Paulão does physiotherapy to be back

Paulão Filho is doing daily sessions of physiotherapy to fell better after the surgery he suffered on his left knee, on last November 23rd. The Judo and BJJ black belt believed that in about three weeks he would be back training. “I was already walking three days after the surgery and I believe that in about two or three weeks I will be back”, said the BTT athlete, who will spend the Christmas at home with his family. “I will spend the Christmas Eve relaxed. This is a family party, so I spend this time with my family. I don’t use to control myself for eating, I always eat a lot after the fights and at parties period (laughs)”, said Paulão with a good mood.

Minotauro likes Roger Gracie debut

Under his weekly article, called “Under the ring with Minotauro”, published on last Friday (December 8th) at Jornal dos Sports (a Brazilian sportive newspaper), the BTT black belt Rodrigo Minotauro said that he really liked the debut of more one member of Gracie family at MMA. “I already watched Roger fighting with gi some times, he is clever and good, and I think he chooses the right time to debut and he has a brilliant future”, said Minota.

Minotauro also talked really well about other members of Gracie family. The black belt remembered the importance of Master Hélio Gracie for the development of BJJ and MMA. “… the MMA market has a good level now and a lot of athletes are realized with money and job and this is all thanks to master Hélio and Gracie family”.

The BTT black belt also commented who was the person who made he gets interested by the BJJ and by MMA. “I started to like MMA after watching the first editions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, when Royce Gracie, who had 70kg, submitted fighters much heavier and stronger than him. So I started to be a fan of Royce style and I decided to learn the BJJ”, finished the athlete.

Assuério and Jacaré wins at Jungle

The Brazilian fighters Assuério Silva and Ronaldo Jacaré were the great names of Jungle Fight Europe. Also with Vítor Miranda, who did the most beautiful KO of the night; both did special performances for the 5 thousand people who did watch the event at the Stadium Dvorana Tivoli Arena on last Sunday in Slovene.

In the main bout of the night, Jacaré didn’t give chances to Renzo Gracie’s pupil. After taking the fighter from down and pass the guard getting the kata-gatame, Jaca answered the blow defense attacking his opponent back who did lose with the same blow.

Assuério didn’t have so many facilities to defeat Mirko Cro Cop’s pupil, Igor Pokrajac. Even being 9kg lighter than the Brazilian fighter, Igor was really well applying a knock down with a right punch. So the Brazilian did continue the bout searching the clinch and taking his opponent down during the second and the third rounds, when he got his back and punished violently the Croatian fighter. Cro Cop was at Igor corner and complained a lot about neck blows, but the referee Marco Vinícius de Lucia kept himself calm and didn’t interrupt the bout, that finished with the Brazilian victory by split decision.

If his favorite pupil didn’t win, Cro Cop got happy at least because of his former-sparring Vitor Miranda victory, who did use his favorite blow (head kick) to get the most beautiful KO of the night under the world Kung Fu champion Dany Marold. Mirko was the great star of the night, the local audience did scream his name and he did stay until the end of the event and did get up the ring to give the prize to Jacaré.

Leonardo Peçanha didn’t win, but he did fight really well during the first two rounds against the pupil of Ricardo Cavalcante, Steven Cantwell. But in the third round he had his super eyelash opened after a cross punch, making the referee to interrupt the bout. “Actually my category is until 77kg, but I had this opportunity to fight under the category until 93kg, so I decided to do it and that was great, I think the audience really liked that”, said the favorite of Wallid Ismail.

Sílvio Behring’s pupil, Danilo Rodaki, who was training for one month with Cro Cop in , also surprised the Brazilian audience, but he recouped himself. After starting in disadvantage against the big Klemen Fister, Danilo did follow the instructions of Master Henrique Machado, taking his back and submitting the giant athlete. In the category until 93kg, Rodrigo Riscado wasn’t luck facing the French athlete Antony Rea. Rodrigo wasn’t able to take his opponent down and did suffer some blows and even trying hard the referee did stop the combat.

Still happy about the huge audience, Wallid did close the night with a gold key: “God is really good to me. Who would say that a black man from Amazon would be great in as a fighter and would take the Europe and the world as a producer?”, said the fighter from Amazon glad about the success of more one edition.

Check out now the photo gallery of the event!!!

UFC'S BRANDON VERA CONSIDERING HIS FUTURE

Brandon Vera, who is widely regarded as the number one contender for a title shot in the UFC's heavyweight division, was in attendance at the press conference that was held by new MMA promotion Elite Xtreme Combat and Showtime Networks on Thursday in Hollywood, California.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Vera met with Elite XC president and longtime boxing promoter Gary Shaw on Thursday. Vera told the press that he has one fight remaining on his UFC contract, and that he wants his next contract to be with "whoever wants to take care of me the best."

When asked about competition among MMA promotions in an interview with the Orange County Register, Vera said, "How long have McDonald's and Burger King been around? Yeah, hell yeah, competition is definitely good. It helps the fighters in more ways than one. It helps us get paid better. You know, we can ask for more money, we can ask for more promotional stuff. By having competition out there, it's good for everybody, I believe... [it's good for] the companies because it creates more awareness of MMA, and [it's good for] the fighters because it gives us leverage a little bit... a little bit (laughs). It doesn't give us a lot of leverage, but it gives us some."

The undefeated Vera is 4-0 in his UFC campaign, with victories over Fabiano Scherner, Justin Eilers, Assureio Silva, and Frank Mir. In his most recent fight, Vera scored an impressive TKO victory over Mir at UFC 65 last month. Vera was paid $40,000 for the fight ($20,000 for fighting and an additional $20,000 for winning).

Vera was expected to get the next shot at the title of UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia, but Zuffa has a logical policy in place of not giving title shots to fighters who are not under multi-fight contracts, so Vera is not going to get a title shot unless he signs a multi-fight contract extension.

If Vera does sign an extension, then he is still very likely to be the next fighter to challenge for the UFC Heavyweight Title, assuming that the UFC is also successful in extending Sylvia's contract. If Sylvia signs a multi-fight contract extension and Vera doesn't, the next logical challenger for the title among the UFC's current crop of heavyweights would be the winner of the UFC 66 fight between Andrei Arlovski and Marcio "Pe de Pano" Cruz, although Sylvia and Arlovski have already fought each other three times.

The Los Angeles Times also quoted Vera's manager, Mark Dion, as saying, "If UFC wants to keep all of its fighters in house, they can, but it's people like [Elite XC], who have money and a platform like Showtime, who will compete for fighters now. This is the first time UFC is not the monopoly."

Zuffa president Dana White seemed to dismiss the talk of Vera signing with Elite XC when he said in the same Los Angeles Times article, "I've never lost a big star in my six years here."

White also said regarding Elite XC's promoters, "A couple other organizations, who had more talent, with guys who knew more, have already tried to do what these guys are, and they've failed. These guys don't know the difference between MMA and thumb wrestling."

BROCK LARSON TALKS UFC FIGHT NIGHT WIN

It’s hard to imagine someone being 20-1, having fought in the UFC, and still be under the radar, but that’s what seems to be happening in the case of welterweight Brock Larson.

Despite solid performances each time out, showcasing his excellent grappling skills, Larson remains something of a mystery to the mainstream MMA community, but that could soon be changing.

After a year that saw him go 7-0, finishing all but one opponent, and continued growth as a complete fighter, Brock seems to be on the cusp of a breakout year in 2007 as he looks to take on all comers and prove to everyone that he belongs right up with some of the most recognizable names in the division.

This past Wednesday, Larson capped his year by defeating Keita Nakamura at UFC Fight Night in San Diego, California. While he’s happy he got the win, Larson feels he could have done better.

“The fight went good,” said Brock. “I didn’t quite perform as well as I could have, of course. I got a little gassed and whatnot, but I did what I wanted to do. I wanted to control the fight and take him down and control him wherever I wanted to put him and I did that. I struggled at times, but at the end I got him where I wanted him.”

