Quote of the Day

"Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of everyone, and let your hand give in proportion to your purse."

George Washington, 1732-1799, 1st President of the United States

"NEVER SUMBIT" MOVIE AUDITIONS AT AKA

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif Imperia Entertainment (Pink Sheets: IPEI) President James Hergott announces that American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, California will host open auditions for a movie about the sport of mixed martial arts entitled Never Submit on Sunday November 19th beginning at 4pm.

AKA is owned and operated by Javier Mendez, a former two-time world champion kick-boxer, and is home to a number of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) competitors, many of which are making plans to audition for roles in Never Submit.

According to the movies producer, Cindy Ortiz, “AKA was one of the first MMA training centers I contacted and offered the opportunity to host one of the casting call for Never Submit because of the level of talent Javier Mendez and head instructor “Crazy” Bob Cook have been able to attract and keep. These guys have a top-notch operation and I have no doubt we will be able to cast and fill a number of roles on our list by holding auditions at AKA.”

“Jervis Cole of Zinkin Entertainment & Sports Management (headquartered in Fresno, CA) and I have been in contact since July about the movie” explains Ortiz. “His agency represents some of the hottest MMA fighters out there including Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Josh Koscheck, Cung Le, Mike Swick, Cane Velasquez, Trevor Prangley, Phil Baroni, Josh Thompson, Jon Fitch, Paul Buentello and Rashad Evans. Zinkin Entertainment is a well respected agency in this industry because not only do they manage the fight careers of their athletes, they explore opportunities of interest to their clients outside of that realm. Competing in combat sports is something these athletes choose to do…but it’s not the only thing they can do. Many fighters aspire to see themselves on the silver screen and we are impressed with the level of talent Jervis Cole and Zinkin Entertainment have confidence in.”

Slated to vie for roles in Never Submit November 19th at AKA also include Jean-Claude Leuyer, Matt Major, Jimmy Zimmerman and Bobby Southworth. Already cast for roles in the movie are Pride Fighting Championships superstars Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Director James Hergott comments, “As a former Judo competitor, I have closely followed this sport and have been a fan of MMA since its North American introduction in 1993. Only during the past two years has mixed martial arts finally started to gain true mainstream acceptance. Never Submit will appeal to the hardcore fans as well as expose movie goers to this emerging sport who may know very little, if anything, about MMA when they enter the theater. My goal is to turn as many viewers into MMA fans as possible by the closing credits.”

Hergott continues, “It is my intent as writer and director to portray the sport of MMA, the athletes competing in it and the fans supporting it in a positive light. MMA isn’t a barbaric underground blood sport like it has been depicted in the past by other filmmakers. It’s a very intellectual sport; a physical chess match between men. Never Submit will showcase the courage, integrity, commitment, athleticism and sportsmanship found in these modern day gladiators and I’m looking forward to telling their stories.”

“To most professional fighters in this sport, Never Submit is a metaphor describing the way they live their lives,” Hergott explains. “These athletes aren’t quitters. They have a discipline that runs deep that impacts most of what they do. They have something in their DNA that the rest of us do not. These athletes are competitive by nature and the will to succeed and be number one is always the goal.”

Imperia Entertainment will announce the actors and fighters for the film in future press releases. Inquiries pertaining to fighters interested in auditioning for roles, potential sponsorship opportunities available to companies/vendors and MMA media requests should be made via e-mail to Producer Cindy Ortiz at cindy@imperiaentertainment.com.

“Their appearance is typically their ‘secret weapon’ because they can be accountants, teachers, police officers, firemen and/or attorneys,” Hergott adds. “They don’t have to be tall like basketball players or massive and quick like football players in order to be champions. MMA offers one of, if not the most diverse and talented pools of athletes found in any sport, in any country, on any continent in the world and that’s one of the things that makes it so great.”

Never Submit is an inspirational tale similar to Rocky, but the lead character is an intelligent young man (as are most fighters competing in this sport) rather than a beaten-down punch-drunk fighter. An amazing cast of characters will round out this film; each from different walks of life; each with his own set of circumstances and motivating factors driving him to be the best. For some, their best won’t be good enough.

Different roads bring them all to the same intersection where the human spirit is put to the test. For these athletes, their hearts, physical skills and mental tenacity decides the victor… and there can only be one. Never Submit takes movie goers inside the methodical, fast paced, action packed, unpredictable and sometimes controversial world of mixed martial arts, deemed by many to be the most exciting sport on the planet.

Ms. Ortiz comments, “MMA is regulated and sanctioned by numerous state athletic commissions because they recognize it to be a legitimate sport just like baseball, football and basketball. These fighters are just as much professional athletes as the elite performers found in other sports. I feel that Never Submit will have widespread appeal because it doesn’t matter what language you speak or where you are from, competitive fighting is universal. The action in this film is going to keep movie goers on the edge of their seats just like it does millions of spectators flocking to live MMA events every year around the globe.”

Ortiz continues, “The script doesn’t present MMA as the hobby it is for some, nor does it focus on amateur level competitors. Never Submit showcases the intensity of professional fighting and I think it’s going to succeed in bringing long overdue recognition and respect to the sport as well as the athletes representing it. Typically we see films with great action scenes but not-so-great acting or storylines… or just the opposite. That’s not the case with Never Submit. The fight sequences are outstanding, the dramatic scenes are warm and convincing and the way Mr. Hergott has tied these two elements together makes for a great story. The roles are challenging and rewarding and the end result will be something everyone involved can be very proud of.”

Imperia Entertainment recently announced a partnership with TapouT Magazine (www.tapoutmagazine.com) as part of a cross-country tour to promote the publication as well as the movie. Stops at select dojos to hold auditions for Never Submit are being finalized. TapouT Magazine readers can expect to see the mixed martial arts movie prominently featured in the bi-monthly publication throughout the casting, filming and theatrical release stages, as well as enjoy behind the scenes details from Never Submit director James Hergott, one of TapouT Magazines newest contributors.

