David Chew is originally from Hilo, Hawaii and comes from a
large family. He is one of nine kids. David moved to Oahu and
lived in dorms at Kamehameha Schools since the 7th grade. This is when
David tried out for and found out that he excelled in wrestling.
Through hard work and dedication he won
numerous high school tournaments. He placed 5th place and then worked
his way up to 2nd place in the state championships later in his high school
career. Along the way, he won the
Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) division wrestling championship.
David helped Kamehameha win their first team
state wrestling title his senior year in
1997.
After graduating high school, David attended and went on to wrestle for Pacific Lutheran University
(PLU) in Tacoma, Washington for five years. While there, he continued
winning
tournaments and was a national qualifier. David graduated from PLU with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in
Sociology and Philosophy. Shortly after moving back to Hawaii, he was
introduced to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in 2004 and started training directly under
the tutelage of Relson Gracie. Also during this time, David also
started a family and currently has three beautiful children. In the next
three years, David dominated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling
tournaments.
In 2007, David was hand picked by Relson Gracie to represent his team of MMA
fighters to compete in the Gracie
Proving Grounds event. Always one to challenge himself, David accepted
and beat Kevin Grace in the first round by rear naked choke. This
performance and his continued dominance in tournaments earned David a purple
belt by Relson. David taught wrestling at Relson Gracie's main academy
and then moved closer to home and is currently O2 Martial Arts Academy Head
Wrestling Instructor. He also currently works as a Residential Services
Coordinator for Mental Health Kokua.