Larson feels that a combination of a hectic few months and taking the fight on short notice could have contributed to a performance he feels can be improved upon, but regardless circumstances, he takes full responsibility for his output in the octagon.

“We had a lot of going on with everything, Thanksgiving, family stuff, and then the school that I train at flooded…so there’s lots of things that went down,” explained Brock. “I couldn’t train the way I wanted to, with other priorities going on and stuff, but again, that’s no excuse. I took the fight knowing all the things were on board and I did what was dealt to me and I just played it out.”

Larson continued, “I hate to blame anything, but I think it [taking the fight on short notice] might had a little bit to do with it. I took the fight so it’s my fault – my responsibility – to get in shape. Cutting thirty pounds in two-and-a-half weeks was quite a bit, but I should have been able to handle him a bit better than I did, so it might have had something to do with it.”

Overall, Brock feels pleased with how things have gone for him in 2006, but as is always the case with hungry fighters, he feels there’s more work to be done.

Larson exclaimed, “I’ve got great teammates and I train hard. I’m happy where I’m at, but there’s always room for improvement. I think I’m going to give it a B+ for where I’m at right now.”

“I’ve been working a lot on my stand-up, my punching. My grappling is where it’s at. It’s pretty good, and so I’m going to take a little time off that and work on my hands a little bit more, my footwork, and my timing. I want to get better with my hands so I can throw a couple punches and hurt people on my feet because basically it makes everything easier,” added Brock.

After having worked his way through the regional fight circuits, Larson hopes that the coming year will yield bigger and better things such as a return to the UFC and matches against name opponents, such as those who were on Wednesday’s card with him.

“I’d like to get another UFC fight in and get another win, of course,” commented Brock. “I want to fight some guys, whoever they throw at me, and see how I do, basically. I think if I can cut weight and do everything right, I’m strong enough, quick enough, and just as talented as a lot of people in the 170-pound division. I know there’s a few guys are above me at a level, but for the most part I think I’m right with the majority of 170-pounders.”

Larson further said, “I think I’m pretty good against anyone out there such as a Shonie Carter. Joe Riggs would be an interesting match for me as well. I think I’m about there, about at a Riggs level, so I think any of those guys would be a great fight for me. [I’ll fight] anyone that people respect and know, a name, so I can let guys know I’m right there with them, win or lose.”

If given the opportunity to take on better known opposition, next year could very well be the year that Brock himself becomes a name fighter.

As always however, regardless of status in the community, Larson is thankful to those who’ve helped and supported him and wants to let fans know that it’s only going to get better from here on out.

“I like to thank my sponsors, Warrior Wear, American Fighter and Felon Fight Wear,” concluded Brock. “I’d like to thank David Camarillo at the AKA…my school in Braynard, the Koumei Dojo…and the Universal Martial Arts Academy, Sean Sherk and all those guys out there. Thanks to all the Braynard fans, and fans in general, that have supported me this year. Hopefully we’re going to have big things in store next year, so keep an eye out and we’ll turn some heads.”

Pederneiras evaluates Shaolin victory

The leader of Nova União team André Pederneiras watched from his pupil Vitor Shaolin corner the victory of the Brazilian under the Japanese Daisuke Nakamura, at Cage Rage disputed on last Saturday (9), in England.

- Shaolin showed that he is really tough and got a much better level. He is better exchanging punches and is really well at his wrestling, much well trained – said Pederneiras, who was already ready for the Sakuraba’s kimura as like Shaolin. “We already knew that it was the main blow of the Japanese fighter, but Shaolin was able to wait the right time to be out of the position and hurts Nakamura’s arm”, said Dedé.

Even after the Japanese fighter and the audience claims, Dedé confirmed that the replay at the big screen after the referee’s interruption did finish the doubts of the audience and even the doubts of the Japanese. “His arm got hurt and his elbow was out of its place, but he just saw that after watching the replay”, said Dedé, who confirmed that his pupil Vitor Shaolin comes back to on next Monday (18) at night.

CONTRACTUAL QUESTIONS SURROUND SHAMROCK VS. GRACIE

A mere three days ago, the newly formed partnership between Showtime Networks Inc. and Elite Xtreme Combat announced that Frank Shamrock and Renzo Gracie would be the headlining bout of their debut event on February 10th. But before the principals involved even left Hollywood, the location of the announcement, the fight was mired in controversy.

The controversy stems from Shamrock’s current contract with the California-based Strikeforce promotion and his signing with EliteXC. Strikeforce official Mike Afromowitz told MMAWeekly, “Frank has a contract with us that very clearly states that his next fight is to be for us. By signing to fight elsewhere before fulfilling that fight, he is not honoring that contract.”

On December 8th at the most recent Strikeforce event, Shamrock took to the ring to announce his next fight for the promotion, which is scheduled to be a headlining bout against Phil Baroni.

It was the second time that Shamrock announced the fight, which was originally scheduled to take place at the Strikeforce show on December 8th. Shamrock vs. Baroni has now been scheduled for sometime in April, to take place in San Jose, California, where Shamrock currently resides and has a large following. Strikeforce officials are planning a large marketing push and pay-per-view surrounding the event.

Shamrock fighting for another promotion in such close proximity to the Strikeforce date could jeopardize the Strikeforce production. An injury resulting from the Gracie fight could preclude his participation in the Baroni fight and would most likely damage the attendance and pay-per-view purchases for the event.

When questioned at the EliteXC press conference on Thursday, Shamrock stated to several members of the media that he was allowed to take the fight. His exact words at the press conference were, "I have a business relationship that allows that to happen." (Shamrock did not respond to several attempts by MMAWeekly for comment.)

Strikeforce told MMAWeekly that they notified an EliteXC representative of Shamrock’s contract with Strikeforce prior to his signing with EliteXC, and that Strikeforece has “sent correspondence to Gary Shaw and Douglas DeLuca [both members of EliteXC’s management team] and Showtime officially notifying them that there is a problem.”

The executive producer of the SHOWTIME telecasts is David Dinkins, Jr. with eight-time Emmy Award-winner John Faratzis directing and World Wrestling icon Bill Goldberg serving as color analyst.

In a groundbreaking move for MMA, EliteXC will stream the non-televised undercard fights live online at EliteXC.com.

EliteXC takes pride in its leadership position in the MMA sports world. Professional athletes will compete in EliteXC events that offer world-class entertainment with innovative staging, first-class production value and non-stop action that elevate mixed martial arts fighting to a new level.

SHAMROCK vs. GRACIE TWO OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN MMA TO SQUARE OFF FEBRUARY 10 IN FIRST-EVER EliteXC EVENT

Frank Shamrock is regarded by many to be the first true mixed martial artist in combat sports. Renzo Gracie is a prominent member of the most famous family in martial arts. Now, these two legends will square off in the first-ever EliteXC event, to be televised live on SHOWTIME, February 10 at 10 p.m. ET/PT (tape delayed on the West Coast).

Shamrock vs. Gracie will make history as they usher in the next generation of mixed martial arts with EliteXC and MMA airs live for the first time on premium television.

But to Shamrock and Gracie, these are not principal motivations. They have family matters to settle.

The Shamrock-Gracie family duel dates back to 1994 when Royce Gracie, Renzo’s cousin, defeated Shamrock’s brother Ken. One year later, Royce and Ken fought to a draw in the rematch.

Eleven years later, in March 2006, Frank Shamrock knocked out Cesar Gracie, another of Renzo’s cousins, in the first round.

Now, Renzo has a chance to clear his family name with a definitive win over Shamrock on February 10.

“This is one of the biggest fights you could ask for,” said former world wrestler and global superstar Bill Goldberg, who will serve as color analyst on the SHOWTIME telecasts. “I think having these two legends go at it for the inaugural event is huge. Shamrock and Gracie put this sport on the map. Now they are going to put EliteXC on the map. I can’t wait for February 10th.”

Shamrock, 34, of Santa Jose, Calif., has been looking for the right opportunity to make a noteworthy comeback in the sport. The five-time defending middleweight champion semi-retired from competition after defeating Tito Ortiz by submission in 1999 and has returned for just three fights since including the Gracie KO.