Joinha talks about Vitor's doping

He is BJJ black belt, fighter entrepreneurs, journalist and now one of the owners of a new MMA team, that promises to rock the Rio de Janeiro fight market. Jorge Joinha Guimarães is also Vitor Belfort entrepreneur and is really sad about his friend's last performance. 'I got really sad about Vitor's performance. I think he was pretty nervous because it was his last fight of the contract', said Joinha to site TATAME. The entrepreneur also talked about the Vitor doping question. 'The Athletic Commission of Nevada (NSAC) said that his blood has the substance called 4-hidroxi testosterone that is an illegal substance, but you can find it in legal products that you might buy on the market', commented him.

Joinha just organized a new team called Black House, in Rio de Janeiro. 'Beyond the academy structure, the team will have 1000 m2 of training area with 2 dojos, one octagon and one ring. The whole structure is already done. The inauguration will be held on November 27th', said Joinha happy about his new team.

The new team has great stars as professors and as pupils. 'We have Anderson Silva as the responsible by the Muay Thai, Roleta responsible for the BJJ and we are also studying the possibility of bring Dórea to the Boxing. As athletes we already have Vitor Belfort, Assuério Silva, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Carlo Prater and maybe Antônio Pezão', told Joinha.

The entrepreneur also wants to bring Vitor to train in Rio. 'I would like to bring Vitor to Rio. This is my dream, I know that here at the Black House, training everyday, he will have the perfect gas to get his best potential', finished Joinha.

Ricardo Arona wants belt dispute

After defeating Alistair Overeem in one of the super fights of the Pride GP Open Weight, the Brazilian Tiger Ricardo Arona now is training hard for his possible confrontation against Wanderlei Silva on December 31st. "The Japanese press and the DSE, the Pride company organization, did divulge at the Daily Sports Newspaper that they want me for this belt dispute", said the BTT black belt, who also said: "I think Minotouro is a great athlete, but he came into this history after me. And this belt dispute between me and Wanderlei is an old history and it can't be different, we must solute it now, no more talking. Even with all the facts we have a total result of 1x1 and this new bout would be the big one", said Arona in exclusive interview to site TATAME that you may check out during this week.

CURRAN, GASSAWAY & SPELLMAN HIGHLIGHT XFO CARD

HOFFMAN ESTATES, ILLINOIS – Much of the attention on the Xtreme Fighting Organization's mega-show on Nov. 11 is being directed at the mixed martial arts debut of former National Football League standout Alonzo Spellman.

At 6-foot-6 and more than 300 pounds, Spellman will be the biggest competitor on the 18-bout card at the new 11,000-seat Sears Centre.

However, mma veteran Jeff Curran says the lightweight main event fight between himself and undefeated Rafael Assuncao will definitely steal the show.

"I'm predicting a great fight... an exciting fight," said Curran, who has won 10 of his last 11 bouts and is 26-8-1 overall. "I think Rafael and I can do it all... we can strike, kick and knee standing up and submit people on the ground. It's a very close fight."

Curran, who will have homecourt advantage, is no stranger to "close fights." In the last year, he has beaten then undefeated Antonio Carvalho for the Shooto Americas title; submitted Charles Bennett on a King of the Cage Pay-Per-View event; lost a decision in Pride Bushido to Japan star Hatsu Hioki in Tokyo; and edged out hometown favorite Wagney Fabiano by split decision in Canada.

Assuncao, a Brazilian with a 7-0 record, has also done well. He submitted Joe Lauzon, who recently knocked out former world champion Jens Pulver in the UFC, and also owns a win over tough Jorge Masvidal.

"This is a huge fight in the lightweight division," said promoter Dan Lardy. "Both guys are competing at the top level and are known for putting on exciting fights. We're expecting fans to be talking about this fight on the way out of the arena."

Spellman, who played nine years in the NFL, mostly with the Chicago Bears, is taking the fight game seriously. He has set up a camp in Las Vegas that includes pro boxer Ty Fields (37-1) and he is being coached by Augie "School Boy" Sanchez, who fought for the WBO lightweight world title against Prince Naseem Hamed.

"I'm taking this very seriously," Spellman said. "I've been dealt a lot of lemons in my life and I'm looking at this to turn it all into lemonade."

Chicago native Antoine "Herc" Hayes will try to spoil Spellman's debut. Hayes is 3-2 overall with a big knockout win over previously unbeaten Mark Burch and a loss to UFC fighter Jake O'Brien.

"Alonzo was a great football player... and he's a great athlete," Hayes said. "But this isn't football... this is mma and this is my sport. He's going to find out there's a big difference between the two sports."

Another feature bout includes Chicago legend Bob Schirmer, who has countless submission grappling titles, getting into the cage for probably the last time. Schirmer, although in great shape, is 50 years old.

Also, Chicago's Brian Gassaway (23-14) a UFC veteran, will face Donnie Liles (6-1) of Denver in a welterweight bout... and UFC veteran Terry Martin will battle Jason Guida for the XFO middleweight title. Both Martin and Guida are Chicago standouts.

XFO 145-pound champion Matt Fiordirosa (5-1) will defend his title against unbeaten Justin Robbins (5-0) of Springfield, Ill.

In another noteworthy match, Kerry "Meat Truck" Schall, a veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter" television show, will compete against Geza Kalman in a heavyweight bout between two UFC veterans.

Tickets are available at 1-888-SEARSTIX and more information is available at www.x-fighting.tv and www.searscentre.com.

Punishment In Paradise
Nov 24, 2006 @ Dole Cannery Ballroom

Punishment In Paradise had a chance to talk to John "Warrior" Visante Jr. during his busy schedule of School and trainning for his upcoming fight Nov 24 @ Dole Cannery aganist Harris Sarimento

(P.I.P)I talking here with John "The Warrior" Visante Jr. IN 2006 you really stepped up your competition..Any reason?

