The Official Saku and Yuki Page

"Saku" Onzuka

Vital Statistics:
 Born: August 7, 2002
 Acquired: October 13, 2002
 Gender: Male
Breed: Japanese Spitz (Maxes out at 20-25 lbs)
 Weight:  Presently 6 lbs (10/21/02)
Proud Parents:  Mike and Lisa Onzuka
Short term goals:  Doing his "business" on his pee pee pad and sleeping in after 6:00 am.

We wanted to name him something Japanese since he is supposed to be a Japanese Spitz and two syllables because dogs are supposed to be more receptive to a two syllable name. I suggested Di Nooch because for all we know we could have been tricked and bought a Italian Spitz. We settled on "Saku."

Saku is named after the famous Japanese fighter Kazushi Sakuraba who is the only man in history to beat four Gracies. Saku also means flower, but there is no way that I would name my dog flower.

Here's some photos to take a look at. More coming soon when he sits still. It took me about 3 hours to take these. As you can see, I had to have Lisa hold him down for one of the pics.

This is the original Kazushi Sakuraba whom "Saku" is named after.

The newest member of the Onzuka household...

"Yuki" Onzuka

Vital Statistics:
 Born: July 14, 2003
 Acquired: September 1, 2003
 Gender: Female
Breed: Japanese Spitz (Maxes out at 20-25 lbs)
 Weight:  Presently 3.5 lbs (8/31/03)
Proud Parents:  Mike and Lisa Onzuka
Short term goals:  Finding her food and water and taking care of business on the paper by herself. Also, stop chasing big brother.

Lisa, maybe in her pre-birth fit of hormones, wanted to get another dog to keep Saku company because he is basically eating all drywall and cabinets in sight. Her Aunt called us and asked if we knew anyone who wanted a Japanese Spitz. That clinched it so we called the family, who already had 7 Spitz's, and also the 7 weeks old puppy was a girl. It was perfect timing to take the dog home so we went to check out the dog and she was pretty mellow. Saku rarely barks and we wanted to get the new puppy home before she started any bad habits. We agreed to the price and took Yuki home to meet her big brother. They hit it off and the rest is history. After only one day, Yuki chases around Saku and rules the house.

I named Yuki after Yuki Nakai, the former welterweight Shooto Champ and friend, who I had the honor of fighting in the Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championships in 1998 (I think) as a purple belt. I lost a 2-2 decision and now he is a killer black belt and I am still a scrub brown. It was cool to fight him so I hope he does not get insulted that we named our girl dog after him. Lisa liked the name Yuki because it means snow which she is white as snow (insert pun here) and we got to keep with the Japanese name tradition.

Here are some pictures that we shot in Yuki's first day home on August 31, 2003.