“I am as passionate as ever about being in the cage,” said Shamrock. “In 1999, I began pursuing a career in Hollywood and had some great success. Now, having the chance to finally settle the score with the Gracie family, I can’t think of a better way to make a big comeback.”

Shamrock was the first fighter to successfully incorporate wrestling, jiu-jitsu and kickboxing into one fluid art form. His style of blending the best techniques from multiple disciplines revolutionized the sport and has made him one of the preeminent combatants ever to enter the cage.

In his 13-year career, Shamrock has a record of 21 wins, seven losses and one draw and has not lost a fight since a split decision loss to John Lober in 1997. He feels a bout against Renzo Gracie, and with EliteXC on SHOWTIME, is the ideal opportunity to cement his legacy as one of the world’s best middleweights.

“I am the complete package,” said Shamrock. “I can strike with anyone, I have excellent submission skills and come February 10, another Gracie is going to feel my wrath.”

Gracie, who was recently featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes, is representing the first family of MMA. The Gracies introduced the world to Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the outset of the MMA phenomenon. Renzo is known to pundits for his fierce determination, competitiveness and pride. Coupled with his nature as a family man, Renzo is one of the most well-liked and popular fighters today.

With a record of 11 wins, six losses and one draw, the 39-year old from New York, by way of Rio de Janeiro, has been waiting for his shot at Shamrock for a long time.

"Frank always says he's the best in the world and talks bad about everyone, not just my family. I would love to shut him up,” said Gracie. "I met up with him in Japan a while back and he couldn't look me in the eye. I found out later that he was talking trash about me in an interview.”

Although there are no belts on the line, the stakes are high for Shamrock-Gracie. The Brazilian is fighting to restore his family name while Shamrock is looking to prove that his conglomerate style is the best fighting technique in the world.

“It will be interesting to see Gracie, with his penchant for jiu-jitsu and grappling against the true mixed style of Frank Shamrock,” Goldberg said. “There’s no question that the Gracies are among the best grapplers in the world, but as good a striker as Shamrock is, he is equally talented on the ground.”

EliteXC is a newly-formed Mixed Martial Arts venture led by CEO Doug DeLuca and President of Live Events Gary Shaw, the legendary fight promoter. EliteXC is backed by LA-based Pro-Elite Inc.

SHOWTIME On-Air Team

Following a career in the National Football League, Goldberg became one of World Wrestling Entertainment’s most popular global stars. In addition to starring on screen in “The Longest Yard” with Adam Sandler, the multi-talented entertainer has experience behind the microphone, serving as guest analyst for various MMA pay-per-view events in recent years.

The executive producer of the telecast will be David Dinkins, Jr. who serves the same capacity for SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

Eight-time Emmy Award winning director John Faratzis will call the shots from the television truck. Faratzis will add EliteXC to a long list of notable directorial credits including three Super Bowls and five Olympic Games.

Dana White confirms Rampage signing, UFC on HBO soon

UFC President Dana White confirmed Tuesday night during the UFC Fight Night weigh-ins that the UFC has purchased the WFA (World Fighting Alliance) and the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) organizations.

"We bought the WFA for the contracts," said Dana White.

The fighters included in the deal are Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, "Razor" Rob McCullough, Ivan Salaverry, Urijah Faber, and Heath Herring.

White put an end to the speculation that the WEC will be used as a feeder organization for the UFC. The WEC will be a separate entity and a rival to the UFC.

"We're going to take that to a whole another level. Put it on television and blow it up. Pretty soon the WEC will be number 2," White said.

White dispelled talks of the WEC being televised on HBO as a way to compete against Pro Elite. Instead, the UFC will be televised on HBO in the near future.

White commented on his new rival's deal with Showtime: "Showtime's got nothin'. I don't see the Showtime thing lasting too long. They don't know what they're doing, but I wish them well."

Other notes:

The Ultimate Fighter 4 winners will get their title shots February 3rd 2007. Matt Serra will look to take the UFC welterweight belt away from Georges St. Pierre, and Travis Lutter will battle Anderson Silva for the middleweight belt.

Matt Hughes will get his rematch with Georges St. Pierre on April 7th 2007 in Montreal.

FRANK TRIGG, THE RENAISSANCE MAN
by Al Yu

The life of Frank Trigg is a busy one. As a broadcaster for Pride Fighting Championships and a professional fighter, the UFC veteran came out of retirement and claimed the
ICON Sport Middleweight crown with a TKO victory over Jason “Mayhem” Miller. The former co-host of MMAWeekly’s SoundOff Radio returned to speak about his recent win and what to expect of Pride in the near future.

So how does it feel to be a champion?

“Like any other fight. Here’s the thing, everyone makes a big deal about championships and belts; to me, it’s not about the titles, it’s about the competition,” said Trigg. “I love competing. It was a great fight and I had a good time fighting against Jason [Miller].”

If he wants a rematch, I’ll give him a rematch after a couple more fights,” added Frank. “You’re never going to have a boring match when you fight Jason Miller. No matter how boring of a fighter you are, Jason is going to make you exciting.”

In three of his appearances in the UFC, Trigg succumbed to rear naked chokes. Those losses revealed his susceptibility to the submission. Against Jason Miller, Frank successfully defended his rear naked choke attempts. The former UFC title contender revealed how he was able to overcome his opponent.

“I didn’t panic. When Matt [Hughes] and Georges St. Pierre mounted me, I started to panic,” commented the UFC veteran. “I stayed as calm as possible. When you panic, it’s a waste of energy.”

Now that Trigg has made a successful comeback, will we see “Twinkle Toes” in competition more often? The new ICON Sport Middleweight Champion spoke about his future as a fighter.

“It’s based around my schedule. I’m really a broadcaster that fights. Before, I was a fighter who ran his mouth. My broadcast schedule is first; Pride takes precedence over everything. I still train hard but the reality of it is my future will be in broadcasting when I’m retired from fighting.”

There has been much speculation regarding Pride’s financial problems of late. Rumors of the company’s sale recently surface on some media outlets and has been the topic of many discussions. As an employee and a voice of Pride, Frank addressed the rumors.

“Let me put it to this way, at 9 o’clock this morning I got a pay raise. Let’s put that to rest.” explained Trigg. “Two major organizations offered to buy Pride and both got denied. They offered a very legitimate fair price for Pride; a very substantial offer…Mr. Sakakibara does not want to sell Pride. Pride is not up for sale. Period.”

Recently, Pride Fighting Championships commentator Mauro Ranallo announced his resignation from the company. Although Pride has yet to name his successor, Trigg vaguely confirmed that a replacement would be named soon. “I’m pretty sure I know who it’s going to be,” said Frank. “I can’t tell you.” When asked if it was someone that the fans already knew, Trigg eluded, “Maybe. Maybe he’s tall, maybe he’s short. He could be famous, but he could be infamous.”

Wanderlei Silva is Pride’s current 205-pound Champion. The Chute Boxe fighter has held his title for the last five years. “He’s supposed to fight on New Year’s Eve but I’m not sure that’s still going to happen because he wants to be prepared for his title fight in February. [However] Wanderlei also likes to fight,” stated the Pride commentator.

So who will Silva’s opponent be at the February Pride show in Las Vegas?

“Let me tell you what, once I’m allowed to tell the answer, you guys are going to s*** yourselves,” stated Trigg boldly. “It’s going to be a great fight; it will be an epic battle. It will be worth the price of flying from the east coast to Las Vegas just to watch that one fight and go home.”

“Right now is the best time to be an MMA fan.”

Maurício Shogun: Who the Pride wants
By Bernardo Seabra

About two weeks before the Pride of New Years Eve, the fighter and black belt from Chute Boxe, Mauricio Shogun tells what he expects of his fight at the Shockwave 2006 against the Judo fighter Kazuhiro Nakamura. The athlete also talks about his plans for next year and says that will fight against anyone that the Pride organization chooses, answering about Paulão Filho teasing. “He likes to promote himself under the Chute Boxe team, so I won’t talk much about him because it is his marketing”. Check out now the complete interview:

You will face Nakamura at the Pride New Years Eve; he was already KO’d by Wanderlei at Pride GP in 2005. How do you think will be this bout? Did Wanderlei give you some advice?

