TRIGG READY TO RUMBLE ON THE ROCK

Frank Trigg goes one on one with his broadcasting partner, Ryan Bennett as Trigg addresses plenty of subjects, from his previous fights to his future events.

MMAWeekly.com: Is the old Frank Trigg back?

Frank Trigg: Sure . . . whatever. I was gone for a year, so yeah I'm back.

MMAWeekly.com: What do you mean you were gone?

Trigg: I was gone right before the last Hughes fight. I had a hell of a lot going on. The divorce caught up with me, not being able to see my kids, my finances, losing to Matt twice the same way, it all caught up with me. It's taken me awhile to figure it out, but I have."

MMAWeekly.com: Same thing with St.Pierre?

Trigg: "I didn't want to fight that much. I was still pissed about the Hughes fight. If I beat Georges then what. What did that do for me? I wasn't getting a title fight with Hughes even if I won. That's the only fight in the history of my career I should have never fought. You told me that, people close to me told me about it, everyone told me about it. I shouldn't have taken the fight. I wasn't in a good place mentally, but you know I never turn down a fight. That's the one fight I should have turned down. You live and learn.

MMAWeekly: You bounce back with a win over Ronald Jhun. How would you grade your performance in that fight?

Trigg: C. My boxing was an A. My ability to fight was good. The fight was probably a C or C+ on my end. Two losses were on my mind and I didn't want three. I fought not to lose instead of winning. I was average in that fight.

MMAWeekly: What did you learn about that fight?

Trigg: It showed me even when I half train half hearted that I'm still a very good fu$%^ing fighter. I don't want to say I've trained harder at this point of my career, but I've trained smarter and more efficient. I'm smarter now.

MMAWeekly: Let's talk about this fight and tournament. I will give you a name, and you give me a response. Carlos Condit

Trigg: "He's young, he's hungry and he's tough. But, he's not as hungry as me he isn’t as tough as me and he isn’t as good looking as me. Translation I will beat his ass."

MMAWeekly.com: "What's your thought on Jake Shields?"

Trigg - "Who"

MMAWeekly.com: Jake Shields . . .

Trigg: "Who".

MMAWeekly.com: Jake Shields

Trigg: "Never heard of him . . . next question."

MMAWeekly.com: How about Yushin Okami?

Trigg: I had that for dinner last night, it was good.

MMAWeekly.com: How about the fighter?

Trigg: I don't know much about him. He may be the worst match up for me because I know the least about him. He might get through Shields but I doubt it. I could have problems with that dude if I don't pay attention.

MMAWeekly.com: How would you sum up 2005?

Trigg: The worst year of my fuc%ing life.

MMAWeekly.com: And 2006?

Trigg: The best year of my life. I can feel it. Just watch.

MMAWeekly: Has Frank Trigg trained for this fight?

Just My Thoughts: The Radius Surrounding UFC 59
by Mike Sloan

As of Saturday night, one thing is certain: everybody at Zuffa is thanking their lucky stars that UFC 59 was not on the same level as Ultimate Fight Night 4.

Let’s face it, last week’s live SpikeTV event inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was a complete disaster.

Aside from the Joe Stevenson-Josh Neer battle, which was moderately entertaining, the card was as dull as one of those plastic knives you get with a can of Play-Doh.

Like UFC 59, however, season three of The Ultimate Fighter doesn’t seem to be terrible either. After two episodes, I am hooked deeper into this season than to the inaugural version.

The fighters have personality, nobody is trying to be the next Chris Leben (yet), Tito and Ken’s animosity is actually not stale like I figured it would be, and no longer do we, the viewers, have to endure a string of endless dopey and uninspired challenges.

The only thing I can say about TUF 3, however, is towards Ed Herman. Who does this sound like, with tears in his eyes: “Waaaahhhhh! Tito didn’t pick me! Waaaaahhhhh.” If you guessed “Short Fuse” Herman, you are correct.

But enough of UFN and TUF and onto the real aspect of this column: UFC 59.

I expected great things from UFC 59 “Reality Check.”

I expected to watch at least six fights. I expected to watch the best UFC in what seems like eons. And I expected a corny, lame event title. It looks like I hit on all three pre-event musings.

Come on: “Reality Check”? It appears Zuffa is running out of extreme, trendy subtitles. It’s time to just keep the events numbered. There is no longer a need to attach some hokey moniker to the event anymore.

What’s next? “UFC 66: Puttin’ on the Hits” or “UFC 70: If You Can’t Stand the Heat, Get Out of the Kitchen” or “UFC 89: What Happens in the Octagon … Stays in the Octagon” or even “UFC 81: I’m Gonna Get You Sucka”?

Let’s leave it at UFC 59 and call it a day.

Aside from that minor gripe, which really isn’t a gripe, I was thoroughly entertained by UFC 59. Sure, the Jeff Monson-Marcio Cruz bout was a total bore, but at least one of those fights is going to happen on every card no matter who the promoter or matchmaker is. Joe Silva made the best match he could and it wound up being the cure for insomnia.

It happens.

However, once UFC 59 concluded, many questions were answered from various fighters and many new questions were raised for others. The event was to be a showcase for the return of Tito Ortiz, still the most marketable man in North American mixed martial arts. It also was supposed to prove to casual fans that Andrei Arlovski is the second coming of the T-1000. And Karo Parisyan, I might add, should be next in line for a shot at Matt Hughes’ welterweight title.

Sylvia Stops Arlovski

This fight somehow allowed my arch nemesis, Greg Savage, to score his fifth straight victory over me in our “Great Sherdog Debates.” But it really proved four things.

Sylvia was able to avenge one of his two career losses and it was moving to see the big lug tearing up when that belt was wrapped around his waist. He trained harder than ever for this fight and it’s fitting that a good guy like Sylvia was able to regain his championship.

But like I said, Andrei Arlovski versus Sylvia was revealing.

For starters, the stunning and exciting victory showed that Arlovski isn’t nearly as good as everybody said he was. “The Pitbull” was being touted as the best heavyweight in the world heading into the battle and once the fight was over, he wasn’t even the best heavyweight in the UFC.

Sure, Arlovski was shredding his opposition in highlight-reel fashion, but the warrior from Belarus was, in my opinion, grossly overrated and essentially unproven.

His rematch with Sylvia proved me right. It looks like that showdown between Arlovski and the best heavyweight on Earth, PRIDE’s Fedor Emelianenko, will now certainly never happen with both titles on the line. Looking on the bright side, though, it’s safe to say that the UFC saved itself an embarrassing loss to their Japanese rival.

Second, the fight showed that Sylvia isn’t as crummy as everybody said he was. After having his arm snapped like a twig against the underachieving Frank Mir and then being knocked down and submitted by Arlovski when they first met, most insiders and fans jumped on the anti-Tim Sylvia bandwagon. Most figured he’d be cannon fodder in the rematch and after he was dropped by a crushing right hand, most figured that the pre-fight criticism of Sylvia was just. That was until Arlovski ran into a right uppercut.

Sylvia showed resilience and poise after being badly wobbled by getting back to his feet and ending the fight with one punch. So much for “The Maine-Iac” being some flash in the pan chump.

The third thing learned from this fight is that no matter what goes on during the heat of battle, as long as you can punch, you have a chance. Everybody knows how brutal Sylvia’s right hand is when he lands it and Arlovski was a bit too reckless when he gunned for the finish. Sylvia can punch. He punched Arlovski and the fight ended.

Fourth, and most critical, in MMA anything can happen. That is what makes our beloved sport so exceptional. Sylvia was a gross underdog coming in and he stopped the champ only a few minutes into the opening round. Hardly any other sport can boast this truth.

Ortiz is Back

Tito Ortiz’s split decision win over Forrest Griffin was a close fight with both men giving as much as they took. Ortiz said afterwards that he entered the cage with a possible torn ACL and MCL, yet he fought on anyway. Griffin allegedly had a bad ankle before the bell started, yet he did the same as Tito.

The fight was exciting, it was close and both fighters actually won.

What shocked me was how Griffin was able to defend the Tito ground-n-pound enough to escape. He was pummeled, cut and on the verge of possibly being rescued by the referee, yet he hung tough and waited for the perfect moment to spring back onto his feet.

Ortiz also shocked me with how solid his stand-up attack was. His left jab was working beautifully and he landed arguably the best punches of his entire career in the third round of this memorable encounter.

The decision was correct, too. Ortiz won the fight but it was close. Even Griffin acknowledged that after the fight. Both men were honest and Tito didn’t fail to market himself further. The man is a genius when it comes to promoting himself. Love him or hate him, he is an integral part of American MMA.

Misc. Debris

The only gripe I had with the telecast was that the broadcast team of Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan wasted too much time bantering back and forth about upcoming UFC events and other nonsense. They could have done it during some of the fights (like Monson-Cruz) and Zuffa could have easily shown the other three off-TV bouts.

Two ended in the first round and the other was halted early in the second. At least 30 minutes of precious airtime was wasted when these three fights could have been delivered to the paying public.

Nick Diaz deserved to lose because he didn’t really do too much against Sean Sherk. Maybe it’s time for Diaz to switch teams? He hasn’t looked anywhere near as explosive lately as he has throughout his career. He’s lost three in a row and it’s doubtful that he’ll be welcomed back inside the Octagon for his next fight or two. He has unlimited potential. I just hope it’s not going to go to waste.

Evan Tanner will fight for the middleweight title by the end of the year. If he can lay waste to another victim like he did Justin Levens, Rich Franklin will have his work cut out for him when they meet a third time. Franklin has nobody else to fight in the UFC and a third fight with Tanner makes sense, provided Tanner dominates another foe.

