Quote of the Day

I know that everyone is still feeling the after effects of the World Trade Center attack, an attack not only on two (almost three) of our national symbols, but an attack felt by every single American. Please keep those we have lost, those who are looking for them and the rest of America in your prayers.

I have to say one thing, that to see every single American come together, looking for any way possible that they can help AND our nation turn our focus back on God is an incredible sight. Congress doubling the funds that President Bush asked for, people all over the country giving blood and donating food, supplies or money, basically every one trying to do their part to help. I got chills when I saw the NYC workers chant "USA, USA" when President Bush was there and people out there handing the firefighters and rescue workers food and water on television. I also get chills every single time I see an American flag waving in the wind.

My wife and I just bought and put up the only American flag that we could find, which is a flag commemorating 1776, because everything else was sold out. It made me happy to know that people rushed out and bought an American Flag for themselves. I figure that as long as it is an American Flag, any type of American Flag, it would help to show our support and to let people know that we are behind America 100%. I even built my own flag pole (with pulley system, of course) to hang the flag in front of my house because those were sold out too. Let me tell you that was the most expensive flag pole you ever saw, but it will stand up forever.

I have 100% confidence that when our adversary is known and the word is given, that our troops are going to kick the living shit out of each and every one of them responsible or anyone who helped the terrorist's cause, at least I hope that it goes that far. I don't think that it will ever come to it because of the quality and effectiveness of our military, but I stand ready to represent my family if they start to put procedures in place to re-enact the draft. Out of four boys in my family, my two older brothers are past the draft age requirements (I believe) and Mike is blind in one eye which disqualifies him too. I can tell you this, I will enlist well before they call my name in the draft to represent my family and my country.

I ran across a few quotes concerning this tragedy, which we will run in the coming days, but this one by FDR back in 1941, sums up the sentiment today. - Chris

"There is no blinking at the fact that that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God."

Franklin D. Roosevelt

Hawaii Airports Re-Open

All island airports are re-opened and all airlines are continuing their schedules (some more than others). Security has increased considerably as you can imagine, but at least people can start traveling between the islands again. Kauai was the last airport to re-open. Vehicles parked within 300 feet of an airport terminal will be towed. On Wednesday, the state towed cars at Kahului Airport that were within the security perimeter. Steak knives are no longer provided on flights, which is a great idea.

Expect delays in shipping of regular mail and express packages from UPS and FedEx.

There is a Honolulu/Maui ferry available at Pier 9. Sea Link, which normally operates ferry rides between Maui and Moloka'i, will continue service between Maui and O'ahu today. The ferry departs from Pier 9 at 7 a.m. and noon and makes stops at Moloka'i. The fare is $79.50 per person, including tax and fees. Call 808-667-2585.

For those who were going to the Downtown Aloha Festival tonight, it has been cancelled. It may be rescheduled for Sept. 28 (UFC day) or Oct. 1. The Waikiki Ho'olaule'a is still scheduled for Sept. 21 on Kalakaua.

Luke's Ok!

Luke just called me and he just made it home today. He told me that he was in the World Trade Center just 20 minutes before the first plane crashed in to Tower 1. He walks through the WTC on his way to work. He came down for water after dropping his stuff off at his office and saw Tower 1 on fire. He actually saw the second plane crash in to Tower 2 and saw both towers crumble to the ground. The people there originally thought that they were getting bombed and that the Empire State Building was next. He left his 60 story building that he works in and went to a smaller building to wait it out. The people there eventually took off and he got stuck in New Jersey because all the bridges were shutdown. Luckily, his sister lives there and he stayed with her. His family and girlfriend are all fine as well. The only problem was that even the pay phones didn't work so he couldn't tell anybody that he was ok.

Joel Gold of FCF Speaks Out

Joel Gold, the owner and editor of Full Contact Fighter Newspaper, who we both write for, is based in New York and is doing ok. He posted an editorial about the attacks that you may find interesting.

Ultimate Cowardice Strikes USA and FCF

We've all heard of the cowardly attack that was perpetrated on our nation early today by self-serving hate mongers that killed thousands of innocent men, woman and children. Two hijacked planes crashed into New York's twin towers and killed an undetermined amount of people at this time -- as many people are still missing. FCF has been hit hard as staff members had family and friends who were working in the towering landmarks at the time of the attack. One of whom has been thankfully confirmed as alive and well -- my cousin whose life was spared as he was able to escape the uncalled for terror -- but at this time the whereabouts of several others are uncertain. We are praying that they will be coming home.

Full Contact Fighter feels this action is the lowest form of cowardice and vows to help its country in any manner possible. We are confident that the USA will act swiftly in ending the reign of these cowards known as terrorists and the countries that house and protect them.

