"Rhythm
is the Cure"
Italian Percussion and Trance Dance
by
Allesandra Belloni
with
Special
Guests
Moussa
Bangoura and Reggae Mcgowen
April.29,
2006
Red
Elephant 1144 Bethel St. China town park at Marks.
A
concert of drum music and dance of southern Italian,African,
and Brazilian folk cultures, with influences from Asia,North Africa
and India.
This
night will feature haunting melodies and trance rythms of southern
Italy, mainly connected to the rituals in honor of the black
madonna and the ancient roots trance dance of purification known
as tarantella.
Brazilian
offerings include condombe,maracatu,samba.
These
traditions have deeper origins in africa and will become magically
reconnected as Moussa Bangora and Reggae Mcgowen compliment Allesandra
with the ancient west african Instruments the kora and djembe.
This
concert describes the cycles of life and nature through
powerful rhythms. and haunting melodies; using the symbolism
of the
Madonna/mother earth Goddess found in southern Italian ,African,
and
Brazilian culture.
Sensuality,eroticism,lonliness,and
fear of disease and death are expressed through ancient prayers, chanting,
and drumming; invoking the spirit world through trance and self-
hypnosis.
The
features and collaborations will inspire dancing as the State
of the art sound system of the Red Elephant creates a bridge
between the 0spirit world and our current reality given the expertise
of these highly trained gifted musicians who's technique and
mastery of ancient instruments allows for Magic to be created.
The
repetoire will include original songs by Allesandra Belloni who
The New York Times says "has fast hands and the impassioned
voice of a mediterreanean banshee", inspired by her recent
trips to the shores of Recife and Southern Italy, where elements
of nature, the people and their beliefs are very similar.
Sensuality
and magic are part of everyday life, with the cult of the Goddess
of Love and Waters Oxun and Yemenja, and the Madoona del Mare.
The
African and Brazilian rythms fused with exotic instruments will
awaken your body as you begin to realize it's being moved by
something or someone else.
Rituals
of drumming, singing, and dance are practiced in Brazil,Africa, and
the East they have the power to bring people to an altered state, bringing
healing to mind body and soul through energetic flow and community.
Similarly
popular culture today has found electronic music and dance as
an outlet.
Here
were visiting the root of where thatcomes from.
Allesandra
also has new material that relates to popular culture as well
and is helping us live in both worlds.
Rythm
magazine calls her a "medicine woman" and "Dr.Beat"
Tradtional
Healing has become more important in todays world with the popularity
of yoga, massage, food herbs.
We
have found another reason to visit teachings of the past and
make them relevant and useful today. Southern Italian rythms
and chants were influenced by North Africa and the Middle east
and we wish to bring back the voices of our ancestors 0through
music,dance, and ancient rituals.
We're
bridging the gap between history, cultures of the world, and time.
Pre/Post concert and during intermission we give you a chance
to make an even deeper connection to the earth we come back to
earth literally with Kimberly Clarke who will be providing the
freshest pupus and drinks possible from her non-gmo organic garden.
Other
artists will be present with gifts honoring the

HERMES
FRANCA - New WEC Champion
CATCHING-UP
WITH A CHAMPION: WEC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE-HOLDER, HERMES FRANCA
OF THE TEAM ARMORY.
With
three consecutive losses in three different MMA promotions, two
of which were close fights and the other an unquestionable KO,
Hermes Franca needed to win. How does a fighter put the past
behind them and motivate themselves back to the winner's circle?
This was just the question that Armory fighter Hermes Franca
faced.
Franca
had a weird year in 2005 for his MMA career, especially for a
fighter who was so close to the top. Franca lost three matches
in 2005 and left ATT. For some, Franca's name was forgotten and
imprisoned in a distant past of success. A fact that was aparent
when fans questioned his placement as challenger against the
9-1 WEC Lightweight champion Gabe Ruediger on March 17th at Tachi
Palace Hotel 'n' Casino in Lemoore, CA.
Most
of the fans thought this was a tough fight, but one Ruediger
would win, pushing himself into the spotlight and a possible
UFC appearance. But a determined opponent, with a great personal
slogan, "NO REST FOR THE BEST" should not be underestimated.
Franca quickly lept over the stigma of his 0-3 streak and proceeded
with dethroning Ruediger in just 36 seconds with a KO victory,
consequently capturing the WEC Lightweight belt in its nineteenth
edition, titled "Undisputed".