(JV) Well i've been boxing alot and I was dominant in my weight class but I wasnt known by all. Brennen Kamaka called me up and asked if i wanted to fight Kolo Koka and i said yes. i stepped it up a notch b/c i felt i was getting to the point where i had to show everyone I can bang with the big dogs

(P.I.P)You beat Icon Veteran and X-1 Champion Kolo Koka in a K-1 Style fight what did that do for your career and mind.

(JV) That fight was a battle of who wanted it tha most and personally i knew i wanted it more then he did.
I've learned alot from that fight and i knew after watching tha video of that fight that i needed t o step up my game b/c after you fight someone known like kolo and beat him everyone is looking at you and you dont want everyone to think it was just a fluke.

(PIP) Why do they call you the Warrior and how old are you.

(JV)Well at the age of 16 not alot of guys would be doing the things im doing.
im fighting full grown men and beating them. I come from a family that is full of bangahz but i wanted to be tha one stand out.......one day while training for tha fight against kolo koka my dad said that only the strong survive, only the warriors live to fight again.
i told myself i would be the only warrior.....and after kolos fight someone from the crowd told me "son u have a heart of a warrior" so i've been called it ever since.

(PIP) Tell us what titles or honors have you have since boxing or kickboxing?

(JV) I've held tha 2004 141pound-desert showdown champion and 145 pound-PAL national champion

(PIP) Your fighting ICON & ROTR Champi on Harris Sarimento they call him the HITMAN whats your taughts and how is trainning going..

(JV) I know once again I am being put to tha test to fight one of tha greatest strikers in Hawaii. This is my chance to show that I am also one of the greatest strikers in Hawaii...I believe that the training that i am doing will get me more then prepared for this fight.
I feel i just have to use my height and reach and also my speed and most of all my heart.

(PIP) How is it like fighting in Punishment In Paradise compared to fighting in other events. Your taughts of P.I.P and the direction

(JV)Honestly, there isnt another event like PIP....the Punishment In Paradise world is more hardcore then other events held today.
PIP is filled with the best of the best. Only Gladiators fight PIP. Brennen Kamaka and P.I.P is going straight to the top and I've got a first class ticket.

(PIP) Any last words you would like to say to your fans

(JV)Be prepared b/c you are about to witness tha most vicious battle in Punishment In Paradise.

Silverbacks, Wolfpack Advance at IFL World Team Championship Semi-Finals in Portland, Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore., November 2, 2006 – The Silverbacks and Wolfpack claimed victories at tonight’s International Fight League World Team Championships before an enthusiastic IFL-record crowd of 7,632 at Memorial Coliseum. The Silverbacks, based in Quad Cities, Iowa/Ill., and coached by Pat Miletich, topped the Dragons, who train in Toronto and are coached by Carlos Netwton, by a 4-1 score. In the other semifinal, the homestanding Portland-based Wolfpack, coached by Matt Lindland, edged the Anacondas, based in Los Angeles and coached by Bas Rutten, 3-2. As a result of their victories, the Silverbacks and Wolfpack advanced to the IFL World Team Championship Final at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on Dec. 29.

In the two Superfights which followed the team competition, Mike Whitehead (Salt Lake City) registered a first-round TKO of Mark Kerr (Portland, Ore.), and Allan Goes (Rio de Janeiro) defeated Daniel Gracie (Rio de Janeiro) with a second-round TKO.

In the Silverbacks-Dragons matchup, lightweight Bart Palaszewski (Wonderlake, Ill.) drew first blood for Quad Cities, winning a split decision against Ivan Menjivar (Montreal). Rory Markham (Chicago) put his team up, 2-0, winning via TKO when the Dragons’ Keith Wisniewski (Portage, Ind.) could not answer the bell for the fourth round, which was necessitated by a draw after three rounds. Joe Doerksen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) submitted Ryan McGivern (Bettendorf, Iowa) in the middleweight fight to cut Toronto’s deficit in half, on a rear naked choke. But Mike Ciesnolevicz (Williamstown, Pa.) clinched the victory for the Silverbacks by choking out Brent Beauparlant (Ottawa, Ontario) to earn the light heavyweight point. Ben Rothwell (Kenosha, Wis.) tapped out Wojtek Kaszowski (Toronto) in the heavyweight bout via keylock for the final 4-1 margin.

Miletich praised all his athletes, but made particular note of Ciesnolevicz. “Building momentum early on the game was important,” he noted, “but Mike C is one heck of a competitor. That guy’s a horse.”

For his part, Ciesnolevicz added, “Clinching the win for the team is the greatest moment I’ve ever had in fighting.”

In the other semifinal, the Anacondas’ Chris Horodecki (London, Ontario) took it to Ryan Schultz (Gresham, Ore.), winning by TKO early in the second round to give the Anacondas the early 1-0 lead. In what may have been the most exciting bout of the entire evening, welterweights Jay Hieron (Las Vegas) and Chris Wilson (Portland, Ore.) slugged away for three full rounds, with Wilson taking the unanimous decision for the Wolfpack to event the score at 1-1. Matt Horwich (Gresham, Ore.) of the Wolfpack scored a second-round win by submission over Mike Pyle (Dresden, Tenn.) in the middleweight bout; before Aaron Stark (Portland, Ore.) secured the triumph for the Wolfpack with a submission of Alex Schoenauer (Las Vegas) in the light heavyweight matchup. Anacondas heavyweight Krzysztof Soszynski (Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned a submission win over Devin Cole (Medford, Ore.) for the final 3-2 count.

“This was a true team effort,” said Lindland. “We knew coming in how good a fighter each one of the Anacondas was, but our guys came in really focused and aggressive. With that crowd behind us, we were especially happy to get the win and move to the finals.”