This is the most devastating thing to ever happen in my life -- Many people are dying and still other attacks are going on. My life has changed forever and no words at this time can describe my feelings and the sorrow for those families that lost their sons, daughters, mothers and fathers in such a senseless act -- my prayers go out to all, on the saddest day of my life.

Anyone able to donate blood, please call the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or your local hospital and see if and when they are able to take donations.

On a side note to all who have called and e-mailed us out of concern for our welfare, everyone at the FCF home office in New York are safe and sound, thank you for your concern. Phone circuits in the area are overloaded due to people checking on family and friends.

Matt Serra Interview

There is a interview on Renzo Gracie Black Belt and Beast from the East, Matt "The Terror" Serra on the Abu Dhabi Page. Matt will be facing Yves Edwards (who fought Rumina Sato here in Hawaii in Super Brawl) in the next UFC on Sept 28.

Nostradamus Quotes that are Surfacing

There are sure to be many Nostradamus quotes surfacing on the net and someone emailed me a link to a site that has an interesting angle on the validity of his predictions. Read on.

What these shows usually forget to tell you (until the credits are rolling at the end (when nobody is watching)) is that these are INTERPRETATIONS of Nostradamus' writing. Of course if they made a big deal about that and included a proper logical analysis of the Quatrains (using the Scientific Method) they would probably loose ratings since a lot of people seem to enjoy believing that there are supernatural forces always at work in the Universe which science cannot explain. Wether that is true is a great philosophical question, however the point is that when Nostradamus' writing's are put to the test (scientifically analysed), it shows that he really isn't as much as he has been built up to be.

At this point I would like to introduce to you what I call the "Infinite Monkey's Principle." Let's say that I have aquired an infinite amount of monkeys and an infinite amount of typewritters or word processors (It doesn't matter). Of course, as far as we know that is impossible to do (Unless you buy factory direct from me--send 500 trillion dollars to me (gold bullion only, liquid assets are not negotiable) But I digress... If these Infinite Amount of Monkeys are allowed to bang out whatever they want on the infinite typewriter, one of them will produce the complete works of Shakespear.

How? Simple if the Monkey's write random garbage but in an infinite amount, eventually because of the simple fact that it is inevitable (simple probability thought shows this).

How does this apply to Nostradamus? Well I will show you...

If I make say a thousand prophecies that are fairly abstract for example:

In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb

Well let us analyse this. For Example what does City of God mean? It could be Mecca, Medina, Rome, Jeruselum, Salt Lake City, or any holy city depending on your religion. What do I mean by thunder--a storm? War? EarthQuake? lots of stuff can be described by thunder. There are a lot of two brothers on this world (I think the Number runs among the Billions) and fortress edure's what--Besiegement, Famine, etc? What Great Leader? How will he succumb? To what?

Now let the prophecy rest for a few years. Add a couple thousand more. Eventually, one of them will fit close enought with events that have happened in the future that the prophecy will appear to come true. If you make enough prophecies and are intelligent enough to word them in such a way that they are abstract you become instant future see-er person. For example those psychics you see every year that make predictions for the year 199-whatever generally get one or two out of ten predictions right. It is because they are good guessers and that there is enough of them to make it seem like people can really predict the future.

I am not discounting the possibility of a sixth sense nor of the supernatural but I would like to state that there is no scientifically proven Psychic person in the world. Ever psychic that says that she or he is a psychic and has been put to the test has failed quite miserably. It is true. There is no discounting that fact.

Further more, the Scholar's of Nostradomas seem to be taking further and further leaps in logic when they interpret his writings. For example this is a link to a page in which a person claims that Nostredomus prophesised the breakup of Canada. Click here to judge for yourself.

Further more I was watching a 1970's movie on Nostredamus and it predicted that the Third World War began in 1994 and was well on it's way by 1999. (I am holding my breath. Oh no!). The people who "analyse" the Quatrains simply scan through history until they find an event that seems to fit with the quatrain.

Perhaps Nostredamus was a futurist. I do not know. Perhaps he suffered some sort of mental illness (hardly unusual in 16th century Europe). Maybe he just had nothing better to do with his time. I do not think though that, faced with the evidence that science has shown, he was a true Psychic who could see the future. Call me a skeptic but I believe the "Phrase Innocent Until Proven otherwise" should be used to regulate any phenomena in Nature. (In this case it would be Scientifically Explainable unless shown otherwise. Or in the Case of Psychics you are not a Psychic unless you can prove beyond reasonable doubt that you have these "powers")

"PANCRASE 2001 PROOF TOUR"

Marcelo makes another appearance in Japan against a UFC veteran and a killer in Tim Lajcik. Lajcik is a great wrestler and very hard puncher. This will certainly test Tiger on a couple of levels. One, if this is a Pancrase match, then no punches, only open hand slaps are allowed. This fight could be a Pankration match, then it would follow normal UFC type of rules. Two, if Lajcik catches Marcelo with a couple of those heavy hands, we will get to see if he will stay within the rules to finish the match. Good luck to Marcelo!