MaxFighting:
What comments do you have about your 36 seconds fight against
Gabe Ruediger at WEC 19: "Undisputed"?
Hermes Franca: I was training really hard, mainly my cardio.
When I started to unload my punches I knew that I could land
them without stopping during 15 minutes.
MaxFighting: You are known as a submission wizard. Do you think
that Ruediger was suprised when you started landing punches?
Hermes Franca: Perhaps. I think he was right that the fight would
hit the ground, or that he would be able to trade punches against
me. I think that when he realized he could not, he felt the pressure
and found himself totally lost. (laughs).
MaxFighting: I think not only Ruediger, but everybody expected
the fight go to the ground
.
Hermes Franca: Nowadays we have to train everything, to be a
complete MMA fighter. We need to know a piece of everything.
So I trained a lot on the ground, sharpened my hands and my sprawls.
With all these tools and proper training, the submission or the
KO will occur during the fight, no doubts.
MaxFighting: While Ruediger had 6 appearances in WEC, you were
going into your first one. Why do you think the promoters brought
you in?
Hermes Franca: I think the promoters wanted someone who already
had fought in UFC and that had a huge name in USA. In spite of
my 3 consecutive defeats in 2005, my name is still strong in
USA. WEC contacted me and I was hungry to face Ruediger.
MaxFighting: What did you think about the structure of the WEC?
Hermes França: I was surprised. This was my first time
in WEC and the event was on tv throughout USA. The fights pleased
the crowd with 80% of KOs in that
night.
MaxFighting: In most internet chat rooms, most people counted
you out of this fight. Do you think it was due to your three
consecutives defeats already mentioned?
Hermes Franca: Of course; only GOD knows how I trained too much
for this fight. A lot of people thought I was dead, I read little
things about this. I trained and got 100% prepared in physical
and psychological sides.
MaxFighting: The psychological side is what I would like to ask
you about. How did your mind stay focused when you faced these
three defeats on the road?
Hermes Franca: I had the support of my team, it is so hard to
return after 3 defeats. Anyone who is fighter knows what it means
in a career. So I had to please my whole team, Kurt Pellegrino,
Rafael Chaves, Paulo "Guerreiro" Dantas, Joe Mulings,
Wald Bloise and all our students. Everyday I learned how to surpass
an obstacle: to wake-up early in the morning, eat the correct
things in the correct time and "to fight against" the
laziness. These personal battles increased my motivation and
made me strong. NO REST FOR THE BEST, this is our logo here at
the academy!
MaxFighting: Was this fight against Ruediger a do or die time
for you?
Hermes Franca: I tried to focus in my preparation for this fight.
I took my mind off all aspects which could harm me, it including
the thoughts like this one asked by you.
MaxFighting: So are you feeling relaxed now?
Hermes Franca: The feeling could not be better, it was good and
I believe that the work done by a team is very important. The
energy during the trainings and pre-thoughts were fantastic.
My all students were in my home watching the event - it was very
cool - very similar when Brazil plays the final of World Championship
of Soccer, and all Brazilians stay tuned in the front of the
TV.
MaxFighting: Of your three defeats which was the hardest to accept?
Hermes Franca: All of them. But I am sure nothing was by chance,
I think all what happened to me in 2005 made me to learn with
the mistakes and to correct them. This was what I did. Nowadays
I will only step-up on a ring with 100% of my conditions; if
I am not, I do not fight.
MaxFighting: Did Yves Edwards become an obstacle inside your
career? You lost twice to him.
Hermes Franca: I do not think so. Before my fight at WEC, I went
to train with him in Texas. We are partners now, I think he is
the number one in USA and it was a honor to fight him twice.
MaxFighting: So no possibility of França versus Edwards
3?
Hermes
Franca: I do not think so. He invited me to be in his corner
in Japan [at Bushido 10 vs. Seichi Ikemoto], but I could not
go due to a fight that I have to do, also Pellegrino within a
few days. I wish the best of lucky to Edwards.
MaxFighting: In your first time in Japan you fought HERO'S 3
and lost by majority decision to Kotetsu Boku. Which were your
main mistakes during that fight?
Hermes Franca: I have no comments on that. What I do talk to
you here it will not change the result of that fight. I like
to look forward now. But if I face him again the "business"
will be very different.