So in closing, UFC 59 was stellar. While it wasn’t the best UFC in history, it certainly was better than the last few events Zuffa threw our way. Hopefully the full card of UFC 60 will be stacked because to be honest, I could not care less about Hughes-Gracie. What a farce that fight will be!

SYLVIA REGAINS TITLE AT UFC 59
Sylvia Regains Title and Tito Triumphant in Return

UFC 59 in Review

In a year that has already seen its fair share of upsets, Tim Sylvia proved just about everybody wrong and defeated Andrei Arlovski in the first round of their fight, regaining the UFC heavyweight title.

In front of a packed house at the Pond, in Anaheim, California, Tim Sylvia was able to withstand a very heavy shot from his opponent early in the fight and recover almost immediately which led to him landing a punch of his own that floored the now former champion. As Arlovski fell to the mat and covered up, Sylvia seized the moment and started to reign down bombs on his head, causing the referee to call a stop to the fight and declared Tim Sylvia the new UFC heavyweight champion.

It was Arlovski’s initial shot that brought the crowd to its feet, but just as quickly, Sylvia recovered and caught Arlovski with a short uppercut that sent him to the canvas. The referee stopped the fight before any harm could come to Arlovski, who was raising his hand to block the oncoming shots but doing nothing to improve his position on the ground to prevent the strikes. Tim Sylvia, who was seemingly written off before this fight ever even happened, walked out champion and puts the title back around his waste, something he has adamantly stated was his ultimate goal.

In other action, Tito Ortiz made his return to the octagon to take on Forrest Griffin, and much like his last fight with Vitor Belfort, controversy reigned supreme as Ortiz walked out with a split decision victory.

As the fight began, Tito looked like he was back in his old form when he took Griffin down and proceeded to absolutely unleash a barrage of punches and elbows from inside his guard. Tito’s double leg takedown was flawless and quick, just like when he was taking out fighters like Ken Shamrock only a few years ago. He opened a cut above and below Forrest’s left eye that made many wonder if the fight would even see a second round.

Griffin did survive the first round and as the second began, something seemed to change with Tito’s approach to the fight. He was stepping fairly gingerly throughout the second round and his shot was much slower and he wasn’t driving through his opponent to truly go for the takedown. Griffin did however go for a number of combinations to score the necessary points to win the second round, but did no real damage to Ortiz.

The third started off with more of the same, but this time both men started to land more shots that could have put an end to the fight. Tito was stuffed a few times when he was going for takedowns in the 2nd and 3rd rounds but did manage to finally get a hold of Griffin’s leg later in the last round and he started to open up with more punches and elbows.

The judges scored in a split decision for Tito Ortiz, and many fans were upset with the announcement and started to boo in the arena. The fact is that when the fight was over, Forrest had multiple lacerations on his face and very well could have lost the first round with a 10-8 score due to the pounding that Ortiz gave out. The second round was definitely Forrest but he did nothing to really show dominance with something like a takedown or a knockdown. The third was more even, but Tito’s striking was on par that round and he did manage the one takedown that allowed him to resume his ground and pound attack. In the end both fighters should be proud of their performances but unfortunately it was revealed post fight that Tito has a tear in he ACL and MCL in his knee and may be out for an undisclosed amount of time.

In a fight that helped to determine the #1 contender for the heavyweight title, Jeff Monson took on Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz in what ended up being a fairly boring fight. Both fighters pride themselves on ground fighting but most of this battle took place on the feet, with Monson landing the more effective shots despite giving up more than just a few inches in reach. In the end Monson won a split decision over Cruz and will now wait for a chance to take on the new champion, Tim Sylvia.

Evan Tanner returned in great fashion with a triangle choke victory over WEC veteran, Justin Levens, who did take the fight on only a few weeks notice. Tanner went back to working on the ground, which is what made him such a dangerous opponent for many years. Levens did fight very hard and should be commended for taking the fight on short notice and still putting on a great fight.

In the swing bout, Sean Sherk fought at 170lbs for the last time apparently before he drops to fight at 155lbs when he won by judges decision over Nick Diaz. The fight was pretty uneventful with the exception of a couple takedowns that Sherk was able to secure and a couple of submissions attempted by Diaz. Neither fighter truly dominated but Sherk did get the victory and now its wait and see if Nick Diaz will return to the octagon after his third straight loss.

Overall, UFC 59 has to be seen as a success with the debut in California and a sold out crowd standing behind them at all times. Sylvia’s win was unexpected but it does open up some interesting possibilities for future match-ups. Tito Ortiz won his fight and probably won’t get a chance to fight again until he’s healthy and that will likely be against Ken Shamrock after the Ultimate Fighter season 3 ends.

Prelim Results compiled by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Thiago Alves was rocked early by body shots by Derrick Noble in their highly anticpated rematch, but Alves changed everything with a wicked right hand that dropped Noble and Alves wins at 2:54 of Round 1 by TKO. Referee Mario Yamasaki pulled Alves off Noble for Thiago's impressive win.

Jason Lambert had to survive an onslaught of big punches by Terry Martin in the first round. Lambert survived the power of Martin and showed that he was in much better shape than Martin as he wore the fighter from Chicago down in Round 2. Lambert would secure a takedown in Round 2 and get the win by TKO at 2:37 of the second round.

In a controversial finish, David Terrell wins by rear naked choke at 3:08 of Round 1 over Scott Smith. New referee Mario Lopez in the middle of Round 1 called for a break in the action. Both fighters were in the clinch position, when the referee called for a stop in the action. Smith stopped battling for position then Lopez, the referee, called for action to resume right after he said stop. Smith had relaxed when the referee stopped the action, Terrell heard Lopez call for action, secured the takedown and put on a rear naked choke for the win. Terrell was clearly NOT in the wrong as he followed the referee's instruction. Smith was clearly disgusted by the referee's "stop and go" command. Lopez was clearly in the wrong in this fight as Terrell gets the win.

Karo Parisyan improved to 23-3 in his MMA career as he took out Nick Thompson in a welterweight bout. Parisyan looked very sharp after his 8 month layoff due to injury as he outworked Thompson for the win. Parisyan would put a finish to the fight at 4:44 of Round 1 as Thompson tapped out just before the end of the first round.

LATEST ON QUINTON JACKSON SWEEPSTAKES

He is the most desired free agent in the MMA market. It’s known that up to seven organizations have been bidding for the man known as Rampage. The top promotions trying to land Quinton have been the big players including the UFC, Pride, Strikeforce, WFA and the IFL. Those big organizations were interested in throwing out money to sign Rampage.

MMAWeekly.com has learned that the WFA has made a very aggressive pitch and is very close to signing Rampage as the WFA seems to be the most likely destination for Jackson. The WFA is looking for a huge free agent signing and Quinton is their target.

The WFA of course thought they had another high profile signing in Tito Ortiz. The promotion thought they had Tito signed to be the star in the promotion, however the Huntington Beach Bad Boy bolted for a new contract in the UFC and being a coach on Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter”. Matt Lindland was supposed to go the WFA as well, but he's also apparently on his way back the UFC as a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 4 as the UFC brings back UFC veterans on Season 4 of the Ultimate Fighter in the 185 and 170 pound division.

So it puts the WFA in a tough situation to sign a high profile free agent and Jackson feels that void. Jackson's former manager is a high profile figure in the WFA which is slated to start in the summer. So while nothing has been signed just yet, look for Jackson to stay in the states for a big money deal in the WFA.

Congrats to Scott & Angie Devine!

Relson Gracie black belt, founding member of Academia Casca Grossa de Jiu-Jitsu, and former Relson Gracie main academy assistant instructor, Scott Devine along with his wife Angie added another member to the team by having another baby girl recently. Why do I say another? Well, this makes the seventh child of Team Devine. I think they are secretly building up the team and working on out numbering the Gracie family.

Congrats to the rapidly growing Clan Devine.

Ultimate Fighter 3, Episode 2

Things started off with a recap of last week, showing Kalib’s win over an overmatched Mike Stines. Shamrock was convinced that his team already had the show sewn up, as they would now “pick Tito’s team apart fighter by fighter”. He also alluded to the fact that Tito would become mouthier after the loss, which did not happen by the way. Say what you want about Tito, but he is a smart and intelligent fighter and so far has been compassionate as any coach could be.

Team Shamrock selected Jesse Forbes to fight Noah Inhofer and I immediately questioned why Ken made this match up. Noah looked very strong in last week’s training; however, Ken apparently thought that Jesse’s strength was more than enough for the gangly Inhofer to handle. This would prove to be a mistake.

The house provided several “Real World” like moments. The Brits, Michael Bisping and Ross Pointon arguing about who stopped up the toilet. Jesse basically destroying anything he can get his hands on. Nevertheless, the most dominant and recurring image of the show was a basketball…a basketball.

During a training session early in the show after the fight selections, Tito had repeatedly told Noah to keep his hands up. In a rather clever move, Ortiz gave Inhofer a ball to trap between his bicep and his cheek to practice keeping his hands up. This provided the main ingredient and catalyst for the rest of the show. Instead of detailing every little piece of the basketball conspiracy for you, let me sum up.

Boy gets basketball. Basketball used as soccer ball in house by Kendall and Ross. Ball taken outside. Terrible soccer skills and ball goes flying and lands in a large body of water. Boy comes home and cannot find the basketball. Boy hears that Tait Fletcher, the emerging easy to hate villain of the show, was the culprit and asks him to get his ball back for him. Tait breaks bad. Boy decides to let it go, Kendall gets the ball for him. Boy goes to training and returns to find that Tait and a few others have convinced impressionable Jesse to stab the ball and leave it in Noah’s bed. Boy climbs in bed, glances at ball, and turns the light off to go to sleep.