Tragedy in NYC

Our prayers go out to all the people in New York and Washington that was affected by this terrorist attack on the US. I cannot wait until the US finds out who is responsible for this tragedy because they will pay dearly for what they have done. I am glad that George W. Bush is the president because I think he has the balls to follow up on punishing the people who are at fault. Terrorism cannot be tolerated, especially on our own soil.

Please say prayers for everyone there and give blood if you are in the area or even if you are not in the area. Support your military because it's times like these that I am more than happy to pay taxes to be sure that we have all the training, equipment, and weapons necessary to properly defend our country.

Our best friend Luke works on Wall St. which is close to the World Trade Centers and I have still not heard from him. I left a message at his house as soon as I was told the news this morning. He is the closest person to the destruction that we know (which includes an uncle and a couple of aunts) and we pray that he is alright. He is one of my groomsmen in my wedding party and I don't want to lose a great friend.

Brazil Socking It to Traditional Martial Arts
Family of Champions Popularizes a Reinvention of Jiu-Jitsu

By Anthony Faiola
Washington Post Foreign Service
Saturday, September 8, 2001; Page A01

ITAIPAVA, Brazil -- Standing on the veranda of his vast ranch in a fighting kimono and black belt, Helio Gracie, 89, looked like Yoda meets Bruce Lee. "Strangle me!" he commanded. "Go on, take your best shot."

His guest politely declined, but Gracie would not take no for an answer. Not for nothing has he earned wn from Rio to Tokyo as the grandfather of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Even in Brazil, Latin America's largest nation and the most important martial arts center outside Asia, Gracie's skill is still rivaled by few, and his persistence by fewer.

"What? You think I'm fragile, eh?" barked the father of six black belts. "Don't make me laugh."

Reluctant hands enclosed the aged flesh of his throat, quickly tightening as the old man scoffed. But in a flash, he employed the trademark moves he first used more than 70 years ago when creating Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Planting his feet solidly on the floor, Gracie surged his bony hands upward with all the force of his balanced weight, breaking the grip on his throat and twisting back his attacker's arms with ease.

Such moves have allowed the Napoleon-size old master to overwhelm men twice his size through leverage and balance. They amount to a reinvention of the Japanese martial art.

"The Asians are famous for taking electronics and car designs and making them better," he said, laughing. "Well, we pulled the same trick. The Brazilians took their ancient martial arts and perfected them."

His is not idle bragging. In the martial arts, Brazil has become the new kid to knock your block off, thanks in large part to the Gracie clan. Here and abroad, Gracie's Brazilian jiu-jitsu has turned him and his sons into legends with their own line of posters, a monthly magazine and even trading cards.

Mechanics at gas stations who once lined their walls with pinups now sport action shots of the Gracies. In the United States, where three of Gracie's six sons have opened jiu-jitsu academies, Gracie's progeny are teaching their father's techniques to actors Nicolas Cage and Jim Carrey and to director Guy Ritchie, Madonna's husband. Over the past decade, the Pentagon, the FBI and other U.S. law enforcement agencies, including Maryland's Howard County Police Department, have contracted with Gracie's sons for courses in Brazilian-style combat and self-defense.

Martial arts experts say this nation of 170 million people has emerged as a world leader in the evolution of controlled hand-to-hand combat. Brazil, unlike most other nations in the Western Hemisphere, has a history steeped in the martial arts. Capoeira -- the only New World martial art -- was created by Brazil's African slaves in the 16th century and is now practiced professionally in at least 16 nations. Brazil is also a powerhouse in traditional Asian martial arts, having won various gold, silver and bronze medals in judo during the last three Olympic Games.

But the Brazilians, renowned for fusing foreign music with their own to create new sounds such as bossa nova in the 1960s, have done the same with Asian fighting styles. They did it by removing much of the spirituality and strict rules used in Asia, substituting technical innovations and a dose of hot-blooded aggression.

The "Brazilian School" has given rise to the controversially violent "no rules" fighting tournaments so popular here and now en vogue on U.S. pay-per-view channels. At the same time, the international success of local black belts has popularized Brazilian martial arts institutes in cities such as Boston, Madrid, London and Buenos Aires.