Jackson And Jhun To Rematch At Strikeforce

November 7, 2006; New York, NY….Eight years after their initial confrontation, middleweight (185 lb. limit) brawlers, Eugene “The Wolf” Jackson, and Ronald “The Machine Gun” Jhun, will revisit the past when they square off with one another during Strikeforce’s “Triple Threat” world championship mixed martial arts fight card being presented by BodogFIGHT at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California on Friday, December 8th.

“I think there’s gonna be fireworks,” said Jhun. The 36-year-old from Honolulu, Hawaii is looking for payback after Jackson submitted him with a forearm choke hold in the first round of their meeting on August 4, 1998. “Eugene likes to stand and bang and I’m the same. I don’t like to play it safe. I always like to come out and put everything on the line and try to get a knockout, if I can. I just react and, whatever happens, happens.”

Jhun, who had only a single previous fight under his belt when he faced Jackson the first time around, has since amassed over 40 career mixed martial arts appearances. Along the way, he has notched victories over Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star, Joe “Daddy” Stevenson, as well as octagon veterans, “Mr. International” Shonie Carter, and Pete Spratt.

On Friday, March 10th, Jackson, a 40 year old resident of East Palo Alto, California, ended a two and a half year hiatus from competition when he faced Mexico’s Jorge “The Naked Man” Ortiz during Strikeforce’s historic, first-ever mixed martial arts fight card that was staged at the HP Pavilion. Jackson asserted himself in the first round and coasted to an easy, three-round unanimous judges’ decision win.

Three months later, Jackson returned to the cage at the HP Pavilion for a meeting with Mike Seal. After surviving Seal’s ambitious offensive in the early going, Jackson staged a dramatic comeback, pounding his opponent into submission while inside Seal’s guard in the second stanza.

“I know he’s on a comeback trail, but I’m also trying to get my name back out there and trying to make it known that I’m still one of the top guys out there,” commented Jhun. “I ain’t left yet. I still got some fire left in me.

Like his opponent, Jhun has been busy of late, his most recent effort a K-1 rules contest at Honolulu’s Blaisdell Arena last Saturday. Jhun scored two knockdowns on his opponent before earning a win by way of unanimous decision.

Tickets for Strikeforce “Triple Threat” are on sale at Ticketmaster (408-998-TIXS) and Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) as well as at the HP Pavilion box office (408-287-7070). Tickets are priced at $200.00, $150.00, $100.00, $75.00, $50.00, and $40.00, and $30.00.

The December 8th card will feature Strikeforce’s first-ever 205 pound light heavyweight championship bout. Bobby Southworth, a veteran of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, will face off with hard-hitting road warrior and K-1 and Pride Fighting Championship veteran, Vernon “Tiger” White, for the vacant crown.

Making his third-career mixed martial arts start, undefeated world San Shou kickboxing champion, Cung Le, will face his toughest test to date in Jason “Live Wire” Von Flue, a contestant on season two of The Ultimate Fighter.

Strikeforce’s 155 pound lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, will likewise attempt to extend his perfect record to 14-0 when the San Francisco, California native mixes it up with an opponent that has yet to be named.

Another lightweight sensation, Josh “The Punk” Thomson, will also top the bill. On October 7th, the 28-year-old former NCAA Division I wrestler put forth what was arguably his strongest effort to date when he controlled world Muay Thai champion and K-1 Max contender, Duane “Bang” Ludwig, for over a round before finding an opportunity to force Ludwig into submission with a guillotine choke hold.

Unbeaten submission wrestling stylist and former World Wrestling Entertainment “Tough Enough” reality show winner, Daniel Puder, will make his fourth career mixed martial arts appearance during “Triple Threat.”

The Strikeforce mixed martial arts event is being produced by Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment (SVS&E, www.svse.net), a leading producer of major sporting and entertainment events and the exclusive producer of such events for San Jose, California’s largest entertainment venue, HP Pavilion. SVS&E’s many properties include “Fight Night at the Tank” professional boxing; the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks; and the annual ATP men’s professional tennis “SAP Open” event.

Strikeforce is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion that, on Friday, March 10th, made history with its “Shamrock vs. Gracie” event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history. The star-studded extravaganza, which pitted legendary champion Frank Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cesar Gracie at San Jose’s HP Pavilion, played host to 18,265 fans, the largest-ever attendance at a mixed martial arts fight card held in North America.

The Final Fighter Finds His Way in to The Finale

This week the fighters expressed their appreciation for the previous fight which is interesting because I was disappointed. I thought Travis Lutter should have been able to finish Pete Sell, but I have to give Sell credit for being able to hang in there with a better jiu jitsu fighter. Most of the competitors on the show feel the same way as I did. Matt Serra makes a good point in that Sell may have lost the fight, but he did much better than some others would have against the Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, Travis Lutter.
Travis's jiu jitsu is on a whole other level than anyone else inside the house, I can tell you that for certain.

Charles McCarthy is one of the weirdest guys on the show by far. First, he becomes Captain Miserable and then on tonight's episode he reveals himself to be a terrifyingly efficient eating machine. He is apparently eating anything he can get his hands on and doesn't care if someone else's name is on it or not. He eats Edwin Dewees's pizzas that were on his list for the UFC to get from the grocery when they went shopping for the fighters. Edwin would later get his revenge for this in a rather creative way.

Gideon Ray, Pete Spratt, and Rich Clementi decide to have a little fun this week. They set up an old school booby trap in their room to get their other housemates wet. The trio leaves the door cracked and then rest a water cooler bottle on top of the slightly ajar door. When several of the other fighters come to investigate what's going on in the room they are greeted by the bottle falling down on them and drenching them with water. They all take it in stride and have a good laugh over it...all except one.