With the ball incident behind us, let us move on to the weekly Team Shamrock drama. Kalib Starnes was taking it very easy in his sparring with Ross Pointon and this made Shamrock angry. Shamrock scolded Starnes and told him that just because he won he can’t afford to sit back and be lazy. They stepped their intensity up, Kalib bruised his thigh causing him to stop and leave the octagon without permission, and Pointon followed close behind. Ken snapped and proceeded to lecture the entire group for quite a while, making the same points repeatedly. Kalib’s mouth repeatedly fires off snotty little retorts towards almost all of Ken’s points. NOTE: If this were the Lion’s den, Ken would have thrashed Starnes and sent him home crying: END NOTE

The coolest point of the show was when Tito managed to get an interpreter for Matt Hamill and there was an immediate change in the deaf fighter’s demeanor. Several times Michael Bisping expressed displeasure about just how much time their coach was spending with Matt because “he flew halfway around the world to be on the show”. Later on, Tito shocks us once again and comes to the house to make the guys a surprisingly delicious looking spaghetti dinner. Many of the guys appreciated this, but Bisping couldn’t get past his jealousy towards Matt and current disdain for Tito and sat far away from their coach.

Noah Inhofer had to try to overcome an injury in his fight with Jesse. Team Ortiz had a late training session the night before the fight and some of the teammates expressed their concerns that Noah would get injured. It turns out that their concerns were warranted because during basic drill work Noah sprains his foot. After a quick trip to the doctor’s it is determined that nothing is broken and Noah can still fight.

On fight day, both fighters march to the ring very confidently and ready to battle. Team Ortiz had agreed not to let anyone else know about the injury, but it was obvious to most due to the large amount of tape on Noah’s foot. The fight starts and Jesse connects with a big right and Noah counters. Another flurry and they go to the ground. Jesse lands some serious bombs and elbows but Inhofer keeps his composure. Noah is following Tito’s coaching to the letter and secures an armbar that Forbes tries desperately to roll out of. After a rollout attempt, Noah sinks it in deeper and Jesse taps out giving Noah the win and revenge for the basketball stabbing. Ortiz now controls the next fight match-up on the next show.
The show closes with Ed Herman again saying, “Tito will regret not picking me”

CroCop brings in Brazilian Heavyweights

There was not enough time to unpack. Few hours after landing at a Croatian airport Brazilians Vitor Miranda and Rodrigo Riscado left the building on the way to Pride star Mirko Cro Cop's residence. In there, no cookies or welcome party were expecting the Brazilians fighters. Their party was on Mirko's private ring, an official pride sized ring located at his personal gym.

While BJJ black belt Rodrigo Riscado is in charge of teaching the soft art to Croatian police officer, Vitor Miranda, who has won the title of best heavyweight fighter of Brazilian Muyat Thai at Heavyweight Factory GP 1, has been sharing his knowledge of striking with Cro Cop. "Brazilian Muay Thai has different techniques and I am sure I'll learn a lot and teach few tricks to Cro Cop," stated Miranda, who also received compliments from the leader of Cro Cop Squad.

- Miranda has been Mirko' sparring on the feet and Cro Cop got very impressed by his technical evolution and resistance. Rodrigo Riscado has been training on the ground in order to develop and improve Mirko's game ?
told Sérgio Batarelli, the fight manager responsible for their trip to Croatia.

Batarelli also commented on Riscado impresses. "He said Mirko plays a very hard anti-game and his guard seems like a strong pliers", he added.

Brazilians remain in Croatia until May 2nd, when travel to Japan, where they will see Mirko's performance against Japanese Ikuhisa Minowa at Pride GP Openweight, scheduled to May 5, at Osaka Dome, Osaka, in Japan.

SNOWMAN HOPES FOR UFC TITLE SHOT

At UFC 59 not only will the UFC Heavyweight Championship be determined between Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia, but as well the number one contendership will be up for grabs when Jeff Monson and Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz face off against each other earlier in the evening.

Shortly before leaving for Anaheim for the UFC’s first ever trip into California, Monson spoke to MMA Weekly to discuss the fight and where he sees his career going from here.

For Monson this is not only a chance to take a major step forward in his career, but also finally get into the cage with an individual he has long wanted the opportunity to fight in Cruz. And while he has no professional liking for Marcio, Jeff won’t let the hype surrounding the fight effect his gameplan.

“We’ve kind of gone at it a few times grappling and this is the first time we’re having an MMA fight. I’m not going to get caught up in all the hype, the ‘I hate him, he hates me,’ stuff,” admitted Monson. “I don’t hate him or anything like that; I don’t even know him as a person. I just think he has a weak heart. I feel that if I go after him hard he’ll quit.”

Jeff continued, “He’s just another guy on the way to the title. We have history together, but that doesn’t matter, ultimately I need to win this fight. I’m not looking past this guy. He’s not going to knock me out but he can get on top and try to ground out a decision or try to get a submission, so I’m going to take him seriously.”

Both fighters participated at UFC 57, Monson defeating Branden Lee Hinke and Cruz upsetting former Heavyweight Champ Frank Mir. As Jeff explained, he feels Marcio will try to do the same thing against him that he did to Mir with slight alterations.

“He’s a smart fighter and so I expect that he’s going to come out and I think he thinks he’s going to throw punches with me,” said Monson. “If he does that’s his mistake. I think he’s going to try to throw punches, take me down, get on top of me and ground ‘n pound like he did Frank.”

“He’s not an easy guy to take down, people say that I’m the better wrestler, but he’s not easy to take down. I don’t know that I want to take him down, I’d definitely like to trade punches with him,” added Jeff.

The winner of this fight is said to become the number one contender for the title to be determined in UFC 59’s main event between Arlovski and Sylvia. As Monson sees it, either he or Cruz would deserve a title shot and they could bring something different to the table against Arlovski if he retains his title.

“I heard it from them so I think the winner of this will fight the winner of Arlovski/Sylvia and I’d be shocked to see it any other way,” commented Jeff. “I had a good last fight and he (Cruz) beat the former champ, a guy that never lost it really, so I think that definitely the winner of this fight should be in line for a title fight.”

Monson further commented, “I know people think there are not a lot of other people out there that could compete with Arlovski at this point because he’s so well-rounded, but the one thing that we (Monson and Cruz) can beat him at, both of us, is we can submit him.”

When asked who he hopes will win between Andrei and Tim, Jeff is conflicted between friendships and wanting a fight he feels would more validate Championship should he compete and win it in the future.

“I know Tim Sylvia so I’ll be rooting for him, but if I had to pick who I’d want to fight, I’d fight Arlovski,” admitted Monson. He hasn’t lost in the UFC in a long time and has demolished everyone, so I think he’s it.”

“No disrespect to Tim, but Arlovski’s just the most well-rounded fighter, even more well-rounded than I am, so hopefully when I get my shot at the title it’s against him,” continued Jeff.

Monson closed out the conversation by reiterating his thoughts on just how important UFC 59 will be not only for the company’s present, but for its future as well.

“I definitely want the fans to watch this; this is the biggest UFC ever. It’s the fastest sell-out ever, so it’s a big show,” concluded Jeff. “To me everyone’s kind of saying that the heavyweight division is down and that Arlovski is tearing through everyone, but that the guy that’s going to beat him is fighting that night too. I think when they see Pe De Pano and me; they’ll see the guy that’s going to beat him (Arlovski). Basically the winner of our fight is going to with the UFC Heavyweight Title.”

INTERNATIONAL FREESTYLE FIGHTING - DEBUT INAUGURAL EVENT

IFF Press Release:

Big-time fights are back in Fort Worth, and they return in an all-new
and explosive format. The inaugural event from International Freestyle
Fighting (IFF), set to occur on May 6, 2006, at Will Rogers Coliseum,
brings exciting mixed martial arts action to town! Featuring the best
fighters from Texas matched against top competition from around the
country, the card is headlined by Fort Worth resident and
internationally renowned mixed martial arts star Travis Lutter.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) - a combination of boxing, wrestling, muay
thai, judo, jiu jitsu and other combat disciplines - is no doubt the
fastest-growing sport in the world, already watched by millions live
and on pay-per-view. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) promotion,
which is currently the premier MMA organization in the United States, stages
the majority of its events in Las Vegas and is now the most popular
attraction on cable television channel Spike TV.

Now, with the announcement of the first IFF event, Texas fight fans can
experience the hard-hitting excitement of the very best MMA has to
offer, LIVE, for the first time!

IFF's show on May 6 brings together a wealth of talent from many
different fighting styles and several countries. In the main event of the
evening, Lutter, a veteran of the UFC and a black belt in the fighting art
Brazilian jiu jitsu (8-3), is set to take on Cedric "Spiderman" Marks
(22-13), of Bremerton, Washington. In addition to his world class
groundskills, Lutter brings devastating one-punch knockout power to the
ring, best demonstrated in his astonishing and brutal victory over
kickboxer Marvin Eastman (an MMA, UFC and K-1 star in his own right) at
UFC 50. Marks, meanwhile, is a dangerous fighter no matter who his
opponent is or where the action ends up, having his wins divided
equally between knockouts and submissions.

In addition to Marks and Lutter, the card features fellow UFC veterans
Pete "The Secret Weapon" Spratt and Gerald "The Finishing Machine"
Strebendt, two fighters consistently ranked amongst the best at their
respective weights.