"The martial arts have become like music and soccer in Brazil," said Bernardo Conde, anthropologist and martial arts specialist at Rio de Janeiro's City College. "As Brazilians have innovated the martial arts, they've become one of our most successful cultural exports."

Since Brazilians tend to be slight of build, many have embraced the martial arts for personal safety and bragging rights in a nation with harsh urban violence, a Wild West-like frontier and a strong tradition of machismo. Many Brazilians, especially men, boast a swaggering mentality, admiring things big, dominant and extreme. Toss in a Los Angeles-like obsession with health and fitness, and martial arts fit the bill.

"If another man looks at your wife in the United States, you go and file a lawsuit, but in Brazil, you go and get in that guy's face," said Rorion Gracie, Helio Gracie's eldest son, who runs a Gracie Academy near Los Angeles. "If you're the smaller guy, you better know a martial art."

The popularity of martial arts here is evident along the streets of major cities. In Sao Paulo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, karate and judo schools have become ubiquitous. Afro-Brazilians with rippled abdomens practicing Capoeira, a highly acrobatic martial art that combines elements of African dance and music with combat, dot the white sandy beaches in the northeastern city of Salvador. More than 40,000 Rio residents practice Brazilian jiu-jitsu, sports authorities here say.

But what began as self-defense, critics say, has morphed into what some call a social menace. In Rio, for instance, a subculture of young, upper-class jiu-jitsu experts -- called "Pit Boys" for their aggression -- has become notorious in the local media for acts of violence, especially against gay men.

"Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not about self-defense. It is about the practice of violence," said Eugenio Ibiapino, a board member of Rio's Center Against Homosexual Discrimination. In one high-profile incident last year, one of Helio Gracie's great-nephews was involved in a jiu-jitsu attack against transvestites.

Brazilian gay rights leaders say that at least one in 10 incidents of gay-bashing in Rio, a city of 12 million, is related to jiu-jitsu fighters. "Anyone who says the Gracie family are sports heroes couldn't be further from the truth," Ibiapino said.

At Rio's 7,000-member Gracie Academy, Royler Gracie, one of Helio Gracie's jiu-jitsu champion sons, insisted that his family members are opposed to using their techniques in street attacks. They try, he said, to root out "bad seeds." But bad and goods seeds still sprout. And for better or worse, they were planted by Helio Gracie.

Born in Belem at the mouth of the Amazon in 1912, the son of a foreign service officer, Gracie grew into a slight and sickly teenager. But then Maeda Koma came into his life.

The Japanese immigrant who had sought his fortune in an Amazon gold rush ended up teaching Japanese jiu-jitsu. Gracie signed up and practiced nonstop, but he could not beat his larger opponents. Gradually he formulated a new theory.

Asian jiu-jitsu has always included leverage, but at more advanced levels, power and physical prowess also became important. Martial arts experts say Gracie changed that by perfecting new ways to balance himself and employing new forms of leverage that further reduced jiu-jitsu's reliance on size and strength.

Discovering strategic spots on his body -- on his feet, hands, knees -- he braced himself in ways that allowed him to generate greater force. He quickly began winning prizefights and incorporating other martial arts moves into what would become Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He rose to massive fame, particularly after winning what is widely considered the world's first "no rules" fighting tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 1932.

His sons followed in his footsteps, earning the clan greater acclaim. His sons do most of the fighting these days, but eager students are still willing to pay the old master more than $100 an hour for private classes. Gracie teaches now and then, but mostly he enjoys watching his black-belted boys.

"I've rendered a lot of men unconscious in my day," said Gracie, reminiscing at his ranch here west of Rio. "And I am proud when I see my sons do the same today."

Royler Seminar Day 2 Review

After an interesting first day seminar, I was enticed enough to take the second seminar by Royler on Saturday. North Shore Jiu-Jitsu instructor and black belt, Joao Moraes and newly promoted black belt, Bruno Ewald from Kauai came in for the seminar as well. To my surprise, Royler went over the same techniques that he did the first day. He threw in about two or three moves that he did not teach the day before. I expected the next day to be all new material, especially since each seminar was only two hours long. As you can imagine, I was very disappointed in the lack of new techniques shown for my two days of money. I talked to Royler about this and he said that he did not want to flood the class with many new techniques and that many people didn't take the first days class. I told him that he has so many moves that I want to learn from him because we are the same size and he is very effective against all the top guys on the scene today. No luck. I look forward to Royler returning to do give more seminars, but this is the last time that I take two seminars on the same trip. I took very detailed notes and will be drilling the moves that he taught, but did not feel that I needed to pay money to go over the same moves again. I tried to make the most doing the same moves and tried to ask all the questions that I could think of, but both of us broke down each move pretty well on Friday. We definitely have to fine tune these moves, but we have a pretty good understanding of the moves he taught on the first day. In summary, thumbs up for Day 1, thumbs down for Day 2.

