Keith "The Giant Killer" Hackney
by Chris Onzuka

FCF: I'm here with Keith Hackney, who's been kind of quiet on the NHB circuit, but has been building up some fighters and has been getting pretty loud on the other end of the spectrum as far as the coaching aspect. So, what did you think of the event?
Keith Hackney: Well, I will tell you what, that was put together real well. And there was some real good fighters here tonight. We saw some knock outs, some good stand-up, down to ground [matches]. I had some of my guys here fighting, even though I just opened up a school just two months ago. Some of the guys have been training at other places. By the end of the year, we're going to have some well-rounded fighters as far as stand-up, take downs and ground. I'm looking forward to the future of the school and to a lot of the NHB shows in Chicago, or the closest thing here that we can have to them anyway, since they outlawed them.

FCF: Can we expect to see you in any events?
KH: Yes, in fact I have a thing going on right now with Michael Castellano. We're looking at getting a place and he is negociating with a couple of different fighters. I can't say anyone's name until they're on a contract, but we're looking at an exciting fight coming up in May

FCF: Do you want to tell us a little about your school?
KH: The school's in Roselle. It's located at 800 West Lake Street, Suite 108. We train no-holds barred. We do all [kinds of] stand-up, all different ranges, takedowns, counter to takedowns, submissions, leg locks, basically all around fighting, everything it takes to be a winner in this sport.

FCF: And in your school there is a Carlson Gracie Jr. representative teaching there?
KH: Yes, Chris Gochis and Mike Castellano are teaching the Jiu-Jitsu class. I'm teaching the vale tudo class. They're teaching the gi class, I'm teaching the class without the gi, as far as submissions on the ground, with different ways to strike on the ground. We do a lot of takedowns and counters to the takedowns, and a lot of different standup, leg kicks, knees, elbows, headbutts.

FCF: Are you actually partnered up with Carlson Gracie Jr.?
KH: No, Carlson Gracie Jr. is not a part of the school. His school closed down in Bloomingdale and a lot of the guys who trained there wanted to become more well rounded fighters because all they were doing was basically all gi fighting. Some of the guys went off on their own and started doing NHB stuff without the gi and we ended up hooking up and their happy with the kind of training we're doing here now.

FCF: Other than that fight, do you have anything coming up?
KH: Right now, I'm putting all my energy into the school and put together a stable of fighters. I have been working on the Pankration thing with Ken Shamrock, and all the other national coaches, trying to get this thing to where they can get this thing entered into the Olympics. I'm looking at that as a long-term goal, you're looking at 2004. And we got a great start on that. We've got a lot of different events that we've put on to this point that are pushing the sport. A lot of good things are happening right now and I'm excited.

FCF: Now your getting me excited. Thanks again.
KH: Thank you a lot, I appreciate it, nice seeing you.