Spratt - a four-time UFC veteran and one of the most popular fighters
in the sport of MMA - is best known for his lethal striking style,
displayed to devastating effect when his kicks dismantled heavily-favored Pat
Miletich student "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler at UFC 42. Spratt is known as
one of the most exciting fighters in any combat sport and is no doubt
ready to deliver another electrifying performance when he steps into
the ring on May 6th.

Strebendt, who UFC commentator and grappling innovator Eddie Bravo calls Strebendt his "top student", is set to face Dallas resident Shervin Alavi at the first IFF event. Alavi, a kickboxer and Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist, has enjoyed success in smaller Texas events but faces a different breed of fighter in Strebendt. Best known for choking out Jean "The White Bear" Silva - a veteran of the world's biggest MMA event, Pride Fighting Championships - Strebendt attacks his opponents with incessant and lightning-fast submission holds which few fighters can withstand. Alavi will be looking to make a name for himself by defeating the highly-regarded UFC veteran, while "The Finishing Machine" will be looking to live up to his nickname by dispatching another opponent in quick and exciting fashion.

FIGHT PROFESSOR BREAKS DOWN UFC 59

The one and only Fight Professor, Stephen Quadros breaks down UFC 59 on BudoVideos.com and shares his thoughts with MMAWeekly as well.

It feels good typing the word “California” at the top of this preview, real good. Yes, the main “reality” in this is that MMA is HERE…in the golden state; the UFC will finally make it’s debut in Cali. The ‘other reality’ is that this UFC is headlined by…

UFC Heavyweight Championship
Andrei Arlovski (Belarus)

Vs.

Tim Sylvia (USA)

UFC heavyweight champion Andrei “Pitbull” Arlovski may have to get a restraining order to prevent Tim Sylvia from getting any more title shots during the Belarusian’s reign “if” he beats the “Maine-iac” again. This is really getting like the Halloween film series where Michael Myers will always come back for one more go (tonight’s main event is Sylvia’s FOURTH title shot in 3 years, including when he took the championship from Ricco Rodriguez in 2003). And big Tim is not to blame here. What’s he supposed to say when the UFC comes calling? “Oh no, I don’t want another try at being UFC heavyweight champion?” I don’t think so. The “reality” question remains, if it’s not Sylvia to challenge Arlovski, then who else is worthy in the UFC’s current heavyweight fish bowl? Or better yet, just how does one ‘qualify’ for a title shot? Food for thought…

Anyway…this match will most likely unfold like a déjà vu of their last dance in February 2005 (UFC 51), where Andrei dropped Tim with a cobra-quick punch and made him tap with an Achilles lock. So what has changed since then that lead us to think differently? Not much. There is no doubt that Andrei Arlovski is still the FASTEST heavyweight in the UFC and seems unstoppable…in that universe.

Sylvia is a threat if you get caught with one of those humungous punches, although his head kick KO of Tra Telligman suggests his overall striking arsenal might be growing. But he does not have the quickness to beat Andrei to the punch. Therefore I foresee an outcome that will be almost identical to their last fight: Arlovski will hit him in the head, the fight will go to the ground, where Andrei will end it, maybe by ground and pound, but a submission is more likely.

Tito Ortiz

Vs.

Forrest Griffin

I have had countless conversations about TUF (The Ultimate Fighter TV show) and whether the fighters who come from that show can ‘hang’ with UFC champions. TUF contestant Nate Quarry was definitely thrown to the lions when he was given a “title shot” against UFC middleweight king Rich Franklin (Quarry was KO’d quickly in the first round).

Technically Tito Ortiz in not the champion anymore. But now that Randy Couture has retired, Ortiz could be ranked, if the UFC ever did such a thing (as fighter rankings), as high as #2, right behind champ Chuck Liddell. This is based solely on his accomplishments inside the Octagon.

Forrest Griffin was the winner of the first TUF season finals, by the narrowest of margins, with a gutsy effort against Stephan Bonnar (some people felt Bonnar had done enough to win). Since then he went through Canadian journeyman Bill Mahood (rear naked choke) and had a war with Australia’s Elvis Sinosic before stopping him in the first round. Throughout his career (Sherdog lists him as being 12-2) Forrest has always exhibited loads of heart and has been known on occasion to come from behind to pull a win out of the fire.

As likable and charismatic as Griffin is, he will be over his head experience-wise with Tito. Ortiz also has one of the best wrestling-based games in the sport. And although ground and pound is not the premiere style for delivering multi-textured, fan friendly action, it is effective, especially when it’s Tito Ortiz is on top of you and ungloved elbows are legal.

I think there is a very good chance that Griffin, like Patrick Cote, will survive and lose a decision against “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” as opposed to succumbing inside the distance. Yes, I pick Ortiz to win. But one thing is for sure; Tito will not stand and trade. THAT would definitely jeopardize his chances.

Nick Diaz

Vs.

Sean Sherk

Nick Diaz, to me, is a fighter to the core. We all know he takes his craft very seriously, maybe too seriously at times. But I do not remember him ever given less than his all, even when he lost. And boy, he sure doesn’t get many easy fights. His itinerary over the past 2 years has included scraps with Diego Sanchez (decision loss), Drew Fickett (TKO win), Joe Riggs (decision loss), Karo Parisyan (split decision loss) and Robbie Lawler (KO win). Now he faces Sean Sherk, a wrestling power plug with a fairly educated left hook.

Sherk was left out in the cold from the UFC for almost 3 years after his decision loss to Matt Hughes. In his re-entry on November 19, 2005 (UFC 56) he represented himself well in losing to Georges St. Pierre. He gave the Canadian a hard time standing before Georges decided to take matters to the mat for the finish.

Diaz/Sherk is a difficult one to call because they both have strengths standing. Diaz is a southpaw with a very tricky, albeit wide, right hook. Sherk is the shorter fighter but has a compact, bursting punching style. There ground games are different on paper in that Sherk is great at takedowns but Nick has a very effective guard. I’ll have to toss a coin on this one.

Jeff Monson

Vs.

Marcio Cruz

This will be a grappling match as both are well anointed in that world. I predict “The Snowman”, Monson will get a decision over “Pe De Pano” in a slow paced contest.

David Terrell

Vs.

Scott Smith

A jiu-jitsu guy with a punch against a wrestler with a punch; hmm, I see this one being a ground battle, with a lot of punching (thank you, thank, hold your applause). If Smith, who is WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) light-heavyweight champion, can keep it upright he could make his UFC debut a memorable one (they don’t call him “Hands Of Steel” for nothing). If not, “The Soul Assassin” (Terrell) stands a very good chance of catching him with a choke or an armbar.

Karo Parisyan

Vs.

Nick Thompson

Karo cannot afford to lose this one. He’s always one step away from a title shot or one step away from being out of the UFC (it seems). Nick Thompson is a tough cookie who has racked up 8 straight wins since July 2005! But Parisyan has moved into the top ten with wins over Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle and Matt Serra. Karo should prevail here but Thompson may stretch him to a decision.

Jason Lambert

Vs.

Terry Martin

Jason Lambert will exploit Terry Martin’s strike oriented game by getting the fight on the ground and wailing away..

Thiago Alves

Vs.

Derrick Noble

There’s nothing like an undercard rematch to settle an old score. Derrick Noble submitted Thiago Alves in December 2003 with a rear naked choke. But Alves looked awful good last November when he TKO’d Ansar Chalangov. So the American Top Team slugger from Brazil has a shot here. Still I feel Noble may duplicate his past win.

Evan Tanner

Vs.

Justin Levens

Justin Levens, like Scott Smith, Nick Diaz and Jason Lambert (and many more), is another promising fighter from WEC. But I doubt that will be mentioned on TV. He may make a huge impression if former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner takes him lightly. I feel Tanner knows he needs this fight to remain relevant in the UFC. If Levens is smart he will use a lot of kicks and lateral movement.

UFC 59 PREVIEW: TITO VS FORREST

Many fans never thought the day would come when Tito Ortiz would fight again in the UFC octagon, but that very moment will happen when the Huntington Beach Bad Boy and possibly the most popular fighter in MMA history returns to face Ultimate Fighter season one champion, Forrest Griffin at UFC 59 from Anaheim, California.

For Tito Ortiz, the controversy surrounding his exit from the UFC and eventual return reads much like a soap opera. After his last fight, a split decision victory over Vitor Belfort in February 2005, Ortiz was out of contract from the UFC and after rumors circulated that he was demanding a much higher pay scale from his previous fights, the former light heavyweight champion was not re-signed and the war of words between Ortiz and UFC president Dana White began.

During the time before the first Ultimate Fight Night event, Tito Ortiz was set to sponsor Ivan Salaverry, who was competing in the main event, with his Punishment Athletics product placement as well as corner him during the fight. According to Ortiz and other published sources, UFC president Dana White basically ruled that no fighter in the UFC could be sponsored by Punishment Athletics and no fighter that wanted to compete in the octagon would be cornered or affiliated with Tito Ortiz.

Dana White took another step by removing Tito’s image and any affiliation he had with the company off of the UFC website, and basically refused to acknowledge his existence except for the highlight clips shown routinely of Ortiz being knocked out by Chuck Liddell or slammed by Randy Couture, two fights that Ortiz coincidentally lost.

In an interview with MMAWeekly in August 2005, Ortiz said of Dana White that “he’s a superstar because he’s been on the Ultimate Fighter, and he’s not a president man. He’s a celebrity now, and I think the power has gone to his head.” Ortiz also went on to compare White to a mob boss who holds personal grudges against people that he has issues with.