For all of you that were wondering, here's the final numbers and info of the seminars:

Friday had 40 guys
Saturday had 47 guys
Participants were from all the Gracie academies (main, Aiea, Kauai, and Kahuku), Nova Uniao, North Shore Jiu-Jitsu, Team Tiger, Longman, and JKD Unlimited.

After the seminar, Royler raffled off his gi which was won by Chris Lowry of North Shore Jiu-Jitsu. All who took the seminar was automatically entered in the raffle.

Congratulations DC Maxwell!

DC Maxwell, wife of Steve and partner in Maxercise gym and Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Association school, has won a gold medal in her weight class and a silver in the absolute in the women's division of the International Master's Jiu-Jitsu Tournament in Brazil. DC was recently promoted to purple on her last trip here in Hawaii. Both Steve and herself put many twenty year olds to shame as far as conditioning and build. We hope to congratulate her in person when we see them at the Relson Gracie US Nationals on October 20, 2001.

Additional Pride 16 Matches

Sept 24 2001
Osaka-Jo Hall (Osaka, Japan)

Instead of waiting for Pride 17, the promoters have decided to add the following matches on this card. A good card just got better. It will be interesting to see Don Frye return to action and see if he has any ring rust.

Don Frye vs Gilbert Yvel
Igor Vovchanchyn vs Semmy Schilt
Guy Mezger vs Ricardo Arona

Royler Seminar Day 2 Review Coming

I ended up taking both seminars that Royler gave here. I'll have a review coming, but I'll take a day to relax and think about the seminar before I post my review. I'm going to give my opinion and since I paid for both seminars and this is my page, I am free to write my honest NHB opinion so stay tuned.

Pride Rumors

Here's some interesting rumors for upcoming Pride shows. Pride continues to make great match ups of fighters. I kind of wish they would stay away from the rematches, but they are a Japanese organization and want their guys on top. Read on and hopefully, these match ups will come through.

The world eagerly awaits the announcement of the final card for PRIDE's next offering on September 24th, 2001. However, the PRIDE 17 show, scheduled for November 3rd, 2001 at the Tokyo Dome appears to be taking shape behind the scenes. With the potential rematch of Sakuraba vs. Vanderlei Silva as headliner, promoters are also in negotiations at filling the rest of the show up.

Mark Coleman vs. Heath Herring. It depends on the outcome of Coleman vs. Nogueira in September whether or not this proposed fight takes place. Barring any injury, this might be one of those fights you just can't wait to see. Coleman seems to have the fire back and Herring is a monster who's beaten many of the top in the game. Do not look past Nogueira, however, to play spoiler.

Vanderlei Silva vs. Kazushi Sakuraba. Sakuraba has hopefully had time to recover for his in ring injuries and personal demons. However, like last time, the styles do not match up in Sakuraba's favor. Silva is a ruthless, aggressive, sometimes reckless striker who has a gift of avoiding the clinch and making his opponent pay for trying. Unless Sak has a new strategy, the same outcome could happen.

Don Frye vs. Ricco Rodriguez. This is NOT official by any means but Frye reportedly has asked for the match. There were reports that Frye's asking price was extremely high but as noted in the past, the Japanese know him, his reputation and his market value. It will be interesting to see him get back in the game but Ricco Rodriguez is not the safest opponent for the "Predator." There has been talk that a Don Frye vs. Gilbert Yvel fight is more likely to occur at the next Pride.

Naoya Ogawa vs. Nobuhiko Takada. Here we go again! Takada who reportedly asking for a rematch with Rickson and/or Royce and said if he didn't win, he'd retire. In all likelihood Japanese promoters aren't willing to invest thousands of dollars on a rematch that will more than likely have the same, repeated outcome. Takada's reputation was tarnished but he is still a main draw. Ogawa is the "Hulk Hogan" of New Japan Pro Wrestling which makes the match mean everything in Japan and absolutely nothing in the United States. If this is a "real" fight, it could get interesting but if things look fishy, they probably are.

Tito Ortiz Extends UFC Contract

The Ultimate Fighting Championship and light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz have come to terms for a multi-fight contract extension.

"I'm very excited to be fighting for the UFC. I have a lot more punishment
to give. Vitor Belfort better be ready," said Ortiz.