He is a tough fighter. He is a great fighter. I will do my best, do my Muay Thai game and my best BJJ game to try to win this bout. But I didn’t talk to Wanderlei about Nakamura yet.

Did you get surprise about Nakamura? Did you want some other adversary?

I didn’t get surprise, I was just waiting my adversary. He is a tough fighter and I face who the Pride organization chooses.

Arona said that the bout with Wanderlei was just for the belt. Who do you think should face Wanderlei, Arona or Minotouro?

If has anyone that can face Wanderlei, this is Minotouro. Arona already had his chance and he lost… but who must decide that is the Pride.

Don’t you think that both of them, who already lost for you, must face you before?

Yeah, I did win both. So I don’t know if they need to face me before. I don’t think so actually. But I will face anyone that the Pride organization chooses for me.

Paulão said that could defeat you. Would you face Paulão? How would be the bout against him?

I would fight him easily. But the Pride organization must decide it either. He is good on the ground, is a tough fighter but I won’t talk much about him because he promotes himself under the Chute Boxe team, so this is all about marketing.

What about 2007, do you want to fight the GP to be two times championed or you want to change the category?

I will fight the GP. I already talked to the Pride organization and I will keep my category.

By Lance Pugmire, Times Staff Writer

Emerging as a potential challenger to Ultimate Fighting Championship, Elite Xtreme Combat, a new mixed martial arts organization — Showtime television contract in hand — was introduced Thursday.

Elite XC arrived on the scene the same week UFC announced its purchase of a second-tier mixed martial arts circuit known as World Fighting Alliance.

And in announcing the main event of its first card, Elite XC said that Frank Shamrock, who was UFC's first middleweight champion, would fight veteran Renzo Gracie on Feb. 10 in Southaven, Miss.

"I won't interfere with a contract, but we've been contacted by other fighters and I do want to work with other fighters," said Elite XC President Gary Shaw, a veteran boxing promoter. "If they're coming out of contracts, we'll talk."

Shaw had one of those conversations Thursday when unbeaten UFC heavyweight Brandon Vera (8-0) attended the Elite XC news conference at Hollywood's Roosevelt Hotel, and said he had only one fight remaining on his UFC contract.

"Whoever wants to take care of me the best," Vera, 29, said when asked what organization he would continue fighting with.

Said Vera's manager, Mark Dion, "If UFC wants to keep all of its fighters in house, they can, but it's people like [Elite XC], who have money and a platform like Showtime, who will compete for fighters now. This is the first time UFC is not the monopoly."

Shaw announced that Elite XC and Showtime had struck a three-year deal to televise at least six cards in 2007, eight in 2008, and 10 in 2009, with two pay-per-view cards scheduled for next year. Elite XC fighters will battle in a chain-linked, circular ring known as "the cage," Shaw said, a twist on UFC's octagon.

"There are plenty of kids out there who haven't had a sufficient opportunity to fight who they want to in UFC," Shaw said. "I don't care how big [UFC is], they can only handle so many fighters. You can't keep 50 stars happy. I think it'll be hard for them to retain every athlete."

Elite XC Chief Executive Doug DeLuca said he envisioned an MMA future that would allow fighters in his organization to have bouts against UFC opponents, but UFC President Dana White dismissed the new organization.

"No one in that business has a clue how to do MMA," said White, whose organization is anticipating a $4-million live gate for its Dec. 30 title fight pitting light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell against Tito Ortiz in Las Vegas. "I've never lost a big star in my six years here. A couple other organizations, who had more talent, with guys who knew more, have already tried to do what these guys are, and they've failed. These guys don't know the difference between MMA and thumb wrestling."

White said UFC was in negotiation with HBO to have some of its cards televised "very soon."

HBO Sports President Ross Greenberg said, "We have been tracking and talking with the UFC for a long time, but beyond that I really can't say much."

Shamrock, 34, defeated Ortiz in 1999 and then relinquished his title by retiring from the UFC, ripping his former organization.

"The problem is that the top five guys in UFC make all the money, and the rest make scraps." Shamrock said.

Shaw said Elite XC had fewer than 10 fighters under contract, including a woman, Gina Carano, and K.J. Noons, a fighter whom Shaw will promote in boxing as well as MMA.

He predicted, "Some big names will sign with us, but we'll also establish our own fighters."

Showtime's broadcasters will be former pro wrestler Bill Goldberg and actor Mario Lopez.

Times staff writer Larry Stewart contributed to this report.

'CABBAGE' MUGGED IN LONDON

Wes "Cabbage" Correira

The European media reports that the reason Wes 'Cabbage' Correira was not able to participate on last night's Cage Rage 19 card in London, England, was because he was mugged by two men and sustained a concussion.

According to reports, Cabbage was not able to sleep due to the time difference with Hawaii and went looking for a drink at 6:00 A.M. in the morning. He was supposedly attacked, sustained a concussion, and woke up to find his wallet missing.

ALMOST 16 MILLION VIEWERS SEE MIXED MARTIAL ARTS SEGMENT FEATURING IFL COACHES PAT MILETICH AND RENZO GRACIE ON "60 MINUTES"
Show finishes in the top-five for the week for the first time in 2006

NEW YORK, December 14, 2006 - Two of the International Fight League’s (OTC.BB: IFLI) legendary coaches, Renzo Gracie, world Jiu-Jitsu champion and coach of the IFL’s New York-based Pitbulls team, and Pat Miletich, coach of the IFL’s Moline, Illinois-based Silverbacks team, were prominently featured in Scott Pelley’s report on the growth of Mixed Martial Arts on "60 Minutes" on Sunday, December 10, on CBS. The show earned a top-five ratings finish for the week. The show also finished first in its time period in households, viewers and adults 25-54.

Among the key Nielsen Media Research figures released were:

For the first time this season, "60 Minutes" finished as one of the five most-watched programs for the week" on Sunday.
The program "finished the week at number three in households (10.5/17) and number four in viewers (15.83m)."
"60 Minutes" had been in the top 10 four times this season, but in the top five just once.
The "60 Minutes" page on Yahoo.com received more votes and message posts for the MMA piece than any other "60 Minutes" sports story listed, including pieces on Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and the New York Yankees.

Pelley trained with both Gracie and Miletich, and the "60 Minutes" cameras were on site when their teams met at The MARK in Moline, Illinois, on September 23, the same night Gracie took on Miletich in the main event Superfight. The piece also featured UFC champion Matt Hughes, his career and his relationship with Miletich.

The IFL, the world’s first team-based professional mixed martial arts league, will hold the finals of its "World Team Championship" tournament on Friday, December 29, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Miletich’s Silverbacks will take on Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland’s Wolfpack, while Gracie will battle world champion and coach of the IFL’s Toronto-based Dragons, Carlos Newton, in one of a series of additional Superfights.

The first full 11-date, 12-team IFL season will begin at the ORACLE Arena in Oakland, California on Friday, January 19, 2007. The slate includes events in eight different states and kicks off with the Nevada-based Lions (coached by legend Ken Shamrock) facing the San Jose-based Razorclaws (coached by his brother, world champion Frank Shamrock) in Oakland. The Seattle-based Tigersharks (coached by world kickboxing champion Maurice Smith) take on the Southern California-based Condors (coached by world champion Marco Ruas) to round out the team matchups in the opener, with a to-be-announced Superfight included as well.

SUBMISSION GRAPPLING RECOGNIZED BY FILA

FILA president Raph Martinetti announced that FILA, which is the world governing body for wrestling, now recognizes submission grappling as one of its officially recognized forms of wrestling.