Edwin Dewees sneaks in to Charles McCarthy's room and places some pizza boxes on his bed. Charles then proceeds to chase Edwin down the hall and into his room. Unbeknownst to Captain Miserable they have the water booby trap ready to be sprung. He walks in and gets absolutely soaked to the bone with water and he is visibly angry. Spratt, Clementi, and Dewees laugh for a good thirty minutes according to Din Thomas who, I must say, is the one fighter who seems to give everyone respect in the house no matter if they deserve it or not. I do think that Din enjoyed the prank as much as the rest of them, but he respectfully declined to comment on it.

Edwin and Patrick are friends and on the same team, which would make for an awkward situation normally. Thankfully, Dewees opts to train with the Blue Team out of respect for Cote. Edwin believes his cut from his first fight with Gideon Ray is good to go and is fully aware that Cote will go after it in their fight if he can. The rest of the house, Dana, and the coaches all feel that Patrick is the one that is going to win this fight as was I at this point. He handled Rivera pretty well and I was certain that he would do the same to Edwin. Patrick admits that he feels that he knows his teammate way too well to lose this fight.

Back at the house, Mikey Burnett receives a call from the UFC's doctor about some problems he has been having with his neck. It appears that for Mikey to keep fighting he requires surgery. The doctor states that Mikey will not be able to fight in the UFC again until he does. I felt for Burnett as I am sure many others did after hearing his comeback story and getting to know him on the show. I wish him a successful surgery and speedy recovery if he chooses that route.

Note: There were 45 minutes left in the show and we were already on the fight day so you knew it was going to be a war leading to a decision between the two middleweights.

Round 1 - Starts out with leg kicks as did most of the fights this season.
Patrick gets a takedown and starts some ground and pound. Cote stands up again and then they trade with some decent exchanges. Patrick gets another takedown and then decides to stand back up again and he unloads on Edwin who is forced to back away and cover up. Edwin gets a takedown, but lands on the bottom and Patrick starts his mission to open up Dewees's cut.

Winner of round 1 - Patrick Cote

Round 2 - Cote gets a takedown and starts some ground and pound before standing back up. Patrick unloads with some powerful barrages that pushes Edwin back. Dewees lands a leg kick that forces Cote to drop to one knee who gets back up and then unloads with some more good punching shortly after. He takes Dewees down again and attempts a kimura. Cote's ground and pound opens up Edwin's cut just as planned when the round winds down.

Winner round 2 - Patrick Cote

Round 3 - They exchange early and it is clear that Patrick Cote's footwork is a step up from Edwin Dewees's. Patrick's confidence shows as he drops his hands in a mock kung-fu type stance and lands some good shots with a smile on his face. Dewees pulls Cote in to his guard and gets ground and pounded for his efforts until the end of the round.

Winner round 3 - Patrick Cote

Winner of the fight by unanimous decision and moving on to the finals to face Travis Lutter - Patrick "The Predator" Cote

Note: In the fight there was a moment where Cote was landing some elbows to Dewees's head and they could be heard laughing. It was obvious to both that Patrick was trying to open Edwin's cut and they both realized it at the same time causing a rather strange moment in the Octagon.

The season is over and on November 11th on Spike TV we find out who gets to face Matt Hughes and Anderson Silva for their championships. It was a decent season overall. There were no spectacular fights or real note worthy events, unless you count Jeremy Jackson ruining his shot on the show by getting kicked off for sneaking out of the house to go meet a lifeguard. One interesting thing said on this episode was by Georges St. Pierre who stated that it was HE who learned the most from the other trainers and from the competitors themselves. Matt Hughes may have his hands full in his fight on November 18th when they meet to determine who the welterweight final winner will face in his title shot. MaXfighting will will be covering that event so check back after the pay per view's scheduled time for the full results.

One last thought about season 4 as a whole. While, it may not have been the most exciting season of the four, it was the most respectful. If the younger fighters can take that aspect away from this show then Dana White has accomlished something truly amazing. I will be waiting anxiously for the next season, which is apparently all lightweights. The coaches are rumored to be Jens Pulver and BJ Penn who will fight at the end of the show in a rematch of Jens Pulver's majority decision victory at UFC 35 in 2002.

MaXfighting will be covering Season 5 and we are looking forward to it

Shamrock Joins IFL

NEW YORK, November 2, 2006– The International Fight League (IFL) today announced that MMA legend Ken Shamrock has been named as coach of the Northern California-based Lions. The addition of the Lions brings to 11 the number of teams for 2007, with one more to be added shortly. The inaugural IFL season will begin in the first quarter of 2007.

"This is a great day for the IFL and for fans of Mixed Martial Arts in general," said IFL co-founder and commissioner Kurt Otto. "We have been able to bring one of the sports greatest personalities and champions in Ken Shamrock to our organization."

"I am very proud to be joining the IFL, and believe fully in the concept as a big part of the future growth of the sport," Shamrock said. "The athletes in this sport are some of the best in the world, and I am looking forward to working with the organization to take MMA to the next level and help create the game’s next stars."

Originally one of the most popular members of the WWE, Shamrock has enjoyed a 13 year career in MMA and wrestling that has made him one of the fight world’s most recognizable personalities. He has been an MMA trailblazer, beginning in 1993 with the launch of Pancrase in Japan, and quickly emerged as one of the sports early stars. He brought that star power back to the United States, joining the original UFC group to participate in the first-ever “Superfight” (with Royce Gracie in 1993), and went on to become a star of the highly-acclaimed series “The Ultimate Fighter” on Spike TV. He also began his highly successful coaching and training career, founding the Lion's Den, a group dedicated to the training of mixed martial arts fighters. Shamrock returned to professional wrestling during it’s late 1990s success as well, competing in some of the biggest WWE cards ever before returning to MMA again in 2000. He competed first in PRIDE before retuning to the UFC in November of 2002.