UFC President Dana White commented, "We are very happy with this contract extension. Tito is the top light heavyweight in the world, and look forward to many more exciting bouts from him."

Royler's Seminar on Friday

The Friday seminar kicked off without a hitch and it was great to hear some of the strategies from this master grappler. In attendance were none other than new black belt, Kai Garcia, new brown belt & 2001 BJJ World Champ, Kendall Goo, and JKD Concepts instructor Burton Richardson.

Royler's theories on teaching techniques in general is to focus on 2 or 3 key positions and teach a handful of techniques from those positions in order to allow ample time to practice and digest the new moves that were taught. He also does not like talking excessively, but the thing I enjoyed most was the tidbits of strategy and philosophy that seeped out in the seminar. For instance, a lot of his answers to questions like "How do we get out of the triangle?" or "What is the best strategy for taking down a big man?" was answered with once caught in a good submission it is too late. You should not have been caught in it in the first place. Basically he preaches timing and proper positioning to avoid getting into a bad situation.

The seminar can be summed up in the following phrase:
"A good defense will beat a good offense because your opponent cannot defeat you."

Oh, and about the best strategy for taking down a big man? A gun with 15 in the clip and 1 in the chamber. he he

Here are some pictures from the seminar.

One more reason to go to the NAGA Tournament!

Ok gentlemen (and ladies). I have received approval to post pictures of the beautiful Kym Stys who will be making a special appearance at the Hawaiian Grappling Championships. The incentive to win is a authentic reason to take a picture with this young model, but I don't have to tell you that unless you need a reason to tell your girlfriend/wife. We have been getting bugged for a while now to start a Hawaiian Hottie post and we have not because we don't want to post pictures without permission. Well, without further ado...Here's Kym!

Take a look at her site for more pictures at http://www.kymstys.com. I have checked her webpage out (for research purposes only of course) and believe me, you won't be disappointed.

Royler Seminar Update

There are only a couple spaces left Friday, but the Saturday seminar is walking a thin line. If we don't have 40 people, the seminar may not go on. Right now, there are only about 25 signed up for Saturday. Sign up and payment will be accepted until Friday so make sure that if you are interested call the academy, but more importantly stop by to make your payment. It's been probably about 6 or 7 years since the last time Royler was here in Hawaii to teach. Don't miss your opportunity to take a class from the probably the most successful Gracie in competition with victories spanning three decades which is unheard of in BJJ!

Tentative Schedule:

Friday, September 7, 2001 6:00-8:00 pm

Saturday, September 8, 2001 12:00-2:00 pm

By the way, how do you keep an idiot in suspense? I'll tell you and show you some pictures later.

Royler Seminar in Jeopardy

If you are interested in attending a seminar given by World BJJ and Abu Dhabi Champ, Royler Gracie, you better act fast. As of now, there are NOT enough people to warrant two seminars. We need at least 40 guys in order to have one seminar. The people who signed up and paid are split on Friday and Saturday. The deadline for payments is today so get down to the academy and drop your money to make sure Royler takes a break from his vacation and teaches.

Tentative Schedule:

Friday, September 7, 2001 6:00-8:00 pm

Don Frye is Back!

Initial Post

Things got strange when Don Frye made an appearance at the Trump Taj Mahal a few months back at UFC 30 and posed for photos in fighting shorts and UFC gloves. What does this mean? We don't know yet but what ADCC news does now is that Don Frye has negotiated with Pride for their upcoming September 24, 2001 mega-event. While no announcement has been made public, the truth should come out in the next few weeks. Fans would think that Frye, who's a major star in New Japan Pro Wrestling, would most likely make more money in Japan by using his wrestling status but don't count him out of the UFC!

Don was quoted at UFC 30 saying "I'd love to come back! With the new people in charge, they're changing things for the better and I'd love to do it again" said an eager Frye.

Stayed tuned for more on this potentially developing story.

Following Post

As we mentioned here last week, Don Frye was in negotiations to return to MMA in PRIDE, but many were unsure about Don's potentially high price tag. ADCC news pointed out that Frye, who is a mainstream pro wrestler for New Japan, would have much more success and financial offers coming from Japan. Apparently, this is happening as Frye has reportedly signed a deal to fight in PRIDE 16.

The "Predator" will reportedly face Brad Kohler who is most known for his intense, one-punch KO of Steve Judson three years back in UFC. This marks the first time Frye has entered MMA in over four years.

Other Pride 16 News

One other match being talked about is Guy Mezger against Ricardo Arona. This looks to be interesting as Mezger will definitely try to stand with Arona who brings high credentials, such as his 2 Abu Dhabi 2001 titles and his RINGS tournament victory.