MaxFighting: You are the member of The Armory MMA team now. How
do you compare ATT to the The Armory?
Hermes Franca: I do not like to make comparisons. All academies
have the defects and qualities.
MaxFighting: Is The Armory a BTT's affiliated?
Hermes Franca: No, we are not. I like a lot of BTT's people,
they are great. I train with them everytime time I am in Brazil.
I root for them all the time they are fighting!
MaxFighting: You have three MMA belts, HOOKnSOOT, WEF and WEC
now, right?
Hermes Franca: Yes, you are right. And I am looking to conquer
the AFC belt in next April 22nd. All of them were tough to conquest,
but there is nothing better than to conquer it.
MaxFighting: Are you already training for this fight in AFC 16
against Nick Agallar?
Hermes Franca: Yes, no rest for the best!
MaxFighting: What do you know from the AFC belt holder Agallar?
Hermes Franca: He is tough guy with a good ground-game, he likes
to go to the ground on the top position. All his fights were
real battles and he has a good stamina. I am focused on fighting
against him with a good gameplan.
MaxFighting: Which are your targets in 2006 after this fight
at AFC 16?
Hermes Franca: I let this part of my job with my manager, he
takes the decisions. He booked me at AFC against Agallar and
the rest is only rumors popping on internet.
MaxFighting: Thanks for your time. Last word to be added?
Hermes Franca: I want to say thanks to GOD. He is my sponsor
who never failed to me in the right moments. Thanks to my family,
and to my dear team and fans.

IFL
Interview: Gustavo Machado
What
can a big victory do for a fighter? Besides getting the win and
and having the notoriety, the fighter can erase a defeat suffered
in a prior battle. And that's where we find PitBulls' Gustavo
"Ximu" Machado [10-4-1], who is going to collide with
Brad "Bad" Blackburn [7-7] of the IFL's Tiger Sharks,
in the welterweight clash in the inaugural IFL event on April
29th. Machado is coming off a defeat by TKO to Mike Pyle in the
recent Gracie FC and he wants to erase that from the mind of
MMA fans by defeating "Bad" Blackburn.
MaxFighting:
Will the defeat to Mike Pyle stop the expectations that you have
in your career for 2006?
Gustavo
Machado: I hope not, and the good-news of this is that I am fighting
at IFL in April 29th. I was very-well trained and I did not have
problems of weight or jet-lag against Pyle. He connected a punch
on my chin and took advantage of a position where I tried to
sink a heel-hook. I will try to make a better showing in the
IFL.
MaxFighting:
Did you enjoy to compete as a team versus team MMA competition
such as Gracie FC was?
Gustavo
Machado: This sounded good to me. My prior fights of Gracie FC-"Gracies
x HammerHouse" were faced by a different way than I did
when I fought it. I had my team 'behind me', and this time in
Gracie FC(and at the IFL) it will be a 'team at our side'. We,
Brazilians, see it by the sport that we enjoy more, the soccer.
There are eleven against eleven and I see IFL a little similar(inside
the proportions) to soccer.
MaxFighting:
You started your MMA career fighting around 90kg, and than you
came dropping to 88kgs, 84kgs and now you are in 77kgs to compete
in IFL. How are you managing it?
Gustavo
Machado: I weigh(now) exactly 79kgs, because I already started
my routine of losing weight. I have professionals working over
molecular and bones structure. They are evaluating me because
my intention is not only to lose weight; I need to keep the strength
too. I am changing the amount of food for the quality of it.
MaxFighting:
Are you suffering to lose the weight?
Gustavo
Machado: I am feeling myself how I should, I am fast. I have
done this planning of losing weight since last year. And now
I am fixing some small points and adopting my life for it.
MaxFighting:
And what are your teammates are speaking to you about your changing
of weight? I meant, how they are feeling you during the trainings?
Gustavo
Machado: They commented my punches are like hammers, and if I
reach this same 'deal' in 77kgs - they presumed my opponents
will not stand with me during much time. This is a big motivation
for me. I have a Muay Thai background in the roots of my fighter's
foundation, and to knock the adversary out is a perfect way of
finishing a fight.
MaxFighting: What do you expect from IFL?