In late November of 2005, he was selected by the UFC as a coach for the third season of The Ultimate Fighter and has enjoyed great success as an author, competitor and coach over the last nine years. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2004.

Founded in 2005 by Kurt Otto, a real estate investor and a life-long martial arts participant and Gareb Shamus, chairman of Wizard Entertainment Group, the International Fight League™ (IFL) was created to establish a centralized and structured organization that brings the power and influence of the mixed martial arts industry together. On August 25, 2006, IFL entered into an Agreement and Plan of Merger with Paligent, Inc. (PGNT:OTCBB), pursuant to which IFL would emerge as the surviving entity. VonFlue to Face Cung Le

November 2, 2006; New York, NY….Over the course of 16 professional kickboxing bouts and a pair of mixed martial arts contests, undefeated world San Shou kickboxing champion, Cung Le, has disposed of each of his opponents with little trouble. On Friday, December 8th, however, the 34-year-old superstar recognized for his unmatched throwing techniques will immerse himself in far deeper waters when he steps in the cage with former Spike TV reality fighter, Jason Von Flue, during Strikeforce’s “Triple Threat” mixed martial arts cage fighting card at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion.

“I definitely think he’s a step or two up,” said Le, a four-time K-1 Superfight winner and a two-time captain of The United States San Shou team that competed in Italy and China, respectively. “I think it’s gonna be a really good fight because he likes to come forward and throw and that’s what I like to do too. Sometimes matches are made that aren’t crowd pleasing. I think this one is and we’re gonna let it all hang out.”

Le’s transition from the world of stand-up fighting to mixed martial arts has, thus far, been flawless. During his debut in the cage on Friday, March 10th, the Vietnamese American made quick work of fellow kickboxer Mike Altman, scoring a hard right hook to the head that sent Altman crumbling to the mat 3 minutes and 51 seconds into the fight that was also staged at the HP Pavilion.

His second start on June 9th saw Le go to work on the canvas for the first time in his career after throwing old rival, “Mr. Unbreakable” Brian Warren, to the ground and assuming control over Warren from the top position. After the two fighters returned to their feet, Le hunted his opponent down and put Warren on the mat with a right hand at the 4:19 mark of the bout’s opening round.

“I think there’s gonna be a lot of fire (in this fight),” commented the 31-year-old Von Flue. “I think somebody, if not both of us, is going to get stitches. I just see myself hitting him as hard as I can. He likes to hit people really hard, too. I don’t think either of us have any plans to play around on the ground for more than a throw. I’ve been working really hard on my stand-up skills and I just want to be the first person to KO him.”

Von Flue also acknowledged his opponent’s skill set. “I have a lot of respect for him and his abilities,” he said. “I think he’s the best at the world at what he does, but (mixed martial arts) is a different sport.”

A semifinalist on the second season of The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)’s reality television series, Von Flue is no stranger to pressure situations. During his stint with The Ultimate Fighter, the San Luis Obispo, California native pulled off an upset victory over a more seasoned Jorge Gurgel.

Following the conclusion of the television series, Von Flue was awarded a contract with the UFC and, soon after, made his first appearance with the organization during Spike’s live broadcast of “Ultimate Fight Night 3” where he squared off with Alex Karalexis. In the third and final round of their matchup, Von Flue choked out Karalexis.

Despite his apparent preference for remaining on his feet, Le boasts a rich history in grappling. As a high school wrestler, he earned All American honors and went on to capture the California state wrestling championship during his first year of study at West Valley Junior College. To make his move to the sport of mixed combat a bit easier, Le sought the help of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trainer Garth Taylor as well as American Kickboxing Academy’s Javier Mendez and “Crazy” Bob Cook.

“I think, now, I’m a lot more aggressive and I’m learning some moves here and there and its very fun and challenging,” Le assessed. “It’s something I enjoy doing, working on my Jiu-Jitsu and my ground and pound.”

Von Flue is a product of The Pit, the famed training center that is also home to UFC light heavyweight king, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell. “I’m an entirely different fighter. I never used to throw punches before I started with him,” said Von Flue of the progression he’s experienced since becoming a student of Pit owner and head trainer, John Hackleman, over three years ago. “Now, I prefer to stand up. I’m more of a striker these days.”

Strikeforce’s 155 pound lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, will likewise attempt to extend his perfect record to 14-0 when the San Francisco, California native is challenged for his crown by an opponent that has yet to be named.

AFTER WIN IN U.S., JOSH BARNETT WANTS FEDOR

“It’s nice to go out there and put a toe-hold on somebody in front of everybody,” said Josh Barnett about his recent Pride 32 victory over Pawel Nastula.

“It’s like I said going into this…he’s an Olympic gold medalist, and if you’re an Olympic gold medalist – I’m sure that even ping-pong gold medalists are bad-ass athletes all in their own right – so, you just can’t get to that level without being an exceptional athlete, so it doesn’t really surprise me…although I did knee him square in the mouth and cracked his nose pretty good with it and he didn’t fall, so he can take a shot too,” Barnett said of Nastula.

At only 28 years-of-age, Barnett has faced an assortment of upper-echelon heavyweight fighters, and has wins over a number of them. These fighters include Mark Hunt, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Aleksander Emelianenko, among others.

Barnett, who is currently the #3 Heavyweight in the MMAWeekly Rankings, does anticipate one fight that he has yet to secure. Josh would like to duke it out with current Pride Heavyweight Champ Fedor Emelianenko, the man who many consider to be the best overall fighter in the world.

During the post-fight press conference after Pride 32 ‘The Real Deal,’ Fedor made it known that he wanted his next opponent to be “George Barnett.” After a few chuckles from the crowd, Josh, who said of “George” – “We’re doing some research on that” – was glad to be name-dropped by the champ.

Josh said, “Cool. I’m glad that he nominated me. Honestly, I think he understands the game out there. There’s not really all that many people left for him to fight, but I’m sure he’s understood for at least some time now that fighting me would be a really big match up for him.”