Although unofficial at best, Anderson Silva (recently defeated Sakurai in SHOOTO) has reportedly had some dealings with Pride. Silva's opponent is rumored to be Daijiru Matsui. Expect Silva to give up around 30 lbs against Matsui who defeated his teammate Pele a couple of shows back. Silva is naturally about 170 lbs and many will question this move to Pride, as they seem to focus more on the heavyweights. Silva would be one of the lightest guys to ever fight for Pride.

Many fans and insiders are talking about the return of Don Frye to the ranks of MMA in either the UFC or Pride. Frye, former UFC tournament and Ultimate Ultimate Champion, may be making a bid to return to the sport that launched his current six-figure pro wrestling salary in Japan.

Shaolin is the King!

BJJ's 'Shaolin' Ribeiro: Runs to the Money

After the BJJ Worlds Championships, we don't see much action in Jiu-Jitsu competitions, but when there is money involved, all the big names step up to pay their bills.

Last weekend we had the 'Copa Gama Filho' in the Gama Filho University gym. Names like World champion Shaolin Ribeiro, Vice world Champion Fredson Alves, Alexandre "Xandi" Ribeiro, and Flavio "Cachorrinho" Almeida got to meet there to try and take home the 500 reals prize money (About 200 dollars).

In the first phase, Cachorrinho defeated Xandi and Shaolin submitted Fredson. In the final match Shaolin faced Cachorrinho, Shaolin started pulling to his guard and tried a choke. Cachorrinho avoided it, trying to stand up. From there Sholin took him down scoring the first 2 points. After some time managing to pass Cachorrinho's guard Shaolin got a good attempt and Flavio had to turn on 4 in order to not be scored on again.

Shaolin, lighter and faster than Flavio did put the hooks and scored 4 more points and got back home with the prize money.

Shaolin stated that it was a hell of a fight and that he's skipping the Jiu-Jitsu tournaments for a while since he will try NHB soon. He'll fight in the upcoming John Lewis' event, World Fighting Alliance in the November 10th in Las Vegas.

Stay tuned for more news about his fighting and his training soon.

Hawaii's Newest And Only MMA Sanctioning Body Based in Hawaii:
HAMMA: The Hawaii Association of Mixed Martial Arts
By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com

The title of this article is a little misleading, HAMMA was newly formed and is sanctioning MMA events in Hawaii, but the state of Hawaii has not handed over regulating powers over to HAMMA. The mastermind behind this organization is Brennan Kamaka, promoter of Hawaiian Combat and Warriors Quest. He along with Haru Shiminishi, and Brennan's brother Kai currently make up this fledgling organization. HAMMA's mission is to establish a board of commissioners that can take over regulation of mixed martial arts events in Hawaii. The board would be filled with prominent figures of Hawaii's MMA community, who will work together to increase the development of MMA in Hawaii and work to reduce the negative connotations that the sport has developed over the years. Kai Kamaka sums up HAMMA best by saying, "HAMMA is a sanctioning body that we came up with along with Haru Shiminishi where we want to regulate the sport as a sport. We want to take away the brutality. In Hawaii, we don't have an athletic commission, all we have is a boxing commission and we want to be a sanctioned Mixed Martial Arts event. For the state and the legislature, we want to make them aware that these guys train hard and cross train in a number of different areas, they are not just any "Joe" coming off the street to fight. That's what HAMMA was built upon."

Currently, MMA in Hawaii falls under the boxing commission and every MMA promoter has dealt with commissioner Norman Lau. The route promoters have taken to work around Hawaii's vague laws banning "Ultimate or Extreme Fighting" is by promoting events in the ancient Greek sport of Pankration, as practiced back in the early Olympiad. There has been many legislators who have tried to ban the sport of MMA in Hawaii. A few ardent supporters have fought tooth and nail just to get to the current state of affairs.

HAMMA's goal is for MMA to be regulated by a board of commissioners that understand the sport of MMA. For instance, Brennan and Kai Kamaka have wrestled in high school, with Brennan winning a Hawaii state championship in wrestling. They also cross trained in other arts and competed in numerous MMA events in Hawaii and on the US mainland. They not only fought, but also helped train numerous MMA competitors under the Jesus Is Lord Gym and SWAT Fighting Team. Haru Shiminishi was a kickboxing and Muay Thai competitor. Haru, along with Matt Hume, ran AMC Kickboxing and Pankration in Washington before moving to Hawaii and opening a well respected school. Haru has trained 7 world champions and has served as a referee on the majority of MMA events held in Hawaii. Haru has also gone through the development of a similar sanctioning body in Washington, called the United Full Contact Federation (UFCF). The UFCF was co-founded by Matt Hume. The UFCF has sanctioned a few MMA events here, but has not been in the forefront recently. This is where HAMMA starts off, where the UFCF left off.