According to Martinetti, a committee led by ADCC founder Sheikh Tahnoon, and composed of other big names, among them Renzo Gracie, will be in charge of organizing FILA-recognized submission grappling competitions and championships. They will work closely with the traditional submission grappling national affiliates that are already in place in many countries, such as in Brazil and the US.

According to experts in the submission grappling world, this is the first step in trying to build up submission grappling to the point it can one day become included in the Olympics as an official sport, such as wrestling and judo.

The crowd was as I expected being that I am a former Marine myself. Before anyone e-mails me yes I know it's, "once a Marine always a Marine". And a model one I was and I can appreciate the joy that the UFC is bringing to these guys who are awaiting orders at anytime to be placed in harm's way. OOH-RAH!

Marcus Davis vs. Shonie Carter

Marcus just looks HUGE compared to Carter. They clinch and it is obvious who the crowd is for as they chant Shonie's name as he is a former Marine himself. Marcus lands some knees and then gets the takedown getting the mount and then getting Carter's back. Mr. International fights out of a rear naked choke attempt by the Irish Hand Grenade in spite of Marcus's tight body triangle. Shonie manages to get in to his guard and land a few elbows as the round ends.

In the 2nd round, Davis rocks Shonie badly and Shonie remains hurt for the remainder of the round almost. Marcus just punishes Shonie until Carter drops Davis with a nice leg kick. Still, it was all Davis.

The 3rd round saw Shonie actively seeking leg kicks on Marcus. Davis continued to land punch after punch and Shonie vainly tried to land head kicks in return.

The judges scored the fight (30-26) (29-28) (30-27) for the winner by unanimous decision: Marcus Davis

Drew Fickett vs. Karo Parisyan

Round 1 and Fickett looks good striking in the opening minutes. Karo throws some big, looping right hands and gets a groin kick for his troubles. He takes a moment to regain his composure and they are at it again. Karo gets a takedown, but Drew is right back up. Karo starts landing some big right hands and Drew is eating them like they were his lunch. The round ends with Fickett avoiding some takedowns.

Round 2 kicks off fast and furious like with the two fighters both sporting cuts from the intense striking. The fight is stopped for a moment as Karo is ground and pounding Fickett because Drew cuts him from the bottom with an elbow. The cut is bad, but is under the eye so they are allowed to continue. Fickett gets up from the takedown and then scores one of his own.

Round 3 is all Karo as he throws Fickett down and continues to get the better of the stand up. After the fight they kissed each other on the cheek and hugged.....I am not making that up.

All three judges score the fight (30-27) for the winner: Karo Parisyan

Josh Koscheck vs. Jeff Joslin

Round 1 sees Joslin getting the better of the stand up, but Kos quickly proves why he is one of the best wrestlers in the country with a beautiful shot in and takedown. They both nullify each other's ground game and the referee stands them back up. Koscheck takes Joslin down again after being rocked by a stiff right hand. Josh takes him down to end the round.

Round 2 and Joslin owning the striking game so Josh does what he does best and takes him down. Josh lands a few strikes from the guard, but they are stood back up after the action stales. Kos takes Jeff down and Joslin has a triangle in the final seconds to finish out the round.

In the 3rd round, Joslin looks to land something big and tries a spinning backfist. Josh takes Jeff down and he is neutralized again by Jeff's butterfly guard. Koscheck gets a guillotine and cannot hold on to it as Joslin scrambles to get up. They are stood up again and the round ends with a Koscheck takedown.

All three judges score the fight 30-27 for the winner: Josh Koscheck.

Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Riggs

I thought Diego looked a little softer than normal, but still looked intense as ever. It's 30 seconds before the first punch is thrown, but it happens and round 1 is officially underway. Diego's first takedown attempt is stuffed and Riggs lands a few punches in exchange. Then, in an equal exchange, Diego explodes with a hook and sends Joe reeling like something out of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out for the NES. As Riggs gets up, Sanchez rushes in and lands a flying knee that puts Riggs's lights out. He follows up with punches until the referee has to stop it.

Winner by knockout: Diego Sanchez.

The fights were decent. The Karo vs. Fickett fight was insane and very entertaining. The troops remained motivated and enthusiastic throughout the entire fight. Diego proved once again that he belongs in the UFC and that he deserves a title shot very soon.

It was a good night for the UFC and I look forward to the next one in January.

Cro Cop to the UFC

MaxFighting has recieved inside information that it is a done deal and that Mirko Filipovic has signed with the UFC. They said that nothing was final, but that it was apparent that he has strong intentions on leaving the PRIDE organization to come to the United States. Filipovic is known for his devestating knockouts and his intensity in the ring. Many fans have wanted to see how Tim Sylvia would do against the respected heavyweight division in PRIDE and it appears that they will get their chance after all.

One match-up that I would love to see is Andrei Arlovski vs. Cro Cop. That won't happen for a while because the UFC has to introduce him to the American fans as they did Anderson Silva. It won't take long for them to see that he is at the top of the fighting food chain.

MaxFighting will keep you up to date as more becomes available.

Renzo Gracie vs. Frank Shamrock confirmed
Two great stars of the worldwide fight scene face off in February

Yet another great MMA classic has been put on the calendar: Renzo Gracie and Frank Shamrock will face each other in the event "Show Time", scheduled for the 10th of February, in Tennessee, USA.

Lately, things have been exciting for the Gracie. After his victory over Pat Miletich in the IFL, in September, Renzo spent two months preparing his cousin Roger for his victory on the 2nd, against Ron Waterman, at Bodog
Fight. On the 29th of this month, he will fight in the IFL's main event, against Carlos Newton, in Connecticut. And, if that is not enough, he signed an agreement to face Shamrock, one of the greatest champions in the history of the UFC.

Displeased with the current owners of the UFC, Shamrock has not stepped into the octagon since 1999, when he defeated Tito Ortiz in an epic battle. Since then, the San Jose local had three official fights, one in 2000, another in 2003, and his latest victory was over Renzo's cousin, Cesar, in March of this year. Currently, the fighter is, as is his adversary, one of the coaches at the IFL -- he trains the Razor Claws.

The Pitbulls' coach is seeing his popularity soar. Last Sunday, Renzo was the main character of the piece on MMA shown by the respected television journal 60 Minutes on CBS. In the report, the Jiu-Jitsu instructor defends fighting, in the broad sense of the word, as one of human beings' greatest characteristics, and says that a technical fight involves such technique that it "makes a Russian ballet seem uncoordinated."

The program shown by CBS can be viewed by clicking here.

NASTULA: 'PRIDE ALLOWS DOPING'

The Japanese media reports that former Olympic Judo gold medalist Pawel Nastula and his attorney issued a formal reply today to recent steroid allegations presented by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, suggesting that an over-the-counter supplement Nastula had been taking could have been contaminated with the illegal substance or one of its derivatives.

In a signed declaration obtained by The Fight Network, Nastula also stated that his written contract with DSE/PRIDE allows for the use of doping.

Nastula tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone, as well as the non-approved stimulants pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanoalmine following his PRIDE 32 fight against former steroid user Josh Barnett on October 21st in Las Vegas.

Paulo Filho

Operated knee

The BTT black belt Paulão Filho last week did a knee surgery, because of an injury he suffered during the semifinals of the GP Welterweight of Pride Bushido. While he was waiting the doctor to suffer the surgery, Paulão Filho talked exclusively to site TATAME, where he talked about his surgery, how he got the contusion, who he would like to face and all about the polemic interview of Wanderlei Silva to site TATAME, where the athlete from Chute Boxe said that Paulão was a chick. “… Next year I want to be in the category 93kg and if Wanderlei is really a man, I would like to punch his face”, said him. Check out the complete interview now:

You passed through a hard moment, with your surgery and with your dad situation. How was passing through all these in just a few days?

Well, actually what concerns me today is my dad’s situation. My surgery is something normal, this is fighter life, I will stay one month stopped and what is really annoying me is my dad’s situation. This is the fourth time he had a stroke and he can’t do a serious surgery because has some kidney problems so the doctors prefers to take care of his kidney firstly. His lucky is that the most part of his heart problems are in the same artery. Life is life and the rest is the rest.