Gustavo
Machado: I am from PitBulls now; this is my team. I expect to
win my fight and to get a contract signed with IFL, where we
will gain a salary, I hope I can become a professional fighter
in all aspects. I have hopes of have fights scheduled and then
I can dedicate myself only to the trainings.
MaxFighting:
Mike Pyle is booked on this event too. I guess if you two get
victories you will face each other. How do see this opportunity?
Gustavo
Machado: I hope I can fight him again, our styles are perfect
to provide a good show for the crowd. But I want to let clear
that it is not personal, inside the Brazilian culture we like
to try "to avenge" our defeats. This happened when
I lost to Ricardo Arona, Benji Radach(teammate of IFL's opponent
Brad "Bad" Blackburn) and Talles Leites; and when I
drew to Yuki Sasaki. Pyle had merits of beating me in Gracie
FC, and I am motivated to beat Brad Blackburn and then to meet
him again.
MaxFighting:
Do you think Blackburn can collect info from you based in what
his teammate Radach tells him?
Gustavo
Machado: I do not know, that my fight can not be used like a
parameter. I was not mentally in that KOTC's cage, only my body.
MaxFighting:
Pyle told me he watched your fights to see you main points. Did
you do the same before that fight?
Gustavo
Machado: I would like to, but I did not. WEC is not easy to reach
here in Brazil. I like to watch opponents' stuff, but it has
a good and a bad point.Because if you based your fight-plan over
what you watched from the opponent, you can get punk'd. Nowadays
we are training everything to overcome and surprise the opponent's
intentions. I am ready for all against Blackburn even(for while)
I can not reach stuff from him.
MaxFighting:
Your first opponent scheduled was Eric Dahlberg. Even though
you have a little more than 1 month to prepare, does this change
affect your preparation?
Gustavo
Machado: No, I can watch(maybe) the IFC-Rock&Rumble's fight
of Blackburn, that went to the third round. While from Dahlberg
I am sure I would have no chances of watching anything.
MaxFighting:
After your defeat to Pyle people started on doubting about your
skills. Are you worried with it?
Gustavo
Machado: Sure I am not glad on hearing it. But I did not have
four defeats on the road or I am 4-5 in MMA or something like
that. People need to understand that the opportunities I had
were only a few, I did efforts to win all of them, but my opponents
did it too. We see fighters competing 5 times or more in one
year, and I never had this calendar to me, closest I got to it
was 3 times in same year. I take a look on internet and I see
fighters with 0-6 in last six fighters or worst records than
that, and the promoters still give them the chances on the events.
I think if I had the same resume I would agree with people who
doubted of my faculties such as a fighter, but I understand what
they meant. I wanted the opportunities. I am in the second one
inside the first semester of 2006. Lets try to make me this same
question in the end of the year, so I think I can answer it more
properly.
MaxFighting:
Will you be focused only in IFL and USA MMA promotions now?
Gustavo
Machado: Like a professional fighter, I am focused in what is
better for my career. I am ready to fight anywhere.
MaxFighting:
When did you come back to the trainingsafter Gracie FC for this
fight in IFL?
Gustavo
Machado: One week after Gracie FC I was already on the trainings-routine,
hungriest to erase in IFL my defeat in Gracie FC.
MaxFighting:
Would you like to add anything else?
Gustavo
Machado: I had big support of Renzo, Roberto "Gordo"
Correa and Gracie Barra CT in the fight against Pyle. I will
have the same support at IFL and I am in very-well in whatever
I have to do against Blackburn. My fans in Brazil know my potential
and I do not want to disappoint them. I hope to display a show
at IFL through a victory over Blackburn. Also thank you to my
sponsor HAUS FightWear(http://www.hausfightwear.com.br).

Cage
Rage 3
March 25, 2006
Hanapepe Stadium, Kauai
An
estimated crowd of about 3,000 plus came out to see Vance Pascua
& Randy Ortiz third edition of Kauais now famous Cage
Rage MMA event. Headlining the card was Kauais own Eben
Kaneshiro, winner of the two previous Cage Rage main events,
taking on a very tough Miletich fighter Joe Pearson. Also in
attendance were MMA superstars Kimo, Falaniko Vitale, Kit Cope,
ICON Middleweight Champion Robbie Lawler and Ultimate Fighter
season 2 star Anthony Torres.