Tito went onto star in some supporting roles in a few movies, made an appearance in a music video and even flirted with the idea of starting his own MMA organization to get his name back out there. But in the end, good business and popularity ruled out, because Tito Ortiz re-signed with the UFC, even amongst the obvious dislike between he and Dana White, because both knew that the Huntington Beach Bad Boy returning could only be good for potential earnings for both parties.

While Ortiz may never admit that he needed the UFC, the fact is that for as well known as he is, the sport is growing at exponential rates and he wants to be a part of that. And Dana White will absolutely never admit that Tito Ortiz was the life blood of the organization when Zuffa took over the company and they leaned on his popularity at every corner, and probably still is the most well recognized fighter the UFC has ever produced.

Now, Tito Ortiz is firmly in place as a main event star for the UFC because not only is he taking center stage for the company’s first foray into MMA in the state of California but he is also featured as a coach on the flagship show, the Ultimate Fighter, and that can only raise his profile from where it is now.

While the focus for this event seems to be entrenched on Tito Ortiz, standing in the background just waiting for his shot at greatness is Ultimate Fighter season 1 winner and now UFC veteran, Forrest Griffin.

Forrest Griffin has quickly become one of the most popular and well liked fighters in all of the UFC. If one thing has shone true for all the fighters that have appeared on the Ultimate Fighter, its that personality will make or break you with the fans. While top fighters like Diego Sanchez continue to face constant ridicule for their actions on the show, others like Forrest Griffin have flourished from the portrayal that they received on television.

Griffin has had nothing but success since the end of the Ultimate Fighter reality show. He had a fight for the ages with former roommate Stephan Bonnar in the finale that drew millions of home viewers to tune in and see one of the best match-ups in UFC history take place. His first official fight was versus Bill Mahood at UFC 53 and Griffin quickly dispatched of the Canadian by choke in the first round. Griffin also managed to get a TKO win over Elvis Sinosic at UFC 55. The match-up with Ortiz will be by far the biggest and toughest fight of Forrest Griffin’s professional career.

For Tito Ortiz the gameplan should seem pretty easy…take Griffin down to the ground and pound him for three rounds, either picking up a win by decision or a TKO stoppage from damage on the ground. While Ortiz’s wrestling skills were exposed a bit in his fights with Couture and Liddell, many people discount the fact that one is a former Olympic level wrestler himself and the other has possibly the best takedown defense in the entire sport of mixed martial arts. Tito hasn’t had many problems working his takedowns against fighters with less wrestling experience and while we haven’t seen much of Griffin’s takedown defense, it’s a safe bet he won’t be able to avoid Tito’s shot if he goes for it.

On the ground the advantage goes to Ortiz, simply based on his solid wrestling background and while ground and pound is his specialty, Tito Ortiz is also a former competitor in Abu Dhabi submission wrestling and is not likely to be submitted in this fight. While Griffin is no slouch on the ground, it’s not his best bet to win if he allows Ortiz to take him to the mat and try to work him up against the cage to reign down punches and elbows.

Forrest Griffin has shown to have pretty good hands in all of his fights and after his display against Stephan Bonnar, it’s pretty obvious that he can take a ton of punishment and still come back for more. He has a good standing base, solid boxing and isn’t afraid to throw kicks if the shot is open, but he will have to watch his legs in this fight because he may get caught for a takedown if he isn’t quick enough.

On paper, all signs lead to a win for Tito Ortiz but there a lot of questions that still remain. Has Tito Ortiz maintained the type of form and skill that garnered him so many accolades when he was in the UFC previously and will the over 14 month layoff effect his performance? While this fight has a lot of marquis value, it also is a very dangerous fight for their reality show because Tito is currently a coach on the show and a loss could damage the show’s reputation. (None of the previous season’s coaches fought while the show was still in its first run on TV). Forrest Griffin is also a rising star in the company, but honestly has not faced this type of competition yet and this will be the truest test whether he is championship material or will be fighting Sam Hoger in a filler match on the next Ultimate Fight Night card.

Tito Ortiz will make his return to the UFC on Saturday night and we will all find out if the Huntington Beach Bad Boy is truly back when he takes on Forrest Griffin, live from the Pond in Anaheim, California at UFC 59.

Joachim Hansen:
Interview with one of the worlds top lightweights

Inside Scandinavia, where the cold is colder than in the rest of Europe, countries such as Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Norway are known such as the land of the Vikings. These men proved their bravery in the past centuries when they became feared by people around the World. Nowadays, they are still feared, but now in the proving grounds of MMA scene, when the Norway team FrontLine member and former SHOOTO welterweight champion, 'The Viking' Joachim Hansen is mentioned. Hansen became one of the most respected fighters in the world by his ALWAYS very-exciting performances into the ring, and his good mood out of it. Displaying calm after his brutal knock out victory in Bushido 10 over ChuteBoxer Luiz Azeredo at April 2nd. Hansen chatted to us about his thoughts and the happenings of 2006 in his career.

MaxFighting: Which was your strategy to face Luiz Azeredo in BUSHIDO 10?
Joachim Hansen: No special strategy, just keeping my guard up, the guy has a wild style.

MaxFighting: What did you think about him during the fight?
Joachim Hansen: I do not like that guy. I wanted to rip that cocky smile of his face.

MaxFighting: Did Azeredo offer you an eminent danger during the trade of blows on the feet?
Joachim Hansen: No, it did not hurt. He landed some hard punches and stomps when I was in the butt-scoot position.

MaxFighting: Did you think you were close to finishing the fight when you started the ground and pound?
Joachim Hansen: Yes, I think so, I saw that he was almost knocked out, but I could not finish it.

MaxFighting: Was you kick on his nose(which resulted the KO) a lucky strike? Can you describe that way that you finished the fight?
Joachim Hansen: I was going to kick him in the liver and he put his head down, that is what happened.

MaxFighting: What did you think about Marcus Aurelio vs. Takanori Gomi's fight?
Joachim Hansen: Aurelio was smart, and his game plan worked.

MaxFighting: Do you think Gomi's ground is his weakness?
Joachim Hansen: Yes, I believe so.

MaxFighting: What is the next for you in BUSHIDO?
Joachim Hansen: Too early to say, I just have to stay in shape and wait.

MaxFighting: Would you like to re-match Hayato Sakurai?
Joachim Hansen: Yes. I believe I can do better next time.

MaxFighting: Turning our conversation to SHOOTO, you fought a 8 seconds fight against Tatsuya Kawajiri and got disqualified by kick on the groin. How was your
frustration over that fight?
Joachim Hansen: Well. I was trying to do an inside low-kick and he stepped into it or something like that, pretty embarassing situation, it happen sometimes, I know. Kawajiri's balls are not good at all (I heard) and there is no bad feeling between us.

MaxFighting: That fight was your chance to re-capture the SHOOTO's welterteight belt (lost to Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro in '03). What were your
expectations over for fight against Kawajiri?
Joachim Hansen: I was hoping to take my belt back[laughs]… But instead I had to stand in the jackass corner.

MaxFighting: Any chance of you facing Kawajiri again still this year?
Joachim Hansen: I do not know for sure, but I hope so. And I will do my best to make a better performance.

MaxFighting: You fought SHOOTO for the first time in 2002 and last time was this fight against Kawajiri. How do you compare these situations? I meant SHOOTO is not big
like in the past?
Joachim Hansen: I have not really noticed, the first time was really cool against TAKUMI. This had been a dream for a long time to go to Japan and fight.

MaxFighting: I know team Scandinavia does not exist anymore, so which is your team now and main teammates?
Joachim Hansen: Here are some names they should look out for, Pål, Simion, Frank Lystad, Szymon Sinkevic, Ståle Nyang and Thomas Hytten. The new team is called Team Frontline. We are about 10 guys in the MMA group training and trying to develop new methods 'to slay' our enemies.

MaxFighting: What can you tell to the fans about what they can expect from your career in 2006?
Joachim Hansen: I hope I'll continue to do good, but you never know what the future brings, ill stay in shape and battle on.

MaxFighting: Thanks for your time, would you like to leave final message to the MaXfighting.com readers who appreciate you?
Joachim Hansen: Thank you and a big thank you to the MMA fans around the world. You all are the spine of MMA.

Scott “The Hands of Steel” Smith talks before UFC 59

At UFC 59, Scott Smith will step in against the very talented David Terrell in what will surely be a slugfest. Scott makes no promises about the outcome of the fight and gives his opponent a lot of respect. One thing he is most assuredly guaranteeing is that he has trained extremely hard for his bout against the guy who knocked out Matt Lindland in near record time. Smith has been training with WEC champion and friend of MaXfighting, Urijah Faber. Pair that up with working out with James Irvin, Jeremy Freetag, and a man named Munoz for pure wrestling and you have a volatile mix. He has been working hard on his jiu jitsu and takedown defense and working more on gaining better positions than getting the submission. Smith intends to keep this fight standing at all cost, because he is a knockout specialist and at 9-1 he has won all of them via TKO/KO except one by submission. That one was his very first fight. Scott’s one loss has been to longtime friend James Irvin by KO in 2004 and he attributes a lot of that top the fact that he was fighting at heavyweight. He feels Irvin deserves the credit in the world for that stoppage and they are now the best of friends and training partners.

Smith is now fighting at Middleweight and to prepare for this fight he has been driving to San Francisco to train 3 days a week. He is taking his UFC debut serious and plans to use all of his skill set to lock this up quickly. Scott wrestled in college and took 4th in the state in 1994 so he has the ground game he needs against the Cesar Gracie student, Terrell. When asked about the Ultimate Fighter reality show Smith said he was stepping on the plane to go meet with them and fate intervened. Tait Fletcher, who Scott Smith defeated back in October of 2005, was the replacement for his slot on the show. Scott also TKO’d Justin Levens in January, the man who is to face Evan Tanner at UFC 59. Scott says none of that matters because the only thing he is focused on right now is beating David Terrell and earning his place in the UFC.