About your knee, do you think the injury happened at the fight time?

No, that was the consequence of something that has been happening for a long time. After four tough bouts during this year, after much training, my knee wasn’t so good. I have been suffering some small injuries in my knee. Unfortunately it left me in my most important moment.

Are you sad about not having fought after knowing that the pain wasn’t because of something so serious?

I was in a critical situation… I had headache, my legs were sore, but if I knew that it was not so serious I would had fight. I was scared about my knee at the bout time and I though that if I had fight it could be worst right now and I would have to be more time without fighting. That was the big fact.

What do you have to say about the gossips about you did close with Kang to split some money…

The ATT is a different team from BTT, there is nothing to do. And it is impossible to happen something like that inside a professional event like these one. Who thinks that is someone who just thinks about money, about fame and has a really bad mind. It is such a shame thinks something like that.

When do you think to fight again?

I thought that my recoupe time would take me not so long, I thought that would be like 15 days, but Minotauro said to me that with him was like about one month. I did want to fight on December 31st, but I think I can’t do it.

Who would you like to face? Dan Henderson?

Actually it would be a great fight, because I never faced him. That would be a good fight to watch, he is one of the toughest ones of the category. But next yeat I want to be at the category 93kg and if Wanderlei is really a man, I would like to punch his face.

In your last interview you said that you would like to fight Shogun. Did you change your mind after he said that you were a chick?

I didn’t forget when Shogun’s brother (Ninja) said that he wanted to face me. And it was already done. Shogun said that I would be the next one and it still didn’t happen. But we respect each other, we talk to each other when we meet. But Wanderlei has no respect. Talk and think that I would let my belt and a good money to be a chick….this is absurd! If I was really a chick I wouldn’t being fighting MMA, I would be doing something else.

You said some things when you were really upset about punching him on the street and it had some polemic... Don’t you think that this fight would be much more interested under the ring?

He started to say that I had to wait in the line and postponed it…. And I really have to respect him. After that KO he suffered to Cro Cop… That was one of the most beautiful KO’s that I ever watched, nobody is able to do that. He hides himself into an image and he likes to choose his own bouts… And I think that things are not very good to him right now. I don’t know if this fight will really happen, but if not, no problem. If he really wants to try I am here.

People have been saying that Arona will fight Shogun. What do you think about this bout?

Fighting is fighting. Shogun had his moment at that occasion, but Ricardo didn’t have any condition of do that bout. But he still punched his head really hard and it wasn’t good to him. Who knows Shogun, knows that he is really good but that he wouldn’t be able to do what he did with Arona in a normal situation. Shogun has no conditions to submit Arona, only by a fatality. Arona is toughest, quickest, has a better ground game, in my opinion. We must wait and see what happens, but I think Ricardo can let this.

Do you think the DSE will put this bout in the end of the year?

I think that they will probably put Wanderlei. This bout didn’t finish yet, Wanderlei just won because of the audience. If you watch this fight, you can see that Wanderley couldn’t punch and do knee blows but Arona did exactly what he wanted to. He did take him down, controlled the situation and didn’t get punched. You must know to defend yourself doing the guard. This is MMA, so the result wasn’t very clear to me.

Who do you think that nowadays has some condition to win the number one of the heavy athletes, Emilianenko Fedor?

Fedor is an athlete that makes the difference, he knows how to face each athlete and he has a good health and velocity. He is the toughest guy under his weight, he did evaluate a lot under the Boxing game, and he has a heavy ground and pound. The best way to win him is using a good BJJ game, make him get tired. I think that Minotauro is able to do that. Training for the right way, getting focus at the ground training. I think that doing that he has no difficulties to win Fedor, he just need to do the BJJ. And Mirko also has conditions, he can defend himself really well and he is great on the ground. They are both great athletes that are able to do a good result under Fedor if they have a good training.

Who would you say is the best one in under the category 83kg?

Murilo, Jucão… Jucão is really tough, Danilo Índio either… Pamplona, Fabio Negão, Gabriel Gladiador, Demian Maia, Cacareco...

What about Vítor Belfort? What do you think he needs to do to be again a great fighter?

He must be more focus during the fight. He must understand it. The pressure that the fighter suffers is unique, we can’t split that with anything else. Not even with the media and with the personal life. He is not focus, he must treat himself, do a mind treatment and understands what he have to do. He is able to win anyone and if he has a good mind. I have no doubt about his fighting potential. But if his physiological part is not good, the person can’t do 100% that he is able to.

Thiago Silva
By Eduardo Ferreira

Number one until 93kg in Brazil

With eight victories in his career, seven of them by KO and one by submission, Thiago Silva (Macaco/ Chute Boxe) confirmed that he is the biggest name of in the category until 93kg winning the GP until 93kg of Fury FC. The BJJ brown belt won at the same night as Cláudio Godoy (BTT) in the semifinal by TKO and Vítor Viana (Brasa) by desistence in the final. “I faced the Fury FC as the most important event of my life until now. The event had a super production, they treated the athletes really well and there had many thought athletes in the GP. I didn’t expect to win like that, but I was well trained. I though that I could put up until the end in both bouts, but I was well prepared to get these results”, said Thiago Silva in exclusive interview to site TATAME. Check out now the complete conversation:

How did you start fighting MMA?

I am BJJ brown belt, I used to train with Robinho. I always liked MMA, but I used to live in a small city so I didn’t have opportunities, so I decided to move to São Paulo and I went to Macaco academy. I was well received and three weeks later I was already fighting MMA. I am really thankful to Macaco, I don’t have any words to this.

When was your debut?

That was at Predador FC against Rubens Macula. I won by KO. I am fighting MMA for one year and three months. I have eight victories, seven of them by KO and one by submission.

How did you face the Fury?

I faced this event as the most important one of my life. The event had a super production, they treated really well all the athletes and there had many tough fighters in the GP.

Did you expect to win like this, with two TKO in just one night?

I didn’t expect, but I was well trained. I though that I could put up until the end of both bouts, but I was well prepared so I got these results.

You already have seven bouts by KO and just one by submission and you are a BJJ athlete. Did you use to train exchanging game before?

No, I started to train here in Macaco’s academy. I always liked the exchange game and I started to like it better after I started to train. I love BJJ, but I do like to exchange punches. Even because we need to be a complete fighter.

How was the trainings at Chute Boxe team for this final?

I always go to Curitiba . I did spend 15 days there training at Chute Boxe before the Fury. They have many fighters there, this is good.

How is training with Shogun and Wanderlei, two champions of the category until 93kg of Pride?

It is really good to my proud. It helps me because I go to the ring really confident. When I look at my adversary I think: what this man has better than Shogun and Wanderlei, the best ones of the world in the weight? It makes the difference. Receives the belt from Wanderlei’s hand was a great moment to me.

Which are your objectives now?

My objective is the same one of every fighter. Fighting in other country, fighting at the Pride. I already fought in the best events and I think now is the time to think about fighting in another place.

FEDOR SPEAKS

Fedor Emelianenko was recently interviewed by a Russian website. Here's what Fedor had to say (translation by Igor S.):

Interviewer: You recently returned from training in the Elbrus region, which was your second time training there. Describe your trainings, results, achievements.

Fedor: The training sessions were at the height of 2,200 meters (7,218 feet). The main part of the work, such as exercises for endurance and an ability to withstand a certain load, is complete. Two weeks of training in the same mode, such as putting the necessary load additionally, is remaining. After that, I will begin preparing for the competition. I lost a little weight due to the training sessions. I am currently 103 kg (228 pounds), but visually it doesn't seem like it.

Interviewer: Maybe you are considering moving down a weight class?

Fedor: Oh no (laughs), I have no such intentions for now.

Interviewer: In November your brother participated on a PRIDE show in the Netherlands? Tell us about his performance.