It does seem that Josh’s style may be hardest for Fedor to contend with. Barnett is a good wrestler, good striker and has excellent submissions on the ground…just ask Pawel Nastula, Mark Hunt, Semmy Schilt and Dan Severn…all men submitted by ‘The Babyface Assassin.’

So the question now is, if Emelianenko wants the fight, and Barnett is up for the challenge, then when can we expect to see this highly anticipated bout?

“For me, basically what it all comes down to is how training goes…and this year has been, uh…something else so far, but if I feel good, I’ll do it,” said Barnett.

There is some speculation within the MMA community that there could be a Barnett/Emelianenko match up as early as the end of the year, but there is no official word from Pride, or from either fighters’ camp on the possible fight.

Many people consider Fedor, Pride’s current and undefeated heavyweight champ; to be an unbeatable fighter...Barnett disagrees.

“There isn’t anybody that you could find on this planet that I don’t feel I’m gonna beat,” Barnett said.

Josh continued, “…There are weaknesses in all of our games. He’s been on a good streak, and he’s been having a good rash of luck as far as in exerting his will against his opponents and making them fight into his fight…but, of course, there’s weakness there, and there’s openings and opportunities for a fighter to take advantage.”

The third man in the Pride heavyweight mix is Mirko Filipovic, the winner of the most recent Pride OWGP. Barnett said of Filipovic, “He is one of the top guys in the world, and getting a win over him, or just fighting him in general is a big deal, so, I’m not personally looking for him specifically, but at the same time, if I won the heavyweight title, I would sort of feel obligated at least to give him a shot since he did just win the Open Weight Grand Prix.”

Pride brought its ring to America for the first time in the company’s history at Pride 32. It had been some time since Barnett had been able to compete in America, and Josh was glad to have the opportunity to fight on his native soil once again.

“It was cool. It was nice to have my family and my friends, and some of my sponsors and [the] audience come and take a look at me, and see me do what I do live,” Barnett said.

The one victory that Barnett really wants to solidify is his split decision win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Barnett and Nogueira fought a relatively even fight in the second round of the OWGP, with Barnett getting the nod for the win. For a competitor like Barnett, though, the win wasn’t as indubitable as he would have liked.

Josh said, “I’d like to put that guy out for good…Well, not for good exactly – I’m not trying to end the guy’s career or nothin’ – but, I’d like to take him out and put a real definitive win over him by submission or by knockout and show him – while he may not believe that I’m the better fighter, or at least that I was the better fighter that night – but he will have no choice than to know it as fact if I take him out.”

Well for now, fans can only ‘wait in the wings’ to see what Pride can put together for its New Year’s show, but it sounds like if Barnett is healthy and Fedor is willing, there will definitely be one fight that night that fans can look forward to.

IFL Adds British Team

NEW YORK, November 1, 2006 - The International Fight League (IFL) today announced the beginning of expansion into Europe by naming world champion Ian Freeman as the coach of the IFL’s English team, which will begin participation in the IFL in 2008. The English team will begin training and participating in IFL activities later this year.

"We are very excited that Ian Freeman has decided to become the first of what we expect to be several IFL entries from various countries in the next few years," said IFL co-founder and commissioner Kurt Otto. "The United Kingdom has fervent support for fight sports in general and is a growing hotbed for MMA, and we are proud to be able to begin to establish our European base with Ian and his athletes."

"Being a part of the team concept that the IFL has put together is an honor for me," Freeman said. "The UK is the perfect starting point for the league in Europe, and I am looking forward to working with, and competing against, some of the sports greatest legends as well as training many of its future stars."

A former boxer, "The Iron Ambassador," is arguably one of the most popular figures in the fight game in Europe. He began his MMA career training with world champions (and now fellow IFL coaches) Renzo Gracie and Marco Ruas and competed in amateur vale tudo before turning pro in 1999. He steadily gained notoriety, eventually taking the UFC title over Frank Mir in front of a record British crowd at Royal Albert Hall in July 2002. Freeman has trained, coached and competed in various organizations over the past few years, most recently taking the British Light Heavyweight title from Mark Epstein in September 30, 2006.

The addition of a team in the UK now brings the total of teams outside the United States to three, with more teams expected to be named in the near future. The Sabres, based in Tokyo and coached by Antonio Inoki, and the Dragons, based in Toronto, Ontario and coached by Carlos Newton, have already begun play and will be part of the IFL inaugural 12 team season that will begin in the first quarter of 2007. The final two entries for 2007, which will both be United States-based, will be announced shortly, with the full 11 date IFL schedule to follow.

LUDWIG GETS TO FLY LIKE A BIRD

Like many of his colleagues, K-1 and mixed martial arts star, Duane “Bang” Ludwig, holds an intense passion for the extreme that extends beyond combat in the squared circle or the cage. Recently, the 28-year-old took advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to test his physical and mental limits while soaring through the air in superhuman fashion.

On Tuesday, October 24th, Ludwig spent approximately 40 minutes seated inside the cockpit of an airborne United States Airforce Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon jet that rolled, looped and performed assorted other mesmerizing maneuvers while exploring the skies of Las Vegas, Nevada at an altitude of roughly 12,000 feet. The flight, which reached speeds in excess of 774 miles per hour, the speed of sound, came as part of an invitation the world Muay Thai champion had received from the staff at Las Vegas’ Nellis Air Force Base, the home of elite pilot demonstration squad, The Thunderbirds.

“Just experiencing all the power the jet has and to see all the team work and the precision that goes into being a pilot – it takes a lot of people to actually get that jet going – it was something I never knew,” said Ludwig. “I have a lot more respect now for the pilots themselves. There’s a lot more going on than I thought as far as the teamwork and the dedication. It’s just like how people don’t realize all the training fighters do. They think that we just go in the ring and fight for three, five-minute rounds and that’s it. There’s loads of preparation that goes into a fight.”