HAMMA wants to take MMA in Hawaii to the next level and bring structure to this sport. Brennan Kamaka adds, "We are trying to make a commission that will create fighter rankings, via a majority system, where majority votes rule. Eventually, I will call all the schools and hope to get a representative on the commission." HAMMA is also not looking to force the regulatory duties of MMA to be passed onto them. They are working with the state in order to accomplish their goals of not only maintaining high safety standards, but also protecting the sport from immoral promoters. "We want the state to support us. We are working with Norman Lau. We want the state to say that this is a mixed martial arts event and it needs to be sanctioned by the Hawaii Association of Mixed Martial Arts. That way we will regulate it more like a sport. People have to line up within the lines of a sanctioning body. You can't just do anything that you want because one promoter can do things to hurt it for us all." says Kai Kamaka. Kai continues, "It is a sport and now we just have to get everyone to realize that this is a sport and it should be sanctioned by a proper body that is qualified to sanction a mixed martial arts event, not a boxing commission that does not understand the sport."

HAMMA is currently looking for MMA/NHB schools and individuals in Hawaii that are interested in becoming involved. They have scheduled a clinic, tentatively in November, where classes will be offered to train referees and judges to be used in future MMA events in Hawaii. Anyone interested can contact Brennan Kamaka at brennankamaka@hotmail.com.

It sounds like they have their hearts and minds in the right place when forming HAMMA and are also going about it in the right way to help the sport in Hawaii. How far they will get towards reaching their goal, only time will tell. How ever far, I am sure that they will leave a positive impact on the MMA community in Hawaii.

We will be having a little BBQ/Picnic at Ala Moana Beach Park today for all the Relson Gracie Students to get together and hang out on a nice and well deserved holiday. We have all the utensils and paper products. As usual, if you are in the area and don't have anything to bring, stop by anyway to hang out. We will try to be in the key (circular parking in the middle of the park near the main drag). If you need directions to where we are at, call Mike at 381-9530. See you there!

NAGA Update

Word on the street is that black belt, Kai Garcia, has his eyes on the WWF style no-gi absolute champion belt that is going to be up for grabs on September 22. The Buffalo is a destroyer and we'll see how his entry will mix the favorites for the title. Newly crowned brown belt World Champion, Kendall Goo, may enter the absolute gi division.

The promoter is also looking for last minute cash sponsers for the event. The sponser will have their name put on the WWF style belt that will be awarded to the champion. Email the promoter if you are interested.

For those who are the select few invited, save your energy for the night after the tournament, you'll need it.

NAGA RETURNS TO HAWAII - The North American Grappling Association is America's largest mixed grappling tournament circuit with over 5,000 competitors worldwide. On
September 22nd, 2001 the NAGA returns to Honolulu, Hawaii for it's 2nd Annual NAGA Hawaiian Grappling Championship Gi & No-Gi tournament at Farrington High School Gym. The NAGA has increased the number of Men's, Women's, Seniors, Teens & Kid's Divisions. Competitors will be matched with others closer to your size, weight and experience level! We have also added two Absolute Divisions for Gi & No-Gi fighters. The Absolute divisions are open to all who want fight for one of our NAGA Championship Belts! We are also GIVING away some great doors prizes donated by our sponsors including NAGA, MixedMArtialArts.com & Proving Grounds fight gear & Gold's Gym Free Memberships!

NEW BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU RULES FOR GI DIVISIONS: After many requests from our Gi competitors and instructors, we have switched back to using BJJ Points for the Gi Divisions. This has been very popular in the states and we hope to see more Gi fighters take to the mat on September 22nd.

ABSOLUTE DIVISIONS: Our idea is to replace the “Single Superfight” with Absolute or “Professional Divisions”. Anyone is allowed to compete in the Absolute Divisions. Last year Baret Yoshida won the belt, who will take it this year?

ADVANCED GI DIVSIONS GI 1ST**: In order to get the GI Grapplers fighting at the beginning of the day, we are dedicating ring #4 to the GI Divisions. We will work from Advanced to Beginner so that Advanced and Intermediate Gi fighters don't have to wait all day to compete. This is the opposite as the NO Gi so Advanced competitors who enter both will have plenty of rest in between divisions as will beginners!

We are holding a 4-Man No-Gi Invitational tournament and are looking for the top 4 grapplers/teams in Hawaii to be represented. The only requirement is that the each fighter is under 185 lbs.