Fedor: The performance was unsuccessful for my brother; Aleksander lost to Fabricio Werdum. According to the trainer, he managed the fight incompetently. He did everything that should not be done, and did not listen to what he was warned about... Sanya (Russian nickname for Aleksander) was probably over confident. It seems that he "fell ill" with star disease; considers himself a great fighter, stopped training properly (we already have not been working together for more than half a year), and now suffered a serious defeat for a second time in a year...

Interviewer: Do you see a solution to the situation? Is there a possibility to help your brother to continue having a successful career? Not so long ago he was defeating his opponents in mere minutes, and sometimes seconds. Experts were saying that winning is a family feature of the Emelianenko brothers.

Fedor: Frankly speaking, I have no desire to interfere in the affairs of my brother. He is a grown man, and chooses for himself which way to go.

Interviewer: You may be right. It happens frequently that people requesting help or good advice, put the blame of their failures on those who answered their requests and really tried to help.

Fedor: Yes, we also had a situation after his fight with Josh Barnett. Aleksander partly blamed me for his defeat, even though he did not follow any of the advice that I gave him... It was a good lesson, and now I have no intentions of interfering in his matters.

Interviewer: And what are the chances to see your younger brother, Ivan, in the rings of prestigious fighting promotions?

Fedor: Ivan will soon participate in a combat sambo tournament. He frequently travels to trainings with us, as he did to this one in the Elbrus region, but thus far I do not see any sense in promoting him into getting fights in PRIDE. He is not ready for competitions of that level yet. With Ivan, sometimes he is training very seriously, with the desire, and other times, unfortunately, he just does it inconsistently. Maybe he thinks that results can also be achieved by only training from time-to-time.... He has the same problem that Aleksander does. If Sanya (Aleksander) approached the training with a large zeal, he could have already been the champion long ago, or at least been definitely breathing down my back. But since he only trains before the fight, such sad defeats happen.

Interviewer: And who does Aleksander train with now?

Fedor: Aleksander went to train in the Netherlands before his participation in the last PRIDE show. Considering that Fabricio Werdum is a very competent wrestler, very serious, Aleksander needed a good sparring partner for the training sessions. But in the Netherlands there was simply not anyone to wrestle. Though trainers repeatedly suggested to him that he come with us, Aleksander refused. He decided that it would be better for him in the Netherlands, and the results are obvious.

Interviewer: Now every week, on Saturdays, TV viewers can become acquainted with the shows and fighters of PRIDE, watching broadcasts on NTV. What other ways do you think the mixed martial arts become more popular in Russia, and is there a future for this sport in our country?

Fedor: Of course. Of course fights have a future in our country. Viewers show a great interest in fights. Concerning becoming popular, without a doubt it must more actively go through the mass media. The more they promote it, the more they tell about mixed martial arts fights, the more people can learn about these competitions. PRIDE is already popular enough as seen from the rating of the program. Previously at this time on NTV they showed stories about boxing and the fights of outstanding masters in this form of sport, but they enjoyed much less success with the viewers.

Interviewer: In continuation of the previous question, PRIDE shows have already been staged twice in the Netherlands. Another PRIDE show just took place in October in America. Do the organizers plan to spread the PRIDE shows around the world?

Fedor: I know that there were negotiations with China and Korea, but thus far everything remains at the level of agreement and nothing more. How soon PRIDE shows take place in these countries I do not know... I do know that there are intentions to carry out shows in Russia too, but this direction is only in the stage of discussion right now. However, Russians and fans of mixed martial arts will have a chance in March to see the "Team Russia vs. Team America" show, which will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia. Roman Zentsov, my brother Aleksander, and some up-and-coming young fighters will participate for Team Russia along with myself.

Interviewer: It seems that women are doing many different sports now. Are there shows, similar to PRIDE, with the participation of women?

Fedor: There are shows in Japan and America that regularly include the participation of women. Two or three female fights go in addition to the male fights. There are also ratings, with top women competitors in their own weight categories. And in Russia, there are also girls who are more then happy to test their skills in the ring.

Interviewer: Many parents are interested to know at what age, from both a physiological and moral point-of-view, is it best to start teaching martial arts to children? Are there any recommendations from initial founders of a particular school, for example, of eastern martial arts?

Fedor: To be honest, there are no special recommendations. And really there are many arguments regarding what age children should start training martial arts. I started to train in age of 11 and my first trainer, Vasiliy Ivanovich Gavrilov, let me know from the very beginning that results are not to be achieved without hard work. I started to train seriously ever since the first years; at the end of the training sessions my gi was always wet from sweat. But now many children are brought to sport academies by their parents at the age of eight, seven, and even six. But I don't know how seriously a child at this age can train. Generally speaking, in the first years they give general education, overall strengthening exercises, and mobility games are also performed in the training sessions. It is difficult for me to say which method is better to adhere to. In any case, the optimal choice to start training martial arts is the age of 10. Children already approach training sessions more consciously. They want to learn techniques, throws, etc.

Interviewer: You are invited as the honorable guest of the "USA vs. Russia" show, which will take place in Canada. Have you ever tried to keep statistics on how many flights you have to do in a year? And what form of transportation do you prefer?

Fedor: The show is already taking place today on December 4th. Unfortunately, I could not attend because I have a serious preparation for the upcoming December 31st show. Regarding the number of flights, I have never thought of that. My favourite means of transportation, if it is not for long distances, is without a doubt a car. I love driving a car a lot. If we are traveling with a fun group, moving by train is great... Though literally 8-9 months ago trains made me very nervous. Maybe because before and after the operation I had to go back and forth between St. Petersburg and Old Oskol by myself?!... But generally I am comfortable with any means of transportation.

Interviewer: Do you have any trips planned in the near future?

Fedor: No, I don't plan to go anywhere because I have to prepare for the December 31st show.

Interviewer: Has your opponent already been announced?

Fedor: At the current moment it is Mark Hunt. He is a former K-1 champion, who also defeated Mirko Cro Cop after I did. So the fight will be interesting.

BARONI VS. SULOEV

Sources in the Bodog organization are saying that the matchup of Phil Baroni vs. Amar Suloev may possibly take place on their March 3rd card, or on a later Bodog Fight card in 2007.

FEDOR VS. MONSON

FEDOR SIGNS WITH BODOG

Sources inside the Bodog organization are saying that the promotion has signed Fedor Emelianenko to fight on its March 3rd card in St. Petersburg, Russia.

While a clause in Fedor's DSE/PRIDE contract does allow him to fight for another promotion so long as it's in his home country of Russia, these same sources say that Bodog intends to try and sign Fedor to a long term deal.

Fedor currently has one fight left on his DSE/PRIDE contract, and that bout will be against Mark Hunt on December 31st.
Sources in the Bodog organization are saying that the matchup of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Jeff Monson will most likely take place on their March 3rd card.

THREE CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT STRIKEFORCE

Strikeforce: Cung Le Victorious In Anti-Climactic Fashion & Three New Champions Crowned

An announced attendance of 8,701 braved the cold and rain in usually sunny San Jose, California to see local star Cung Le come out victorious over TUF 2 alumni Jason Von Flue. Although probably not the way he wanted to win, Le came out aggressive throwing an array of kicks as Von Flue looked to get this fight to the ground. Le landed a nice head kick that bounced off the forehead of Von Flue. Von got the fight on the ground but they were quickly separated as Von Flue had suffered a deep cut that forced the fight to be stopped by the doctor, only forty three seconds in the opening round. The cut was caused by the aforementioned kick, thus ending a promising fight in anti climatic fashion. Le is now scheduled to participate in the next Pride USA show in late February.

Frank Shamrock made his way into the cage right before the main event to announce that he will fight Phil Baroni at the next Strikeforce in April. Shamrock touted that the piece of paper in his hand was a copy of the signed contract as it is now official that both fighters will meet in April.