Scott was gracious enough to talk to MaXfighting.com and here is what he had to say:

MF: The last time you fought was back in January I believe and you now have a fight scheduled with David Terrell at UFC 59. What do you feel gives you the advantage in this fight?

SS: Being the underdog has always been a huge advantage for me. I have nothing to lose, and this is almost a must-win for him. I also have fought three times since he has last fought and been able to improve on my mistakes both in training and in the cage.

MF: How excited are you to be in the UFC? Has this opened any doors for you?

SS: This is a dream come true for me, and once I get this first win is when doors will start opening for me.

MF: Because of your incredible success in MMA many lot of people put you in that elusive “next big thing” category. Do you feel any added pressure because of this?

SS: No, because I feel that I have not even shown what I am really made of.

MF: Some MMA fans don’t know who Scott Smith is. Can you tell them whom you train with regularly and a little about the way you like to fight?

SS: I train at a lot of different places. Faired Academy in San Francisco, Cassio Wrynecks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Worsham's Team X, me and the guys from CCFA stick together and go wherever we need to go to get a good workout.

MF: Scott, looking at the Ultimate Fighter casting it is obvious that you could have easily been on that show. You defeated Tait Fletcher who is a light heavyweight booked to be on the reality show and Justin Levens who is about to face Evan Tanner at UFC 59. Did you feel the urge to tryout or is that something you tried to avoid? Did anyone contact you about it?

SS: I was contacted about the show and gave it some serious thought, but it just was not for me. I am a single dad with two kids and the thought of being away from them for six weeks with no contact would not work. I know its just six weeks but it is hard enough keeping our family together, and that is something I was not willing to risk. I figure that if I am good enough to be an ultimate fighter, I will get there one way or another.

MF: Is there something coming down the pipe this year for you that you are really looking forward to?

SS: This fight with Terrell is all that’s on my mind right now. This should be a huge year for me!

MF: Someone you would like to fight before anyone else?

SS: Not at all. I know that from here on out that it won’t be easy.

MF: What would you change about MMA fighting rules if anything?

SS: Nothing

MF: Do you think there needs to be more competition in the United States for the UFC?

SS: No.

MF: Do you have any MMA role models? Someone that really inspired you to step up your game?

SS: YES! Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz.

Scott, do you have anything to say to your fans?

SS: MMA has the best fans in the world! All of my family and friends in Elk Grove have been behind me from day one...so thanks! It really does mean a lot!

I would like to thank Full Contact Fighter, Fairtex, MG sports supplements, Smith Steel and my manager "Tire Barn" Mike. All the people I train with, this has been a team effort! I have to thank my girl Katie bug for supporting me 100% and always helping me with my kids at practice. My kids have also been great through all my training, and I am proud to say they are my biggest fans!

UFC TO RETURN TO NEVADA IN JUNE

With the UFC set to make its California debut this weekend for UFC 59 in Anaheim and then head down the road a few miles to Los Angeles for UFC 60 in May, it would appear that maybe perhaps the UFC is forsaking Nevada for California?

Not so if the official Nevada State Athletic Commission schedule has anything to say about it.

After UFC 60 on May 27th, the company is set to return to Las Vegas in a big way in June with no less than three, yes three, events proposed to take place at the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino for Spike TV.

Already set and approved is June 24th, but recently the UFC petitioned to have June 18th and 28th also added to the docket. How that most likely breaks down is two Ultimate Fight Night shows and the Season 3 Finale of The Ultimate Fighter.

That would then segue into the company’s Nevada PPV return on July 8th for UFC 61 at the Mandalay Bay Resort/Casino. This event is most likely going to be headlined by Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz’s rematch as set up by TUF 3.

With July’s event approved by the NSAC, the UFC has gone ahead and also petitioned August 26th for the Mandalay Bay as the possible date/site for UFC 62.

With both Chuck Liddell and Rich Franklin presently recovering from surgery, odds are one or both could be part of August’s card and defend their titles should everything go well with their rehab.

Currently no Spike TV events have been petitioned between July and August, but most likely if fallowing the UFC’s recent history, there will most likely be at least one added between the two Mandalay Bay shows.

Regardless of what shows receive approval, this is shaping up to not only be the UFC’s busiest year ever, but possibly the busiest year overall in MMA history

THE HEAT RETURNS AT UFC 59

2005 was supposed to be a breakthrough year for Karo “The Heat” Parisyan. He had returned to the UFC and had put himself on a three fight winning streak which was to culminate in a Welterweight Championship match against Matt Hughes in November.

It seemed as if Parisyan was flying high, then injury and personal hardships turned what was a promising year into a setback. Now after 10 months away from the fight game Karo returns to face off against Nick Thompson at UFC 59 this weekend in California.

Prior to suffering his injury Parisyan had been one the welterweight division’s hottest commodities. He had been on a four-fight winning streak that had seen him defeat the likes of Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle, and Matt Serra.

Prior to the winning streak, Parisyan had only three fights in his previous 13 bouts. Two of which were to Sean Sherk, the other to current number one ranked contender Georges St. Pierre.

Karo’s Judo background had served him well and his game had continued to grow each time he fought. It seemed every time out he showcased new skills, whether it was his willingness to trade with Diaz or his ground ‘n pound against Lytle.

To complement his fighting skills, Parisyan showcased a natural charisma that made him an easy sell to fans and sponsors. He was young, talented, and things looked like they were finally in place for him to take the next big step after he defeated Matt Serra at UFC 53.

What fallowed could only be described as a string of bad luck and upheaval. Parisyan left his longtime school and mentors Gene LeBell and Gokor Chivichyan. Illness struck his family and then just weeks out from his title shot he would suffer an injury in training.

Karo would have to sit back and watch Joe Riggs get the title shot that Parisyan had worked so hard to earn. To add salt to the wound Riggs would not make weight and the bout was turned into a non-title affair that saw Joe submitted by Hughes in just over three minutes.

Months have since passed and finally healthy and with some stable ground under his feet Parisyan prepares to make his return to action and take the all important first step towards regaining his contender status and getting his long awaited title shot.

At UFC 59 Parisyan will be taking Nick Thompson, a one time student of a man Karo beat at UFC 44 in Dave Strasser.

Both Karo and Thompson have shown they are willing to stand and bang. Parisyan has an advantage in his takedowns with his extensive Judo background, but both he and Nick are solid submission fighters, so this fight could very well come down to conditioning.

Karo has been able fight hard for three rounds as he’s shown going the distance in his last five fights, but the question remains to how well conditioned he’ll be after missing time to rehab from injury. Thompson on the other hand fought an astounding 15 times last year, but this is his first fight in 2006, so how will his body react to having over three months off?

If Parisyan can win this fight he will place himself one step closer to regaining his lost title shot. However with Georges St. Pierre locked into number one ranking and virtually guaranteed a fight with Matt Hughes in September, it could be a while before Karo sees his.

A loss would be only Parisyan’s second in the UFC compared to four wins over solid competition. While that is enough to keep him with the company, losing would place him back in an ever overflowing division that might not yield another title shot for well over a year.

Regardless of outcome it’s the fact that Karo Parisyan has battled through injury and change to get back onto the biggest stage in MMA. He’s faced his first setback in his career and now he’s ready to shine again and as Parisyan himself says, don’t blink, because he intends to bring The Heat.

PRIDE'S LATEST PLANS FOR SHOW IN U.S.A.

Pride's website this week talked with Nobuyuki Sakakibara about Pride coming to the United States and whether the California State Athletic Commission would allow the use of a ring or not.

MMAWeekly asked Sakakibara if Pride would consider holding an event in the United States with a cage since a cage is the only way you could hold an MMA event in California if the California doesn't approve the ring this month?

Sakakibara said sternly, "We won't use a cage." "There has been some speculation about the use of a ring and there was talk that it would be approved at an earlier stage. We want to apply so that we will be able to use the ring. Even if the ring is permitted, say with 4 ropes, that would still be different than the PRIDE ring. I hope that the PRIDE ring, with 5 ropes, will be approved as soon as possible."

So if California did adopt a ring format, (which is currently being negotiated with the California State Athletic Commission) look for Pride to put a show on in Los Angeles.

Sakakibara said quote "I'd like to put together an event in Dodger Stadium that would amaze the American fans. I hope that American fans will work so that we will be able to put on PRIDE events in America. Please support PRIDE too, not just the UFC."

ST.PIERRE TO MAKE A MILLION THIS YEAR

TORONTO (CP) - Georges St. Pierre is on his way to becoming Canada's first million-dollar mixed martial arts fighter.

On Friday the charismatic 170-pounder from Montreal was granted a second shot at UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes.

There is no date yet for the title fight, but the St. Pierre camp expects it in early September. Las Vegas is the likely site.

Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White made the championship bout announcement Friday in a taped message during a Toronto appearance by the Montreal fighter and lightweights Mark Hominick and Sam Stout, who train out of London, Ont.

The title bout adds to St. Pierre's status in the sport - and his bank account.

"He's making serious money," said Stephane Patry, St. Pierre's manager and president of the Montreal-based TKO promotions company.

"(In 2005) he made close to $350,000. And if everything goes as planned, this year he's going to make close to a million. He's making a lot of money with his fights, and also a lot of money with his endorsements.