Ironically, the Denver, Colorado native described his flight which, for the most part, spanned the mountains of Death Valley, as a serene experience conducive to meditation rather than a nerve-wracking episode that one might imagine would unfold while participating in such an intense activity for the first time.

“Just to be able to move so freely, it kind of felt like being a bird, even though you’re strapped into the seat,” said Ludwig, who was given his tour through the sky by Major Nicole Malachowski, the first female demonstration pilot in the history of any major demonstration team in The United States. “Nothing mattered up there. You’re all alone. It’s really weird in a way.”

For Ludwig, the biggest surprise of the trip was his encounter with gravitational force, more commonly referred to as “g-force.” Gauged in numerical units, g-force is a measure of pressure being placed against a given object. One g is equivalent to the weight of the human body and is the amount of pressure an individual faces while in a normal sitting position. During the excursion, Ludwig endured as much as five g’s, or five times his body weight, being pressed against him.

“Every area of your body is just being compressed down. It’s amazing to feel that,” described the fighter. “I never even really thought about it. You see pilots in movies and it looks like they’re just flying around and they look like nothing’s happening to them, like no g-force is affecting them. But when they’re actually flying, they’re getting crushed down and it’s amazing that they can still control the jet and fly perfectly.”

Southworth Clashes With ‘Tiger’ For Strikeforce Championship

October 31, 2006; New York, NY….Spike TV’s most infamous reality fighter, Bobby Southworth, will battle hard-punching road warrior, Vernon “Tiger” White, in the first-ever Strikeforce mixed martial arts light heavyweight (205 lb) championship bout at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Friday, December 8th. The matchup will be one of three title fights to take place on the star-studded Strikeforce “Triple Threat” bill being presented by BodogFIGHT.

“It’s gonna be an honor for me to take this title and come home with it,” said the 35-year-old White, a 13-year veteran of the professional fight game who has seen action in every major mixed martial arts organization from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to Japan’s K-1 and Pride Fighting Championship. “It means a lot to me. I’ve held titles in three other organizations and I want another one.”

A longtime protégé and training partner of UFC Hall of Fame member, Ken Shamrock, White is recognized as a founding member of Shamrock’s fight team, “The Lion’s Den.” Southworth’s alliance with American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), the former home of Shamrock’s estranged, adopted brother, Frank, has White taking the upcoming matchup somewhat personally.

“Frank has said some disparaging remarks about Ken and it’s not right,” explained Tiger. “I know that (Bobby) used to train with Frank, so that, in itself, makes me want to go out there and bury him because I know he thinks he’s got submission skills.”

White’s no frills, crowd pleasing style of hybrid combat has helped the Palo Alto, California resident produce a host of memorable moments in the sport, including a first round knockout of former Pride Fighting Championship star, Alex Stiebling. “I’ve been focused on knocking fools out because that’s what the fans want,” insisted White, who, outside of his work with The Lion’s Den, has dabbled in a host of different fighting disciplines, including Tae Kwon Do, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and several traditional Japanese martial arts. “I like to stand up and bang with people. I’m there to fight. I don’t like hugging and kissing and all that stuff.”

The 36-year-old Southworth introduced himself to the masses two years ago after being selected to compete on the premiere season of Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter. In the running with seven other light heavyweights, Southworth reached the semifinal round of elimination on the 12 week reality series that sent one of its original 16 contestants home each week and awarded its winner in each of two weight classes a six-figure contract with the.

One of the sport’s more vocal athletes, Southworth became a central focus on the hit show, namely for his ongoing feud with middleweight contestant, Chris Leben. “Even though I didn’t win the show, I was probably the most visible character on it,” noted Southworth. “I was in every single episode. Even after the episode in which I was eliminated, the first 20 minutes of the next show was still devoted to the exchange that (UFC President) Dana White and I had.”

Prior to making his debut on national television, Southworth was instrumental in establishing the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program offered at AKA. He also spearheaded the formation of a team of top mixed martial arts competitors at the gym.

The December 8th card will host the third-career mixed martial arts start of undefeated 185-pound world San Shou kickboxing champion, Cung Le. During a Strikeforce matchup at the HP Pavilion on June 9th, Le stopped rival “Mr. Unbreakable” Brian Warren with a right hand in the first round of action to notch his second victory in the cage.

Strikeforce’s 155 pound lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, will likewise attempt to extend his perfect record to 14-0 when the San Francisco, California native is challenged for his crown by an opponent that has yet to be named.

UFC 66: Forrest is back

Forrest Griffin returns at UFC 66 and he will be stepping in to the Octagon against another TUF veteran, Keith Jardine. Forrest is 4-1 in UFC action with his only loss being a split decision against Tito Ortiz at UFC 59. In contrast, Jardine is just 3-1 with his one loss being to Forrest's eternal foe/friend, Stephan Bonnar. DESPITE SURGERY CRO COP STILL WANTS NEW YEAR'S FIGHT

PRIDE 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix winner Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic successfully underwent surgery to remove a small piece of bone in his left foot. According to the Croatian news site ‘Justranji’, Mirko will return home on Monday from Switzerland and is expected to rehabilitate his foot for two weeks before training again.

Mirko revealed that he initially suffered his injury from his fight with Mark Hunt at last year’s PRIDE Shockwave show. The Grand Prix champion commented on how the surgery went smoothly and stated that his foot will not be completely healed until December. Despite the recovery time, “Cro Cop” still wishes to participant in PRIDE’s New Year’s event. If Mirko is able to fight at Shockwave, it’s unlikely that he’ll face the current PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko in an anticipated rematch.

Mirko expects his foot to be fully healed in time for a potential showdown with Fedor Emelianenko in February, which would land the fight on Pride’s next American show in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 24th.