There
were fifteen fights on the card; 5 kickboxing and 10 MMA. The
fans were treated to an excellent mixture of stand up battles
as well as smooth ground work from all schools. But, jiu-jitsu
reigned supreme on this night as fighters from Ka-Mole and Kauai
Technical Institute (KTI) showed their awesome ground skills
and increasing striking skills producing two rear naked chokes
and a TKO in their matches.
The
main event started with Eben taking the center of the cage and
firing punches to Pearson. In a surprise move, Pearson jumped
to guard and Eben, a black belt in jiu-jitsu obliged. The Miletich
fighter went for triangle after triangle but Eben was just a
step ahead and began landing heavy punches which Pearson could
not handle and was forced to tap out in the very first round.
Eben continued his dominance and upped his record to 10-2. Big

MILETICH
SPEAKS

Pat Miletich
Pat
Miletich was recently interviewed by the Sherdog website. Here's
what Miletich had to say:
Interviewer:
For the benefit of those people who are not familiar, can you
fill us in on what Dana [White's] beef was?
Miletich:
Well, from what I can understand he felt that the IFL hired [former
UFC exec] Keith Evans illegally or that there was some illegal
thing going on or whatever. In my mind IFL was going to make
Dana mad eventually. Dana sometimes gets mad about things. He
decided that he was going to sue the IFL for doing things he
felt was wrong. I talked to Dana and said that I didn't think
it was a good idea, and tried to remain calm with him, [saying]
it's not necessary. The IFL is going to help the UFC by bringing
more notoriety to the sport, so just [let it go]. I mean, why
would you blame somebody for hiring a guy who's qualified? If
I'm running a fight organization and Keith Evans says, "I'm
available." I say, "Great, you're hired." Be mad
at Keith, great. Keith didn't stick with Zuffa for whatever reasons;
there are obvious reasons he didn't stick with them, that was
Dana's beef, I think, to be honest with you. Hurt his feelings.
Hell, I don't know.
Interviewer:
Based on your dealings with Dana, was this a surprise to you?
Miletich:
No, because he told me he was going to crush him. I had a feeling,
and like I said I tried to talk him out of it. Negative stuff
like that does nothing but hurt everybody involved. Dana might
not realize it but it's hurting the UFC also.
Interviewer:
Moving on to IFL. With all due respect to Mr. Otto and Mr. Shamus,
to be blunt, why do you need these guys? You've got a great team
yourself, and you know more about the fight game than anyone.
Why not just start your own thing?
Miletich:
Because these guys are great businessman. They know how to run
a business. I know how to run my business. They know how to run
their business. We make a great team together. All the people
involved... I'm a small, a very small portion of this thing.
I'm one little cog, one wheel in this machine. There's a lot
of people involved in this that are all very qualified people.
So it's a great thing. Gareb's Wizard Entertainment Company has
connections to a lot of TV networks, movie studios, toy companies,
comic books, a lot of other magazines; things like that to where
we can reach millions and millions of people that have never
even seen this sport. I mean, in my hometown, half of my town
has no idea what Ultimate Fighting is, and I grew up there my
whole life, and there are 40 professional fighters that live
there in a town of 40,000 people. Give me a break. How many people
out there across the United States alone don't even know what
our sport is and haven't even been reached yet? That says a lot
for IFL. And it's being marketed with a true league feel and
touch. All that stuff is important for bringing in that guy that
normally, if he saw fights in a cage, he'd go, "What a joke,
this is ridiculous," and click over to basketball on ESPN.
This is a different look, and we want to get people that are
normally not interested in the sport to jump onboard.
Interviewer:
How long has this been in the works?
Miletich:
Since about late summer [2005].
Interviewer:
I would imagine that you get approached by guys with the "next
big idea" all the time.
Miletich:
Yeah.
Interviewer:
So was it Otto and Shamus's business sense that clinched the
deal for you?
Miletich:
Yes, but I also just liked the idea. I love the idea. I thought
it was great. I grew up wrestling. A lot of people have trouble
with the concept of a team thing with fighting. But what they
don't understand is I grew up wrestling my whole life, and all
the guys that grew up wrestling their whole life know that it
is a team sport and it is also scored individually. So it's easy
to do.
Interviewer:
Who are the coaches, officially? There have been some changes.
Miletich:
Maurice Smith (Pictures), Renzo Gracie (Pictures), Bas Rutten
(Pictures) and myself.