"It's safe to say he's going to be a millionaire."

St. Pierre, 24, is already one of the UFC's most popular fighters. He has a chiselled body and Hollywood good looks - think a young Jean-Claude Van Damme, albeit with a telltale hint of wrestler's ear - with explosive weapons in the ring.

Fans love him. After taking down veteran Sean Sherk in UFC 56: Full Force in November 2005, St. Pierre got down on his knees in the Octagon and begged for another title shot.

He has celebrated victories in the ring by doing a backflip, breakdancing and pretending to strap on a championship belt.

Hughes, a hard-nosed champion with a penchant for playing head games, is the only blemish on the St. Pierre record, defeating the Canadian in UFC 50: The War of 04 in October 2004 in Atlantic City, N.J., in a bout for the vacant 170-pound title.

St. Pierre started well against Hughes in that fight, getting his attention with a spinning side kick to the gut. But St. Pierre went for a kimura hold late in the round and Hughes reversed it, catching him in an armbar. It was either tap out or have your arm broken. St. Hughes submitted with one second remaining in the first round.

The Canadian, known as Rush or GSP, says Hughes did not see the real St. Pierre that night.

"I will prove to everybody I'm better than him," a smiling St. Pierre said Friday.

His manager was even more confident.

"Georges will beat him for sure," Patry said. "You can bet your house, your car, anything you have. Georges will win that fight."

While Patry is obviously biased, he is also a canny judge of talent. At UFC 58: USA vs. Canada in March, he correctly called an upset win by Hominick, a 5-1 underdog against veteran Yves Edwards.

St. Pierre raised his MMA record to 12-1-0 when he scored a split decision over former champion B.J. Penn in UFC 58 in Las Vegas. St. Pierre agreed to that fight, only if a title shot came with the contract.

But while he won the promise of a chance at the championship, St. Pierre knew he may have to wait. That changed Friday.

"To hear it from the (UFC) president is very exciting," he said.

St. Pierre showed his heart against Penn, who had the best of the early going and quickly began work on altering his opponent's good looks. But a bloodied St. Pierre rode out the storm and then began to impose his will on the Hawaiian, taking him down repeatedly.

St. Pierre sees his comeback against Penn as the answer to critics who said he was "mentally weak."

Still, the Canadian paid a price for the Penn win, leaving the ring with his shaved head pebbled with welts and abrasions and his nose swollen. The good news was nothing was broken.

He took a week off in Mexico after the fight - "I swam with dolphins" - and then resumed training.

Penn is a common foe for St. Pierre and Hughes.

Hughes, whose record is 40-4-0, lost his welterweight title to Penn in UFC 46: Supernatural in January 2004. He won it back after Penn was stripped of the championship belt in a dispute with the UFC.

Hughes, 32, is slated to meet UFC legend Royce Gracie in UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie in a non-title fight on May 27 in Los Angeles.

The champion is no stranger to fighting Canadians. He stopped Toronto's Carlos Newton in both UFC 34: High Voltage in November 2001 (when he won the title for the first time) and UFC 38: Brawl at the Hall in July 2002.

CAN THIS MAN BEAT KARO?
The Goat Gets Ready To Turn Up the Heat

Nick Thompson takes on Karo Parysian at UFC 59 and has a few words for some other fighters as well.

When Nick Thompson steps into the octagon on Saturday night it will be his second foray into the UFC, and his competition is the returning Karo “The Heat” Parysian, and while they differ in UFC experience, Thompson is actually the bigger veteran coming into the fight. One of the most active fighters at 170lbs, Thompson will look to impress as he steps up for possibly the biggest fight of his professional career. Thompson, who is never afraid to speak his mind, talks with MMAWeekly about his upcoming fight with Karo Parysian, his thoughts on an internet fueled feud with Joe Riggs and yet more thoughts about his favorite fighter, Diego Sanchez.

MMAWeekly: What kind of training are you focusing on for this fight? Who are you training with to get you ready?

Nick Thompson: I am just training all around MMA. People focus on Karo’s judo but Karo is slick everywhere. Everyone at this level is. I am aware of his throws but I can’t focus on that because then I will be missing something else. I am training at Minnesota Martial Arts Academy with Sean Sherk and Brock Larson. They are both studs so if I can get to a point where I can hang with them I will be okay.

MMAWeekly: Did you ever have any interest in entering the Ultimate Fighter competition? Many of those fighters have gained the kind of fame and monetary compensation that I'm sure you'd enjoy, so is there any tension to get in there with those guys and show why you're a better fighter?

Nick Thompson: Yeah, I was actually flown out as a back-up for last season. When they were unsure whether Gurgel could compete because of his knee, I was at the hotel ready to be brought in. It didn’t happen and I got called into the UFC a couple of months later. Right after taking the UFC 56 fight, The Ultimate Fighter called me and asked if I wanted to be on season 3. I had already signed with the UFC so I couldn’t do it. As far as wanting to show you are better than the TUF guys. At first it is hard to see them getting so much attention because you feel like you have worked harder than them and gotten less in return. In the end though, the guys who turn out being successful from the show, are guys who would have made it anyways. I realized that when I saw Leben KO Rivera and Diego beat Diaz.

MMAWeekly: You were having quite of war of words on the internet with Joe Riggs before his fight with Nick Diaz. Do you still have a desire to fight him and how did that all start?

Nick Thompson: We met at UFC 56 when he was getting ready for Hughes. He said that he heard I had turned down a fight with him. I was begging the UFC to let me in and would have fought Tim Sylvia if it got me in, so there was no way I turned down a fight with Riggs. I told him as much and that was all that was said between he and I. Nothing else, he seemed like a real prick but there was no

animosity between us. Then I get home and see that he’s written that I am a bum and that he’s making fun of the whitey tighties I was wearing in the sauna. Granted, the whitey tighties were nasty, but I was more concerned with making weight than what was covering the fellas. Perhaps Joe should have done the same. As far as wanting to fight him, sure. He is plenty tough but I think I can hold my own just fine with him.

MMAWeekly: Josh Neer just defeated Joe Stevenson at Ultimate Fight Night and you beat him late last year. If the UFC approached you with that fight, would you consider a rematch?

Nick Thompson: I really like Josh and had a blast fighting him. He is a tough guy and will not quit. For Christ’s sake, Stevenson popped his ACL and Neer didn’t even blink. You got to like that. As far as fighting him again, would I get to fight him while he has the torn ACL? Cause then yes. For those of you who have not seen the fights go to http://youtube.com/watch?v=1TgpjblHGJc and check it out. Good times

MMAWeekly: Another guy you've been none too silent to speak out against was Diego Sanchez. If you win this fight is he the guy you'd like to fight next if given the opportunity?

Nick Thompson: Diego kind of made me eat crow after the Diaz fight. Diaz is tough and Diego took it to him. I would still love to fight him and think that he is in trouble against 170lbers that can stop takedowns. But he is tough. On a side note, his toughness does not mean that he is not a tool. He still is a tool. You know, with the mustache and man perm thing. Or the commercial talking about how is family is what makes him fight well. All I am saying is that he eats corn on the cob the long way.

MMAWeekly: This will be Karo Parysian's first fight back after his pectoral injury and after he lost his shot at Matt Hughes for the welterweight title. Do you think he'll be out to prove that he's back by really beating you down or do you think that it plays into your hand that he's been out for a while and may be looking past you a bit thinking of a future title shot?

Nick Thompson: I don’t think Karo is looking past me. Karo is a competitor and he is training to win on April 15th. I don’t know if the time off will play a factor but I hope so. I will need every advantage I can get as Karo is one of the top 170lbers in the world.

MMAWeekly: What kind of danger does Karo Parysian bring into this fight for you?

Nick Thompson: His submission skills are slick. That’s obviously my biggest worry. But there are other things that Karo does that really plays into my hands. Karo likes to be exciting and likes to throw down. If he stands and trades with me, I like my chances.

MMAWeekly: This will be the UFC's first show in California, and your fight will most likely end up on the main card. Does that add any extra pressure onto you to perform? Do you still get nervous before fights?

Nick Thompson: I want my fight to be shown. I am going to be nervous anyways, might as well be somewhat famous. As far as how nervous will I be? I am always nervous. I throw up before about half of my fights and always tell my corner men I am never fighting again. Maybe it’s the going out in the spandex thing. You feel awfully naked.

MMAWeekly: A good friend of yours, Sean Sherk, is fighting on the same card versus Nick Diaz. How have you added onto his game and what do you think will happen in that fight?

Nick Thompson: Diaz is in trouble. Sherk does the best of what Diego did and doesn’t make the mistakes Diego does. I really like Diaz and don’t understand why the UFC would do this to him. Why not just have him fight Arlovski and get it over with?

MMAWeekly: Anyone you want to thank for training or sponsors?

Nick Thompson: I would like to thank my sponsors. That’s how I get my bread. American Fighter, XO Energy Drink, TapouT, mmafa.tv, Steve Gavin and Precision Mortgage, Miccs Martial Arts, AirandAqua.com, Philty Phil Kuehnl, Dr.Jonathan Main, Johnny Passarelli, Fight Shop, CalSp and Gemdiamonds.com. I’d also like to thank my training partners at Minnesota Martial Arts Academy. Sean Sherk. Actually, screw him. I am sick of him always beating on me. I would like to rescind my thank you. Anyways, Brock Larson and my instructors Nat McIntyre and Greg Nelson. I would also like to thank my old teammates at Dave Strasser’s Freestyle Academy including Ron Faircloth, Nick Agallar and Brian Geraghty. Lastly I want to thank my manager for stealing 10% of my green and my lovely, lovely girlfriend. Seriously, she is way better looking than me. The key is to find a hot girl with a vision problem and make sure she doesn’t get glasses.