Josh “The Punk” Thomson fought a three round war with up and comer Nam Phan, in what ended up being one of the best fights of the night. Both fighters came out aggressive with Phan looking to take the fight to the ground. After getting the fight on the ground, Thomson was able to escape and landed a huge push kick to Phan’s face as he came in with strikes before getting a takedown. They ended the round with a beautiful display of grappling as both fighters traded reversals on the ground before rounds end. Thomson dropped Phan early in the second round and worked on the ground before the crafty Phan got back to his feet. Both fighters continued the fight at a frantic pace as Phan landed a couple of solid shots on the feet at rounds end. The third and final round was all Thomson as he showed his dominance on the feet. Thomson used body kicks throughout the round to soften up Phan and dropped Phan late in the round with a body kick. Thomson mounted Phan and proceeded to pound on Phan. Phan worked back to his open guard but Thomson poured it on at the end, landing some huge bombs up until the end of the fight. Thomson won a unanimous decision to become the Strikeforce U.S. Lightweight Champion.

In the first ever women’s bout in Strikeforce history, Gina Carrano and Elina Maxwell put on an entertaining show that had the fans on their feet. Carrano was able to land the cleaner shots of the two fighters throughout the whole fight, while Maxwell took Carrano down throughout the fight nothing would ever amount from, as Carrano would quickly reverse Maxwelll. In the last round, Maxwell fell to her back and secured a triangle choke then got on top of Carrano trying to finish the choke. Carrano escaped and mounted Maxwell, landing blows for the last minute of the fight. At the end, Carrano walked away with a well-earned unanimous decision.

Bobby Southworth became the first ever Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion after winning a lackluster affair against Vernon “Tiger” White. The same pattern would play out through the entire five round fight. On the feet neither fighter would show superiority over the other and Southworth would control the fight on the ground with takedowns and good positioning. The crowd was very restless throughout the entire fight but it was clear at the end of the day that Southworth had done more then enough to earn the win.

In an ultra exciting fight, Duane “Bang” Ludwig returned to his winning ways dispatching of Tony “The Freak” Fryklund by TKO in the second round. This fight stayed on the feet for most of the time, as Fryklund had no problem trading with Ludwig. In the end that was his undoing as Ludwig was easily the superior striker. Ludwig on several instances dropped Fryklund but credit must be given to Fryklund as he took an enormous amount of punishment through the fight. In the second round, Ludwig landed a head kick and Fryklund responded by clapping his hands as Ludwig came in swinging. After dropping Fryklund, Ludwig landed some vicious shots but Fryklund somehow got back to his feet but was shortly dropped for the last time as the referee stepped in and called a halt to the fight at 3:37 into the second round.

Eugene Jackson won a quick and exciting fight to become the Strikeforce U.S. Middleweight Champion, submitting a tough Ronald Jhun with a rear naked choke. Jackson dropped Jhun with a flurry then mounted Jhun. In an effort to escape, Jhun gave up his back but Jackson took full advantage securing the choke shortly after at 2:01 into the first round Jackson now improves to 3-0 in Strikeforce.

Paul Buentello took on late replacement Ruben “Warpath” Villreal in a heavyweight bout. Buentello threw everything but the kitchen sink in the first round as he landed shot after shot buy Villareal seemed to be unfazed throughout the entire opening round. After a brief feeling out period to start the second round, Buentello landed another huge punch but Villareal continued on. Villareal’s biggest came near the end of the fight as Buentello threw a kick and slipped but Villareal didn’t take advantage. Shortly after Buentello landed a couple of huge punches that hurt Villareal and then as they were along the fence, Buentello mixed in knees and punches as he was brutalizing Villareal with strikes. Her Dean finally stepped in to stop the fight just as the towel came in flying, giving Buentello the TKO victory 3:56 into the second round.

After a shaky first round, Daniel Puder came back strong in the second round to submit Mike Cook with a rear naked choke. Puder from the start of the fight wanted it on the ground but Cook showed excellent takedown defense throughout the round. Cook was impressive in the first round and Puder seemed in trouble. Puder got the takedown to start the second round and then shortly after got Cook’s back. Puder was finally able to secure the choke, 2:31 into the second round.

Rex Richards opened the main card by easily submitting Kyle Levition with a nasty looking keylock. Richards got the fight quickly to the ground and showed his ground superiority until locking in the submission at 2:02 into the first round

In Preliminary action, David Smith defeated Sean Basset by TKO, 1:36 into the third round in what was an entertaining fight.

Scott Graham won a unanimous decision over Drew Dimanlig.

Anthony Figueroa won a unanimous decision over David Barrios.

Raul Castillo opened the night’s action with a TKO victory over Andrew Montanez, 2:10 into the first round.

Wanderlei Silva
By Marcelo Alonso

End of the year

The end of the year has been coming and with that the traditional Pride of New Years Eve, event that Wanderlei Silva fights for three years. The Chute Boxe star, who is already confirmed to fight in the end of the year but is still waiting his adversary, gave us an exclusive interview talking about the victory of Thiago Silva at the GP of Fury FC 2, about the polemic with Paulão Filho and what he expects to 2007. “I fell that next year will be the year that I will most compete. When the stage of this GP finishes I want to fight in and also in ”, said Wand. Check out the complete interview:

What did most impress you at Fury FC?

I am sure that was Thiago Silva. Both bouts were really good and the bout he did at the Show Fight, against a really tough adversary, he won really well. He never lost and after winning this match he is one of the most quoted to fight in other countries.

Do you think that he is one of the best ones of and deserves the belt?

Yeah, he deserved that. That was an amazing victory. At this match he was the best one and he has future.

He has the surname Silva. Is he already from the family?

Sure. Silva family, he is like a brother and is also a Silva (laughs).

What about Daniel Acácio’s bout, did you think the decision was fair?

I didn’t think so. I fought Pé-de-Chumbo did his own game, but that was a judge’s mistake, he had to take the fight up again. It is unacceptable that under an event like this one, of high level, accepts four minutes inside the guard. I think he was prejudiced by the judge.

Do you already know who will you face in the end of the year?

I am expecting to see who will face me. I am training anyway and no matter who comes, I hope to change the result of my last bout in the end of the year and gives some happy moments to my fans, they want to see me back with victories. They expected that and this is what I want to do.

What do you think of a new bout between Shogun and Arona?

I think this is an interesting bout, even after Shogun defeats Arona. I think that this confrontation with Shogun or with me will just happen next year, when everyone will face everyone. Next year is everything again thanks God. Starting on February doing a belt dispute. I am feeling that next year will be the year that I will most compete. When the stage of this GP finishes I want to fight in and also in

What about your polemic with Paulão? Do you think the Pride organization will do this bout or not?

I don’t think so. The Pride won’t do this bout against Paulão. I can’t face anyone, but I also don’t scare anyone. No matter who comes. I think it is interesting, I just face heavier guys, but if they gave me lighter fighters it is fine. I already faced biggest fighters, but I also face smaller ones, I am professional.

Which are your plans to Christmas and New Years Eve?

New Years Eve is all about Pride, at least my last three years was like that. And Christmas is at home with my family. I don’t use to celebrate because I am always training, so the Christmas celebration is special, with great food and a good party. I like to relax, control my weight and that is it. But this is a date that we must do a special dinner.

Minotouro 100% focus at Pride

The DSE, company that produces the Pride, didn’t confirm his participation in the event of the end of the year, but Rogério Minotouro is 100% focus to fight at the New Years Eve Pride. “I had the Brazilian Championship of Boxing and I didn’t fight because I am focus for the Pride of the end of the year”, guaranteed the BTT black belt. Rogério waits the confirmation of the Japanese organization, but doesn’t know who could be his opponent. “I will fight against who the Pride organization decides. I must wait, but I want to fight in my weight. The fight against Wanderlei would be better, I am already training to face him, but if it doesn’t happens, I hope that he puts his belt in game at Pride Las Vegas so I can dispute it”, said Minotouro.

Arona: “I just wanna face Wanderlei”

Searched by the team TATAME to know how is his trainings for his possible participation at New Years Eve Pride, Ricardo Arona was really decided. “I just want to fight on December 31st against Wanderlei or for the belt. If it doesn’t happen, I probably won’t fight in the end of the year. I prefer to fight in next year GP when I will face all of the athletes from my category”, said Arona.