Interviewer:
No Tank Abbott?
Miletich:
(laughs) No.
Interviewer:
Are you an equity owner in this league?
Miletich:
No.
Interviewer:
Did you have any input into the rules or structure of it?
Miletich:
Some.
Interviewer:
Are you at liberty to discuss where you had input?
Miletich:
No elbows was my idea. And also pretty much everyone agreed about
no elbows, just for the sheer fact of keeping people healthy.
Interviewer:
You've got the "no elbows" rule, you've got the ring,
you've got the shorter rounds. What do you say to the fan that
says this is UFC or PRIDE lite?
Miletich:
I'd say wait till you see the fights and you'll understand that
these guys are the real deal.
Interviewer:
Each team has an operating budget, correct?
Miletich:
Yes.
Interviewer:
Are you acting as coach and GM? Do you handle that budget, or
does IFL?
Miletich:
After we get out of the preseason, I'll be given a budget to
work with, and I'll take care of my fighters the way I have to.
Obviously the books will be looked at by IFL.
Interviewer:
So you're like Pat Riley to the Miami Heat: coach and manager
of operations?
Miletich:
Yes.
Interviewer:
Can your top fighters compete, or is it only new faces we'll
see?
Miletich:
It won't be just new faces, there's going to be some veterans,
some Pay-Per-View veterans that are going to be in there. My
job as a coach is not this season necessarily. My job is to build
a foundation for successful reign for many years to come, so
I decided to go with young fighters that have very good records
that I know are capable of destroying people and doing it for
several years down the road. I don't want a guy that's been on
Pay-Per-View for 10 years and is at the end of his career just
because I want to win this year. Even though I think we'll dominate
the first year.
Interviewer:
Can you discuss the TV deal?
Miletich:
There are negotiations [underway]. I really can't talk about
that.
Interviewer:
Turning to Team Miletich for a minute. You've got one of the
best, if not the best brands in the business. Obviously that
is going to attract talent. Are you finding now with the competition
that you need to do anything differently to attract guys to your
camp? Do you recruit?
Miletich:
I never recruit. The only thing I do - because we've started
such a strong affiliate program now that we're really getting
a lot of affiliate schools - what I can do from that, the guys
who graduate from the affiliate programs into my facility, who
are the cream of the crop from their gyms. Then come to my place
to get fine-tuned and get even better, and get more fights at
a higher level, until they make it to pay-per-view. It's a great
system.
Interviewer:
So you now have your own farm system.
Miletich:
Absolutely. Whatever I can do to help any of those guys that
have dreams or aspirations of getting there. It's a great way
for a guy like me, who loves to teach. But there's too many people
out there to teach; it's a great way for me to touch people's
lives sometimes without even having taught them. Because I'm
teaching the guys that are teaching them. One way or another
they're learning good stuff.
Interviewer:
Once they come out to your facility, are they officially still
a free agent? Or do they sign with you as well?
Miletich:
I've done no paperwork with anyone. I've never signed a contract
with any of my fighters. If they're not happy with the way we're
doing things, they're more than free to go somewhere else.
Interviewer:
As a coach, you're at the top of the pyramid, but I would imagine
you wouldn't stay there as long as you have if you're not constantly
pushing the envelope yourself. So what do you do to learn new
stuff? Do you bring other guys in? Do you reach out to other
coaches?
Miletich:
You've definitely got to have an open mind, and you're always
looking to improve. But also at the same time, you don't have
to reinvent the wheel. There's different ways of wrestling, there's
different ways of doing jiu-jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, everything
else. But still, fundamentals are always going to win. The guys
that have the strongest fundamentals in all the areas of fighting
are gonna win. The best Olympic wrestlers on the planet - I say
this time and time again - are using single-legs and double-legs,
just like they were doing in first grade. They just do them better
than anybody else in the world. You can't stop 'em. It doesn't
matter if you know my game, if you know I'm going to come in
and do certain things in my fight, you still have to be good
enough to stop it. So we're always going at things with an open
mind; we always use things that work and are proven. We have
no problem absorbing new material and adding it into the system,
that's the beauty of throwing the ego out the window and saying,
"Nobody's the best in the world. Maybe for one night I was,
at one time in my life, whatever - but you've just got to say,
'Hey, that's a great technique, let's use it.'"