Schilt Prepares For Las Vegas K-1 Debut

Reigning K-1 World Grand Prix champion, Semmy Schilt (36-15-2 (17 KO's), will make his highly-anticipated fighting debut in The United States during a K-1 “Mayhem at Mirage II” Superfight with heralded Japanese champion Musashi (43-21-5 (1 No Contest) (12 KO’s) at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Mirage Hotel and Casino on Saturday, April 29th.

The featured bout will serve as a rematch to their April 21, 2002 meeting when Schilt, in his K-1 debut, earned a judges’ decision over Musashi. “I have grown a lot as a fighter since then,” said the 32-year-old Schilt, who stands at an enormous 6 feet 11 inches. “Semmy Schilt is training like a mad man, like always. I fight because I like to fight and, as always, will be in top shape.”

On November 19th, Schilt, before 58,000 plus fans at Japan’s Tokyo Dome, dethroned K-1’s previous reigning champion, Remy Bonjasky, during the semifinal round of the “World Grand Prix Finals” tournament.

After scoring a stunning upset knockout on Bonjasky in the first round of their meeting, the Dutchman dealt another tournament champion in Glaube Feitosa a worse fate when he put Feitosa down for the 10 count with a hard left knee strike only 48 seconds into the tournament’s championship round bout.

A member of Team Golden Glory for the last six years, Schilt brings to his team training sessions a set of skills unique to the Holland-based fight squad: the principals and techniques of Seido Kaikan Karate. “Any fans who like my traditional way of training and the karate and budo spirit, will see me improve each fight,” said the big man, a student of various forms of Karate since the tender age of eight.

Musashi is a four-time victor of the annual, eight-man K-1 Grand Prix tournament in Japan and a two-time “World Grand Prix Finals” runner-up. Last April, Las Vegas fight fans saw the 33-year-old Seido Kaikan Karate stylist defeat six-time world kickboxing champion, Rick “The Jet” Roufus, by way of unanimous judges’ decision during a featured Superfight on K-1’s “Battle at Bellagio IV” card.

Overall, 2005 was one of Musashi’s strongest years as a K-1 competitor as he earned decisions over former world boxing champion, Francois “The White Buffalo” Botha, and Ruslan Karaev, the victor of last August’s “Mayhem At Mirage” tournament, on September 23rd and November 19th, respectively.

The K-1 “Mayhem At Mirage II” card will also be highlighted by a Superfight showdown between 2005’s two Las Vegas K-1 tournament winners, Feitosa (63-15-1 (59 KO’s) and Karaev (159-8 (125 KOs) as well as the return of Stefan Leko (24-12 (14 KO’s), who will face American Dewey “The Black Kobra” Cooper (42-8-2 (26 KO’s) in the tournament’s quarterfinal round. The quarterfinal round of the tournament will also feature a grudge rematch between 2003 K-1 USA tournament champion, Carter Williams (37-12 (24 KO’s), and Japan’s Yusuke Fujimoto (18-10 (9 KO’s).

Tickets for “Mayhem At Mirage II” are officially on sale and can be purchased both online on K-1 USA’s official website, www.k-1usa.net or at the Mirage Hotel and Casino box office (800-963-9634). Tickets are priced at $50, $100, $200, and $300, respectively.

The Mirage Grand Ballroom doors will open for the event at 5 PM Pacific Standard Time on April 29th. The first preliminary bout will begin at 5:30 PM and the tournament will commence at approximately 7 PM.

K-1 is a martial arts fighting sport that derives its name from its inclusion of a wide array of combat disciplines, including Karate, Kung-Fu, and Kickboxing (“K”), and its intent to determine one champion in one ring (“1”). After being staged for the first time in Japan in 1993 under the direction of founder Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, it later evolved into the country’s most popular sport and achieved popular culture status there as its athletes turned into larger-than-life celebrities.

Pre-Fight Interview Johil de Oliveira

When we meet a veteran MMA fighter to make an interview, we have the certain that stories of the old days of MMA that he had participation in will be shared with us by his words. However when a fighter who already fought in Pride, IVC and in extinguished Extreme Fighting, and is recognized like a Luta-Livre legend is the fighter caught for an interview, the words shared can be a little different. The former BUDOKAN Luta-Livre Team Johil de Oliveira wants to forget some of his past fights and to make a kind of rebirth in this opportunity of packing the card of Juiz-de-Fora Fight 3. Taking an unknow opponent(Leonardo Souza) in his front, Johil wants to restart in his career from this point to a new and good future. This 37 year old with soul of a novice fighter is ready for his upcoming match.

MF: You are going to face an unknow fighter in Leonardo Souza. How is your motivation for this fight?
Johil de Oliveira: It does not matter for me if Souza is zero MMA resume or 40-0 fighter. I am with high motivation for this fight because I am finally -after
6 years- going to fight without any injury. I felt myself very-well on the training and I am ready to make a good performance.

MF: This is your first fight without the BUDOKAN banner "behind" you. What did it represent to you?
Johil de Oliveira: I have my own banner now this is Team Johil. I can tell to you that I have a professional background from specialists in my preparation for the fights. I have BJJ fighters training with me, and when I was from BUDOKAN I did not have it because I had rivalry to BJJ´s people. I do not have it anymore and I am glad of having this guys around me. But my roots are Luta-Livre and I hold this flag until the death.

MF: You are a 37 years old fighter, you fought a lot of times in several MMA associations. So how do you see the MMA development nowadays?
Johil de Oliveira: Foremost I do not feel myself old, my soul is still young and while I feel myself like that I will keep fighting. I tell you that I liked the old ValeTudo rules, headbutts, elbows and no gloves were my land. However it is not good for the sport on TV and since these things were banned from MMA, it grew a lot.

MF: You fought in UVF, WVC, IVC, Extreme Challenge, Pride and Cage Rage. But now you are fighting in Brazilian MMA Associations which are developing themselves such as Rio MMA Challenger and the own Juiz-de-Fora Fight. Is this a step back in your career?
Johil de Oliveira: I do not think so. I lost my 7 last fights, this would be impossible to keep myself internationally with this bad resume. I do not think that the event I fought in Brazil and thet I will are bad, we need to have the same spotlights that other events have to. So these events can be considered good too.

MF: Are you a lightweight fighter now?
Johil de Oliveira: I am facing Souza in 77kgs division, but I prefer to fight in 75kgs division. I was always a welterweight or lightweight fighter, I do not know how to title the 75kgs category.

MF: But you already fought Mark Weir and many other in 80kgs or up. Right?
Johil de Oliveira: The fights were until 80kgs, but while I weighed 77kgs, my opponents had exactly 80kgs and then in the day of the fight they were with 5kgs or more over me. I heard Weir got 90kgs when we fought each other.

MF: How did Weir get it?
Johil de Oliveira: I do not know.

MF: In that fight against Weir at Cage Rage 8-Knights of the Octagon you almost heel-hooked him.
What did miss to you submit him?
Johil de Oliveira: His extra weight over me was an excess, so anything missed(lol).

MF: Will this fight at Juiz-de-Fora Fight 3 be the Johil´s rebirth?
Johil de Oliveira: I hope so. But do not think you all that due to the lack of experience of Souza, this fight will be easy for me. We already watched fighters with championships or undefeated resumes being schooled by novices. I am prepared for him!

MF: What can you promisse for the readers of this interview for this your up&coming match(tomorrow) at Juiz-de-Fora Fight 3?
Johil de Oliveira: I want to fight well and use this fight such as the first step for new winds into my career. I promise a lot of will-power because I want to return to the events that I already fought in my own weight class the under -75kgs. I have a new team, so I have new deals in my career.

MAHALO!

PUNISHMENT IN PARADISE
DEEPIEST APOLOGIES!!

Let me first start of by saying THANK YOU for all the Teams & Fans that came out to support P.I.P. I’m very sorry about the seating and the complications with the ring. We had a cancellation due to overbooking due to the date change. So we were just left with the bleachers. As far as the ring due to rain their was a ground shift which I was prepared for and I will take full responsibility for it.

I learned a lot from this and hope I didn’t lose your support as I will strive to make P.I.P to what we all expect of it. Again I’m really sorry and I’m very disappointed in what happened and PROMISE it won’t happen again.

BUSHIDO WELTERWEIGHT GP ANNOUNCED

Today in Japan, Pride DSE announced that the Bushido series would begin round one of the Welterweight GP on June 4th. Round two would follow on August 26th, and that the Finals would take place on November 5th.

The fighters that have been confirmed to fight in round one are Ryo Chonan, Akihiro Gono, and Makoto Takimoto. Possible participants mentioned where Dan Henderson, Murilo Bustamante, Dennis Kang, Phil Baroni, and Paulo Filho. Ikuhisa Minowa of course was not mentioned due to his participation in the Open Weight GP.

It will be interesting to see whether Dan Henderson, 2005 Welterweight GP champion, will participate or not since he said to the press last week in Japan that he wanted to fight in the Open Weight GP and not the Welterweight GP. Pride President Sakakibara even mentioned after Bushido 10 event that Pride was considering on possibly allowing Henderson to fight in the Open Weight GP.

When MMAWeekly asked Henderson why he wants to fight in the Open Weight GP over the Welterweight GP he said, "I don't know, some probably say stupidity(smile)...It's just a bigger challenge and a bigger prize at the end of the line."

You can see that video interview with Dan Henderson from last week in the Behind The Scenes section of MMAWeekly TV.
