fernandinho "Terere" and "Shaolin" Ribeiro was a chess match. The two have fought each other before and respect is the operative word. The final result was a win by advantages. "Terere" was one of the main stories of the Tournament, as halfway through the event, a group of 50 kids entered the arena wearing t-shirts that said: "Uh,Terere", holding air baloons and singing "Uh Terere". These were kids from Terere's project "Meninos do Cantagalo", where the World Champion teaches and supports the training of Jiu-Jitsu in his home Slum of "Cantagalo". Terere has invested most of his money in this project for under-privileged people, including the car that he won with Comprido from the Sao Paulo league. More on that at a later date, but the fact remains that one of the heroes in the sport, Terere, is showing everyone how great he is for giving back to the community and that Jiu-Jitsu knows no boundaries. Terere, YOU ARE THE MAN!The two matches greatly awaited between "Margarida" and "Saulo Ribeiro" did not disappoint anyone. In the first one, for the Medium-Heavy finals Saulo took the fight to "Margarida" right away, he took the kid down and proceeded to attack the guard pass furiously. "Margarida" was not intimidated by the attacks of the 5 time World Champion and used his constant motion and counter attacks to frustrate and tire Saulo. The fight had to be restarted and Margarida quickly paid back the favor and took Saulo down and started his own attacks, Saulo appeared to gas as Fernando passed guard, put knee on the stomach and the submitted Saulo with a choke for an impressive win.In the finals of the Absolute, a sober and more strategical Saulo, fought a more cautious and calculating fight only to lose by 2 x 0 via takedown. It appeared to the experts that Saulo, in the first match, was determined to submit Margarida and may have underestimated the kid's prowess. The fact of the matter is that "Margarida" is really that good and people still underestimate him. Gurgel appeared to have done that in the Pan-Ams and Saulo in the first match. If you fight "Margarida" and don't give him the total respect and attention that he deserves, bad things will happen. As Comprido pointed out, the top four ranked guys in the Absolute, reached the semi-finals, and the four are going to be trading victories for a long time coming. You know for a fact that Saulo will be back! And so will Comprido and Pe de Pano and Margarida will for sure be there waiting to check and make sure making for great battles for a long time. And the big winner is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , its fighters and its fans.

Advanced Warning

As some of you know, I'm getting married on September 29. Therefore, as with all Jiu-Jitsu guys, there will be a knock down, drag out Bachelor's party. I was thinking about having it on Friday, September 21, but the NAGA submission grappling tournament is set for Saturday, September 22. Since there are reports that the Pride Hawaii (also set for the 22nd) is NOT going to happen. Many guys are planning on entering the NAGA and I didn't want them to compete with a hangover. I am leaning toward moving the Bachelor's party to Saturday, September 22. Make sure you clear up your schedules because if you haven't been to a Jiu-Jitsu Bachelor party, you definitely do not want to miss this one.One last thing, leave your handcuffs at home.

Thanks.
Mike

Killer Site

Global Training Report is a killer web site featuring very interesting interviews with many big name martial artist. The author visits various schools and writes about his experiences and performs interviews where he notes the many thoughts that he has during the interview which I think is an interesting touch. I just read part of his Rickson interview and BJ Penn interview and it was very enjoyable. Check it out.