Interviewer:
Let's turn to your camp. I'll leave this one open-ended: Matt
Hughes.
Miletich:
Matt Hughes. Continues his dominance, and I believe will continue
his dominance for as long as he probably wants to.
Interviewer:
He said he felt Royce (Gracie) was behind the times, but is he
altering his preparation in any way for that fight? How much
does he vary the approach based on the fighter?
Miletich:
Our approach is really always the same: we always work on ground
and stand-up. We work wrestling, whether it's offense/defense,
we work the same amount pretty much for anybody that we fight.
If you're not a well-rounded fighter then you don't belong in
the game. Just because he's fighting Royce doesn't mean he's
working more on his jiu-jitsu. To be honest with you, he's probably
working more on his throws so he can launch Royce directly onto
his head and then throttle him to within an inch of his life,
and then submit him just to prove a point. Matt is setting out
to prove a point with Royce in this fight.
Interviewer:
Not suggesting Matt is looking ahead, but can we talk about Georges
St. Pierre?
Miletich:
Let's first get back to Royce - Matt's mad. Matt's offended that
Royce is even getting in the ring with him and thinking he's
gonna win. First of all, Matt thinks that way for everybody,
it doesn't matter who you are. The fact that you get in the ring
with him, he's offended that you have the balls to climb in the
ring with him and think you're going to win. That's just his
mentality.
Interviewer:
Back to GSP. Hasn't his game improved since the first fight?
Miletich:
Yeah, I think he's improved; I definitely think he's improved.
I think everybody improves the longer they're in it. Has he improved
enough to beat Matt? I don't think so. Matt's always going to
be stronger than him. Matt's always going to move better than
him when it comes to wrestling and grappling. He's never gonna
out-power Matt. He's a strong kid, but until Matt's 45 he's not
going to out-power Matt. He may catch him. I've been wrong, Georges
is a great fighter. Georges is the next best fighter in that
weight division without a doubt in the world.
Interviewer:
Moving to Tim Sylvia. Obviously a tough loss to Arlovski the
first time around. How is the approach this time going to be
different?
Miletich:
Fundamentals. He lost last time for not paying attention to fundamentals,
but trust me he's been working a lot on that. Nothing fancy.
You don't need anything fancy to beat guys.
Interviewer:
Jens Pulver.
Miletich:
Jens is fighting the beginning of April over in Japan, not exactly
sure who he is fighting. But without a doubt Jens will go over
and make it exciting. Jens could fight his sister or he could
fight King Kong and he'll make it exciting. He's a showman and
he's a great fighter. Jens plans on using all of his tools this
time instead of just his boxing skills. He got in that mindset
that he had to just box and bang and turn it into a brawl and
wanted the crowd on their feet. What he was forgetting about
is that winning gets you paid more.
Interviewer:
So you felt he was focusing on boxing too much?
Miletich:
It wasn't that so much as he was more concerned with putting
on a show for the crowd because he knew the Japanese people loved
that. That's what he wanted to do, and he still loves doing that.
Interviewer:
How about Robbie? Some people felt he was a candidate for comeback
fighter of the year last year. As a coach, what did you do to
keep his confidence up, his head in the game after the tough
losses in 2004?
Miletich:
Everything happens for a reason. I think Rob needed that stuff
to happen to realize that he couldn't depend on just ability
alone, just going out and throwing bombs and trying to get people
with every punch. Rob's now matured as a fighter so much that
in the room, being deadly honest with you, in the room when Rob
spars or grapples very rarely at any moment, in any practice,
can anybody hang with Rob. When Rob wants to open up, Tim Sylvia
will be gassed in three rounds. That's saying how good Rob is,
because Tim Sylvia hits hard and he's a great fighter. Rob is
just so smart at fighting in the room, and now finally in the
ring, that he's got the potential to be - if, if - he truly works
hard, he's got the potential to be probably the best guy ever
to come out of the camp, and that's saying some crazy stuff with
guys like Pulver and Hughes and all these other guys that have
come out.
Interviewer:
So are you hinting that he hasn't worked as hard as you'd like?
