Shane Agena grew up in Makiki and had his first taste in the combative arts by joining the McKinley High School wrestling team. That was short lived to say the least, as he was not prepared at that time to work out that hard and the weight cutting made it even worse. Shane attended Kapiolani and Honolulu Community Colleges for a few years and also started working in the telecommunications field, which turned into a career.
This is also about the time that Shane started taking in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with Todd Tanaka in a group class, around 1996. He started off training once a week and soon realized that it was not nearly enough training to be competitive with some of the other students in class, so he started taking private lessons under Scott Devine. Under Scott Devine’s tutelage, he learned much of his basics. In 1997-1998, Scott and his family moved to the mainland, so Shane began training with Baret Yoshida. Shane jumped into every competition he could to test his progress and more importantly himself.
His efforts were rewarded with a purple belt in 1999 and he started to expand his skill set by starting to teach classes. To improve his teaching abilities and to continue his learning, Shane started training with Chris and Mike Onzuka. During this time, he took every opportunity to teach at different Relson Gracie academies to improve on his teaching and train with the different academies’ students.
In 2002, Shane received his brown belt and after honing his teaching skills, he became the primary instructor for Team HK for a couple of years when Todd Tanaka took some time off to start a restaurant. In 2006, the Onzukas took the plunge and leased out a space to expand their academy, now known as the O2 Martial Arts Academy (O2MAA) and called Shane to personally ask him to be part of the academy.
Shane has been one of the Head Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructors at O2MAA and is in charge of the O2MAA Gracie Jiu-Jitsu competition team. Shane received his black belt from Relson Gracie, along with Chris Onzuka, on February 26, 2009. Shane is the Hawaii Relson Gracie Team’s top lightweight athlete and is still an active competitor. He will compete as long as his body allows, continuing what he started back in 1996.