Miletich:
When he was younger, he was depending on ability a lot, and he
was injured a lot also. I've got to cut the kid some slack, because
the three losses that he's got, were fights he never really trained
for because he was hurt the entire time. That had a lot to do
with it too. You have to give Rob a lot of credit for going into
those fights, not having trained enough and injured. Hey, you're
young; you're injured; you need the money; and you feel you can
do it anyway, more power to him. He's got a lot of guts. Now
that Rob is performing in the ring the way he does in the room,
with sharp, crisp punches, any time he wipes his hands on people
they're gonna fall.
Interviewer:
So is IFL next or UFC next?
Miletich:
[Icon], for all of next year. Rob signed an exclusive contract
with [Icon], and he'll go with nowhere else, unless somebody's
willing to buy out that quarter million dollar contract and pay
Rob quite well.
Interviewer:
Anybody else in the stable you'd like to comment on?
Miletich:
We've got so many tough guys coming up, they've fought a lot
but look for the IFL to be exciting. We've got a lot of guys
fighting in the UFC coming up. Spencer Fisher just had a loss
in the UFC but it was a great performance coming off a week's
vacation down in North Carolina, then cutting 20 pounds in two
days. On a last minutes notice they called him in to fight, went
in and had a war, so great things for him coming up. But also,
April 6th, we've got three guys: Sam Hoger, Josh Neer and our
big boy, "The Hillbilly Heartthrob." Those guys are
fighting.
Interviewer:
Everybody needs a gimmick, right?
Miletich:
Yeah (laughs). The 15th is Sylvia-Arlovski, then we roll into
May for Hughes-Gracie, and again, Pulver in April over in Japan.
Interviewer:
Can you comment on the fight promotion company you've got in
the works?
Miletich:
Discussions have started. But first things first - we're concentrating
on the affiliate program and the fight game. That's all we're
doing. With the affiliate program we've got people interested
in London, Madrid, Beijing, up in Canada, all over the United
States, so we've got a lot of good things happening. We welcome
all people who are interested in taking a look at that program.
We're going to have a lot of fun with it, we're going to cover
the globe with Miletich fighting systems, and really educate
people on what fighting is all about.
Interviewer:
How many affiliate schools do you have now?
Miletich:
We have six that are actually open, and about 14 will be open
in the next couple of months.
Interviewer:
So we're hearing rumors of a comeback. Can you talk about it?
Miletich:
Yes, I am [coming back]. It will be this summer against a big
name opponent. I can't say exactly who it is.
Interviewer:
Feel free to tell us.
Miletich:
I wish I could (laughs). I wish I could open my mouth, but it's
a fight that I've wanted for a lot of years. We're great friends
and when we talked about fighting each other we laughed. We said,
"Yeah, let's go out and knock the living hell out of each
other and put on a great show for the crowd." It's going
to be a lot of fun. The card is exceptional from top to bottom,
the fighters that are on it are phenomenal.
Interviewer:
As a businessman, the sport's peaking and I would imagine it
would be hard to turn down a comeback. It's great for you [financially]
and Miletich Fighting Systems in general. Is that what's driving
these comebacks lately?
Miletich:
For me, I was the one pushing for this and the reason I was is
because I had a neck injury three years ago and I didn't want
my body to tell me when I had to quit. I've rebuilt my body completely.
My neck's solid. I've taken some heavy strikes from my fighters,
punches and kicks. That doesn't bother me, so I'm ready to rock
and roll.
Interviewer:
I'm guessing training's a way of life for you, so you probably
don't have to turn it up too much to get in fighting shape, or
am I wrong?
Miletich:
No, I need to turn it up a lot. I mean, I can still go in and
spar 12 rounds with pretty much any of my guys - minus Lawler
and maybe some of my big guys, some of the heavyweights. But
just for the sheer fact that I have to lift hard, I have to run
hard, I have to wrestle hard, I have to spar hard, I have to
hit mitts, Thai pads, I have to stretch a lot, there's a lot
of things that I always did for fights that I don't do as a coach
as much. As a coach, I'm an extra body. I'll get in there and
bang with Matt Hughes for six rounds, 10 rounds, whatever, sparring,
but because I'm not in shape I'm getting hurt because of it.
I'm not doing my running and lifting and things like that - I'm
just an extra body right now. So I need to rebuild my body so
that I'm not getting hurt, which I've been in the process of
doing the past couple of months.
Interviewer:
How much training do you think you'll need to get there?
Miletich:
Twelve weeks of very intense training and I'll be 100 percent.
